[Q] 4.2.x Cannot write to USB drives - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am using Paranoid 3.0 + latest M-kernel and I am encountering an issue where I cannot write to USB drives.
Reading from the files works fine but I cannot create anything (files or directories).
I have tried with two different FAT32 formatted USB drives.
Do you know what could be the case here?
Thanks!

stickmount + exfat fs

USB Host Diagnostics reports that it can detect my USB device.
My rooted Nexus 7 has Stickmount and I would like to read and write to the exfat filesystem.
Does the stock kernel support exfat, I am wondering if this is the problem that I can't see any files on the USB Key.
If so, has anyone compiled the exfat.ko or have some workaround ?
I am fairly sure that the USB-OTG cable is fine, it's been recommended several times

Using my rooted stock kernel with StickMount, I was unable to see any files on my USB drive formatted as exFAT.
I tested the same drive formatted as NTFS and FAT32 and they worked just fine. Searching around other forums, it looks like the stock kernel doesn't support exFAT.
It's possible that a custom kernel could support it, but I haven't found any specific kernels with exFAT support.

[Q] Native USB OTG Storage Support

Hi,
there are many ROMs out there for our beloved Nexus 10, but it seems that only few support external storage via USB OTG. I couldn't figure out how to enable it manually. Is there any kind of mod or kernel that does the trick? I tried some apps on the play store, but I don't like the idea of an app sitting between the android system and storage hardware.
Thanks in advance!
Cheers,
ping
I think all custom kernels have USB OTG support in them, and maybe I am ignorant since I dont care about OTG support but I thought all "major" ROMs worked with them. Hmm.
Maybe you're right, but in that case USB OTG seems not to necessarily include USB OTG storage. I noticed, that while ParanoidAndroid did not recognize my USB storage device, it was still able to detect things like mouse and keyboard correctly.
Example:
[ROM+KERNEL] [AOSP] AOSP+ 4.2.1 - JOP40D - Cust.Settngs+OTG+OC+More - 20 Dec 2012
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1998585
USB OTG Information:
1. Auto-mount to /storage/usbdisk
2. Files accessible by all applications, processes and users
3. Currently works with FAT & NTFS partitions
4. Full read-write access for FAT USB disks, read-only access for NTFS USB disks
5. This does not conform to the Android 4.2 multi-user capabilities. All users have full access to the OTG storage
6. If you are using another custom kernel, make sure it does not overwrite the ramdisk changes or you make lose OTG support
I am sure there are other ROMS. Do a "OTG Support" search in the "Nexus 10 Android Development" forum and find what suits you.
Cm 10.1 and AOKP both support native OTG for USB drives.

ROM? try root + StickMount + *browser for root
ops! i didn't read the last part of you post :/
thanks for your replies,
it seems like the only up-to-date ROMs that aim on native USB OTG storage are indeed cm10.1 and aokp.
however, apascual89's paranoidandroid might soon support it too.
i think that is worth having an eye on it.

[Q] External SD StickMount error... Help, plz!

Using StickMount with my N10 (stock OTA), And I've had no issues when using a flash drive with an OTG cable. However, I just got an Elago micro SD USB adapter (which is awesome!), used with the same OTG cable, but I'm having problems writing to USB storage. I've been using Solid Explorer to move / copy (neither works).
Yes, I'm rooted, and I already tried fixing permissions using RomManager. Any ideas, guys? Error screen attached.

I had a similar problem (saying permission denied even though I was rooted) with only one external harddrive I have. My others work, my sd cards in usb readers work, my stand alone flash drives work, but that one drive won't mount correctly for whatever reason. I tried formatting it with no luck.
My theory is it's some driver issue with the way that perticular drive is communicating (or not communicating, in this case) with the device.
You may be expereincing the same issue... I don't think it's a permissions issue, I think it's a hardware driver issue.
I've had some problems mounting an external HD. The problems might be different from what you're having but I've found a workaround that works for me. Hook it up to a computer and click safely remove hardware. Try again. It usually solves my problem.

[Q] USB OTG for Games with GL to SD

Just wondering if someone could see whether this app works for moving large game data to USB OTG by using GL to SD with stickmount. with android 4.2.
It claims to be working on android 4.2.
As shown in the screenshots, you can change the external SD path. Why not change it to USB OTG path?

Don't worry.
It will automatically detect sdcard or otg path.
Work fine on my Nexus7 3G with Android 4.2.1.
You need to connect your storage first with stickmount.
But I don't promise work with Android 4.1.
Support otg from 4.2.
What did u use?

Usb 3.0 port differs from 2.0 see the usb port of note 3 so it might be a problem to include it....since some HDD consume more power they will not work..ive tried with OTG and a trancend usb 3.0 8gb pendrive and it worked flawlessly

also pls can you try an external hddso that i woud be certain that this is not a issue with my phone only. thanks in advance
anybody else getting same issue? (notification saying usb safe to remove..)

All you have to do is install Paragon NTFS & HFS+ on your phone & grant it superuser permission. Now use ES File Explorer to go to the /mount directory & you will find your hard disk partition there.
Sometimes you may get an error while trying to access the files in the secondary partitions. For this issue you will have to manually unmount those partitions in Paragon app and mount them to a location of your choice.
Hope this helps.
