Problem with custom ROMs - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I am trying to install a custom ROM, but none are working. I install it using TWRP and it boots, but it gets stuck at the splash screen for the ROM. I've tried both ParanoidAndroid and CM10.1 and its the same with both of them. It does boot when I go back to stock though. I've tried reinstalling, I've tried using both TWRP and CWM, I've even re locked and unlocked the bootloader. If you have any idea what I can do please let me know.

What steps are you taking to flash the ROM.. Are you fully wiping?

you need a factory reset for the first flash. you cant just install.

Make sure you do a full wipe before flashing the rom and if your installing paranoid make sure you use the Gapps ..

Stuck on cyanogen boot circle

So I rooted my nexus 7 and intended on flashing cm on it by rom manager. I used the root without unlocking boot loader. It doesn't get past the cyanogen boot circle and when it does occasionally, It displays 2 error messages that say "the setup wizard has stopped" and "unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped." Somebody please help I have no idea what to do. I tried wiping data by going to recovery mode but nothing changes. HELP.
Need more information... What recovery do you have? What are the step you did in recovery for install the rom? What version of gapps did you flashed?

I think I have the clockworkmod recovery. Didnt do that and didnt flash gapps
If you want to flash cm 10.1 :
recovery> factory reset, format system (optional), flash rom, flash gapps 20130301, reboot.
How would I flash the rom and gapps 20130301? Sorry I'm a bit new to this stuff.
Have you read OP of cm thread?
I don't have access to the sd card so I cant put anything
Without unlocking bootloader you want flash cyanogenmod?:<facepalm>

You don't need it... But it really helps if you want to fastboot flash something.
All you need to do is a factory reset from recovery.

So i unlocked the bootloader and i did a factory reset and it still gets stuck at the boot circle. Then it displays the two messages "unfortunately, setup wizard has stopped" and the other one. No change at all other then a lock at the bottom of the screen when the google logo comes up.
Install the Nexus 7 factory image instead of flash to a different custom ROM. Then I recommend getting MultiRom so you have your stock ROM to fall back on when experimenting for exact situations like this.
OMG got it thanks for all the help

Need help in flashing CM 10.2

I recently got a nexus 7 2012. I unlocked it and installed the custom recovery (CWM) according to the guides given in the forum and elsewhere. The problem comes when I install a custom ROM like CM10.2, It installs fine, but the boot does not resume after the CM animation. I tried another rom like AOKP and even TWRP as recovery, still the problem persists. My bootloader is 4.23 and flashing back to stock ROM works as normal. Please help.
What recovery you use. And what tool you use to root. For I use WUG toolkit. And install TWRP. And install CM 10.2 with no problem. Maybe you not really root. Update your superuser before that

Stupid question: are you sure you are flashing grouper ROMs?
Tried a lot of combinations with ROMs and recoveries finally I solved it. CWM wasn't working with its wipe options and tried TWRP and gave the full wipe of all partitions before flashing CM and gapps and it worked!!!!

Nexus 4 stuck on boot animation

Guys I know there are a ton of threads with this problem but no matter what I try, i'm still stuck on a boot loop.
So basically I had PA Rom 3.99 RC2 on my nexus and everything was fine. I then tried to flash PA AOSP kit kat build
but my phone would not boot so I went with a factory image occam 4.3 Phone booted and all was good. I was liking the
stock experience and then about 4 days later after a reboot, phone got stuck on the boot animation X. It would not get out of it
so I decided to flash PA Rom 3.99 rc2 again via ADB push zip. factory reset, installed the rom and gapps, wiped caches and thought i was good to go. Well the phone again would not get past the boot animation of PA.
i then decided to go with the Factory image occam 4.3 via fastboot and installed it and everything. Again stuck on the X. So then I tried PSX rom 4.3 again via adb push, did my factory reset and flashed the rom and gapps and superSu. Also got stuck on the boot animation. Left it for over 2 hours bootlooping and nothing.
Going crazy I went and fastboot the 4.2.2 JDQ39 img and downgraded bootloader, baseband. Installed it and again, stuck on the X animation. just hangs there.
Any help? i don't know what else to try, currently using my HD2 and it is sooo slow :cyclops:
Make sure to use latest cwm recovery. Avoid using twrp recovery. Use the toolkit and flash stock image. It will wipe everything in the phone but it will fix it.

Thanks for the suggestion but still nothing. Updated CWMR to 6.0.4.3 and tried the 4.3 stock image. Still hangs on bootup. android file transfer recognizes the device is plugged in via usb but just gives me the error "could not connect to device"
Oh man I don't know what's wrong with my nexus
bump bump
I'm having this same issue, and it happened just like you. I flashed CM 10.2 nightly 20131114 this morning and I tested it to make sure everything was working. I decided to reboot the phone, and after that I keep getting stuck at the boot animation no matter what I did. To no avail, I reflashed a working zip, restored a backup, restored another backup, flashed the 4.4 factory image (wiping the entire phone), the 4.3 factory image, and then I read that the 4.2 baseband can fix it, so I flashed the 4.2 factory image. That 4.2 image gets it to boot, but without baseband. Right now I'm trying different radios just to see if I can get service again. If it matters, I was running the hybrid 33/84 radio for T-Mobile's LTE when this happened. Very, very peculiar situation here. I've never had anything like this happen, and especially remain an issue after wiping the entire device. I'm hoping it's not a sudden hardware issue.
i jst flash factory image of 4.4 n nw my phone is stuck o the boot animation screen plz help

just re-flash 4.2, it'll work. I've been doing that since Monday. but I want kitkat too!!
my device is stuck on the boot animation too. is there a way to reinstall the default 4.3 recovery and just rerun the update or something basic like that? my device was almost at stock before running the update. the only two things: twrp and rooted via recovery. so i thought everything will work fine and now there is no backup...

Why?
Just fastboot flash all the image files (boot.img,recovery.img....) from the factory image.

Nexus 4 Stuck at starting app when not on Stock

Short Story: My phone works fine when its stock 4.4.4 , no root. If i root it and flash a custom recovery using WUG it gets stuck on starting ups.
Long Story: I was running the latest version of PA, rebooted my phone because of a franco kernel update, and it got stuck on the bootscreen. Tried everything, couldnt get it to boot, so I finally flashed stock using WUG, it worked. I then rooted and flashed custom recovery, and it got stuck on starting apps. Flashed stock again and it worked, repeated the root, and it got stuck on starting apps.
Anybody know whats going on?

You should do a CLEAN install, wipe dalvik / cache / System and Data, the last two ones are very important to wipe, otherwise you got stuck on boot.
It is best to flash your rom using recovery and forget the toolkit, just upload your rom on your N4, get to recovery => install => choose the rom, that's it.

I did all that before, and it still didn't work.
I think your problems are related to flashing the recovery, did you try to revert back the the old one ?

TWRP not booting system

I tried to factory reset a custom ROM, got sent to TWRP then I can't reboot to system from there. Tried a clean install but to no avail. I've looked around on the internet and I think I have to reinstall stock ROM and then reinstall custom recovery and ROM, except if I were to install the stock ROM once again (with sp tools) I need my phone to be turned off, not in recovery mode. So how exactly should I proceed now?
EDIT: Managed to get rid of the TWRP bootloop by restoring from a stock nandroid I've found on the forums, coupled with flashing a stock recovery image using TWRP. Reunlocked bootloader, flashed TWRP all over again and then flashed custom ROM and Gapps. Everything running fine now.
