So i am planing to hop on board the prepaid plan group. I have done a little of my own research about various plans however they all dont seem to fit what i want. Most of the prepaid gsm plans now days require a set amount of data, which i dont need at all since im at university and have wifi access all the time. Looking for a prepaid plan with a sim so i can put into my new phone.
I am going to buy the Oppo find 5 which some of you may be aware of, but its a GSM and WCDMA pentaband phone. So from what i have read i will need a AT&T/T-Mobile based plan as those are the only providers that would work with this phone.
As for the plan i want, ideally, Unlimited texting, 150-300 minuets, and No data. As i am mostly a texting person, unlimited texting is an essential aspect to the plan i would need. Pretty much i am going for the cheapest option, preferably somewhere in the $20 per month range.
Heres what i have found for cheap GMS plans, just not cheap enough. I am not familiar with a lot of these, so if you have any experience with the provider let me know.
H2O Wireless = $30 unlim text/talk
Spot Mobile = $25 T-Mobile unlim talk/text
T-Mobile's $30 5GB 4g/unlimited SMS/MMS/100 minute plan would be good. I had it and it was decent. If you need more minutes you could always use Google Voice and Talkatone (VoIP) or similar or it's 10 cents a minute beyond the 100 minutes. It lasts 30 days and I had no problems.

The oppo find 5 doesnt have 4G support, would that plan still work? I know TMobile is GSM Based. Is GSM Based and Data at 4G different things? Also would i still get data with this plan, just at lower speeds?

I currently have that plan.... and it is good enough. However, do not expect to use Google Voice after you run out of minutes because you will just not be able. T-mobile also includes the minutes you talk on GVoice for you monthly minutes limit...
Also, if you receive a call, those minutes also count! It sucks, I know! But it is a good plan thou

Yes, do not worry, you can still use T-mobile network.
T-mobile uses another set of frequencies, but they are working on having the same connectivity as the rest of the companies. Depending on where you live you can get 3G without problems or get stack on 2G network. I am using 2G network and it is all I need!

4G is a marketing ploy. It's really DC-HSPA which is 42 Mbps HSPA but if you have a 3G GSM phone you can use it. If you have 1900 MHz 3G only you'll be limited to the places listed on www.airportal.de. If you have 1700 and 2100 you can get "4G" wherever they have it deployed on their coverage maps.

Generally they begin capping around 2gigs. Not bad though for $45. Only reason this appeals to me is I can't get T-Mobile 3/4g service but I can get AT&T hspda service. As far as I know, this is the cheapest unlimited plan that runs on AT&T's network.

It does, unlimited minutes and messages, 4G with speeds throttled after the first 2G - but it's only available as a family plan: 2 phones, 2 plans, 2 x $50 / mo.
Great if you've got a family member who's interested, and you both live in the t-m ob footprint.
The same plan's available BYOD for $60/mo, which is a lot more when you consider that the family plan includes phones.

I used Simple Mobile's $40 per month plan and data speeds were horrible. It was so bad I switched to their $60 unlimited. Then this past weekend T-mo had that free phone giveaway thing for new customers, so I ended up signing up for the $60 plan for 2GB of data. Same price as Simple and I only really use about 2GB per month anyway, so it works well for me plus a free Galaxy S 2 is always cool with me.
The one thing about t-mo I really like is that if you call them there are a lot more options than what you see on the web. For example, I use Google Voice so I don't need SMS. That cuts $10 out of the bill right there, but you have to call to get them to take that out, can't do it via the web I don't think.
When is the Straight Talk SIM plan coming out?! Will they do 4G? God, I hope so, $45 bucks for all the **** they offer is a STEAL, especially if you use it with a smartphone... Unlike I am doing with GoPhone ATM

