Debating about whether to install CM7, but there have been a few problems with it. I'm having a tough time finding the current state of the following issues:
1. Sleep of Death - Nook goes to sleep and doesn't wake up, forcing a reboot. There seems to be some debate over whether this is solved. One of the threads indicates that it's not a problem if you turn wifi off with the screen. Can anyone confirm?
2. Battery drain - Battery drains at 2%-3% per hour in sleep mode. I believe this is resolved. Can anyone confirm?
3. Premature Battery Death - Battery dies at various points over 0%. There seem to be various utilities for resetting battery stats, etc., but I can't figure out whether or not this is resolved.
4. Screen stays on when plugged in - Forced to hit the screen off button when plugging in the Nook. I've seen recent complaints about this one, so I'm assuming it's not resolved.
I did go through the threads and am confused about whether these issues still exist, so I figured I would try the Q&A section. If someone with CM7 wouldn't mind jumping in, that would be great. Thanks!
1. Maybe, I'm a lucky one but I haven't had problem with SoD regardless wifi on or off. I've been using nb100 and up, and now at 138
2. Using 138, i got 2-3% drop overnight, about 8 or 10 hours. With 120, zero dropped
3. Not experienced yet since I never let it down to sub-5
4. Mine seems act the opposite way: screen off, plug in to charge, screen automatically on, have to press power button to put screen off again.
1. I haven't seen this in recent nightlies.
2. Fixed; NC now deep sleeps when unplugged, even with WiFi on.
3. Fixed as far as I know.
4. Mine acts like yours and votinh's both; these are not mutually exclusive. If you plug in while on, the screen eventually dims instead of going off. If you plug in while off, the device turns on, sometimes just the backlight. I'd call this one minor, especially in relation to the other issues.

1) I get SOD about once a day regardless of how I have it set up. It does happen less with wifi on sleep only but at work I need to push data, so my wifi is on all the time and...it's an issue, not terrible but annoying none the less.
2) Battery drain, I get about 36 hours if I use it lightly, but I tend to charge it nightly because I can't take a chance of heavy use at work and loosing it.
3) PDB, never had this problem.
4) The screen turns off by just hitting the screen off button. This isn't a big a deal actually, since you gotta plug the thing in, another button isn't a big deal. I have katecca screen lock and off in my bar at the bottom, so it's easy to turn off. I also have the nook power off widget but I haven't used it much.
That's great. Thanks a lot for the responses. Really helpful.
I have only had it CM7 on my nook for one day, so im not sure about the battery issue. But i know i put it down around 10pm last night with less then half a battery and i got home from work around 3pm and it had about 25% batt left.
Besides that sometimes when i plug it in it stays lit up. but thats a "meh who cares" to me at least.
Running 7.1.0 RC1 with Dal's OC, On Demand, with lowered Voltage on the steps
1) I've only had one SOD ever (knock on wood), it seems to be mostly cleared up
2) Battery drain has not been a problem for me. On .29 it was more only 1%/hr for battery drain.
3) I haven't experienced early battery death at all
4) It isn't a big deal, especially if you charge with the provided outlet adapter for quick charge. Don't see this preventing you from installing CM7.
If these stats are correct from ASI (I'm hoping they are, they sound right), I'm at 76% after 3 days, 19 hours uptime, and 7 hours of it without sleep.
I say go for it. Even if it is off SD (mines on emmc) it is still a much better experience than stock/rooted. I doubt anything will make me change from CM7, unless ICS becomes a viable option in the future.
Just a follow up on this. I installed CM7 and have not had a Sleep of Death, have normal battery drain comparable to stock rooted, and have not had premature battery death. The screen does come on when I plug the Nook in, but like everyone mentioned, I just turn it off and it's no big deal.
So far, my wifi actually reconnects more reliably than on stock rooted 1.1. I'm overclocked to 1200 Mhz, with no voltage or other adjustments.
Following up again - I get a SOD or a reboot about every five times I turn off the screen in CM7. I tried to use Tasker to turn wifi off with the screen, which has solved the problem for some people but this made no difference at all. I was running a nightly from late July and updated to another from late August (173?) but the problem hasn't gone away. I may try Stock 1.2 rooted.

I had no SODs from almost a week with n165; I upgraded to n171, got an SOD first time I put it down for a while, so I reflashed n165 and I'm sticking with it until I hear of something I need.
WiFi always on.
As always, YMMV.

