Hey guys, my first post here. I signed up for this forum a little while ago and I've just been a lurker since today. Lots of great stuff on this forum!
I finally got my Nexus 4 phone when they went back on sale in late January, I came from an iPhone 3GS and I've been loving the switch every day since!
But now I have a problem that I hope you guys can help me with.
When I first got my phone the first thing I did was unlock the bootloader and root the device, I had 4.2.1 on my phone and forced the 4.2.2 update by clearing the cache/data of a few apps when it was mentioned on this forum (Bad mistake I think). I went to download titanium with root the other day to start to backup my apps/phone before I started messing with kernels and audio upgrades in case I messed something up and needed to reinstall. Unfortunately since this is my first Android phone I didn't know that upgrading would also remove my root access. Not a problem I though, I'll just go ahead and re-root the device, well that's where I started to see various problems.
I installed the SUser 1.0.4 zip on my phone (After I tried .98), booted up into the clockwork recovery option, extracted the zip from within clockwork to root my device again and nothing. I tried a couple of times, even tried the Nexus 4 toolkit but that didn't seem to work either. Rootchecker won't recognize that my phone is rooted.
In fastboot mode it shows my phone is
Secure boot - enabled (Green)
Lock State - unlocked (red)
When I was in the Nexus 4 toolkit I also noticed that it wouldn't recognize my phone's serial USB debugging mode even when I turned it on (Pressing the build number 7 times and checking the usb debugging box in developer options). When in fastboot mode my computer recognized my phone without a problem. I am still able to move stuff on and off of the phone through windows explorer, but only when it's NOT in debugging mode, my computer beeps like something is connected when in USB debugging mode but nothing shows up anywhere except in device manager. I tried installing the drivers that were posted for 4.2.2 and also tried installing the drivers through the toolkit but neither would fix that problem. Another thing I noticed was that I never got a prompt on my phone to allow my computer access to debugging mode like people mentioned that I should get.
Now either I messed something up somewhere along the lines, (good chance)
or I'm an idiot and i'm missing something really obvious (better chance)
Anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do or how I can get my root access back?
Thanks a bunch in advance for any help you guys can give me, and if I left some info out of here that you need let me know.

Oh wow... yup I'm an idiot and missed something really obvious....
I just installed the SuperSU app from the playstore and I do have root access again and apps request access.
ugh I'm a moron, I spent hours on this yesterday and as soon as I post this I fix the issue
Sorry guys
Now my only problem is I can't see my phone from the playstore on my computer but I'm not worried about that, I think I can fix that as I see another post up here for that same issue.
perhabs this helps

u dont need to extraxt su zip file....download drivers..use tool kit to unlock bootloader..then flash temporary clockwork recovery...flash su in recovery....download goo manager from playstore to flash permanent recovery

dont use toolkit. do it the long way so you know what you're doing otherwise you're walking in a room blindedly hoping you'd get through the maze.
in the long run, it'll be worth it. very simple & easy to do.

Okay first of all, let me start by saying this is my first post and I AM a noob, so be patient.
Okay, my problem is that I can't root my Sprint Samsung Intercept. I've tried SuperOneClick, Z4Root, Universal Androot, and some other one. NOTHING has worked. The SuperOneClick somewhat worked, it installed SuperUser but when I downloaded apps that require a root, they said my device isn't rooted.
I'm with Sprint and running 2.2.1.
Pease help because this is driving me crazy!!
i dont know how this stuff works either but my brother has that phone. it could be your usb isn't reading. or rather, your computer isn't recognizing the device. google samsung intercept usb and you'll see a lot of issues. this may not be your problem but its better to tell you just in case. so far for his cell phone, because he wants to tether it to his computer, so far nothing works. not downloading the right drivers. loading without debugging. mounting the sd card. thats one big solution that hasn't worked. i have high hopes for this other fix, to load samsung pc studio. New_PC_Studio_1.4.0.IL2_4.exe is the file. you can google and find it.
this site has some info. if it works and i remember to, ill repost and let you know.
en.kioskea (take out space, insert a dot)net/forum/affich-240949-samsung-sgh-f480-usb-driver-problem
hope this helps. if not then good luck. and heck if anyone else knows why exactly it does this and a real fix other than the whole disable usb debugger issue. then let me know. i even thought about trying to load the sdk for android to see if that would create some sort of connection with the phone and computer. thanks and take care
hope this helps
sdx-developers is the best place for intercept developement
http://forum.sdx-developers.com/int...ructions-on-rooting-spring-samsung-intercept/
follow the first step to get SWUpgrade setup (the rest is instructions for eclaire [pretty sure])
http://forum.sdx-developers.com/int...-2-2-(easy-root-via-swupgrade)-(battery-mod)/
flash this kernal with SWUpgrade and youll be rooted.
http://forum.sdx-developers.com/int...important-features-working!)-(updated-11311)/
i assume youll be wanting a recovery as well i recommend cm01 get the tar and flash it just like the kernal
intercept doesnt have many custom roms but there is tons of mods you can apply to the stock rom
I tried SWUpgrade and I bricked my last phone but it didn't matter because it was already defective.
Sent from my SPH-M910 using XDA App
did you patch SWUpgrade? delete everything in the binary folder except the file you were trying to flash?
ive never had a problem with it. it even saved me from quite a few softbricks in the short time ive had my intercept.
I did everything the videos and forums said to do. When I did that I got a different kernal but I couldn't get any service, my phone would restart every 2-5 minutes, and it would randomly vibrate. Until I got another one. I finally got SuperOneClick to get passed the "waiting for device" stage and I supposedy rooted my phone, when I tried to install apps that required root access they said my device is not rooted.

