I used to update ROMs on my Motorola Defy, but I never had to reinstall Gaaps.
When you update PA, you have to reinstall Gaaps (if I have understand well), is it the same for ofther Nexus 4 ROMs ?
I'm really confused, thanks
PS: Do you still have to update ROMs using recovery (flash .zip) ? Or is there apps which do that ? I heard CyanogenMod have now an OTA update function, is it the same for PA ?
on most roms you do have to reflash the gapps after flashing the rom, unless the rom includes a script that saves them. but, it takes a few seconds to reflash the gapps anyways.

You could make your own script to save them if you wanted. It's not difficult. However, I think occasionally the PA devs modify the gapps with their own changes so that is why they don't setup a script to save them since you would need the new custom versions.
btw, you're better off flashing in recovery. apps that flash occasionally mess up. goo manager can be used to download and flash roms/gapps/kernels.
Ok thanks guys !

Hi,
It's like on all custom roms (CM, AOSP, AOKP). If I remember right Google requested that the Gapps should not be included in the roms. It was at the time of my Gnex if I'm not wrong.
At a moment LiquidSmooth rom included the Gapps and they remove them due to Google policy.
Maybe a dev can reply... Need to confirm but there was an history about the request from Google to not include the Gapps but as a separate package.
EDIT: more information here: http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/Google_Apps

As the guys above said, it's mostly a license issue. You cannot include Gapps in a product you launch as your own because unlike other apps like Messaging and Camera, Gapps are not exactly a part of AOSP; they are made by Google. The thing is, developers like the one for your Motorola Defy get away with adding gapps in their ROMs because they are unofficial builds of CM and Google cannot keep a check on all the ROMs out there. The same way the case for my Samsung Galaxy Ace.
For official builds, however, you always require Gapps package to be flashed separately because Google has an eye on the official ones.

Any ideas? I've tried pushing system apps to the device, but I get nothing but force closes....
So does anybody know of a gapps package that will flash on 4.2.1(cm10.1)?
I'm using the Banks one from N4 themes and apps, no FC's. Contains the appropriate files in addon.d for b/u of Gapps during flashes etc... Although I won't know if CM has re-merged that functionality until I flash tomorrow's build.

That was quick, checked for an "official" version earlier and it wasn't there.
I recently installed and played with Task650's AOKP ROM, and loved the stock jelly bean apps like phone, contacts, and messages. However, I have some circumstances that made me flash the stock firmware back. I would really like to have the stock Google apps instead of the stock Samsung ones, is it possible to install them on stock firmware? I tried to restore via Titanium Backup, but to no avail.
Also, I really enjoy the IR blaster feature, and noticed it was not functional on the AOKP ROM, will it be supported on any future ROMS. Or are the device drivers kept under Samsung lock and key or something? Will the Google version coming out have a firmware that supports the hardware? Pending its ability to do so, will that firmware be available to install on ATT devices?
I am a first time Android user as of a few weeks ago, and am not looking back. I realized that all of the features I had to jailbreak and tweak on the iPhone are available easily! I've been scouring the forums and soaking up as much as possible.
Thanks
when you install aosp-based firmware, you then have to immediately follow that up with flashing gapps (usually posted in the dev's thread) to have the stock google applications.
some of the touchwiz features, including IR, are not available on aosp.

my bad. gapps packages are for aosp roms. google apps are generally included in touchwiz roms. if there are specific ones that are not included, you can find them on the google play store

You're not looking for the gapps. You confused "Google apps" with "AOSP system apps made by Google". There's a thread in Themes and Apps for running CM10.1's mms.apk on TW. Minor bugs introduced. I'm not sure that I've ever seen AOSP dialer/contacts running on TW, but search around. If people have gotten it working on other devices, then there's hope.

Check the t-mobile thread. I remember seeing some stock based roms themed to resemble aosp. They used the mms and dialer apk from aosp.

no need for gapps with TW.
Yesterday i saw CyanogenMod Installer app for android...
It is quite helpful for those who are flashing roms first time on their device after rooting...
This app also tells them whether a Cyanogen rom is available for their device or not...
I m currently working on paranoid if this feature is added to PA source itself then it will cause pain for other roms...
This will be a arsenal for paranoidsss...
Have a look at CM installer
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.cyanogenmod.oneclick
I m not promoting CM but giving u all idea atleast...
It won't cause pain for other roms. People are not exactly lined up waiting for an installer for PA before they can flash it. Not to mention CM devs are quite open to using roms other than CM after using their installer. Its about more than just flashing your favorite rom. its about having a choice other than what your carrier forces you into. And since devs often borrow features from other ROMs, this would hardly be pain for other roms. As tools make developement easier, i think we will see more roms or at least modified roms that have peoples own touch added to them.
Installer will be great for newbies...

