N4 massive battery issues - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Or more like charging issues?
I've got this phone in December and I'm pretty satisfied with it. The only thing that kinda annoys me is the fact that my phone often won't charge properly and I'm not sure if it's because of the charger (the one that comes with the Nexus) or the battery.
When I charge it, it says that it's charging. Just like it should be. The problem is though, that it's not really charging. A few seconds later it says that it's discharging, not even a second later it's charging again, then discharging and it goes like that all the time. I'm almost sure that this harms my battery a lot. When I let it charge over night, most of the time the battery level is under 100% (50-60% are more likely) and that is kinda frustrating when going to work.
So I want to know: does anybody have the same issue or something similar? Or do I just have a faulty device/charger? This issue has been plaguing me for around a month now.

Have you tried it with another charger? I always use a universal charger and that works fine. If that doesn`t help it is probably a hardware issue and you`ll need to get it fixed.

AW: N4 massive battery issues
Unfortunately I don't have any charger with an output of 1.2A. All of them are under 1.2A and most are broken anyway (also chargers from my last phone, LG Optimus 2X). Seems like I'm just not that lucky when it comes to chargers.. I'll try to find one though. Thanks for the reply.

Just to test it, use your computer usb. It isn't full power but it is enough to see if there is an issue. Maybe a new cable?

AW: N4 massive battery issues
Not sure if this is related to my computer now but when I plug it in it says charging and as soon as the MTP notification pops up it doesn't charge anymore.
Should I try to fully discharge my battery and then recharge it?

Okay so I somehow fixed it.. most likely temporarily but it seems like the issue is the cable. I pretty much "straightened" the cable with my fingers (was applying pressure to the cable and then went slowly downwards) and that apparently worked o_o..
Now it's been charging for 15 minutes without disconnecting once. I hope it'll remain like that..

[Q] Nexus 7 does not charge while on.

My Nexus 7 is no longer charging while turned on. If I power it off it'll charge with the battery symbol. I can't even get my PC to recognize it while plugged in to USB. I'm using the stock charger and cable. Any thoughts?
I'm currently running Paranoid Android 2.54, however when this started I was on 2.50. I thought flashing a newer version might help.
Not charging
Plus 1 on this issue,
Running stock ROM and it updated yesterday to version JOP40C now it's only charging when turned off.
+1, same here, but now it won't charge as the battery got completly drained.
Still does not charge. This is a launch N7, curious if Google will replace it.

I just received a replacement seven this week for the same issue, mine stopped charging. I called google play customer service, and they didn't give me a hastle at all.
Were you rooted/running a custom ROM? I am, and with my N7 not getting recognized I feel like flashing back to stock might be problematic.

yea, rooted, custom ROM and kernel. doesn't matter though, it just started one day randomly. I finally did get it to charge BTW, by giving it a few firm smacks on the back. they didn't even ask if it was with root or if it was a custom ROM. if its hardware related, it won't make a difference. i sent it back with twrp recovery, rasbean jelly rom, and trinity kernel. i did wipe the data and the storage before i sent it in.
Yeah my Nexus' charging is messed up since 4.2. Battery seems to run down extremely quickly (around 30% in two hours with Spotify on and general browsing.) Plugging it into the wall with the official charger sometimes charges it EXTREMELY slowly, and sometimes just says its charges and still the battery is running down.
It happened to charge last night, and over the course of around 10 hours, I think I had 60% battery. Trying to charge now, and nothing, just losing battery. No idea what the issue could be. Tablet completely stock.

+1 on this issue. N7 isn't charging when turned on, no charging issues if turned off. It isn't recognized when connected to a PC. Whenever I try switching users, the darn thing restarts itself. It does the same thing when I try USB debugging. I am running 4.2.1.
Please help!
Investigated problem
After upgrading to 4.2.1 my N7 charged very slowly. Finally today I decided to investigate it, albeit inaccurately.
Plugging a 2A charger into my 120V power monitor, I noticed the following:
When the N7 was on, the power draw continually alternated between 0 watts and 2 watts.
When the N7 had been shut down from the bootloader (not from the OS) and the cable plugged in/out, the power draw was a constant 2 watts.
The max charging rate of the N7 is around 10 watts.
So it looks like the N7 is will charge either very slowly, or kind of slowly. What I find strange is that this issue only occurs on some devices. Perhaps later devices use a different charging controller?
Either way, would really like a fix for this.

