I did a full backup using cwm.
When I recover the backup, do I get everthing back, my apps and settings..?
Is it just like restoring a pc disk image..? Or do I need to use another backup to get apps and settings. Thanks

cwm backs up everything if you do a FULL backup

It does not backup /data/media folder.
You should also delete .android_secure.img from your backup set or a full restore will fail before it restores flexrom.

How does everyone back up they're apps, photos, etc. I wanna flash a custom ROM but I have everything setup on stock ROM so its holding me back

How to backup:
- when not rooted:
photos, etc.: connect your Nexus 7 to a PC and copy the files to your PC
apps: use a backup app like "App backup & restore" from play store or "titanium backup"
you cannot backup the settings for each app, like your progress in a game. :crying:

I use Titanium Backup so I can always restore to whatever state I want independant of the (custom) ROM I'm using
but Titanium backup isn't the only tool that can do this, ROM Toolbox (Pro) can also do this.
Anyway, having a custom recovery is essential if you want to install custom ROMs, and to install a custom recovery
you need to be rooted ! (I use TWRP recovery on my Nexus 7 btw.)

^^ what peter said, might I recommend getting titanium backup pro if you get the flashing bug, the extra features help a lot.

I recommend titanium backup to backup apps. Everything else is app dependent... I usually backup launcher layout. These backups are stored on your sdcard which is not wiped when flashing so no need to backup to the PC. Also make a nandroid in recovery in case you need a restore point or you don't like your new ROM.

No. There is a partition on the N7 called "sdcard" which is just your internal storage, an emulated SD card if you will. It will only wipe the data, cache, dalvik, and system partitions which leave your data unharmed.

Unless you still have a locked bootloader, in which case everything will be wiped. Err... right?

And then Just to clean applications through google play reinstall. A good way to do it remote from your computer. hence i see how important are the application I previously had.
I used to use titanium backup, Now I use MYbackup Pro. Very simple to setup and use. But still does everything that most people would need.
Another level of backup I use is Applist Backup. It creates a file list of your apps on your sdcard. If you need to restore it links to the play store. I don't use it on the N7, but I do on my phone. If nothing else I don't have to try to remember what apps I have installed.
Personally I never back up data. It's sync'd with Google or the app has its own backup routine.

Has anyone backed up apps on 4.2.1, with a second user?
I am on stock rooted 4.2.1 and have my own user profile (with apps/widgets/settings) and also the wifes on another user profile. We both use our own google user details (for play store etc), does each user have to do a separate back up? I've used titanium before but just wondering how it works with more than one user, as I believe titanium now supports 4.2+, but chainfire SU root currently only works on the 'owner' user profile.

After you backup in titanium backup its always a good idea to create a backup zip and save it to Dropbox /Box/Google Drive or whatever cloudy storage you use just in case

Titanium backup works awesome for backups if you have root,if not then you will have to do a directory crawl with a pc and back up that way.

i upgraded my rom (paranoid android) and it has android 4.2 on it. but with multiuser support, the sd card contents got redirected somewhere else, but it didnt take my files with it. so now none of my apps see my files. i need to know how to get them into a readable place.
You should have done a backup with titanium before installing the new rom,then you could have reinstalled titanium and restored appa and data.The multiuser file system is a pita,install your apps from playstore and then find the directories they hold their data and transfer it manually.Time consuming but unless you have a nandroid of you 4.1 that you could install to do a titanium backup on thats the way to go.

I made a nandroid already. My apps aren't the problem. I only need to get to my old sd card contents. That has my app backups from rom toolbox.
So you need to move your rom toolbox backup from your old sd to your new backup location so it can restore?
You will have to use a file manager or pc to copy paste from old location to the new one ,finding the new one might be a pain but I believe the old one should be sdcard/romtoolbox folder.

I figured out where everything was. My old sd card stuff was under "mnt/shell/emulated" while the new sd card was under "/sdcard". kind of a pain trying to find it.

I made a backup in CWM. When I connect my N7 to a PC, I see every other folder except my backup folder. (I am showing hidden files/folders). Is it not possible to move CWM backups off of the N7?
Great now the backup isn't there and I have no space left. (Have the 8GB N7)

It is stored in /data/media/0/clockworkmod now. I think it ran out of room while backing up and didn't tell me. I couldn't find out what was eating up the space so I just had to wipe it.
You run out of space quickly with 8 GB. I've had an iPod touch 4g before I chose android. It was the 8 GB model. When ordering my nexus 7 I directly chose the 32 GB one..

So I have heard... Even after a fresh SlimBean install I still have 2.3GB eaten up by who knows what...
Koush is working on a version which enables you to store / restore the backup files directly on your PC.
Otherwise you can use backup tools like my A.R.T. which enables you to do the same either in recovery mode or while the system is running.

What do you want to backup and what do you want to use it for?
If you just want to create a backup so you can restore your complete phone you can create a nandroid backup with e.g. custom recovery TWRP.
If you want to backup some apps+data and e.g. settings you can use Titantium backup. It can backup/restore settings and apps including data one by one or batch.
Both above methods store the files on the simulated sd-card. If you cannot copy them with USB connection you can use AirDroid or something.