Just a little update:
Since using nb169, I got a few SoD, did update again to nb173, still got hit occasionally.
I never have this kind of issue before but lately.
The changes I made
a. Played around with ADW Launcher setting (especially Desktop Animation)
b. Recently installed Simi Clock and updated some apps (such Nook app)
c. Recently having 8GB uSD card plugged in.
For some reason, I don't think a. and b. causing problem but c.
can you run cm7 with the 1.2 or 1.3 updates from b&n? im on a autonooter 1.1 and have been wanting to move up to something better especially if i can have flash finally.

CM7 is custom Gingerbread-based ROM, it has nothing to do with stock ROM and there is absolutely no relationship between the two (except they are both Android OS)

thanks for the response
One last (I think) follow up. I installed stock rooted 1.2 thinking it CM7 causing me problems over the last month. Turns out I had the same problem on CM7.
I read my Nook before I go to sleep, so it's often dark in the room. I turn the brightness WAY down. The problem ended up being the Adjbrightness "Lock brightness so other applications can't change" setting. It has something to do with screen dimming when turning off the screen. This setting being on was causing frequent reboots both on CM7 and stock rooted 1.2. I ended up going to ScreenFilter instead, and the problem has completely gone away at least so far.

I try to stay up to date with the latest nightlies.
1) This is not completely solved. It's rare now (I think it was issues with WiFi), but it has still happened to me recently.
2) Battery drain was fixed with kernels that support Deep Sleep correctly. Not any 7.0.x builds, only 7.1.x+ (RC1) and nightlies have fixed kernel. So this shouldn't be an issue (unless you have a rogue app that is keeping the CPU active, which would prevent Deep Sleep. The "CPU Spy" app will let you see if this is working correctly).
3) This is better, but still a problem. My Nook Color will just switch off at 4% battery now. It use to switch off when I was a lot higher. It's not supposed to do that. It's supposed to gracefully shutdown when low. I have several iOS and Apple devices, so I'm use to things shutting down correctly when low. My Nook Color always just randomly powers off.
4) This isn't a big deal. The screen comes on when charging, but you can turn it off if you want. It stays dim, and the Nook Color charges fine. Dalingrin (the kernel developer guy) said leaving the screen on was a fix to some nasty crash.
#3 is the biggest issue to me, as I've been in the middle of something when my Nook Color randomly powered off. Clearing battery stats, rebooting, etc - none of that makes it perfect.
#1 use to be the biggest problem, but it's very rare for me now.
#2 has been fixed, and #4 doesn't bother me.

I misspoke; n165 SOD's on me too, so I conclude that I dl'd 165 and didn't flash it; I reflashed n161 and have been stable since.
I keep WiFi on for email and podcast updates.
I've always got an 8G uSD card in.

