HELLO EVERYONE AT XDA, TODAY I WILL BE SHOWING YOU HOW TO RESET FLASH COUNTER AND DEVICE STATUS ON THE SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 10.1
I DON'T TAKE ANY CREDIT FOR THE APPS I WILL BE USING BUT YOU CAN PRESS THE THANKS BUTTON FOR ME FOR MAKING THIS GUIDE
REQUIREMENTS:
SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 10.1 ROOTED [ OF COURSE ]
TRIANGLE AWAY APP [ DOWNLOAD BELOW ]
PROCEED AS FOLLOWS:
DOWNLOAD TRIANGLE AWAY APP AND INSTALL
GIVE ROOT PERMISSIONS AND DOWNLOAD THE REQUIRED FILES ACCORDING TO YOUR MODEL
THEN AFTER DOWNLOADING IS COMPLETE, TAP RESET FLASH COUNTER AND STATUS [ YOU WILL BE TAKEN TO A DIFFERENT BOOT MENU ]
HERE YOU SEE YOUR CURRENT STATUS, PRESS VOLUME UP BUTTON TO RESET FLASH COUNTER AND STATUS AND IT WILL REBOOT
IMMEDIATELY AFTER REBOOT, POWER OFF THE DEVICE. NOW WE GO INTO DOWNLOAD MODE
PRESS POWER BUTTON AND VOLUME DOWN BUTTON TOGETHER, YOU WILL SEE A MENU, PRESS VOLUME UP BUTTON AND CHECK WHAT THE STATUS IS [ IN MY CASE IT IS ]
ODIN MODE

SYSTEM STATUS: official
YOUR STATUS MUST BE EXACTLY THE SAME EXCEPT FOR THE PRODUCT NAME
IF IT THE SAME AS ABOVE,NOW FLASH STOCK RECOVERY VIA ODIN BUT UNCHECK THE AUTO REBOOT.THEN WHEN FLASINGH COMPLETE, PRESS AND HOLD VOLUME UP AND POWER BUTTON TO REBOOT INTO RECOVERY MODE.ONCE IN RECOVERY REBOOT FROM THERE.
NOTE:
YOU MUST HAVE STOCK ROM, STOCK RECOVERY AND STOCK KERNEL
TESTED ON GT-N8000
TROUBLESHOOTING:
THE DEVICE STATUS DOES NOT CHANGE TO OFFICIAL : FLASH STOCK RECOVERY AND TRY AGAIN
IF STILL THE DEVICE STATUS IS CUSTOM OR MODIFIED, CAREFULLY REPEAT THE STEPS ABOVE ( 1 TO 6 ) AND CHECK IF IT STILL CUSTOM, FLASH STOCK RECOVERY ONLY AND CHECK STATUS : IF IT IS OFFICIAL IN DOWNLOAD MODE AND SETTINGS THEN NO NEED TO DO A FACTORY RESET
IMPORTANT POINTS:
THE DEVICE CAN CHANGE BACK TO CUSTOM IF YOU CHECK IN SETTING, JUST DO A RESTART OR POWER OFF AND START, IT WILL BE OFFICIAL
SOME APPS THAT ASK FOR ROOT PERMISSION ON START, CAN ALSO TRIGGER THE STATUS TO CHANGE : YOU CAN DISABLE IT OR UNINSTALL IT
I HAVE TESTED THE ABOVE METHOD BY MYSELF AND IT WORKS ALSO I HAVE ATTACHED SCREENSHOTS TO PROVE THAT I HAVE ROOT AND ALL THE STATUSES OFFICIAL
FIRST TESTED ON ICE CREAM SANDWICH WITH ROOT WORKED, THEN UPDATED VIA OTA TO JELLY BEAN AND IT WORKS
WITH THIS METHOD YOU WILL NOT LOSE ROOT ACCESS AND CAN BE TESTED ON ANY SAMSUNG PHONES FOR SIMILAR CASE

I had the same experience and ended up flashing back to Factory.
So now I'm experiencing my Note 10.1 they way Samsung wanted me to ( LOL )

Why is step 6 necessary if it is already back to saying official? (I'm new to dealing with samsung's flash counter so I apologize if the answer is obvious)

yes it is neccesary because in download mode it may show SYSTEM STATUS : OFFICIAL but it does not show in settings > about device > status> device status
it will be still modified or custom there so factory reset needs to be done

