Internet accelerator - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

sup buddies. i wanna just get ur opinion on this.. HOLA internet accelerator, u can search it on google play ive been using it for a day now doing some testing... and this is the results try it yourselfs look at the attached photo
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium

See a reply from hola.org here in XDA with details in this post.
They say they use many "technologies" for acceleration.
Hola accelerates HTTP and DNS requests, using multiple sources, compression, P2P protocols and other patented technologies (plus some other tricks!)

And he explains that the speed benefit in Speedtest.net results from simply caching the file that speedtest uses on your device. So the test only gives you the results how fast it can access your device.
Next example: youtube videos. Of course you can "accelerate" the access to a video if you do not have to download it anymore - what a surprise.
So in the end: caching in on your device makes you believe that you have a faster download.
Everything else is "Bulls__t bingo wording".

you sir have my like, only speedtest improved, anything else like browsing, torrent dling, direct downloading were normal - less than normal

Google DNS

Removed for now... seems to break location based apps. Will see if we can figure this one out
Lower latency in what regards? Connecting to the same server, google dns is always lower? How do you test this accurately?
Used spedtest.net app latency is always lower than stock vzw dns.also u will notice an increase in page rendering times

Lowered latency with increased rendering times? How does that work..? Throughput should be the same, regardless of the DNS used.

Rendering probably wasn't the right word... if u notice on 3g once u hit go it sits for a few seconds and then begins to load the page. After the flash the page starts to load almost immediately
loaded this up on RubiX 1.9.5. Before, Speed Test app would use the server in CA and give me ~120-150ms latency. Now it thinks I'm in KS for some reason (I'm in CA), so I get 300+. Not sure if it's the app freaking out or the DNS change affected it.
And when I try going in and changing the server manually, it doesn't even give me CA option because it's too far away from KS lol.
Which app are you using for your speed tests? Is that Ca as in california or Ca as in Canada? Havemt had an issue with selecting server... im in san diego ca

it's california, I should've clarified, sorry. Hmm weird then why it only gives me choices of KS and the states near it...
Oh and I use "Speed Test" app.

Ok, I tried it again and it finally gave me Modesto, CA server. My latency is now 55 ms down from 100+. So this change definitely helps, thank you!

Have u had issues with location based apps? Such as gasbuddy hotpads Idk anything else that heavily relies on location??
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
you might've missed my last post cause it was last on the previous page, but the issue fixed itself. I guess GPS wasn't updating correctly or something...
but no, to answer your question, I haven't really had any problems with location based apps. Hopefully that was just a one-time glitch with speed test
And I was using Google maps this whole weekend with no problems while having your patch applied.
Since it appears from the thread that using Google DNS doesn't break location-based apps, will you be reposting the how-to any time soon?
Thx!

I still have the patch saved. If you PM me your email, I can send it to you.
I hope the author doesn't mind, since the only reason it was taken down was because of my bug report, which doesn't seem to be related to this change.

[Q] A way to download from Rapidshare or FileSonic?

I download alot of movies on my phone and so far megaupload, hotfile, duckload, letibit, depositfiles, fileserve and oron work.
Though there is tricks to downloading from some of these sites, like depositfiles wont download but it will say "download couldt start and will take you to another page and if you push "try again" then it will take you to another page and if you hold down "try download again" and "save files as" then download will start. There is few more tricks like that for other sites.
Does anyone know if there is a trick on how to download from rapidshare or filesonic?
I use Dolphin HD,maybe other browsers work with these sites, any help is appriciated.

I'd really be surprised if there isn't an app that is designed to do this. If ones can be made for full scale computers why not our phones? Time to go look...

Thanx,it worked!
I tryed using regular Opera before but it rendered pages like stock browser. But today I finaly tryed Firefox and bam Rapidshare and Filesonic work!
I should have tryed Firefox earlier but I didnt because of bad reviews.Firefox is a beast for early versions,i can already tell that it will be the best browser once they improve speed and make it look better, and make the file smaller-smaller file=faster speed.
Oh sht,i can even use firefox personas(skins) wih it!
Thanx again, now my laptop is almost useless.

In FireFox's case I hear the use the EXACT same rendering engine as the desktop version...so any site that renders on your Desktop on FireFox will render exactly the same on your phone minus Flash..I hear its also easy to port firefox add-ons to it..

Torrent Client for android??