Knowing AT&T, if you use Straight Talk, the data speeds are probably capped at 512kbps.
Didn't work for me. I cannot even use SMS with their unlimited $45 plan. Data is down as well. I'm on Straighttalk AT&T SIM card. Customer support reset the options on their side twice, but it didn't help. I tried two different phones with this SIM card to no avail.
texts should be working but for data, did you put in the new APNs? Data wont just work if you just insert the SIM card in since AT&T and ST have different APN's
Im going to leave sprint and go to AT&T. Now Im new to AT&Ts phones, and I was wondering a few things.
1. How are the speeds in general? With sprint I'll usually pull only .500-.700 mb under 3g but 4g is 5+mb in a good area. Usually I cant get 4g though.
2. Im unsure on their phones, so which phone is the top contender now? Anything new coming out soon that I should wait for?
Thanks guys.
AT&T is pretty expensive, Im using it just because I get a discount. But if that doesnt bother you, I believe you will like the service compared to Sprint (depends on area)
•HSPA+ speeds range from 3 to 7mbps depending on area compared to the .2 to .8 I used to get on Sprint. Not to mention its LTE if u are covered where it ranged from 8 to 20mbps average where I live
•AT&T is notorious for getting most of the top phones, its gonna release the HTC One X, Skyrocket HD, Nokia Lumia 900 and HTC Titan 2 soon, but right now the top phone is the Galaxy Note LTE ImO.
Another good advantage is that its bands are compatible with the interational unlokced phones you can import so you get fast 3G / 4G speeds on its network unlike TMobile.
all in all, if price isnt an issue, you will like the choices and services from my experience
Best phones on AT&T are the note and if you don't want/care for LTE then the galaxy s 2. (not sky rocket)
I can get any were form 2Mb DL to 7MB DL on 3g and 8-12DL on H+ "4g".
You should try and buy a 2G iphone and get unlimited data first and then buy what ever phone you want.
P.S Why not verizon?
Hmm. Thanks guys.. 4ktvs any info on the 2g loophole?
Im paying 141 a mth on sprint for two lines with a discount of 24%. The speeds SUCK! WE have unlimited data etc, 1800 landline minutes and free mobile to mobile etc.
We ( being my fiance and I ) use 200 mins a mth, if that. I use around 2gb average a mth. the most Ive done was 2.9gb a mth. So AT&T is around the same price but way faster, given less data. I also have 700 mins shared, unlimited text/mobile to mobile.
I dont think verizon can do anything more for me, as their plans seem to be a bit more.
edit: Why the SGII Over the skyrocket version?
The Lumia 900 will reach att soon. Honestly, I can't see anything else you can't get elsewhere. My speeds are excellent though, on 3g I get 1.3 dl. It's dependant on your region though.

what do you mean by" I cant see anything else you cant get where?" Sprints speeds suck. So I need to go with someone else. Verizon seemed more expensive, AT&T is almost the same price, but less mins, less data but faster speeds.
Tmo, Im guessing is out of the picture and Verizon is known for charging a lot more than others.
Well, pretty much every other big ticket phone has a clone on the other networks. That can't be said about the lumia 900.

1) I am not 100% it works any more, but if you buy a iphone 2g and reset it to stock and put a sim in it to sign up for a plan with itunes, then unlimited data should be up there, if not try calling AT&T and tell them you got an iphone 2g and it needs the unlimited data plan to work right and update.
2)The non skyrocket has a better CPU. I have tryed both and I think you would likely like that one better and it cost less. The 900 won't come out for about 30 or so days, but if you can wait you may want to get one.
3) If you want a phone with 4gLTE then the note is better than the skyrocket.( the 1280x800 oled 5.3 vs 4.5 800x480. That is a lot lower rez)
If you are/can wait, then the 900 for 100 is not bad or what will likely be one of the best phones of the year the HTC ONE X would be a good pick and if you are/can wait, go for that one.( Is called the one x and I just called it the one. lol)
lolthanks man. I think I seen someone said they did it recently and it still worked.. I 'll look into the iphone 2g loop.

OP, my take here.
If you want speed, I guess ATT and Verizon are good choices.
Both are expensive.
Both are trying to rip us off.
Both have top-notch phones.
Verizon is well-known for coverage, better if not much better than ATT coverage.
Verizon has better LTE coverage. LTE means faster and also mean draining phone's battery faster. Take your choice.
Verizon utilizes the CDMA technology while ATT using GSM.
GSM => you can unlock and use with other GSM providers, especially handy when travel abroad.
GSM => you can talk AND surf at the same time, CMDA can't.

