Low Volume Issue Redux - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
I know a number of people have been experiencing issues with the volume on playback of media on Nexus 7.
I am having similar issues. Tried to watch a movie (through Google Play app) on an airplane through headset and it was almost impossible to follow the dialogues.
Ive read about a number of solutions like Volume+ and Speaker Boost, but I dont believe any of them work with the latest 4.2.2 update, which I just received a couple of days ago.
I am going to keep searching but if anyone comes up with something that does work, please let me know and I will do the same. Its a major usability issue for me...

Interested in this too.

I'm waiting for Misledz to upload a new xlouder mod for 4.2.2 so I can test it, also his latest version for 4.2.1 works fairly well with 4.2.2

Thanks. I assume that requires root?
I'm hoping to find an easy volume+ like app to solve this. Bummer of a problem.

guys this one works with 4.2.2.
i tried it out last night and yeah it does work also it has option that it automatically switches itself off when you disconnect headphones/ext speakers so you dont damage your phones speaker
try the free version first

Audio Control/Output problems

Here's whats happening on my Xoom.
1) Audio - even if the volume is 1 click from silent, it plays full blast
2) Headphone - even with headphone jack plugged in, it plays full blast from speaker
I've adjusted audio w/ the rockers as well as in the system settings and they never play correctly. It's either FULL blast or too quiet to hear anything until it's raised to the max.
This applies to games playing, videos, music, anything that uses the audio.
Anyone else have this problem? It's quite frustrating...
Am I the only one with this problem?
Nope I have the same issue.

I've been having the same issue, but not universally. I can't recall specifically what app(s) didn't suffer from this, but I know there were 1 or 2. That said, as long as I haven't fabricated that memory, it would seem to indicate a software problem, not hardware.
My hope is that it will get fixed in one of the honeycomb updates.
I want to say that YouTube was one that didn't have the problem, but can't test (don't want to wake the misses)

You should clarify if you are using a bone stock XOOM or an unlocked/rooted/overclocked XOOM.
I do not have this problem, though I can say that All but the top 3 or 4 volume settings are inaudible. I spend my time at one or two steps below max since the max volume setting is majorly overdriven.
OK.problem fixed simply by restarting my Xoom lol..try it & see if it works and let us know please.

I did a factory data reset and it has solved the issue. However, I haven't added any of my media files yet to retest. Update on that to follow later on...
So after reloading some media, the sounds all messed up again. Bone stock Xoom...WTF
Even the headphone jack doesn't disable the rear speaker when inserted...
I'm tempted to return but I'm sure they'll fix this soon...HOPEFULLY!
edit: After the 3.0.1 update, all issues with audio have been fixed!

Volume problem!!!!!

Hey guys just wondering if anyone is facing any volume problems after the 3.1 update.........prior to the upgrade I had awesome crisp sound flowing through the speakers and equally good sound through headphones ......... after upgrading I lost sound on my left speaker and sound through headphones is barely a whisper .........any suggestions guys? Cheers in advance

I think my volume is lower then it was before the update.
now that I think of it, my max volume sounds quieter as well.
Right speaker sound is gone and left too quiet after update. Headphones too low. After two resets and no change returned to walmart. I cannot deal with such nonsense.

F**k I think my tf knew I was complaining about it ........ You guys are gonna love this...... Now only my right speaker side is playing music and only the left side on headphones is playing music........and before u smart assess out there say maybe its ur headphones ....its not I tried 3 different pairs :b

Mine works well after the leaked 3.1, maybe a bit less volume though. Balance on speakers and headphones is perfect. Left speaker no longer has issues, probably related to lower volume. FLAC on headphones is remarkably good.

No problem here.
Both speakers seems balanced and loud.
However this is my 2nd transformer I bought.
The first one i had the right side stopped working
then both died =/ lol RMA getting it back on 6th.
Sigh now its in stock. I can't sell it -.-
I am using the leaked version and sound is great. Of course don't expect a loud buzz from the built-in speakers, but with my JLAB headset it fine!
Just got mine yesterday... did the update and everything seems to work well except for the speakers.... Overall quality kinda seems crappy and my right speaker is much louder than the left one. This sux
I'm going to try to downgrade to 3.01 then upgrade on the leaked version ...... I'll keep u guys posted

[Q] Volume level poor - Nexus 7 32Gb Android 4.2

Just purchased a new Nexus 7, which I up-dated to Jellybean 4.2 before use. I now find a number of issues have occurred with this release, the worst for me is the very poor volume level. Searching the net shows this is a real issue, but I can find no solutions that work.
Can anyone help please?

