Most of our devs are gone. They've run off to the Evo portal and ebayed their Heroes. In turn, people bought their Heroes on Ebay and we will have a flood of noobs coming. We probably won't have a rom update from a major dev ever again, and... it makes me feel empty inside.
Darch is still here, Regaw is still here. Not sure who else is.
Toast and flipz have said hero dev will continue, just slow. I think jschi didn't jump ship either. And he is a genius

It doesn't surprise me, it just... makes me sad.
When I saw Damage's new update, my heart skipped a beat..=(
But there is no hate at all towards those who went to the Evo.
I mean, they were doing it for free, so we can't really get mad lol.
But to answer, yes, I feel slightly empty.

Heh. Look at the bright side: now other people can take over the reigns; and trust me, some people here are more than capable at doing so.
Don't feel empty, but I am a little upset with HTC. They've pretty much made us dependent on the developers here. I would be fine with stock roms, but it's pretty clear that HTC is pretty much done supporting the Hero. 2.1 is it and the update comes with its own issues that weren't in 1.5.
I got an Android phone with the assumption that it would be supported with the latest updates at a faster pace and for much longer than what I'm seeing by HTC. It makes it pointless to ever do another contract if I'm going to be stuck with a phone that won't get regular updates from the manufacturer. I'm not sure if I would get another HTC phone. I hope Sprint gets the Nexus One.

^ this and i am thinking that devs from other areas will step into heros now that they can pick them up much cheaper than before the evo was released. look at some of the older phones, they are still going strong in the dev department.
i am not worried even if i end up with 'just' darchdriod as my daily rom for the rest of my contract (another 6 months or so).

I'm not that sad... lol. I am, however, sweltering, tired, and need to turn my AC on. Darchdroid is the best OC rom out there, and RegawMOD is the best NON-OC rom out there, so I think we are pretty good in the dev side of things.

The Hero is sort of the unwanted stepchild of XDA now. But, all the first-time Ebay adopters are coming to our "rescue".
I cant do what flipz, damage and darch do. Just naming top 3 roms.
But i can put things together and fix broken things. Ill be stuck with my hero for quite some time. So im always willing to collaborate with others to get something working.
Also im sure we could ask a few questions here and there to the main devs for advice and help. No matter what phone they currently use.
I think we have almost everything we can think of, OC, roms, JIT, themes etc.. I think that covers all the big breakthroughs for are hardware restricted phones. But we can always improve on them, many here are capable. So yeah it sucks these big names left but im honestly not worried about the future of the CDMA hero.
Save up and buy an evo.
This is just how the phone loop rolls, once theres something better , you don't go back.
I will be keeping my hero, but yeah look at it this way , XDA devs are not the only ones dumping the phone , so is sprint.

I don't know why the EVO still does not have full root that can support custom recovery without a computer and since it doesn't have full permissions you can't pull stock apk's and wifi tether does not work. So you can be happy that you have a fully customizable phone for now.

It does have "full root" but the storage has nand locked/protected. It's like that little switch on and SD card or floppy to protect it only its software not hardware theyll break it in a week or two. You can pull apks in recovery... and WiFi tether needs a netfilter kernel so give em a week and it will work.

Well Regaw should be back at it soon and with you here it should all be ok anyways.
So Samsung's bragging again that it's going to introduce a "evolution" and in the picture its the Galaxy S and then a white blog signifying it's "masterpiece" that it hopes to unveil on Feb. 13. Speculation seems to point at it's possibly them actually showing off the Vibrant 4G or another device.
The only "evolution" that Samsung could introduce, is the one where they support their devices instead of tossing new ones out there.
Take a read,

no but seriously....im really into modding phones, and any device-specific forum ive ever been on has been full of people complaining about the same things. I just dont know why everyone doesnt just accept the system for what it is. And ALSO that the system is definitely out of Samsungs hands....but if they want to survive as a company, they have to keep up with that system.
I understand they can't just release a phone and wait 2 years to release another one. But ( I guess I cut the ending short) they need to work on supporting what they have out now along side what they push out in the future. It's sad that the cell phone business has taken on Apples take of things. Make a new device, sells millions. A year later push out the same phone but with "enhancements" and newer things. Wait another year and do the same thing, and then drop support for the original after the 2nd one comes out..