I agree..I have had Att and Verizon...for me Att had been better...the gsm feature itself is nice if you break your phone..pop the Sim on another phone and keep going...there customer service sucks but if you ask for the resolutions department...they will give you about anything to make you happy...hence my wifes skyrocket 6 months before upgrade was available

I heard AT&T are working on shared data plans for family plans. Instead of $30 every month for each phone that has a data plan, there will be a shared option in the near future. This will be pretty interesting.
It is really up to which carrier has the best coverage where you mainly reside. AT&T is pretty good since you have unlimited mobile to any mobile now. I barely tap into my 450 minutes and i have rollover minutes for days. I honestly say my choice came down to which one would be more economical but a better bang for my buck. AT&T ended up being that. 1. I don't pay for phone insurance because if our phones get stolen it would cost all of $25 dollars to get a cheap phone and a free replacement sim. To me being based on GSM is worth more. As far as internet speeds and all that I say it doesn't matter when it comes to our cell phones. The combination of chipsets and software.
I have to get off of Straight Talk and their awful speeds. Calling and texting is fine but the data is throttled horribly down to less than 1 mbps. Any suggestions? I can't go with T-Mobile because I know their speeds are awful where I live (Princeton central NJ area).
What about prepaid AT&T?
You're going to find the best deals on an MVNO, which is just a company like StraightTalk that uses one (or more) of the Big Four's networks to provide their service. You can find a great list of them on Wikipedia (sort them by "Wireless technology" and look at the GSM ones):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_US_MVNO
I'm currently with H2O Wireless on their Minute Plan (I don't use a lot of minutes/texts and I'm mostly on WiFi), but I switched my parents over to their $30 unlimited plan (unlimited talk + text, no data or MMS). They offer other plans with data as well (they use AT&T). If you're looking for pay-per-minute/text/MB, the newly-rebranded Ptel (PlatinumTel) has the best rates, but they use T-Mobile.
Once you've picked the company you would like to use, purchase a SIM on eBay and cut it to a micro SIM (very easy to do; use the template here), then activate it on their website.
Good luck, and I hope this helps!
Out of curiosity, is there a MVNO that uses multiple gsm networks at the same time to provide coverage (say at&t and tmobile)? I have the tmobile $30 prepaid plan but in some areas at&t provides coverage where tmobile doesn't. So it would be great if a MVNO provided coverage at the same time on both networks.
$65/mo for 1 GB is too little. I'll need at least 2 GB.

I'd recommend the tmobile $30 prepaid 4g plan. It gives you 100 voice minutes, unlimited text, and 5gb of 4g speed data (then you get throttled). The 100 min of voice is a bit disappointing in my opinion but I make it work by routing most of my calls over data.
Looks like you didn't even read my post.

I personally use Simple Mobile with my Nexus. Its Unlimited Everything (text, talk, data) for $40(+tax)/mo.
If you want 4g the price bumps up by $10 I think, but it's worth it right? Also the first 250MB on the default ($40/mo) plan runs at 4g speeds, then they throttle you back down to 3g speeds.
I been a customer for a few months now, I love the data speeds when I'm not around any wifi connection.
P.S. Simple Mobile is based off of T-Mobile.

If you live outside the coverage area they will dissuade you from joining at that time, If my primary residence is in the coverage area,
I wouldn't worry to much. But you can always talk that over with someone, before you signup. I made sure I understood their terms of service.
I signed up because everything was clearly defined, and for the roaming, which not to many prepaids allow.
So if I'm understanding correctly, H2O uses services from both tmo and att, but they don't like me using the att covered areas.

And I switched from TMO to net10 for att coverage at better prices. TMO coverage absolutely sux near me and even in NYC inside hotels when I travel for work. Much better with ATT.
1.5gb at $45/30 days (even cheaper like $42 on ebay with no tax) is still cheaper than almost all other MVNO's for ATT that i could find.
EDIT: Yeah just checked all ATT providers at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_mobile_virtual_network_operators and the cheapest I could find was $50 for 1gb.
And as tracfone owns net10/st I bet ST will be having this limit at some point. PLus I welcome the limit, as no "hidden" limit anymore and from net10data.com they actually say streaming video's/music. So now I won't be breaking the TOS.

Yeah but how much is just a voice/sms plan with decent minutes?
I don't know sounds like too much trouble then it's worth. With wifi at home/work/friends/family, don't think i've ever reached 1gig in a month.
I know and it probably would be a giant hastle. But the hotspot would be my main source of data. I live in the country and can only get hughesnet satellite at home and im fed up with its restrictions and slow speeds. So i plan on getting a hotspot for home as my main source of internet anyways.
I do appreciate any suggestions or ideas. I just want a reasonable amount of data. I could have learned to live with 2gb but 1.5 is cutting it too close. Iv done about that much already this cycle and im being ultra conservative on usage.

