[Q] Poor GPS Connection - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I bought my Nexus 7 about a month ago. It works perfectly apart from the GPS. It can get a signal fast enough when I'm outside, but if I'm in my car it will get the signal will stationary, but once I start to move it loses connection and I have to come to a stop for a while to regain signal.
I downloaded the GPS Status app and looking at the number of satellites I have about 8/8, once I start moving it drops to 0/2 sometimes 0/0.
Should I take this back under warranty?
Thanks
Nick

I dont have this problem. Try latest update 4.2.2 and see if there is still problem. Also download FasterGPS (if you are rooted) and select your country. If not just replace it with new one.

I have already updated it. And it not rooted, guess I'll take it back.
Thanks for your help

Sort of depends - on a number of things
- # of satellites above the horizon
- clear Brillioun zone (no trees etc)
- sitting inside of heavy buildings or metallic enclosures (like autos)
Metallic cabs on vehicles have a way of making signals that are already at -155 dB in free space that much more wonky once you climb inside them. But if you have other consumer/commodity GPS units (e.g. a smartphone) that can maintain a good lock very well in the same vehicle, then perhaps it could be a hardware problem.
All these phones - Android / Apple / whatever - seem to come out of the chute with widely varying reception sensitivity floor (btw, there is no "connection", the GPS chip only listens). The original Samsung Galaxy was pitiful - it could barely maintain a lock with a clear sky and an unobstructed horizon - sitting side by side with other phones that worked perfectly. Never mind getting in a vehicle and moving - a lock condition was nearly impossible in that case.
The origins of the problem can be a poor gps reciever front-end, or more likely antenna design - possibly even interference from the tab itself (in the form of IF mixer spurs that land in the GPS band). Hmmm interesting - Asus is not exactly a cellphone design company - if your unit is a tilapia (3G) N7, does the problem change if you put it in Airplane Mode?
If it affects only a single unit, look for a loose connector for the external GPS antenna. There is a thread here on XDA in the N7 forums somewhere - search for that.
I took mine out for a drive with a different Android device right now - no speeds in excess of 30 mph, but they both seemed to hold lock with roughly the same error estimates. Unfortunately for the test, there were 10 satellites up, so maybe that test means nothing for when there are only 5 or 6 visible.
I doubt I'll be using my GPS much in a vehicle as it is WiFi-only (I suppose I could tether, but none of that seems like something I should be doing while I am driving It seems to lock pretty easily indoors, but that is not the problem you are experiencing.
(I vaguely recall that some of those Galaxy S users were trying to tweak GSP configuration files so that their devices would accept poorer lock conditions. I'm not sure if something equivalent is easy to do for the N7)
hope that helps - it's not a fix for you but at least a little more info.

I just tried it again outside alongside my nexus 4. My nexus 7 (which is 32gb without 3g) would only find at most 5 satellites and even then it would keep losing lock. My nexus 4 on the other hand would find about 17 satellites and have a lock on at least 9 of them. I then moved inside and my nexus 4 maintained a lock on most of the satellites whereas the nexus 7 lost all.
I think it is faulty in some way.
Thanks for your help

Should I give up on i9000? GPS will NEVER work! Can't we sue them or get a recall?