Does anyone know of a good torrent client that I could use on my phone?
EZTVDroid has one of its own, but I use tTorrent, which allows you to manage the torrent downloads directly to your SDCard. Hope you are on wifi or unlimited.
Ok i will check that one out. Atorrent doesn't work for things already on my sdcard and swarm kills my phone
I have wondered why anyone would want to use a torrent client on their phone. I personally use a remote torrent controller that controls utorrent on my pc named Transdroid. That way I can start downloads from my phone, and not bog it down or have Verizon question any high data usage.
I am not trying to say anyone is wrong for using a torrent client on their phone, I would just like to know why.

I kind of agree with you, the only reason I can think of is that they don't have an alternate Internet provider. The only other reason I can think of is that they don't have a PC and only use their phone (I had a GF like that once).
I know that I have spent a few weeks at a time away from home with no other Internet than my phone, so that is my guess.
I hadn't thought to use it to torrent though
Yes, you are right. It's two things, a "control issue" and a "pc thing".
My linux box does the majority of my torrents, but I also travel a lot and want slightly more control to manipulate the torrent on my phone itself, which is also transferable to my linux box when I get home
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
You can do what I do. I add/start/pause/etc. Torrents from my phone remotely using Transdroid and they download onto my computer which saves battery, data and more. Then if I am out of town and need something I torrented, I download it from the computer to my phone using my FTP server. It's really quick for smaller files and if I have a large amount, I let it transfer overnight when my phone is plugged in. Then you also have access to all files, not just those you torrented.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Perhaps someone should give this person links/options to "remote" versions since there is an alternate to what I use/do.

And an FTP server is easy as hell to set up and use and requires minimal CPU power.

I actually did find swarm, but it caused my phone to reboot whenever I tried to start a torrent.
The reason I don't use something like transdroid is that my phone is currently my only Internet, as I tether to my computer to get Internet.
aDownloader (free in marketplace)
aDownloader is a native bit torrent (bittorrent) downloader for Android phones. You may search online torrent and or add torrent from local sdcard.
It is free in the marketplace but I cannot post a link due to the rules on XDA.

I no longer use swarm. Want my $ back as the dev has not updated the app to compete with new clients. It has a limited number of peers and VERY slow download rates. Not to mention a men leak that leaves ur phone really sluggish. TTorrent Full or adownloader are the two best at the moment. I recommended using torrentfu to remotely download to ur home PC instead.

The search for a decent browser....

I really like Dolphin and UC browser but both of them leave stuff running even after you've closed the app. If you look in settings, apps, running apps, you'll find that there are services and processes that are still running long after you've finished using the app. UC browser actually runs even after you've chosen 'quit' from the menu!
Boat browser is far better behaved and so is Chrome but Chrome has no full screen mode and Boat a little clunky to use.
Am I right in thinking that these running processes are using my battery?
I've emailed support for both UC and Dolphin about this and while they're quick to reply about other issues, they are both strangely silent about these running processes..
Can anyone suggest a browser that runs full screen and doesn't pound the battery?

Maybe you can try “lightning browser”, its fast. However, in my own experience, i dont like the little options for me to choose and the full screen mode of it, coz in full screen mode I must scroll to the top and overscroll to bring-out the tabs which is not so convience in my view, but i think you might give a try.
P.S. The free version of this browser supports only 5 tabs and 5 bookmarks, plus version dont have the restriction
pay or g00gle it (seqrch for #APP_NAME apk) to get the plus version

You can always get the current version of Naked Browser from the web site here: http://nakedbrowser.com/android/
Dolphin had been phoning home all visited URLs to their server, even unencrypted https URLs which is a serious blunder. They're not the only ones pulling crap like this. Most Android browsers are spying on users in some way.
In response to this situation, I made Naked Browser. It will never spy or monitor in any way. There aren't even ads. It does not run on boot, does not phone home data, etc. It is just a web browser. If you use the exit button, it actually exits. If you return to your home screen, it goes to sleep and does not wake up unless you go back to it. Here's the XDA thread for it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1929663

android.permission.READ_CONTACTS
It is not widely known but apps can query contact data without requiring the READ_CONTACTS permission in the manifest. Why would a web browser need to read your contact data?
android.permission.GET_ACCOUNTS
android.permission.USE_CREDENTIALS
These could potentially be used by the browser to auto-login to Google but they could also be used for really evil purposes.
android.permission.READ_LOGS
Basically no app should have this privilege. All kinds of data can be gathered this way.
Execution of external commands
This is scary because it means the app may be extending its tentacles almost anywhere, especially if you are rooted.
Cipher(AES/CBC/PKCS5Padding)
They're encrypting data, presumably to phone it home. WebView-based browsers do not need to do this as the WebView component handles all encrypted traffic. This is something extra added by this app which may have a legitimate use but may also be phoning home data about users.