Dang how do you do internet? I'm lucky I live like between Albany and the country. I mean 5min from my house is the biggest buffalo farm in NY. Ton of corn/milk/etc farms near me, but only 10-12 min from Albany (NY that is). So still get cable internet (expensive, hate it, but yeah).
At least it's unlimited. I think I dl'd something like 300gb/month at home. Not sure I could go just cell.
I mean if that's you're ownly source of internet you may not have a choice. GL man, heard ATT even put a cap on the grandfathered unlimited plans so even if you could buy one of those from someone you'd prolly be screwed.
Yea its rediculous. 500mb a day for home internet is borderline retarded. If i dont set my PC up right i can blow through that just booting up. Things like syncing dropbox on startup is a no no.
Oh that's so lame! Guess I'll be switching to T-Mobile.
So I'm currently on the T-Mobile $30 plan, which is great, but I'm left wanting for more minutes. So I use nearly all my data allowance each month, so being on a plan that doesn't have unlimited data with caps lower than 5 GB isn't acceptable. I'd also like to keep my H+ speeds. My budget is $45. My knee-jerk reaction is to go with GoSmart, since they meet all the criteria, and they aren't a subsidiary of tracfone. I'm a tad worried at their definition of High Speed Web, which is 3G. I know that H+ is technically 3g, but many companies have taken to calling it 4g.
My 2nd choice would be to go with Net10 or Straighttalk, but I've heard that data caps are unpredictable, and I'd rather not have to deal with that.
I'm not sure what else is out there...I'd like to go with AT&T due to their superior coverage, but I can accept that they may not have plans that appeal to me.
Sounds like you're out of luck. You can't get much out of prepaid services. Only T-mobile's $70 unlimited prepaid plan offers all you can eat minutes, text and data. But that's way out of your budget.

Use voip for the extra minutes. In you price range you won't be able to find what you are looking for. For what it's worth, net10 is a subsidiary of tracfone and their service reflects that, they sucked big time for me.
I don't think Straight Talk or Net10 throttle as much if you have their T-Mobile SIM. It's AT&T that's screwing over the MVNO's, not the MVNO itself. In fact, I think on Net10's Terms Of Service it even states that if you have an AT&T SIM you'll be capped at 1.5GB of data and it doesn't apply if you have the "pink" net10 T-Mobile SIM.
Not first hand experience but it seems to be the gist from everything I've read... StraightTalk on TMO is a lot more relaxed than on ATT.
GoSmart's data will be slower than you're looking for. If you read closely you'll find the "3G" speedcap (can't remember off the top of my head but there is one. 3mbps?).
Do consider VoIP. If you're looking for something straight forward that works pretty well, download the Vonage app. Since an app update recently, you're now able to dial from the native dialer and choose Vonage (or set it to always). Works over wifi and cell data. If you're fine making your longer phone calls outbound calls, you'll do alright.
I was in a similar place. I just got my Nexus 4 and am testing out the TMo 30 plan. A good alternative is Solavei. If I remember correctly, they are $45 a month. You get unlimited call/text/data. 4G data is capped at 4GB - best I've found from an MVNO that offers decent minutes. I also read they allow TMo LTE. Again, not first hand experience. Just what I found while digging. If I find VOIP imperfect (which it was on the 35 Virgin plan before), I'll probably switch to Solavei.
Bonus: Taxes are NOT included. A lot of users reported approx $50 bills total.
Bonus 2: GoSmart does not offer H+. This has been reported by several users. Kept me away from their plan.

I have tried that, but I had a lot of people complain about an echo. Is that fixed?

With Vonage? Others always complain about echo when I use sipdroid/pbxes/gv, but over Vonage, everyone stops the conversation at some point to say that I sound way better than I usually do.

I'm quite pleased with Spare Phone vs Groove IP.

Yeah, I think Solavei would be his only choice. I have Simple Mobile now, but they screwed me on the data. They throttled me a little after I passed the 2 gig mark, so I wouldn't recommend them. I'm tired of dealing with these MNVOs and all their bull, so I'm switching to the $70 unlimited plan from T-Mobile.