I actually need gps quite a bit in my line of work. I bought this phone because of it. But, it just does not work. Some claim it works fine, but at the same time they are saying they get 5-10m lock! (thats off by 30ft!) With a borrowed motorola atrix i was getting 4.9 feet accuracy (thats like accurate by 2 steps!). I think I have come to the conslusion that it will never work, and samsuck doesn't even care! Why else would they keep releasing newer phones with the exact same problems? I'm gonna jump ship...everything else about this phone is awesome. Any ideas if HTC has good gps/reception? I am thinking about the incredible S. (and i'm not a troll, I have lived with this phone's gps issues for almost 1 year now).
Get a real GPS receiver, and don't expect it will be cheap if you want a real 4.9ft accuracy.
and for i9000 is about 15ft~30ft accuracy, quite good when compare to my garmin unit.
Samsung should get sued for that piece of hardware ****... but the i9000 is still the best phone
You should try Darkys 10.1 with Darky Core and JVO Modem. GPS works okay but no perfectly !
i do like this:
android market : gps toolbox , in settings has 2 options - download agps satelites and reset gps
1st i download the satelites data
2nd i reset gps
and after closing this app , i open my gps soft and it works , i use iGO
Why do i always hear people with problems my gps works fine since day one. even on the old roms. only with these newer ones i get real fast lock.
never had any problem with navigation software and driving my car
i a using sygic mobile maps because i dont wanna waste data with google maps.
And if your unit performs worse than everyone else's SGS, then you might consider bending the contacts that connect the GPS antenna inside. Seems they don't make good contact on many units.
There is a thread about it somewhere.

Garbled meaning induced by swype when posting from XDA app on SGS I9000.
at the beginning gps was not very good but after android 2.2 and newer fw gps is totally fine for me. outside and in car it works very good. btw data network is activated for me and it helps for faster fix...
I gave up on the Internal GPS after a few Months.
Purchased an External Bluetooth GPS Receiver and now have accuracy to around 5 meters at times.
Also easier as the GPS Receiver can be turned on the get Satellite lock then connected to the Phone.
GPS on JVO ROM is all you can get. It's not enough to lead you driving on a city. GPS antenna is too small, does not update position often enough, keeps using guessing instead of real GPS position (your previous speed is used to calculate the supposed position, something very bad when you're turning around many times).
It's good enough to use it walking outside the city (main reason for me), or in highways (smooth curves and slow change of direction), but the GPS on the Galaxy S is real ****. Worst than the one in my previous two phones, and worst than the one in many current phones.
I really don't understand why having a phone that big we keep having to deal with so much unuseful plastic. 1.5 cm above an below the screen. Just make the phone the same size as the screen. The speaker can go in the top, like in many Motorola models. The battery could be bigger. If they have to make an GPS antenna that's 5 cm long, make it, running along one side.
It's like the phone hanging after a call. I would not advise this device for anyone depending of his phone to receive critical calls at any time. This **** just hangs radomly and you have to force a reboot.
Just to let people know that I've spent all afternoon trying 3 different ROMS, 2 times each, and the GPS sensivity is better on XXJVO.
I flashed the deodexed versions from Ramad, and used GPS status app to test. Just flash the ROM, install GPS status, see how many satellites it detects.
JVJV9 and XXJVP detect 1 or less while on my desk
XXJVO detects 4 and gets a fix, and sometimes it mantains the fix
Next to a window, JVJV9 and XXJVP detect 5 or 6 satellites, get a fix but lose it, most of the time 0 satellites in green.
XXJVO detects 8 satellites, 7 in green all the time
Accounting for the fact that satellite positions change between one test and another, I repeated tests twice.
I tried XXJVP on the field last weekend and was unable to get a fix while on the car.
Phone is sitting now on my desk, and has 4 satellites in green and intermitent fix. Much better than the other ROMs that see 0 or 1 satellites sitting on the same spot.

Gmaps 5.x and above has cache option...I'm finding very useful. Plus offline navigation should be coming this summer
Personally, I've given up on the GPS.. Samsung should honestly be sued, but it is too expensive to do so.
It has gotten better with newer ROM's, but, the sensitivity still appears to be a joke compared to my years old garmin forerunner. It may be good enough for some people who use it for navigation (because, I'd imagine there are plenty of algorithms which can probably be employed). However, the track quality produced seems semi-laughable, and the GPS appears to be nowhere near the quality of a dedicated unit.
People also need to stop checking programs like "gps status". They don't tell you if the location is correct (because it wont show you on the maps). So the accuracy value means nothing (the accuracy value means nothing without RAIM/FDE anyway regardless of unit).
GPS doesn't work at all on my SGS.
I tried that 'push the upper part of the rubberplastic thingy' trick, no result.
Whenever I try to find my location in Google maps, it can only find the WIFI center about 1km away from here. I think that's thanks to the Use Wireless Networks setting. but the GPS in my own SGS has never ever succeeded in locking any satelites.
Must be a hardware fauly I guess?
I bought it in October IIRC.
I don't mind though, never had the need to use GPS.
But it just bothers me that I got a somewhat malfunctioning device.
No big deal though!
Its been working fine on mine.. The only time i had issues was with 2.2/2.2.1