user level: android noob, but have a good grasp of comp stuff (I used to kill my own viruses when limewire was the defacto way to get download)...
comp, Win 7, old athlon dual core 64 4600, 3gb ram...
My n7 hasnt loaded kitkat, and I was getting annoyed with the constant "update ready".
I tried several times to install it, but each time it turned up an error....
Today I thought I would force an update with Skipsoft toolkit.
All seemed to go well, then....
things froze.....both comp and tablet and toolkit
I walked away, I didnt touch anything...for 2 hours. I literally went outside to do some errands, hoping things would "fix themselves".
I came back and disconnected, the tablet but the computer was still frozen...so I waited a few then, restarted the comp...
Now my tablet was stuck on the "google" screen.
I figured out how to get into the fastboot screen,
then the CWM screen.
from there, Ive tried,
Skipsoft toolkit,
Nexus Root Toolkit,
ADB manager (still not sure what this does except for downloads files, none of the apps in the toolkit file do anything)
fastboot.exe,
pdaNet drivers...
a couple of various tutorials (http://www.droid-life.com/2013/02/1...date-a-nexus-without-root-or-custom-recovery/) this one requires the tablet to be awake, but Ill be darned if I can get it to do anything...
On the good side of things, the Skipsoft toolkit, recognizes it, it displays the serial so theres hope. I hope.
But its never recognized in my computer, it did make the beep boop, when ever its dis/connected, until the I was trying the nexus root kit (they ask to remove drivers etc).
99% of the tutorials ask for the debugging to be activated. well it was but now...who knows.
with the skipsoft I get:
insecure boot image found
stock recovery image found
cwm image found
twrp image found
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^are these on the tablet or the comp?
once Im into the cwm screen, Ive cleared cache, and partition etc, nothing seems to help.
can someone help me before I brain my damage?
fixed it..wooooohoooooo