Unfortunately as soon as Samsung announced a phone with 4.3" SuperAMOLED+ screen and a Tegra2-beating Orion SOC, everyone who were complaining about the Android updates will secretly be counting their savings so that they can get the latest and the greatest hardware. Lack of updates, lack of device support, lack of customer loyalty, unkept promises, hardware/software issues, blahblahblahhhhHHHhHHhHHHhhhHH
Nowadays, smartphones are outdated/obsolete within 6months of their release. Yes, indeed, its a monster that the manufacturers have created for themselves, and theres no way they can keep up with their competition while also keeping every single one of you crying babies happy. Yes, its an ugly industry, and it isnt fair. BUT ITS THE WAY IT IS.
*****, moan, *****, moan, *****, moan alllllll you want. File your class action lawsuits, spam their customer service lines, create facebook pages and twitter accounts, start petitions. do you think its going to change ANYTHING?? do you think its just THAT easy? you guys just sound so damn pathetic with all of your bellyaching.
Youre on a forum that is meant for modding your device, and making it better than the way it came out of the box, yet you are complaining that they wont do it for you. Then why are you guys even here??? No device is perfect. And when the day comes that they do release a perfect device, they will release an even more perfect device shortly after....thus making the prior one not perfect, and people *****ing for updates on their old ones to make it as good as the new one. Round-and-round we go.
Consumers will NEVER be happy, and you guys are proving that. Do some research before buying a damn phone next time. Dont buy it right when its released just because its the hottest thing, and having the phone that is on all the commercials gives you a sense of purpose. Maybe next time wait a couple months, come onto XDA, and see if the children are whining about the damn GPS. That would be a tell-tale warning, wouldnt you say? Then Samsung wont have your money, youll still have your upgrade to play with, and you wont be stuck with a device that didnt get sharted from god's ass. Problem solved.
To me what's just as bad as the people that constantly complain are the people that get so defensive about it as if they have the majority of stock in Samsung. To break it down simply- Samsung doesn't care about you. They don't care about you the whiner, or you the blind follower.
Manufacturers aren't expected to cater to every whim of the consumer but I don't think anyone could come up with a valid argument in support of Samsung's continually delayed release of software both now and with other devices in the past.
In the end it's a great piece of hardware that we're lucky to have such excellent support for here on XDA and other places on the internet but it's just not supported by Samsung. They could learn a lesson or two from HTC. Sadly, if you're buying a Samsung or Motorola, this is the risk you're taking.

ouch. thats grim.
Honestly, I'd be very surprised if the Evo 3D was locked down like this. I'm willing to bet that Verizon asked them to make it this way, and they complied.
Sprint, on the other hand, hasn't been the type of company to try to keep everything locked down and make it harder for the dev community. Big V definitely has, as exemplified by the Droid X.
Besides, even if it does come out all locked down like that, the devs here will have it opened up within a few days.
that would have been my next question, if V had requested this setup specifically.
it would seem the "other companies" are oh-so-bunched-up re: tethering w/o a plan, being the big issue with custom ROMs. Sprint might not be as concerned (so far) about that, and thus, not concerned about rooted phones? idk... idle speculation
No surprise here. After all, they did cripple their gpus for over 4 years. This is nothing. Htc = garbage.
Hoping that this is just because of douche-baggery on Verizon's part -- that they requested the phone be totally locked down, like the Moto products that they are selling.
On the other hand, the devs only took three days to break all that ****, so perhaps it's a case of "anything you can do, we can do better," and HTC/Verizon's efforts will meet with utter #FAIL.

I think it does. I remember back when we were starting to flashing ROMs... well they had to be signed in order to be installed or the recovery program would outright refuse to put it on the phone. I guess the implication on this is that even the recovery image itself must be signed in order to install as well as the ROMs. Now, with the EVO, the recovery part does not care if the ROM zip file is signed or not (well, RA has this setting disabled so it will flash regardless) but there was one point where any file that needed to be flashed on the device needed to be signed.

According to some of the comments it is the same old locked bootloader as the evo and incredible. I doubt HTC will try that hard to lock them down.