Some data points:
The signal to noise levels reported by the test tools seem reasonable.
All GPS systems use averaging to get a lock.
All GPS systems use Kalman filtering, which filters and connects location and speed, to make the system work at all. The stronger the filter, the more stable the position. But this gives bigger problems in turns.
Dedicated receivers have a much bigger antenna and thus need less averaging to get a stable position.
Receiver software has 'modes' - for example walking and driving mode. In driving mode, movements at low speeds are suppressed.
GPS is still a work in progress; there must be a reason Samsung renamed LBStestMode into AngryGPS!

GPS signal lost

Hi all,
I'm on 4.4.2 (Singapore NC2) and I keep losing my GPS signal. No different from any of the other 4.4.2 ROMs I tried (all stock Samsung, initially not rooted but now I am)
I've tried:
- Turn off data (as someone suggested the Note 3 loses GPS when data changes from HSPA to 4G and back)
- rebooted
- Shut down the phone, take battery out and wait a few minutes before rebooting
- cleared the cache
- all sorts of location modes
, turned off wireless and bluetooth
- installed gps status and toolbox (another suggestion)
- full wipe and reinstall all apps
Things I have not tried
- wipe again (but I don't want to keep wiping to get GPS working)
- break the piece of sh1t in half
Is there any way to make this pile of [email protected] work. This is seriously THE worst GPS I had since the original Galaxy S (the S1).
I could not honestly say whether it was any better or worse before the upgrade as I got it two weeks ago and immediately upgraded to 4.4.2
Somehow, after I upgraded to NC2 it was fine but this afternoon it was absolute hell and took all the self control I had NOT to open the window and throw the POS out.
Any suggestions would be greatly(!) appreciated.
TIA

to be frank, wifi/data/blututh has nothing to do with the GPS. Mine is working well, has never disconnected when I needed (especially when I m driving)
have u tried to test ur gps ? u can use gps test to see how fast it is to lock a satelite, how many satelite detected, how strong is ur gps signal.
then you will know whether your gps got problem or not.
By any chance ur using aluminum casing? With it NFC won't work and very weak GPS signals.

Thanks, I know none of these should matter when it comes GPS except data and obviously the phone can scan for Wi-Fi networks to get an initial position.
When the phone gets a lock it usually does so within seconds and I've compared signal strength with an S4 and it's give or take the same.
Still, the Note lost the signal without moving, got it back only to lose it again and so on......absolute nightmare trying to navigate with it. I'll check it again today.
I have no case on it, it just sits in a Brodit holder.
It seems ok this morning.....I'll just keep an eye on it.
EDIT: Was OK for most of the morning while driving. However, this afternoon, after some playing some games, I took it for a drive again and GPS went all ballistic. I wonder whether it's a heat problem. I have another Note 3, also KitKat but different version, not rooted and when I put them both next to each other on a table they both intermittently lost GPS without being moved around....very strange.
Never had this issue... Mine only looses signal when i'm in a parking garage, on the tube or in between several high concrete buildings. But that's elementary physics, not a hardware defect.
Have you tried another GPS app?

Thanks, I've tried a few including GPS testing apps. Are you on 4.3 or 4.4.2?
I've also had the two Note 3, a SGS3 and Note 10.1 (2014 LTE so also Snapdragon 800) next to each other on a table outside. The SGS showed a rather consistent view of 6 to 7 satellites while the Notes (all three) had their satellite readings go up and down. However, ONLY the Note 3s lost the signal. It looks something like this: Has 8 to 10 sats in view, suddenly drops four, then another 3, then it's dead and then it seems to restart......and it's good again. This is all without the phones/tablet being moved or touched.
Mine does it as well rooted and before unrooted! Could be hardware although it's not as bad on Google maps more on waze!