From the way you described your test setup, you seem to be measuring the power consumed by the charger itself on a 120 VAC source. The wattage there should be low, albeit still higher than what you're seeing. Along that line, if you ever see it go up anywhere near 10 watts, then something has gone horribly wrong.
Also, the slow charging seems to be peculiar to 4.2 and above, indicating that it is not actually a hardware issue.
same!
Been having the same problem for a few days now, I was on stock 4.2 and updated today to a custom ROM based off of 4.2.1 and there is still no difference. Anyone found a solution yet?? Its quite concerning especially since I got mine from GameStop in the US then moved to the UK shortly after!
Just wanted to add, before this started I was having the same problem that is talked about here http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-7-tablet-forum/228706-nexus-7-problem-wont-charge-when-does-screen-goes-dead-pixels-fly-across-screen.html
I figured it was caused by letting the battery drain completely so I opened it up pulled the battery plug out, plugged it back in and charged it till it was full and it continued to work. haven't let it die since.
Same problem here, stock Nexus 7 running 4.2.1, roughly 2 months old.
It charges when the device is turned off, but will not charge when powered on -- started happening about 2 weeks ago (charged fine previously). This is using the stock brick and cable that came with the tablet.
I have to imagine that this is a software issue and that the next one will have a similar problem -- has anyone else swapped one out and had the problem disappear with the new one?

[Q] Slow Charge?

Had my Nexus 7 about a week now, had some system restarts at random times (when not even using the device) which is a bit of a concern, but read it could be the 4.2 update. But as hasn't happened while using so far it's not annoyed me. However charging is becoming a bit annoying. It's taking forever!
I have a battery widget installed and its stats tell the story. Battery is usually fully charge in: 6 hours 59 minutes.
It's plugged into the wall, with the cable and charger it came with, tried using an Apple charger block to see if it was that, no luck. Not tried another Micro USB cable yet, but may do if anyone thinks it could be that?
Also according to the stats it charges 1% every 7 minutes and I put it on charge at 9:45am this morning at 35% and it currently on 66% and it is now 2:55pm. It also says it will finish charging at 7:00pm tonight.
The app/widget is Battery Widget? Reborn! Does this have anything to do with the slow charging?
But this is a bit of a joke to be honest. Is my device faulty?
Mine charged from 1% to full in 2h10m today. Stock charger.

You are using the original 2A charger right? Have you tried with an other USB cable on it (might be broken?)
Also try to monitor your charging without the app, just write down what time you plugged it in at what percent and check it that way. (the app might show wrong readings).
If you have an other 2A charger you can borrow, you can try to eliminate that to. Not sure how long it takes via a regular USB port on the PC.
If it keeps charging that slow, your battery might be defect..
Good luck anyway

[Q] 3 Hours of Charging = 30% Battery

I'm unsure what's wrong!!!
My phone has been fine, until it died today. I practice a 1 charge a day rule and I let my battery drain completely before I even think about putting it back on the charger.
Today, my phone died a littler earlier than expected, but that's okay because I was using my iPhone for most of the day. I got home at about 11PM and put my phone on the charger at 11:15PM. Here it is, 2:25AM and my phone only has 30% charge.
I've never noticed it charging this slowly before because I typically put it on the charger before I go to sleep and take it off when I wake up. This doesn't seem normal from ANY phone that I've ever used or troubleshooted in my life.
Why so slow? Is everyone's phone just as slow or should I be concerned?
Edit: I am using the charger that came with my phone in the same wall outlet that I've used since I got the phone. Nothing else is plugged into that outlet, either.
It would seem sensible to try a different charger and power outlet.

Your should be at 100% in that 3 hours. Try using a tablet wall charger.
With my phone, sometimes it charges in a flash, and sometimes it's charging for hours, idk why they do this.