Hey guys,
I currently have a Galaxy Nexus and I really love it, but I'm one of those guys that really loves to try new devices and I feel like the Note would be the last device I wanted for a very long time if I got it. I thought the Nexus would be this device, but the Note just intrigues me..
I was just wondering what kind of battery life you guys see? Isn't the Note battery over 2,000 mAH stock? (2,600?)
I guess the huge deal with the Nexus for me was ICS. I've been lurking your development forums and saw that CM9 is pretty much close to functional aside from the camera and some other things kernel related, is this an incorrect assumption?
Lastly.. Is ANYONE using this on T-mobile? Either living with EDGE speeds or even having a mobile hotspot on the side to use for the data?
Thanks guys!
Also, is there CM7 in any form?
Hi there!
For battery life its very dependent on the user, the note comes with 2500mAH of battery power, I find it lacking because of the new stuff I can do with the note as compared to my Galaxy S1 and S2.
For Cyanogen
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1423795&highlight=cm9
As EarlZ said battery life would depend on usage pattern.
With my usage pattern, averaging about 2.5 hours of screen on time, at the end of the day, after about 15 hours, the battery is at about 40-50%. I use it mostly for browsing, & watching videos. So I still charge nightly but I find it more than adequate.
My auto-brightness is set to on and I don't use any additional power saving features.
As other posters said, the battery is 2500 mAh. As for battery usage example: today, after 13 hours of usage, the battery still has 38% remaining.
Usage means: data connection active all the time; display on for 2 hours (auto brightness); Nemo Picross played for about 1/2 hour; browsing, email, a few SMS, a little talk (just a little, some minutes); bluetooth on all the time and a MBW-150 connected using OpenWatch for at least 10 hours; WiFi on for about 1/2 hour in the morning. Also, I don't use any battery optimizers, no task killers etc. It's basically a stock Galaxy Note, with Zeam Launcher instead of TW, and rooted.
As for the battery - previous posters are spot on. To sum it up - most likely you will need to charge every day, unless you don't use your phone much (which is highly unlikely if you have such an awesome device).
As for CM7 - I haven't seen any CM7 mods for note. Maybe I've missed it, but I guess it's because ICS will come out soon for Note and there's not really a point in getting CM7 working if CM9 is so close.
As for CM9 and ICS - I wanted to wait for a more polished version and visited the forums multiple times a day, hoping an ICS leak from samsung had come out, but in the end I couldn't wait more and installed the current CM9 build (link a few posts up) and I am now using it daily (for about 4 days now). Apart from a few annoyances, it is absolutely great! Camera doesn't work yet, which is a shame, but I can live with that for now. As I get it, Bluetooth is unstable (I don't use BT so I don't care), battery stats don't work (it still shows the percentage and the graph, but doesn't give a breakdown of the percentage each app consumes). MTP doesn't work, so you have to either use adb to push files or reboot in recovery and activate mass storage there. A bit annoying, but not a deal-breaker for me, since I have a SMB file server at home, so I just put my needed files there and then pull them using wifi with a file manager that supports SMB.
There are a few more slight annoyances, for example:
After the phone goes into deep sleep, you can usually only wake it by pressing power button (as opposed to current gingerbread ROMs, where you can also use the physical HOME button). Some people report rarely not being able to wake the device after it goes into deep sleep, speculating that it might be caused by not locking the screen manually but allowing it to lock via inactivity time-out. Also, some apps show some black artifacts, as if the screen was "rotting away" before your eyes . This can be fixed by forcing graphics acceleration in the settings. Supposedly this can break other apps, but I haven't yet run into one that wouldn't work. Once my battery drained on this ROM about 40% overnight, but that was probably some bad app, since it only happened once. Also, once the screen time-out set itself to "no time-out" so my screen was on multiple hours and drained most of my battery, but this has also only happened once. There are also some random FCs and sometimes the back button closes the app, but you can just run the app again and usually it will be where you left it, so no big deal.
Other than that, it's AMAZING! Very smooth, battery life seems quite good, GPS gets a lock VERY fast (people are saying it's also true in gingerbread, but I was never able to get as fast GPS lock on any non-ICS ROM. All the apps I have tried work fine, with one exception being the CM Music app (the one for ICS). Besides, as soon as an ICS leak from Samsung comes out, I think the CM9 ROM will be in a very stable state very quickly.
So, I would say, go for the Note!
Unplugged it at 8am many phone calls with moderate usage, from 2.30pm continuous non stop web surfing and browser youtubing until exactly 6pm, 31% was left.with brightness auto wifi and gps on.
I was wondering if Juice Defender actually increases battery life on a Nook? More specifically, my Nook is running Samiam's nightly ICS builds. If anyone has experience with using Juice Defender on a nook, on ICS, or both I would like to hear from you.
I have used JD on CM 7.1+ and on rooted B&N 1.4.1, and it definitely makes a difference, even just controlling wifi. I have it set to auto-disable wifi after one minute when the screen goes off unless there's traffic being transferred. It turns on wifi to sync for 30s every 2 hours, and shuts off connectivity completely late at night until morning. Otherwise, it turns on wifi once the screen is turned on.
I make sure very little polling goes on, and don't have any live wallpapers or active widgets.
On B&N 1.4.1, battery consumption is essentially flat when the unit is not in use, and about 10% per hour when screen and wifi are on.
I've also tried Green Power, and while I liked it quite a bit on my phone, it seemed to cause problems on my NC running CM.
The next step I'm contemplating is only enabling wifi when select apps are in the foreground. I could just as easily do this with Tasker, of course. I'm not expecting a big difference, as the screen eats, by far, the most battery when on. I do like that JD will wake up my device throughout the workday to refresh email and my calendar. Otherwise, a battery policy of off when screen is off would suit my purposes.
No idea on ICS, sorry.
Got too many FCs using JuiceDefender 3.2.0 with ICS 02012012 on SD card. Dropped it. Never noticed much difference when it was running on CM7 anyway. FWIW
I'm sure Tasker would be perfect for this!