4.4.2, NB7.
I'll test. Note that I'm inside a newly build concrete building between several servers and computers, and below 7 floors filled with people. (It's a hotel.)
Start: 22 in view.
10 sec: In use: 6. Accuracy: 60 meters
25 sec: In use: 9, Accuracy: 10 meters.
MapsWithMe and Google maps drop me in the wrong part of the building, but the readings remain consistent after it has sucessfully located me. Even when I'm walking down the hall it accuratelly follows me without skipping.
(It still thinks I'm doing it in the wrong part of the complex, but no connection is lost. Could be worse, most apps' locationservices still think I'm somewhere in the arse-end of nowhere in Eastern Europe. Dear Phone, I've seen enough of Serbia to say I wasn't impressed. I have no intention to stay. )
Mobile data on/off makes no difference, WiFi is off.
Is it relevant to mention that I'm in western Europe? Might be, for the number of sats.

Thanks for the test. I've been on NB7 (BTU). THis is when I first noticed the problem, the day after I got the Note 3.
All I can say is that it's fine again now. Something triggers the problem and once it's messed up it stays that way until I shut the phone down AND take the battery out for half a minute or so. A simple shut down and restart after a few seconds does not seem to help.
No clue whether this is related to there not being an Australian 4.4.2 ROM although I would have though Singapore would be close enough.....geographically.
I'm indoors at the moment and it has 13 satellites in use with 36ft (about 10m) accuracy and has been stable for the last 15 minutes. When it's screwed then I don't get a lock for longer than a minute or two. I'll just keep playing with it and if I can't fix it at all it's going to a better place
Thanks
I have the same problem. I'm on 3uk network and have to have a booster box for my phone at home as there is no network coverage on any network where I live but sometimes lose signal even with this. With friends, on same network, they have a perfect signal on their phones, none have the Galaxy Note 3 except me and I have have zilch. I didn't have any problems when I first got my phone but approx 9-10 mths later Gps signal totally unreliable. 3 told me the handset would have to be sent back to Samsung but this means I have to be without for, well who knows how long...
I have tried all the same remedies as you, none work. If you come up with any solution PLEASE post it here. thanks.

4.4.2 GPS bug

Hi All,
I've got ongoing GPS problems with my Note 3 on 4.4.2 (various stock versions and CM11):
The GPS works fine for most of the day but EVERY day between (roughly) 15:00 and 19:00 Sydney time (worst between 16:00 and 18:00) it constantly loses the GPS signal......again and again and again with two three minutes in between. Then, in the evening, it works just fine again.
Initially I thought this was a hardware fault but I have since seen two other Note 3 on 4.4.2 doing exactly the same thing. It's only at those times, surely this is some sort of software bug.
I have attached some screenshots that show this in the 'GPS Test' app.
Basically I have a full signal, then all the satellites below 60 or so disappear then they're all gone and GPS starts from scratch. After 19:00 everything is back to normal.
Anyone else in Sydney on 4.4.2 who could give this a try at those times. You'll need an app like GPS test to see this.
Obviously I can't take this to Samsung Australia as they'll just pin it on the non-Australian ROM. Hopefully they'll have 4.4.2 by the time the Note 4 is released
I've bought Ultra GPS logging to run a continuous log over the next few days which I'll attach once it's done.
TIA
If it's consistent every day at the same time, it's more likely to be an external issue. Looks to me like they're all out of range at that time.
GPS satelites have their own orbit, they are not in a fixed position overhead. There are quite a significant few areas on the planet where at fixed times there is no signal whatsoever.

