Parts of my screen are occasionally disappearing - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Like this picture: http://i46.tinypic.com/2cwreyr.jpg, it only happens on certain apps (like Messaging). Sometimes icons on the status bar disappear and reappear too, is this a hardware or software problem?

If I click on the area that has disappeared or if I click back, it goes back to normal.

still sounds like something is loose. you can always factory reset and try reflashing the stock update, but i dont think that its a software issue.

Erase everything and reflash again, if the problem still persists, then you can be sure it's HW(which is not the case imo) and know what to do.

I'm in the UK. Ordered Nexus 4 on Friday the 15th. Phone arrived on Tuesday. Had this problem straight out of the box (it came with Jelly Bean 4.0). It wasn't resolved by updating to 4.21 or 4.22, or with a reset to factory settings. Phoned up Google just now and RMAed the phone. Bit of a pain given I'm in college accommodation so organising pickup is going to be annoying but not much else I can do. This is the only thread I've been able to find with the problem and the problem is identical on my phone (happens in apps and on the home screen, goes away when I touch the screen).
Edit: Phone was produced in Jan 2013 in Korea if that at all correlates with OP's phone
Edit 2: It seems the gaps in text and apps show up in screenshots. Pretty perplexing considering that suggests software, whilst the updates etc suggest hardware

TouchScreen issue resolved in gingerbread?

So before the gingerbread update i was experiencing the nexus one touch screen issue. This issue would happen mostly when the phone would be charging or warm, and the y coordinate of the touch screen would be off by about an inch. (I would post a link to youtube but i can't yet... new member =/ ) So if you try to answer your phone while the defect was active, you couldnt, because touching the slider would be recognized as trying to touch the 'menu' key on the phone.
Anyway, after gingerbread got pushed to my device, i have yet to experience this issue!! i havent been able to find anyone reporting this resolution. i'm extremely please about this because it was becoming a deal breaker after i missed an important call because i couldnt answer my phone due to the issue!!
anyone else experiencing this resolution!?
In my experiences it does still occur, although seemingly less frequently. It is a hardware problem though so probably won't disappear regardless of the OS

Yup. For some reason I have worse now than before. Maybe I'm just using it more now. Lately it's driving me nuts, to the point of actually looking at a replacement.

this is where I was at before the push, i was seriously considering the incredible s, but for now it seems to have completely disappeared from my device...
I've also heard its a hardware issue (I do believe it to be true, not questioning that), so i found it extremely odd that its not happening now on my device.
Guess I'll just keep my mouth shut and enjoy
Observed no difference. The bug still appears every now and then. Doesn't bother me much because it usually occurs when the phone's charging. Not when I'm on the street using it. I heard that removing any kind of screen protectors can actually solve this problem.

I had it terribly after the GB OTA, I wiped cache & dalvik and it all but went away. One occurrence in a week and a half, and I've been using the crap out of the phone.
Slightly off topic question: On stock Android, is wiping cache the same as wiping the dalvik cache? The stock recovery doesn't have the "wipe dalvik" option, only "wipe cache".
No it's not, but if you have root you can wipe it manually by removing the contents /data/dalvik-cache/

Thanks. But every time you flash an official update, the cache gets wiped and rebuilt though, right? That's why after each update it takes a long time to boot.
I still have the touchscreen issue. i think it will never be solved because it's an hardware issue, not a software one.
So the problem still appears, maybe a little less frequently.
I still have the prob but it's different with 2.3
Before 2.3, the touchscreen problem was unpredictable and could happen at almost anytime, whether charging or not. I replaced the handset but the problem persisted.
Since upgrading to GB, I've noticed a very clear pattern. If I'm charging my device and unplug it before it is fully charged, the touchscreen becomes extremely erratic to the point I must reboot the phone. If it's allowed to charge completely it's okay.
It never happens when it's is not charging.
Still annoying as hell but I've moved to Africa and having the device replaced is a real challenge. So I guess I'm stuck with until I replace it.
Still has issue
Stock, no modification at all. Today when I was rearranging icons in ADW Launcher, it seems that the screen registered click below where my finger actually was, same as the problem I saw previous to updating to 2.3.3. The phone was not hooked to a charger at the time.
Stock GRI40 here on my Nexus One...same issues that i've already had with Froyo. As it was posted before, it's a hardware issue; and the Nexus S is the new kid on Google's block, so i'm not expecting anything to improve our screens.

