[Q] Weird screen defect on my N4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There's some permanent smudge on my n4 screen, upper right corner.
It's very visible on direct sunlight, and when the screen's off.
Hard to explain it, looks like permanent fingerprint
or some missing layer on that part of screen.
Any way to get rid of it?

That's strange man.. Have you tried anything to clean it with? I etched my back glass a bit with some acid at work.. I used a bit of car wax and it took care of it..

I don't feel it when in use,
I don't know if it's on the top layer of the lcd.
what do you recommend I clean it with? car wax? any popular cleaning solutions for lcd?

I know wax sounds weird, but it's a safe yet aggressive way to clean it.. Use a soft micro fiber cloth, just make sure it's not a compound/wax... Worked for me at least...

I've got exactly the same problem on mine, except mine goes all the way down the right hand side. Phoned up Google support and they've given me an rma. I'll let you know how it goes.
I've seen some nexus 7 owners have had their devices replaced for a similar issue.

Looks like your clearcoat or whatever they use for protection on top of the LCD came off.

Arrrgghh I've scratched it. ALREADY.. :( (the paintwork)

Any tips on touching up the chrome paint work. Dropped it getting out of the car. Scuffed the corners.
Had ordered the cover but hadn't arrived yet. Highly recommend some sort of cover before taking this beauti out.

i hate you
Wrong screen protector and it's on upside down.
of course its upsidedown? better some old screen protector than non.
Any one tips on touching up the plastic chrome edging.
Ouch. Looks like you have the wrong sized screen protector on - it looks the same as mine. Came with my Case-Mate, not sure why they provided the wrong protector. Maybe they hadn't produced the right ones yet and and thought the wrong size was better than nothing.
That my worst fear ..ouch
Too bad the didn't get rid of the crome and go all black like on the nexus s
I did this to my vibrant...did u get at store? If so just swap it. Make something up like randomly rebooting

get a black (not translucent) silicone case, and you are all set.
I did the same thing like second week I had my AT&T Captivate, did not bother me much. No phone is gonna stay scar-free forever
i just want to say:
O dear think its time to use my case

well if you want guys who have lots of paints, and who might be able to cover it, then try looking for one of them game workshop places, they have loads of paints in there and other stuff, I dropped a hd cam year ago and I passed by one of these shops and guy in there found a paint to cover it perfect.....just a thought
pray that the phone starts making awful noises and constantly reboots itself.
Then you have a reason to take it to Samsung repair centre.
The warranty i believe is 2years.
I ordered my cases from 2 ebay Us sellers and still haven't received them. Sad my phone from OK arrived first.

weird scuff or something under glass?

I've noticed 4 distinct 'scuffs' or 'stains' that appear to be under my glass. I don't know how else to describe them. I didn't notice them when I first got the phone, but you can only see them at a good angle where there's no glare, so the may have always been there. Now I can't *not* notice them. I'll try to post a picture tonight, it's a bit hard to photograph. I think if someone has it they would know what I'm talking about...
Does it kind of look like a gel substance underneath the glass?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
Hmmm maybe.. if I took a micro-drop of gel or glue and pressed it.... i'll try to post a pic later tonight.
its the oleophobic coating peeling off i think
Okay here are two pics of two of these things. I have four of them. I scratch and rub them and nothing, as if they are just beneath the surface...
From what I'm seeing it just looks like a scuff or scratch. I had a palm pixie before and it had the same markings on it.. Idk what it is.

I had something similar on my previous Nexus S. I think it's made from steam settling under glass.
I am on my second handset (Sprint) San Antonio, TX and both have had screen issues... I did notice something quite similar to your issue on my current handset but mine resides closer to the ear piece and camera... besides that I'm also experiencing the keyboard ghosting issue very visible when I open my notification menu.... I'm kinda hesitant to get a replacement since thus far my screens issues have only doubled ...

He is correct, mine is doing the same thing. Look at it this way, at least the top of your screen isn't separating, mine flexes'and'goes up and down under minimal pressure and makes all kinds of noise, its weird.

I think this seems to be the most likely scenario from my google research and comparison of other pics. Ugh. Hopefully it won't get worse. What's the replacement/repair policy? Call Samsung or take it to Best Buy ? It's been over 30 days.
Definitely not scuff marks, I keep the thing in a sock and treat it like gold.
I am currently on hold waiting for a rep at Samsung.....it has been 1 hour and 45 minutes and I have not talked to anyone... so if calling Samsung is what you opt to do ... get yourself a samwich and a six pack before hand!!
So I finally got through to a rep.... and they said...
JK... I gave up after 5 hour hold.(seriously) ...and decided the issue was minimal at this point

I have similar problems, except it'll only show if I breath moist air on to it. If you cover it up with a decent screen protector, it should go away unless the mark is really deep.

Omg major help.. build quality of my nexus 7.. screen glass is loose?

Hi I got my nexus 7 on Tuesday and yesterday I felt like there were some loose parts, but I just ignored it. Played around it more today and felt funny like the glass is coming off.. and just now I realized the glass is indeed loose.. from the casing.. I feel like I can literally take off the glass if I wanted to...
Does anyone else have this problem? What should I do... it doesn't affect the screen in any such way though. Everything looks fine on screen.
Except that when I play with it the glass/screen can be pushed and I can hear a crack sound like the glass is being clipped on to the casing..
OK like my left part of screen I push down and then pops back up ,making a clip sound.....
What do I do?

Sorry just found some posts on same problem.. but what's the solution? Refund? Replacement?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
It sounds as if you have the same problem as many others. I presume the solution would be to go RMA it as others are doing. Or, if you're the brave type, you can attempt to fix it yourself by tightening a few screws inside, instructions are somewhere here.

I would get a replacement. I get minor screen separation but only like a sliver over the Grey casing but nothing major.