Thanks but they are definitely not out of range. These screenshots were taken while the phone was pretty much stationary, with clear view of the sky. The signal isn't going to get much better on a Note 3. When I first noticed I was in the car and supected something related but this has been going on for a few weeks now and the only thing consistent is the time of day. This happens everywhere: In the car, at home, in the park...wherever.
I'll try to disable the mobile network time sync. Who knows, maybe that makes a difference. Of course I'll only know after 17:00 tomorrow

Mate, there is a possibility the satellites are out of range, has no relation to how clear the sky is. If the satellite is over another part of Oz, or the world, you aren't going to get a signal from it.... No GPS satellite signal = No GPS...
The pictures you display show this - in top left corner, how many satellites in view (you need a minimum of 3 with decent signal to triangulate your position)... And remember, around high rise buildings the signal isn't so accurate due to reflection off buildings...
Disabling network time sync will make it harder to find the satellites as the Note 3 downloads the satellite position for a faster lock...
Same problem here.
Hi.
I have almost the same problem, so I installed "GPS Status" from the Play Store.

The satellites were not out of sight. A Note 10.1 2014 next to the two Note 3 had no such problem when stationary on a table outside.
Besides, how would ALL satellites disappear from view at the same time without going inside or driving into a tunnel?

It seems that is what's already happening. It's just hard to navigate when the connection is constantly being reset.

I've only disabled the time sync, not the data connection. That said, made no real difference, could have been a bit better but most likely I'm just imagining that I still had some dropouts this afternoon where I should have had none. This morning everything was perfect as usual.
I've gone through two new Note 3 with GPS issues now. It just turn itself on/off whenever. Not all day is the same and some days you cannot get a constant GPS signal at all. The only solution I've found is to reset the GPS but on really bad days the GPS doesn't even last 1min. It's really bad. I've taken it to the ATT store and spoken with techs online and no one has an answer for this. I'm thinking of switching back to my Note 2 or trying for a 4rd Note 3 replacement if they allow it.
I have minimal apps on my phone so there's nothing else running in the background except for the normal services. Many believe it may be other apps but this isn't the case with me. It's very annoying and more so because I am new to this area and gotten lost several times because the GPS misreports on Google Maps.
If anyone has a good solution besides resetting please let me know. Thanks.

Alright, on the phone with ATT and it appears Samsung has now acknowledged that some phones do have a faulty GPS. The note did not state whether it was a hardware or software issue but it does state they they have no fix for it. The rep was even surprise to see the note from Samsung. ATT will refuse to replace the phone because it is Samsungs fault. I feel like I've been scammed. This is my 3rd Note3 with the same GPS issue. Actually, now that the phone just updated (this morning) the GPS can't even connect. Utter ridiculous. So pissed.
I've been keeping and eye on mine after updating to ND5. Yesterday was fine even after 16:00 HOWEVER, I found that it's now playing up earlier in the day. Today I lost signal at least ten times in 30 minutes while driving between 14:00 and 14:30......It would be nice if Samsung did something about this but when did they every :-|
You know about GPS jammers ?
Some commercial drivers make use of a GPS Jammer to prevent all the stuff in the cab from correctly recording how many miles they travel. The law states that they have to take a break every so many miles. If the equipment cannot record the GPS mileage, then the law cannot be enforced. So they jam the signal.
Just a possibility to consider. Maybe you can go somewhere isolated and test it at the usual times and see if it works when you can be pretty certain that no jammers are near.