Theoretically, there is a chance they could fix a software workaround for the hardware problem. If the error happens in only specific circumstances, and ALWAYS happens in those circumstances, then just teach the phone to know when those circumstances are happening, and tell it what to do in those cases. However, I doubt anyone at Google is working too hard on this problem. I agree, it seems to be much less frequent than it ever was. Seems likely that they may have added a little something to help us out.

Or more likely, it could be unintentional.
So even with official OTA it's still here?
Remember me of the ''crazy'' screen problem we had before while charging, perhaps it's a hardware problem after all
This is a main reason why tomorrow i'm getting a new galaxy s.
I tried a lot of custom and stock roms, I sent my phone to HTC and they replaced hardware, but this issue still persist. And it cause me a lot of problems, especially while driving...
I also still get that glitch but not as frequently. I noticed that i didn't need to reboot the phone to fix it. All i need to do is tap the power button to shutoff the screen and then re-tap to turn it back on and it'll show the lock screen. Slide to unlock and the screen is precise once again.
The bug is still there for me also. However, I didn't seem to have it as bad as some did originally, and now I've noticed that it's happening even less frequently.

Strange (repeatable) reboot issue

Not sure if it's just me, but every/any time I try to open up the USA Today app, my phone reboots.
I've tried clearing data, clearing cache, uninstalling/reinstalling and the same thing - click the icon, splash screen, droid animation...
Anybody else?

No problems here - that "do you want alerts?" notification pops up immediately after the splash screen... maybe a coincidence, but worth mentioning... I guess.

I've got the same problem here. Weirdly, it also occurs when I try and use the AP Mobile app. Happens if I'm on wifi or mobile data.
Maybe part of Moto's plan to deny us access to quality news apps?
I came to the boards to see if this random rebooting was just my problem but seems like it is not. My phone has been rebooting for the last 3 nights in a row around the same time, 10pm eastern time. No clue what is causing it.
Also tried the USA Today app and yes it does reboot the phone.
Very strange...
Another issue I have is....my phone screen kinda flickers and starts getting brighter from dimmed screen.
Anyone else gets this?
UPDATE: I just saw this in the general section - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1919581
and I also installed Nova Launcher recently and I feel like that might be the culprit...This is really really strange.

Camera trap with 240fps!

Hi,
The problem here is related to camera, not with my phone, but my cousin's one, whenever he switches to 240 fps video recording, the phone crashes, forcing him to reboot.
As regarding my 6P, I'd never faced such issue. I looked online, and found few people complaining about it, many of them considered replacing the defective unit. *which is difficult in my country*
Does anyone here have any kind of solution for such problem? :crying:

Check Apps
I had same issue.
The reaqson was in LiveWallpaper which crashed device camera.
Another one had this issue because of one static wallpaper.
Check your apps & walppapers. You also may try to turn on Safe Mode to exclude 3rd party apps from loading.

Blurry Icons and Quick Settings/Notifications when swiping

Hi, so I got my Moto G4 about 2 days ago and I noticed today when I was swiping on my home screen from left to right the app Icons release a blurry trail like some sort Motion Blur , and In the Notifications too the Wi-Fi and Cellular toggle leave a blurry trail of the icon when swiping up or down. Is this a software problem? I just Factory reseted my phone and the problem is gone but reapeared later again. I think that it's because I had too many app icons on my home screen (I had only 2 pages)?

Posted there still no solutions thought. I noticed when my phone gets hot the blur is almost gone (It wasn't noticable) What is going on? Also I flashed a older version of the firmware and still had that blur. It got heavy again after I installed like 12 apps and then I updated again to the latest build and still the blur is there.