On CM, you can set wifi policy. Unfortunately, on the stock B&N ROMs, you can't. The only thing you'd gain with Juice Defender or similar would be the ability to have it wake up periodically and briefly fire up wifi to refresh apps. If the wifi policy settings are working, I wouldn't tinker with them! I'm not running ICS yet, but if it has these settings, it's probably most of what you'd gain from using JD.

If you can come up with a short list of apps that do require wifi, it's perfect. I'm using tasker on my NOOK Simple Touch and it's perfect for limiting wifi when the device is actually on.
You could set up Tasker to periodically wake up and briefly enable wifi if you want a periodic poll when the screen is off. I've done this on my phone. It's not as elegant as JD though.
I didn't notice a significant difference with JD on ICS. to save battery, i've just been putting it in airplane mode when not in use for now. By my usage, it generally lasts from when i wake up, around 7-8, until midnight where it reaches about 20% and i plug it in for the night.
Yeah thats what I've found after a couple days use. I just wanna thank everyone who answered you've all been helpful.
Hi, I don't know what to do, I'm running 4.2.1 stock on my 32 3G N7. The tablet cannot go in deep sleep because of constant baseband_xmm_power kernel wakelocks. I tried factory reset, but the problem persists. For example with 5h the screen off, there are >4 hours partial kernel wakelocks.
Same here and I'm sick of it. Sometimes my Nexus manages to enter deep sleep but I still see a significant percentage of that kernel wakelock. It also happens that wifi won't shut off on sleep, and I'm talking about when it truly enters deep sleep, and it's correctly configured.
I have the same problem. Battery life is really poor due to this. My LP core is running at full tilt for at least half the time the screen is off, preventing deep sleep.
I found a suggestion that turning on flight mode and then rebooting might help, but I think the problem recurs pretty quickly if not immediately.
Saw a post that said it's due to the modem switching power levels when radio reception is poor. That would definitely make sense in my case — 3G reception fluctuates a lot at home and I am constantly losing connection. I have removed the SIM and will check it in the morning to see if there's any improvement. (Using BetterBatteryStats).
Hope this bug gets fixed in the next update. Almost thinking I should have got the vanilla wifi model
________________
EDIT: Removing SIM overnight doesn't help. Over the course of 8h screen off, baseband_xmm_power was active for 7h 46m!
I'm having the same problem, only when mobile reception is poor. Unfortunately, my mobile coverage at home is currently near-zero, which makes using my tablet as an alarm clock a dicey proposition unless I plug it in overnight.
I've been running cm-10.0.0-epicmtd.zip "Stable" since it was released. I wiped the phone and started from scratch before flashing it. I had been running various RandomRoms prior to CM10
I found CM 10 Stable to be buggy for me. It would often shut down applications I was running, most notably Waze navi and Torque OBD2 logging software. It would also sometimes leave me with a black screen on bootup, which required a battery pull. I also had an issue where GPS would never work after a reboot, unless I first turned GPS off then back on. To top it off, I found battery life to be pretty poor. Even if I turned off data when not using it, it would still suck a battery down in 12 hours of light use. I have 2 spare 1800 mAh batteries, so that was not a big deal for me. The final bug was that it some times would take a reboot to get it to download MMS pictures.
I flashed CM10.1 M2, from the CM auto-updater, a few days ago and have been very happy with it. I had to flash the latest GAPPS as well, and delete the clock data. The only other bug was that I had to uninstall and reinstall facebook last night, after it stopped working. Almost all of the complaints I had about CM10 have been addressed. The only one left is the MMS bug.
I also find everything to be smoother and snappier with CM10.1, except for opening texts, which is somewhat slower, but not too bad. Battery life is substantially improved, and I'm not even turning data off now. Power usage is reduced to the point where my battery actually charges when running navi with the screen on at 25%. Before, it would hardly charge with navi running and the screen off. That is with a 2A charger and an Apple type USB cable so the phone sees it as an AC charger.
At this point, I am so happy with my Epic 4G that I see no reason to upgrade it.

I've never tried that before, but just installed Bluetooth File Transfer and wasn't able to make it work. Not sure if the problem is my Apple computer though. My PC doesnt have BT.

Agreed I will use this build until the wheels fall off.
I wound up flashing the nitest kernel and Nexus S 4G modem and the experience gets even better.
I like it so much now, that I just picked up a new Epic on Ebay to replace my current one, which has over 2 years of battle scars on it and some button issues.