Thanks, but this happens regardless of location, including a soccer field, our street, out home, my car an ALL sorts of roads. I'm sure there is some bug in either the software or the chip itself. Needless to say Samsung would not recognize either even if that was the case.
Hey mate, sorry for reviving an older thread, but I can pretty much confirm the issue is not just you, because I'm having the exact same problem.
I got impatient waiting for Samsung to push 4.4 to Australia, so I forced a 4.4 stock firmware using Odin. Ever since I've had problems with GPS dropping out. Lions like it's an issue with the Note 3 and 4.4, because my Galaxy S4 on 4.4 is perfect.
I thought I could roll back to 4.3, but turns out that's not paddle. Looks like we might be stuck with this issue until Samsung push the update here legit. I'm a field service technician, and it kinds sucks when you have to rely on GPS to get around and it doesn't work properly.
But is not australia upside down?

https://www.amazon.com/Corehan-Android-Double-Bluetooth-Navigation/dp/B01G3LE5R8
The GPS worked great for about 5 days then progressively got worse. Now it doesn't work at all. I tried resetting AGPS but to no avail. Waze stopped working so I installed Google Maps. That worked right away then stopped working 30 minutes later. ( NO GPS signal)
With Waze if I uninstall Waze and reinstall it it works great for about ten minutes then starts to lose GPS signal.
I have 3 GPS test apps installed as well and they can all locate 3-6 satellites but none can get a location lock anymore. Could this be a symptom of a bad GPS antenna?
Is this a typical issue with these Chinese head units? I am tearing my hair out trying to figure out whats wrong. It seems like a software issue since it works immediately if I uninstall an app and reinstall it. (or that is just a crazy coincidence)
I also can run Waze on my phone right next to the head unit and it will work flawlessly.
Not sure how to troubleshoot or fix this. Any ideas?
First thing you can do, is check the location of the GPS antenna. Try putting it up on top of your dashboard (just for testing). Also check that the gps wire is connected to the head unit firmly. If that doesn't make it work adequately, return it.

this makes no sense if it was working correctly for days then progressively has gotten worse. Not to mention I already said it can locate 3-6 satellites (out of 12 or more shown on the radar) but doesn't get a location lock.

Has the weather gotten worse over a few days (yep, even WEATHER can impact satellite reception -- ever try watching satellite TV in a thunderstorm?)? Has the antenna MOVED during that time (which can happen if you hide it under your dashboard and it slips around)? There are a lot of reasons why reception can get worse over time. And you need more than just to "see" some satellites to lock onto a location. They have to be HEARD, CLEARLY.
So like I said, YOUR FIRST STEP has to be to reposition the antenna such that it has OPTIMAL reception.

weather is fine. Antenna is firmly mounted with velcro to where the factory antenna would have been. It is in the optimal position, as I said it has no problem reading multiple satellites, just can't get a location lock.
upgrade ??
I bought this one last year http :// cdun-zzh-an-01.strikingly. com
And I was wondering if there is a way to upgrade to android 6 or 7.
Do you know something about it?

GPS fix

My phone takes a lot of time getting a GPS fix, sometimes it doesn't succeed after minutes of waiting. I compared it to some Samsung phones, those connect within seconds...
The connection seems stable after getting a fix, but getting a fix is very hard for this phone...
Is anyone else experiencing this?
You're not the only one, mine's also broken. Looking around at the official Moto forums, it seems like this is a fairly common issue with the G4 Play.
So far stock was broken, CM 14.1 has been no better. If I use GPS Status & Toolbox it will eventually get a lock and maybe the accuracy will get down to +/-30m, but if any other app that calls for location (Google Maps, Pokemon Go, etc), if the GPS is turned on at all, it will almost never lock unless switch to GPS Status, but once it gets a lock, the accuracy will keep dropping till its greater than +/-300-400m before losing the lock and eventually the phone just shuts down GPS and stops trying. Literally not location or app settings make any difference, neither does factory reset.
I've had 2 G4 Plays so far. The first was the Amazon Prime version, it had no location issues at all and was totally rock solid, but boot loader could not be unlocked, so I sold it to a friend for his kids to use for Pokemon Go since it was a great device for that. This second one may as well not have came with GPS.
Edit: I've returned to stock and zero difference. I'm not messing with this anymore, 2.5 weeks was long enough trying to fix it, I'm replacing it through Amazon.
I was heaving issues too, changed my SIM to the second slot and it's quite better now. I even play PoGo.
Sent from my Moto G Play using XDA-Developers Legacy app
The problem is actually quite simple: The G4 Play cannot connect to Russian satellites (GLONASS). Under GPS Status and a few other apps, they are perma-greyed out. All of my LG phones connect to them just fine. What kills me is that the feature is listed under Motorola's website, and the phone knows they are there (even on CM14.1), but it simply refuses to use them.
I'm not sure of this. I used MapFactor and GPS Status & Toolbox, and the IDs of the satellites are also in the GLONASS range (https://github.com/mvglasow/satstat/wiki/NMEA-IDs). Do you have a US only version of G4 Play? I have the international version.

