Ubuntu for Tablet Announced - Kindle Fire General

"The tablet-orientated version of Ubuntu is based on Ubuntu Touch – the same version used on Ubuntu Phones – so is gesture-heavy in use.
Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 owners will be able to download and ‘flash’ Ubuntu Touch onto their devices this coming Thursday.
But despite last-minute speculation no hardware partners intending to pre-install the device have been announced."

We should port this....

Honestly I don't see it happening. The requirements need at least 1g of ram. We have 512mb and it just not powerful enough. But when I get a new computer next week ill look at it

Right, in fact I think the official numbers state 2GB of RAM as being the minimum.
The KF has a Dual-core A9 cpu, where a A15 is required.
And the KF only supports 2-finger multi-touch (I doubt this is a deal-breaker).
Min Requirements:
• Dual-core Cortex A15 CPU
• 2GB memory preferred
• 8GB flash storage minimum
• 7"-10" screen size
• 4-fingers multi-touch
Click to collapse
All that said, it should be possible to get it running. I mean, I've seen Ubuntu Desktop running on the KF to some degree - so I'm betting someone will get ithis to boot eventually.

The Kindle can already run Debian, so why not.

If you read the above post. Read the Minimum specifications. We fill 1 of 5.

Minimum specs are for losers... What's the worst that could happen, it has a slight hiccup?

Worse that can happen: flash it and it sets off everyone if North Koreas nuclear missiles to your IP

Sent from a bird... No, a plane... Wait, It's a Kindle Fire!

I actually don't think the kindle fire will be getting the Tablet version, it looks like the Tablet version is only for 10in tablets. We would be getting a a larger phone (phablet) like the nexus 7 got

I tried it out on my Acer A-500 yesterday , man you need alot of space compared to Android , Im not sure if the kindle has the memory available!

I might have to try it out soon.

In the development section, Hash code has a build up and kits surprising good. I didn't think it would be so smooth. I'm defiantly going to use it more once its out of Alpha and Canonical gets more features into it

Samsung unveils Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0), offers Ice Cream Sandwich on a seven-inch platter
It looks like Samsung has just taken the wraps off its latest tablet offerings, with the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) -- an ICS-laced follow-up to the company's original seven-incher. Available in both 3G and WiFi varieties, this redux doesn't mark a huge departure from its predecessor, packing a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and a 1024 x 600 LCD. The big changes, however, come in the software department, with the Galaxy Tab 2 shipping with Android 4.0 straight out of the box. Other than that, you'll find a three-megapixel rear-facing camera, a VGA shooter up front, Bluetooth capabilities, and HSPA+ connectivity. No word yet on pricing or availability, but it's worth noting that we first saw this announcement hit Samsung's RSS feed earlier this morning, and it appears to have been pulled since then. It all looks awfully official to us, but when it becomes officially official, we'll be sure to update this post accordingly. Until then, be sure to head past the break for a shot of its backside.

Really, ohhh come on Samsung why are you doing this, this is an inferior model compared to the galaxy 7.7 the only thing it has going for is ICS which the 7.7 doesn't at the moment. This is why Samsung is playing catch-up to Apple even though I deeply believe that the tabs are supperior but churning all these different models for what? Just concentrate on one single model and make it the best device available.

I know but there is no Tab 3 section
Just curious. I saw that they recently released the Tab 3. What does it have over the Tab 2 besides a home button? Specs seem almost the same.
The main differences between the two are the processor 1.2Ghz and the 1.3 megapixel camera. It also has a nice alluminum bezel, micro usb port and the home button. Other than that not much difference.
Sent from my SM-T210R using XDA Premium HD app
yep, they dropped the funky charger, micro usb port like you said and the entire body is less wide--my screen protector from the tab 2 hangs off on both sides.
looking forward to a new section!!
Tab 3 7.0 rootable yet?
Do people able to root the device yet? Can we use the same method as the tab 2 7 ? Will it brick or anything?
Unless you see a specific root instruction for your device, do not try anything.
No matter how similar tab2 and tab3 are, they are different devices. Just wait for the new section for your device to be created.
Stop bringing your questions here, cuz we can't answer them. We all have tab2. How would we know?
There are probably dedicated threads for nexus 7.2 but nothing for our tab 3 yet. My 8 will be delivered tomorrow. Can't wait to root and debloat.

Im curious. Those of you who purchased the Tab3 7 inch. Are you upgrading from another 7 inch tab? What tab is this one replacing?
I am upgrading from the tab 2 7 inch just because they were out of stock on a return. wish I hadn't the tab 3 is no big difference, the stock rom is bloated and yes, the internet gets dropped when idle for me too.
I got the 8". Replacing a 1st gen Kindle Fire - tired of being restricted to the Amazon App Store etc (and rooting of course takes away the instant video and free kindle book prime benefits) . Also have the Galaxy S Blaze phone and very happy with it which led me to the Tab 3. 8" is a really nice size for use as an e-reader.
On both the Tab 3 and my S Blaze, I had trouble keeping WiFi connection when connected to my N router (I run one G and one N b/c I don't have a dual-band that will maintain the N speed and we still have some G only devices). They stay connected to the G (Linksys) with no problem. Never investigated further as it doesn't make enough difference for me to care. Something to think about.

[Q] Wait for the next generation Kindle Fire HD or get the Nexus 7 (2013)?

Hi guys!
So I was wondering, the 2013 Nexus 7 model was recently released & it does pack in a lot of specs since it's new. I was thinking of going for it then I was wondering whether to wait for next KFHD. I've been reading rumours, it looks like overpasses the N7 in benchmarks and also will have much better/newer hardware (for instance, Snapdragon 800 CPU).
What do you guys think? Should I go for the Nexus right now or wait at least until the new Kindle gets announced? I reckon CyanogenMOD would be available later, so software ain't a problem.

I would assume we will get the update, but no idea when. But when you compare to other devices, nothing much outside of the Nvidia Shield Tab, and Nexus devices, have officially gotten their update and even more delays are probably caused from the buggnyness of 5.0.0 vs 5.0.2, so waiting to release updates is sort of in the best interest of all OEM's at the moment.
Patience and hell, the stock KK still is pretty good on my note. Sure it has the touchscreen issue opening with the cover but a quick on/off fixes that right up and everything runs great on it.

Maybe, but really it is a super minor issue that could even be chalked up to the screen cover tech or pen input tech itself. Really I would rather the screen cover not turn on the screen and I just hit the button either way.
On a gaming note, if you like Tanks, or play World of Tanks on PC or X360, you need to check out WoT Blitz on the this tab, it looks and works great.

There won't ever be any custom roms because Nvidia's source code and GIThub are a mess, and everyone who's tried to do it has ended up running into a wall at some point. There's a custom kernel, but when I tried it my tab became very stuttery, and overclocking seemed to have no effect on gaming performance... it just ruined the battery life.