The left side of my glass is loose too, not a lot. How long do we have to RMA ?
Crash

Water mark on TOP of N7 screen.

No, not water inside. Don't answer with the rice trick. ON.
Like if you leave a cup on a wood table. A ring of water damage on the screen. Does anyone have any tricks for glass cleaning that can apply here? Home remedies? No matter how many times I clean it or wipe it with screen wipes, etc. nothing works.

Are you sure that this was from water? Was it left outside with a cup on it? This could be damage from the sun where the ring of the cup was at and could have permanently stained the glass. Also how much liquid was in said Cup? Could be the LCD under the glass cracked from the pressure of the cup. As far as cleaning try getting an electronic glass cleaner kit like Zeiss that has cleaning gel and a soft (usually microfiber) cloth. It will only run ya a couple bucks at Walmart or a similar store. I've used this for cleaning all my electronic surfaces and it works well for regular cleaning not sure how it will do on a ring though but it's cheap and worth a shot. Worst thing it can do is not work and you can use it on all your other electronics to clean off normal stuff like oil and smudges from your screens. Best advice I can give without knowing more details about what happened to the device

I'm almost positive it was light pressure, just with a lot of condensation on the sides. (girlfriend's tablet, didn't see, and apparently memory is sketchy) I have never seen anything like it. I can't get it off! I'll head to Walmart later and try that. Thanks!

Mine has this "cup mark" when its dirty. When I clean the screen good...its gone. With a proper screen cloth. I think its from something inside that heats up or something.
I read about this before....several months back. Google it, you'll probably find what I'm talking about.
I still get it, but never bothered exchanging cause it does go away.

Fine scratches

Anyone else have very faint surface scratches on the back of their phone? No idea how I got them on this supposedly sturdy phone, but they are there. The phone has been on microfiber resting at all times.
My question is this, anyone think we can polish the back to get light scratches out?
Sent from my PH-1 using Tapatalk
I have this same thing going on, day 3 with the device. They're not that noticable but I know they're there and that's what bugs me. Somewhere I read said it could be scratches in oleophobic coating... IDK. JerryRigEverythings scratch test didn't show any markings until around 8 on the hardness scale.

Yea I saw the video. That's what has me annoyed. Essentials talk of durability is well documented. Add that to the fact that no cases are readily available means you kinda need to just put up with whatever happens. I'm wondering if we can just use a mild polish on the back to alleviate any minor scratches. Mine are almost invisible, but I their presence at all on a phone I baby, bothers me.
I think baking soda and water would do the trick.

I began to see fine scratches on the back of mine within days. I carry it in my front pocket with nothing else. I'm not aware of any rough treatment at all. I feel disappointed as well.
Same problem here ,another thing to be disappointed besides the Camera.
Same here
I was getting some as well. Try the polish out and see if it works? I don't think anyones tried it yet. Also if you don't mind covering the back you can always throw a skin on it. Also makes the phone a lot less slippery
I had quite a few on my first unit. My replacement unit I have none so far but I put a dbrand skin on it the minute I took it out of the box. My first one also had some scratches in the titanium near the charging port and a nick on the side that came from who knows what.

I also have fine scratches on the back of mine, with scratches near the USB c port. I also have a replacement supposedly on the way, but for freezing & random reboot issues. What did they replace your phone for? How long did it take for you to get the replacement?
Mine was for bad light bleed and the coating on the titanium coming off. Now I have to exchange again because the one they sent me has no speaker grille.
They sent the replacement next day air after they called to confirm. I had already sent my defective device in. This was before they started doing advanced replacement.
I wish you hadn't said anything.. I have them too
Maybe they could be polished out, but if it scratches this easily they are destined to return.
The phone is not supposed to be scratch proof. I'll be surprised if they'll take your phone back just because of slight scratched. Put it in a sleeve to install vinyl backing for peace of mind.
Mine had scratches from day one... lol Just placed my replacement order yesterday but I don't expect to get it anytime soon. Phone is off and collecting dust til I get the box to return it. They stated they wouldn't have any new devices (hopefully ones w/o much of the hardware issues like the speaker grille) in stock until this week when they emailed me last week.
I ended up getting a replacement from essential and placing a skin on the back to protect from getting these fine scratches. I don't hate it as much as I thought I would, I miss the shiny back but I like not having scratches and finger prints all over the back. Wahoo!
Sent from my PH-1 using Tapatalk
Had mine for over six weeks, and no scratches here.
I have a ton of scratches near the camera and magnet ports. No idea how they got there since I carry my phone in my pocket with nothing else in it. The only thing I could think of would be resting it on it's back on a table and sliding it to pick it up? Odd how it is only around the top part. Fingerprint sensor and below is spotless.

Close to that area are the magnets, magnets attract metal and sand, sand is one of the few things that can scratch glass and ceramic. Sometimes even if we believe or not we have sand in our packets due to daily life. Then we have scratches without knowing where we scratched.
Sent from my SM-N950U1 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I don't understand people complaining about micro scratches like it's something wrong with the phone? If you live in a place that has sand then you should have some type of protection on your device if you don't want scratches. Sand (silica) is harder than any coating and will scratch any phone. It also can become ubiquitous. One of the persons here literally has a user pic with them on the beach! Why make it Essentials fault when your failure to protect your phone is the issue?
I got my scratches at my corporate office in my cube. Nowhere near beach or anything of that sort. Was just playing with it and setting it up. Anyone who's not using any protection on the back and have been using it regularly saying they don't have any scratches, please share a close up video of your phone's back in nice HD detail close up so we can be in awe of your magical device with no scratches. Be sure to move it around under a bright light too. Lol. Be real people, you're gonna get scratches without a protection, whether it's a skin, case or whatever.