I can confirm my 1607 is US Retail. I tested multiple GPS apps (including GPS-S&T) and while I got signal from GLONASS satellites, it straight up refused to connect to a single one, even if the satellite had better signal than a comparable US satellite. I don't know if it's possible to flash a new modem for this model yet.
Try this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.android.gpstest
It gave me the best fix than all the others. I don't know what this guy do but it connects to more satellites and gets a fix faster.
I also have a Moto G4 Play mobile with the same problem.
You won't believe that touching to the gps device on the back side of the phone solved the problem to some extent. I go for running every morning and I use Runkeeper to track my moves. So how much distance I cover in a day is much important for me and thus gps accuracy also. But my location is tracked like a heart rate monitor of a hospital. But one day I was experimenting with my phone and found that if I remove the back cover of the phone and touch to the part where it was written Harpia GPS S01, the signal of the gps boosted and the radius of the blue circle became shorter to about 4-8 metres that means I was getting more accuracy than before. So from that day whenever I go to run, I remove the back cover and put a finger on the gps set and the problem somewhat solved. But this was only a part of the story. My father owns a Micromax Unite 3 mobile and he also used to run daily. What to say about the latter, it gives an accuracy of unbelievable 1 metre. On the latter, the runkeeper even tracks the change of lane or the side of the road. I am just jealous of the phone even though it costs 4000 rs less than mine.

Sounds like connector failed. Someone on the Lenovo forum had theirs repaired by moto and the antenna connector was what they fixed. Betting mine (and yours) are that. I replaced mine through Amazon, so far the replacement device has been working.
I'm wondering if it's a bad design on the antenna or just manufacturing defect and bad QA on some units.

Dumb question, but if the connection is exposed upon removal of the cover, isn't it possible to tear into and reconnect/solder without taking it to a manufacturer? I mean, what I see are two screws to the right of the headphone jack, a plastic cover that says "Harpia GPS S01," and what looks like some kind of antenna watermark.

Interesting. I've just checked mine (European XT1602) and it does that, too - the GLONASS satellites are showing up, but are not being used.
When I was in stock rom after some time the gps stopped working well, don't know why. Now with Aox 14.1 is working fine, I don't understand the satellites but the accuracy is pretty good

Not seeing any active Russians on that image. Your phone might still be having the same problem as everyone else.
I've bought a xt1602 yesterday. The GPS is excellent. I get a fix in few seconds with solid signals, but without glonass.
Update on the current replacement G4 Play: GPS is starting to fail on it as well. I've hardly even used it, maybe only a dozen times in the last several weeks. So far that's 3 of 3 that are defective. I think I'm going to return this one to Amazon too, not sure I want to try a 4th.

Because the three that I see are missing values under the "Flags" column. That hints at the aGPS data being there but that the phone might not have interfaced with them. The UI says 12 of 22 sats are connected. Of the 13 US shown, 12 have all fields with information and the thirteenth is missing info in one column. Granted, all of this is conjecture.
I think u are right. Ive tested it today by myself. But ive to say that this mobile phone has got a VERY fast GPS fix, atleast where i live. (Germany)
I also have bad GPS, thing I've tried:
Reset to factory settings
Safe boot
GPS Toolbox
I will now try putting the sim card in the second slot, like suggested here on the forum. Keep you posted!
Unfortunately putting the SIM card in the second slot did not better the situation. Back to the shop...