I got this problem,too
Especially when it comes to use headphones, volume level seems to be very low also at maximum level...gets better with the speaker, that seems to have a decent volume level.
Are you guys unlocked? You could try to flash the system again to see if this fixes anything. You can go back to "having warranty" after that as I unlocked rooted flashed custom roms etc and then took it back to repair without any problems.
Yeah it is a 4.2.x thing.
If you are unlocked and have CWM or TRWP you can have a go with this. Works great for me.
Or you can try the two apps I've tried and works pretty good for me called volume boost and ear piece use them together and also go into there settings and set them to a 100% GOD BLESS YOU GUYS

I tried Ear Piece, but I found it useless: don't know how it's possible, but enabling the volume boost at any % level cause it to be lower than the stock one!

Ok,when I'll unlock the Nexus I'm definitely give this one a chance!
I have to say though that I refer particularly to the audio part of videos,as I consider the volume level in Google Play decent (not really high, but powerful enough)
Anyway I find that with the stock video player and with BS free the volume level of the videos is kinda low even at 100%...not VERY low,but not that great as you would expect from the maximum level of a device (my iPod touch is way louder than this even at about 80%)
No problems with output volume for me on 4.2.1 is louder than my Xperia S, however it does keep popping up with the warning about high listening volumes, my Xperia only warned me once.
I think there is European laws on volume output, I remember on my cowon mp3 player I had to choose China as my country to unlock full output volume as China is unaffected by the European laws, probably all deaf too!

Yep,that's another boring problem...
I also suspect that the European law is the issue about that, but I don't see any way to solve this except from using the device as a non-EU citizen (which means using it in another language for a non english guy like me)

I have the same issue with the Nexus 7 32 gig and Jelly Bean. I tried some free apps and none worked. Then I remembered that XBMC I use on my desktop allows you to boost volume when playing video or music files. I found an android app for XBMC and installed it. Problem solved ,at least for media playback.

Extremely low microphone volume during calls

Callers at the other end have difficulty hearing me, and I've never been able to find a solution. At first, I thought it's the ROM I was using, but after flashing the stock rooted ROM, same problem. I'm using the correct baseband. I'll do a test tomorrow, returning the phone to factory condition with the latest images from Google.
Has anybody gotten this problem and was able to fix it?
Update: Back to factory condition. Issue still isn't fixed.
Newer update: Called Google Play Store via this number 1-855-836-3987. They'll be sending a replacement.

While i am not stock, I did notice this one time with my phone... like extremely LOW to the point i was pressing the phone HARD against my ear to hear.
Solution? I went ahead and flashed Paranoid Android 3.56 and flash the Louder volume MOD in the themes and apps section. That fixed my issue, I also know that not all of you will want to root, and that this SUCKS. but try to restart the phone.
Just root guys, this phone was made for that

Oh actually the issue I'm talking about is different. The ear piece volume is fine, but whenever I talk to someone on the phone, they can barely hear me unless I use speaker phone. I was actually using Paranoid Android, and I was being told I can barely be heard. So I flashed back to factory to see if it was a ROM issue. Sadly it wasn't.. On factory ROM I can still barely be heard.

I tried using headsets and the results were pretty much better..
Wish I could help. Just had to RMA mine today. Completely stock, no mic. Works when plugged in, sometimes, but for the most part no audio. When it is plugged in, the wife says I sound like I'm trapped in a bottle lol echo and static.
I had the same problem when I was running full stock. It was really annoying to hear "I can't hear you..." every other sentence.
This won't help if you do not want to root or run custom ROMs but since I switched to PA 3.56 and Matr1x kernel the people on the other end of the line haven't been complaining. I imagine for whatever reason it was fixed would apply to most custom ROMs and Kernels. I'll actually test this out this weekend and edit my post afterwards.
Edit: I made some calls to friends on PA/Matr1x/Radio .48 and everything seemed fine. I flashed full stock and called back the same people and only one person said they heard a noticeable decrease in the quality. That person also knew I was testing different settings on my phone so maybe they were messing with me.