I don't have another charger. All I own is Apple products, unfortunately.
I've done other other outlets throughout the house before posting, but I wouldn't see why the one I'm using is compromised in the slightest. It's charged the phone fine since I've gotten it.

The only Tablet I have is my iPad. I was thinking about just using the A/C adapter, but I was worried that that might mess something up with my luck. LOL.
You can't use the iPhone\iPad chargers as most of them don't comply with the USB charging standard (It will only charge at 500ma, the limit of USB charging).
You said it died quicker than usual as well? Sure nothing is running that drains the battery? Check the battery usage in settings after leaving it unplugged a while and see if you see anything that's using a ridiculous amount of battery.
I've had the same problem. Sometimes I plug mine into a wall charger and it reads Charging (USB) which may be your problem. Other times it reads Charging (AC).

It's been off of the charger for about an an hour and a half and nothing out of the norm is draining the battery. Screen on time is at 40%, but that's because I was reading all of my sports news and stuff from my device.
Interesting thing to note: I'm at 79% on my Nexus 4 after about an hour and a half unplugged and doing regular browsing. I'm at 98% on my 4s with doing just about the same things as I've done on my Nexus 4, and even watching a YouTube video on my 4s. I've also had a great deal of voice calls and texts this morning to my iPhone. They were neck and neck when I first got my N4 on December 10th. Now, it's dying faster. The only difference is that I've installed Spotify on my Nexus 4 since then... Which isn't running.

It was reading USB last night! I thought that was normal, lmao... Thinking it meant "there is a USB cable charging it and not wireless charging."
Hm... The plot thickens, I guess.
Yeah it sometimes reads USB but if you unplug then plug it back in, it will change to AC. Not sure how to fix it but that's your problem right there.
Question: are you stock, rooted stock, or different ROM?

[Q] Nexus 7 will not charge

my nexus7 will not charge until it has completely drained....
I am aware of the current battery problems, but mine is a bit different....
Even after going to bootloader and choosing power off my nexus will sit on charge (wall) overnight and be dead in the morning, even though it was at 30% when plugged in....
The only way to charge it seems to be off my laptop. but even then it takes over a full day to charge.
If i hook up to laptop while runing it basically only slows down the drain but still doesn't charge up....
this is very frustrating, and i'm at my ropes end
would dowgrading to an older rom take care of this issue?

No solution, I'm afraid, I'm chiming in to say that I have also been having problems since the same time. For two days, I have been trying different combos of chargers, cables, and outlets, to see if other equipment is the problem. But all of it works fine with my Nexus 4. Mostly, I am experiencing that the unit says "charging" but the battery level is going down instead of up. I managed to get a full charge overnight by using an external battery that I got just for this type of emergency backup. After use, it is back down. This morning, third cable I tried finally seems to be working, for now. In 40 minutes it went from 63% to 65%. I am somewhat relieved but this situation is not normal.
I'm going to start reading through the forum to try some suggestions. I wasn't paying attention to updates. Has this problem been triggered by a recent update?
I understand some suggestions call for letting the battery discharge entirely. It seems that won't be hard to do. I can leave it plugged in and, as happened with most of the cables I tried, the battery level will go down to zero pretty fast. I'm really annoyed, but very happy right now that I splurged on an external battery.
Have you tried a new charging block... That would more that likely be your culprit.