Try to go to service center.Make sure you have locked the bootloader.
I also have this problem. The support advised me to send the phone to a service center.
For information, this usually occurs when the screen is hot, about 10 minutes of use. Particularly visible when used as GPS (waze or google maps).
This is a hardware problem. Not software, it remains after a quick restart.

Thanks I'll lock the bootloader and go in to the service center and let them check it out. Altrought in EU it doesn't matter if it's unlocked I think but I'll lock it again.

Thanks for the info! For me it's the opposite when my phone is cold (To be exact, the battery when it's at 22,0°C in CPU-Z) the blur is there and really noticable. When I use my phone and the battery hits 35-37°C the blur is almost gone everywhere but an app named "Discord" that has really small text has the blur and it's really noticable. I'll send it and see what they can do.

SM-T500 Apps / Games flashing black when running

Hi all,
Just like to check as i am at a loss on what to do. I got my Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 10.4" SM-T500 last month. Generally it was ok except that samsung browser will hang when the tablet goes into deep sleep and it will take mins for it to 'catch up' meaning i cannot turn off the tablet or launch applications during that time. Youtube app sometimes will sometimes randomly close.
However in early dec, after a samsung software update, games and some apps started flashing black for 5 seconds and perhaps about 2 seconds of the app /game screen shown. It has not gone into sleep or anything as if the game / app appears on the screen you can still click on items and all. Restarting the tablet or factory reset did not help. Youtube app will still randomly close.
Already sent in to samsung service centre and they tell me they have reflashed the latest firmware.. however above problems remain. I asked customer support and they told me that at this point to wait for a new samsung update or app update which may solve the following issue. but thats going to take a while before an update comes from their tablet
Wonder is there anything i can do ?
Thank you.

This is happening to me since the latest update as well.
I wouldn't stress about too much. Updates have been coming pretty regular so just wait for an update. They've updated the tablet about 3 times since I bought it so I feel they'll have this fixed soon.
Nothing I've done fixed it so I'm just waiting for an update.

Yes, I thought that solved it but you're right, turning off auto rotate didn't actually help.
I haven't gotten any new updates since version T500XXU2ATK3.
What version are you on?
I'm pretty confident a factory reset won't solve this problem. I'm happy I'm not the only one experiencing this. Hopefully an update will fix it soon.
My version is now T500XXS2ATL1, security patch level is 1 December 2020
You are right, the factory reset didnt do anything at all. It made it worst!! even at the home screen it will just keep flashing. I gave up and went back to the service centre and told them to do something as i could not work on it. They changed the motherboard and it seems ok for now. Stil testing it but problem seems to have gone away.
Suggest if yours is under warranty to do the same too!

Any update on your experience?
Just wanted to update that I solved this problem for myself by downgrading to firmware version T500XXU2ATJ6 which had a November 2020 build/release date (with Sept 2020 security patch unfortunately). I'm happy now though. Confirmed fully working after using for over a week.
Hmm after the hardware change, the tablet works as it should. I am still on the T500XXS2ATL1 firmware.
Interesting. Someone else on the Samsung forums had a similar issue and firmware downgrade solved his issue.
When a firmware newer than ATL1 comes out I'll try it.
Also, doubt this tablet will get Android 11 before May/June.
hmm wondering if there is anything different in our tablets (mobo chips /memory / etc) which made it behave so drastically with this firmeware update. And with a hardware change it seems to work better? hmmm wondering wondering.
I still have one small issue where every now and then unlocking the screen you may not be able to access any icons, i will need to lock the screen again and drag on camera/browser before i am able to use the tablet. This happened out of the box as well but didnt think much of it then.

That's exactly what I'm wondering. Some minor component difference on the mobo having compatibility issues with the different firmwares.
Kinda sounds like a touchscreen issue you're having. Hopefully it won't get unbearably bad for you.