I have casually tried both iPhone 4 and iPads and never received the impression that they were better spec-ed than the latest Android or even Windows equivalents. Now that Apple is at war with basically anyone who isn't them in tech world, I think they will consistently lose any raw horsepower race (Samsung may not want to sell to them anymore for one). Maybe they will retain an edge in usability for some people, but they are the design kings, as long as you don't despise iTunes like I do, and price gouging.
I'm jumping with my wife. I started on AT&T and iPhone then moved to sprint because cost of the plan. I've seen both sides and so far you can't beat the stability and battery if your willing to drink Steves koolaid!
Looks like I finally made up my mind about what my next phone is going to be. Iphone 5 is it. I was gonna get the Epic Touch but quickly remembered the fact that my phone is on 2.2.1 in an era where Android is at 2.3.6, and how frustrating the Gingerbread leaks have been so far. Not to forget the fact that Samsung doesn't even have the courtesy to share their source code or drivers so that we can create our own up to date roms. I'm never dealing with Samsung again. It's been a nightmare.

As opposed to how up to date Apple keeps their phones. With Apple you don't even have to worry about late updates. Ios frees you from that hassle. You have great, fast, stable, low latency audio software, and you can jailbreak your phone and customize it as much as Android in terms of appearance and functionality. Plus you have much more games and apps. Can't lose.

Looks great besides this first comment on the website.
"My only problems are: very very poor reception, it is constantly on roaming. I am not sure if this is a Sprint problem or the phone."
Good Specs on the Device. Although I'd never own one. I'm an HTC Fanboy.

Yeah I might get one either that or the Galaxy Nexus. We know your a Sense Fanboy lol. A lot of other users on here are too even tho they'll never admit it. I'm more of a AOSP Fanboy just because of functionality. If you like Sense go with the Evo LTE like drob311 did. I'm sure it'll get plenty of Sense roms and hardly any AOSP roms.
Always have been. Has a lot to do with the TP2 days. I've run just about every kind of ROM since starting to mess with Android. But came to the conclusion that I just like Sense Best.

Considering HTC makes pretty much all of their phones with Sense you don't see that as a issue? I've gone through 3 shifts now so what makes HTC phones that much better? They feel well built but crap out and break down easily. Doesn't live up to the quality I expected from HTC...

Go get a Samsung and experience the radios crashing, and you will realize HTC is the way to go... Even the almighty galaxy nexus had the loss of service bug, due to the radios crashing, and I forgot to mention the random airplane mode bug... Sprint and sammy have screwed up every phone that's been released by sprint, not just the moment, but EVERY Samsung device. It's very pathetic... I'll personally be sticking with HTC...

HTC doesn't make their phone perfect either, isn't that why your on the Evo LTE right now? All brands of phones have their flaws. Look at how nice the samsung screen resolutions are. All I'm saying is don't paint a perfect picture for HTC because it's not all peaches and roses.. Your looking at Samsung from a biased standpoint because of your experiences with the Samsung moment.

Say what you will, but HTC phones don't drop signal like sammys (requiring a battery pull)... You should get a Sammy, you would fit right in with that crowd... And also, I had many moments, a few intercepts and I have family members with epic touch, sg3, nexus s 4g and the g nexus... All of them have serious complaints, the main one being loss of signal and the airplane mode bug... Imagine this... You are on a road trip with your kids, you get in an accident, you go to call 911 because someone needs medical attention, you realize that your phone has no signal and the battery needs to be pulled. While you are pulling the battery, the person who needs medical attention could die in the 2 plus minutes it takes for an unrooted phone to boot... All phones have their flaws, keyboard phones even more so... Like I said, upgrade to a crapsung, you will love the pure crap for a product that you were sold... Sorry, but if you ask anyone that's owned a Sammy and an HTC, almost all of them will say that HTC makes much more reliable phones... And stop talking about me being a sense guy... I run ALL the Roms that are released, sense or aosp, doesn't matter to me...

Normally I would argue, but, it sounds like you are thinking about getting a Sammy, which means you won't be around the shift forums anymore... Samsung makes the best phones ever, I highly recommend them...