thank you for the tips ! the tool kit actually worked i had no os (deleted everything).
and used the 9 option (flashing stock) it worked !
Hey guys, so after hours of trying to figure out what i've done, i need some help
I had a fully working Nexus last night. I'd unlocked, rooted it and installed a custom rom a few weeks ago and everything was fine. Tonight for some reason i decided i wanted a fresh install, and stupidly deleted the entire internal storage off, and then wiped the Nexus before realising i hadn't put the zips back on to reinstall. So the Nexus is without an OS and completely empty. I can get onto bootloader, and into recovery, but i have nothing on the Nexus to use to recover or install anything. I have backups and fresh custom rom zips on my pc but i can't get them to the Nexus. I'm also struggling to be able to do anything using Wugs Toolkit, because it keeps saying it can't find fastboot or adb depending on what options i try. And i can't turn USB debugging on because i have no OS
I tried to reinstall the adb drivers and could see the nexus internal storage on my pc for a minute but it wouldn't let me copy anything onto it. Now i can't seem to see it again. As for fastboot, it keeps saying it can't be found. So at this point i'm clueless, and googling around is confusing me more and more as i have no idea about any of that stuff. The automatic toolkit is as far as my knowledge goes
Update: i tried using the SDK to use cmd prompt to put it back to stock, but it seems to be stuck on the screen with the red, yellow, green and blue circles now?
Update #2: used an updated adb/fastboot installer, after that my Nexus was actually being seen in Wugs Toolkit. Used the flash & unroot option, and i'm back on my device =) hoping i'll be able to re-root and reinstall my custom rom with no problems now *fingers crossed*
Update #3: Yay all fixed. No idea how i did that but thank goodness that's over with. Not sure how to delete my thread, sorry
For future reference try skipping the toolkits, if you do this manually there is far less likely to be communication issues or others at that
Glad it all worked in the end!
This is the first time I tried to root my phone. My phone is a Galaxy s4 GT-i9505
I followed this guide to the letter and it was supposed to be easy peasy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlVCjtRUrgs
Well when I was doing all that I got to the last step where I had to update my binaries but that didn't work and superSU kept closing itself down.
Someone recommended I do an factory reset and repeat all the steps, but then when I got back into my system I kept getting errors saying SuperSU has stopped and Youtube has stopped.
Those were really annoying and I tried another factory reset but I couldn't get rid of them, somehow they kept inserting themselves in my app list eventhough the apps did not work.
So I used TWRP to do an advance wipe and that's when things went horribly wrong since I had no clue what I am doing :S
I ticked the boxes Dalvik cache - Internal storage - Data and something else I can't remember.
After that was completed I could not boot up my phone anymore and now I'm freaking out trying to follow guides to fix this.
like this one : http://trendblog.net/fix-soft-bricked-android-device-first-aid-guide/
I installed this toolkit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2226263
But the problem is that my computer is not opening the device anymore through the USB port, and when I try to install these drivers : http://androiddrivers.net/samsung-android-drivers/galaxy-s4-windows-drivers-3264bit/
there's an error when installing it fails on mobile device MTP or something probably since my computer does not reckognize the mobile device anymore.
I don't have a SD card atm I never owned one. I might need to get one in order to fix this?
I'm totally new to this and totally regretting ever trying this and being so stupid and impatient as to try an advanced wipe before informing myself well enough.
I'm freaking out like mad here and now I have to go to sleep which I won't be able to catch ofc I'm so afraid I need to toss my phone and when I think about the $$$ .. well you know what I mean.
I've tried looking through these forums and guides but I just don't understand most of it and I can't get it figured out it's driving me insane.
Just chill, there is nothing wrong with your phone. You cannot kill your phone doing the things you did.
Just flash a stock firmware true Odin and everything will be working again. Pick a 4.4.2 rom though.
The reason why you are messing up is because you tried to use a year old rooting method.
So the steps you want to take:
- Flash a stock firmware
- Flash cf-auto root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219803
- Flash TWRP
- Flash this script in TWRP http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/general/scriptknoxout-complete-brutal-knox-t2807172
done.
Hello all,
After 5 hours searching and almost done, it seems like the phone won against me...
I have a friend who has his device under Android5, latest version, and need at least Android 6 to update his bank app, which required this update to work normally.
The worst part here, is that the device has the down volume button not working anymore (at all)
I wa a little rusty because I moved two years ago to iOS, but I have some memories with my old samsung and Nexus 6 flashing.
So here's what I've tried so far, I can forgot to mention some stuff because it's been a long work lol
So I have a 1GB SD Card and my indows 10 computer.
- I started to download and install all ADB and fastboot drivers.
- I've activated Debugged mod and OEM Unlock. I couldn't find if the bootloader is allowed for unlock or not, because the command didn't work. So I supposed that yes, it is. The device is the J3 SM-J320FN bought in France, new.
ADB work perfectly, but I didnt manage to get the device recognsied with the Fastboot mode. "ADB Devices" list the phone, but fastboot devices command does not show anything, it goes back to another line.
My friend didn't mentionned that he has installed a recovery. I don't know how, but the recovery is very basic. Here's a photo of the recovery screen. It appear when i press Vol+, home and power button, but I can't move anywehre because of the low volume button not working. Vol-, home and power doesn't work for the Download mode.
I finally managed to enter in download mode by using the command ADB REBOOT DOWNLOAD. With that, I honestly don't remember how I did it, but I think I've flashed a file which allow me to root the device from ODIN. With this, I've got confirmation of Root Checker app that the device is now rooted.
I've passed many hours to make some tests here and there, but nothing gave me a real result. Then I found two apps : ROM Manager and Flashfire.
ROM Manager : The app says that it doesn't find Superuser in System/bin/su. So it's like the device is not rooted. Nothing seems to work on the app too.
Flashfire : It seems like this app can do the job, but I can't finalize the process. So I've changed the year of the phone to 2013 to get the app running, I've tried a wipe, and here... Yahoooo ! A big Loading screen with many line codes, and then... nothing. My computer make the sound to say that it recognised the device, and a full blackscreen for 10mn. Exactly same process if I try to flash a ROM, or whatever action (even doing a backup).
I suppose it's because the app wasnt granted the root permissions. Not sure, because even if the phone seems to have the root status, I never get any pop up to ask if I allow to get the permission or not. I've tried to dwnload the APK for SuperSU app or something, and nothing seems to work.
So now, It looks like i'm close, but I also think that there is nothing more to do.
The device is powering on, with all its data, and seems rooted, but I can't do anything. It seems like the recovery is the only option to go trough the install.
So you guys, do you have any ideas of what can I do ?
I'd like to install LineageOS, but any ROM with Android 6.0 min. will be fine for me.
Also, pardon my english. I'm french lol
Thank you for your help..!

So why not just install Marshmallow with Odin?
After that install TWRP the same way?
Is it possible ?
I though that only installing custom rom will allow the phone to go beyond 5.1. Because the phone can’t find any update on OTA.
So if I download the correct file, flashing it should work ?
Thanks for the answer

I assumed the J320 had received the MM update. However it seems not.
In that case custom is the only way. For that you will need to install twrp with Odin.
Exactly what I though yesterday. I will call him to see what can I do.
So the latest versions of TWRP are compatible with the touch screen, and then the volume down button isn’t required to process ? After the recovery installed, I will be able to find the zip of the custom rom and install it right ?
Thank you again

Twrp is touch driven so no need for hard keys.
The only issue is that you need to reboot immediately into recovery mode after flashing twrp.
As down isn't working you will need to leave auto reboot enabled and catch it at the right moment to boot to recovery as it reboots.
Excellent. I will try that and will let you know. Thank you