I used three different chargers plus the external battery. Two of the chargers have two inputs (i.e., for Apple and non-Apple products). I have five different charging cords, longest is 6 ft and the others much shorter (two are from Monoprice), and one retractable I usually use in the car. I tried every combination I could think of between chargers, cables, input ports, and several different electrical outlets at two locations.
All the various combos functioned fine with my Nexus 4, the other device I have with me. None of them worked with the Nexus 7. All showed as "charging", but they weren't. In some cases, the numbers were going down quote rapidly. Goes without saying, when you're charging, it shouldn't go from 64% to 59%.
The thing that finally worked - with no hiccups - was the external battery. Since everything worked on the Nexus 4, it's quite apparent the problem is the Nexus 7.
Having said that, by this morning, things inexplicably changed for the better. With the device at around 70%, I connected one of the chargers and it functioned normally. Battery filled up within the normal timeframe. I was using it intermittently while charging, as I often do.
I'm glad it's working and very glad I have the external battery that can fill up both the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 in a pinch. But I still think there's something wrong with the Nexus 7, and I'm not knowledgeable enough to dare try some of the more technical suggestions. Just the term "shorting out the pins" is enough to warn me that I'm not expert enugh to try anything like that. For now it works, I hope it lasts like that until perhaps I can understand the issues a little better.
I'm having the exact same issue as you guys and it has me stumped. On some days it'll work, others it wouldn't. At first I thought I could fix it by rebooting but last night mine just drained all the way down overnight while charging from around 50% and this morning I wasn't having much luck getting it charged using the 2 stock Nexus 7 wall chargers that I have. I'll try using an external that I got recently and hopefully that'll solve the issue for now at least.
Edit: Some people have had luck reversing the polarity on their charging block. I'll give that a go and report back whether it worked for me or not.
Edit/Update: Yup, flipped my brick around so that the big end sticks off the left side and it's at 32% now from 0% after 2.5 hours. You guys might have some luck with this too.
Nexus 7 fails to charge
We have two Nexus 7 in the house, one 11 months the other 6 months old.* The older one stopped charging just before our holiday last month so we took the other. It stopped charging while we were away.* Fortunately my wife had here Samsung Ace [mains] phone charger with her. This worked every time.*
Once home I checked the two Nexus 7 mains units and 2 Nexus 7 usb cables. No combination would charge either Nexus 7.* The Samsung mains charger would always charge both Nexus 7.
Solution:* Suspicious, I ordered an Asus Nexus 7 cradle while we were away. Any combination of Nexus 7 mains unit and usb cable charges both Nexus 7s on the cradle.
Conclusion: The USB socket on the Nexus 7 cannot take repeated insertion and removal of the cable.
Hope this may help somebody.
Yea I had the EXACT same story as you. I had for got to take my nexus 7 charger on holiday but I had my Samsung galaxy ace (s5830i) charger so I used that. when I came back and pluged In my charger It said that It wasn't charging so I used my brothers nexus 7 charger but still no good. It said that my brothers nexus 7 was charging but not mine and than I figured out what I had damaged... My nexus 7 charging port. I had proved this by comparing the the 2 charges and they where very different... Luckly It was still under warranty so I took it to (I cant tell you that). I looked all innocent and pretended I was new to this stuff and they then tried to charge it but no use so they replaced it with a new one but now I know not to put different chargers in my new nexus 7 and that goes to people out there as well

Nexus 4 charging very slow

Hi so my nexus 4 is charging very slowy, I've this phone for 1 year and I don't know what's happening...Also that might explain (why but)...... if its because of my charger or what. But I need help like I'm just wondering why this is happening? Thanks. Also I don't know if this is happening because of the 4.4 update or something lol?

Apparently something is wrong if you see it charging slowly becoming ever since day one, I've felt that it charges really slow!
The only way to test your theory is to downgrade and see what happens. (as far as the upgrade is concerned)
If you have another charger, obviously that would help as well to see if the n4 charger is shot.

I have recently started seeing this problem as well. I even tired a different kernel thinking maybe that would solve it, but to no avail.
I will try with a different charger and see if that would help.

When you go to the battery history (from quick settings for example), does it show (constantly or alternating) USB charging when lugged to wall socket? When i had this, i changed my USB charging cable (the charger is ok but the cable died quickly)
Charging slow is usually due to the charger, try another one that is at least 1A output (original charger is 1.2). Nokia ac-10x is perfect and pretty cheap.
Other causes can be bad charging port or sometimes even a battery drain caused by software.
Whenever you plug in the charger make sure that your Phone shows "Charging (AC)" in your battery setting. If it says "Charging (USB)" then unplug and replug it again. Keep doing until it shows "Charging (AC)"...... On USB charging it charges at 500mA which is half the charging speed of AC charging. I had this issue and I am doing the same to charge it quickly. It doesn't take more than 2h 15mins to charge.