if a rom offers an installer app then it will attract new users who havent flashed custom roms yet...this what i meant..
Custom ROM Installer
I think that an Automatic Installer for the first flashers would be indeed "comforting" Because I've started to flash custom roms recently and my first one was a pain, not because of the steps....The steps for installing the recovery tool and all are pretty easy and all. But we have the feeling we are going to brick the device at the first flash! hehe Maybe an automatic installer that detects your device model would be kinda safe for unexperienced users...
But nowadays I find it nice to manually flash roms, keep backups, etc...
Oh well...not a bad idea at all in my opinion ;}
That CM Installer is stupid. I used and thought when it said, it will delete your things. I processed that as the normal factory reset in TWRP for a clean flash. Apparently it was a full freaking wipe. Lost everything. I think that process they used it unnessesary.

I don't understand why they needed to wipe the SD card, but you should have read the instructions and backed up your data before installing...
Just as an FYI, the still-in-progress Omni installer is going to be designed such that it can be used by any project. (And cooperation with other projects for inputs is welcome!)
I'm not working on it myself, it's xplodwild's baby - but as an example, there's serious consideration of hooking it into XDA's devdb, although I think it'll require some dependencies metadata to be added to devdb for it to work. (e.g. automagically handle gapps).

Put together using PA GApps's structure and updated files from different ROMs, together with factory images.. The install script will show the it'll install pa_gapps-full-4.4-20131126-signed.zip, but, in reality, it will install the new files compatible with 4.4.x The backup script works, but I highly recommend installing GApps at each ROM update, since, sometimes, it just doesn't work very well. I always flash GApps when updating, and I never have issues this way.
You can either wait for the OP of PA GApps to update the package, or use this.
I am not responsible for any damage to the device. Do a backup before, just in case! A boot loop is the worst case scenario that can happen. Didn't happen on my end, and I hope it won't happen to you guys, either.
Enjoy!
UPDATE 12-Dec-2013
Pack updated with 4.4.2 files.
NOT compatible with ART (didn't test, though - might as well work, since the base structure and files from PA's GApps and BaNkS' GApps are ART-compatible; in case you want to test out, do a nandroid first!)
PhotoSphere installs only on hammerhead, manta, mako, razor; no Google Dialer
Link #1
PhotoSphere and GDialer for all devices (Might cause errors, two dialers & two cameras, beware! It's a forced method, by including both the dialer and camera in /system/app and /system/priv-app)
Link #1
GApps mini modular package
Link #1
Credits go to BaNkS for letting me use files from his GApps.
Credits go to hanschke for testing out.
Credits go to TKruzze for the structure of GApps.

Woks fine with omniRom 4.4.1 release nightly (homemade), here.

Yeah, I will update the package today.
I've been looking at buying the phone since there's a sale going on Amazon for $249USD, but after reading a bit through the forum, seems like custom roms will have gapps preinstalled?
This would be a real deal breaker for me, as I'd like to go microG, Xposed FakeGapps, FakeStore, Fdroid route, Google Free, as much as possible...
But if gapps have to be presinstalled, anyone used Terminal Debloater and uninstalled gapps with it?
Hmm
I dunno about using the rom without gapps, but CarbonRom doesn't come with gapps.
I use it with gapps and its pretty smooth, so I'm assuming it should be the same without it.
CarbonRom also has signature spoofing included.

I was reading something on XDA over this, not sure now, sounded like because of some issues custom roms had to come with Gapps preinstalled for Essential.
But now you mentioning Carbon without, well, guess that throws that out the window, I hope... LOL
Every custom rom I've installed didn't have any Gapps installed, expect for just a few of the the basics, phone, messenger, calendar...
I never install Gapps, I use microG, Xposed, F-Droid here on my phones, I like to be as Google Free as possible.
Thanks
A lot of the essential (mata) roms have gapps included because it's actually a pain to install it post-install because of the 2 partitions.
So many users get confused and end up flooding the Rom threads with the same questions on how to install gapps.
I thought if they want the Gapps, then people would just pick and choose between the various OpenGapps and flash one in twrp?
hmm

Typically, you would do that, but for whatever reason Essential Phone is a lot harder to install gapps on; apparently it's not as easy as flashing in TWRP, I'm not daring enough to mess up the rom install by installing it on my own
My guess is, the partitions really throw a wrench into the equation.
Thanks!