Bumping an old thread ...
So my gf started complaining that she could barely hear me when I was using my Klipsch S4A headphones to talk--while in the car and in a quiet room. I was on CM10.1 at the time and I had read complaints from others with the same/similar issue on other ROMs, even stock/unrooted. I chalked it up to 4.2 and hoped 4.3 would fix it.
It appears that isn't the case. I just sacrificed root so I could flash a clean install of 4.3 (new bootloader and radio included) hoping it would at least mean I could have normal conversations with my gf again while the devs cook up CM10.2. How bummed am I to find out that the issue persists. I just called her from my office with my headset on and she said I "still sound far away." This is really frustrating. I never had this issue on my GNex.

I wish someone comes up with a solution for this.. I was hoping 4.3 would solve this issue also. Some say its cause of the noise reduction, isn't there anyway we could disable noise reduction?! I remembered I had that option on CM10 my i9300 but not on nexus 4 build.. This is really an issue for me since i always use headset for phone calls.. I was wondering if the original Nexus 4 headset would solve this issue.

Hi guys,
i found 2 "solutions" which didnt work for Nexus 4:
1: typing *#*#3646633#*#* into the phone to enter the engineering mode. "Should" work for all Android, does not for Nexus 4
2: the App "MobileUncle". Does only work for MTK Chipsets (Nexus 4 has another one)
my question: is there something like the Engineering mode for the Nexus 4 ?
Same issue on Nexus 5
FYI, the nexus 5 has the low input volume gain when using 3.5mm headphones with inline mics. I don't understand what LGs problem is with 3.5mm connections or why it was never tested.
started a discussion on in here
Any solution yet???
I have the exact same Issue, Android 4.4.2 and the issue is not fixed weird that only Nexus 4 has it. I am like you trying to find an app or a way to work around the issue, tried to install other ROM using rom manager and phone when SLOW as heck so no idea how to fix it yet, loud speaker to every single call is not the way to go

Extremely low in call volume. Files to edit?

I've been running OmniRom with PA full modular gapps for a while. Currently on 03/05 nightly w/Franco 203.
I use Viper4Android to adjust my headphones and speaker levels.
I have been having extremely low in call volume since 4.4 and I can't figure out why. No one seems to have an issue. I've played with adjustments in Franco's app as well as settings in Viper but it doesn't help. My music sounds great though and voice calls put on speaker are very loud and clear. It's just the handset speaker that's really low.
Previously on my Sensation, I could make edits TPA2051_CFG_XC.csv that would help. And in the Nexus 5 forums I see you can edit mixer_paths.xml to help as well but when I look at the Nexus 4's mixer_path, there isn't a line to adjust handset volume.
Is there a file I could edit to adjust my in call volume? Or any other way to fix this?
Edit: Forgot to include, I use hybrid radio 33-98 for LTE. I've tried other regular and hybrid radios as well and that hasn't helped.
I wonder how helpful this would be for you, but I faced problems with in-call earpiece volume. I had to connect my headphones, call a number, maximize the volume, remove headphones and re-test the volume without headphones. Apparently, I had noticed that it mixed settings of both the profiles - with headphones & without headphones.

Just tried it a few times. No go for me. Volumes for with and w/out headphones are at max. I tried lowering one and the other. Or raising them at different intervals. Still didn't help.
Thanks for trying though.
I actually have the same problem right now. I tired using a flash able zip. Which I have no idea where it is now but all it did was completely disable touch for me. I never tried ViperX but I'll keep snooping around and see what works for me and let you know

Nope. Sorry. I don't think many people are having issues. It might be hardware related but I haven't done a full format to test anything new out.
I update to the newest nightly like once a month and I don't make very many calls so it hasn't been detrimental to me yet.
I haven't seen anyone bring it up in the Omni thread though so I'm certain either a clean start should do the trick or it's hardware related and you'll need an RMA.
Hope you find a resolution for your issue! I'll definitely post something here if I ever figure it out on my end.
Same issue here. Occasionally I've fixed it between kernel or Rom flashing, but never found out what I did to fix and when I'd flash again it would go back to bad quality again. Sometimes I have to stick a finger in one ear and press the phone hard into the other ear to hear anybody

I'm a bit hesitant to flash something for the S3 onto the N4. Plus, the file in that zip you're referring to isn't one that's contained on the N4 in that directory.
Thanks for noting, though. Maybe I'll backup and try it to see.