I did the same thing but stayed rooted with the "Official" Device Status in About settings using mobile ODIN Pro.
Triangle away 1st, I used the latest, 2.88 I believe.
From a rooted device with mobile ODIN Pro installed I factory reset the Note 1st in settings, then using mobile ODIN flashed a stock rom onto the device ticking clear cache/data and clear dalvik cache.
After reset and setup, I'm still rooted with Mobile ODIN Pro & Supersu installed and have 0 counter, Official rom status in download mode on both parts and my About status in settings says official... This took about as long as it takes to flash the stock rom....
2nd picture, 3rd app from the right is SuperSU Pro...

but with my method u dont need to flash stock rom [ correct me if i am wrong ]

You still need to go back to a stock rom. Any custom R0Ms won't do as they use custom recoveries. Besides, I haven't seen many Custom ROM's that Can be flashed by ODIN.
And as soon as you root your tab you increase the flash counter.

Thats 100% correct .
TA + Stock Rom + Factory Reset is my preferred method to clear the three custom firmware indicators .

As of now I am rooted, have a custom firmware and high on android recovery. I want to stay rooted but remove all 3 of the custom status warnings. If I just follow this guide, will I stay rooted? I know I will have to remove my custom rom but I don't mind so it isn't a problem. Based on what ultramag69's post it sounds like I will be able to remain rooted using the guide in the OP.
It's unrelated to what I want to do now (since I want to keep root) but how is this different from unrooting. The steps seem the same. I'm confused about how/if you keep root with this method and how you would go about unrooting in the event of needing to send the tablet in for repairs to samsung.

AND I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY DO YOU EVEN WANT TO RESET THE FLASH COUNTER WHEN U ARE USING A CUSTOM ROM ????

Because you can't use the Allshare cast hub if you have a custom status in the bootloader section and a raised count.
This has been raised before....
You may want to alter the name of the thread to say for stock roms as this may come up again.
With the method I put forward you will loose your custom rom but you will retain a stock rooted rom with all statuses as "Official" and "0" flash counter. Afterwards you may be able to flash a custom rom but I believe the system status will go back to "Custom" as custom roms install custom recoveries and play around with system files that get scanned after initial boot...

Likewise the thread says how to reset and does not say how to reset stock rom only .

IMPORTANT: This guide is for the i9300 variant of the S3. Those with other variants - Please use this guide ONLY if you know for sure it will work for you.

The problem is that many of you may have unlocked your bootloaders, and this guide DOES NOT apply if you need to re-lock.
Right - I hope this is the correct section. I only just completely restored my S3 to factory state and I had to use so many articles over the web, half of them not even bringing me back to the original state. If you follow this, you will bring it back to a condition that will in effect recover your warranty and you'll be able to send it off. I'm also a new member(just signed up today) and I actually signed up because I wanted to post this haha.

Process Overview
1. Reset Binary Counter
2. Flash Stock Recovery
3. Device Wipe
4. Flash Stock ROM
5. Done!
Instructions
1. Reset Binary Counter
Right so the S3 has a feature known as the binary counter - this counter is incremented everytime you flash any unnoficial software. This includes any custom ROMs, Kernels, and Recoveries. Chances are, during your rooting process you installed a custom recovery such as ClockWork Mod. This means your counter is not at 0, and your system status will be that you're running unnoficial software - WE NEED TO GET RID OF THIS.

Steps:

1.1 Turn off your phone.
1.2 Press the Home, Volume Down and Power buttons together.
1.3 Press Volume Up to continue when prompted
1.4 You will now see the binary counter will have an integer other than 0. Note this value down.
1.5 Download: TriangleAway. You can do this by going to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114
1.6 Copy it to your phone's memory or SD card.
1.7 Use any file browsing software to install the apk you downloaded.
1.8 Open the application and follow the notifications shown.
1.9 Find "Reset Flash Counter". The details shown should match your binary counter that you noted down earlier.
1.10 It may also say "this information cannot be retrieved" or something of the sort - in that case you can go ahead (I had to do this) and press reset flash counter. It will now boot into it's own mode. Follow the instructions to reset.

Can I add that between steps 10 and 11, if you have a custom kernel or recovery, and a JellyBean bootloader - when the phone boots, the flash counter goes back up to to 1.
To remedy this, you can either:
1) After pressing the volume key in Triangle away, interrupt the boot up by pulling the battery. Check in download mode. If 0, move on to next step - otherwise, repeat
2) Flash an ICS Bootloader via ODIN first. ICS bootloaders are reset permanently once reset via Triangle away
3) Flash a stock recovery and kernel via ODIN so the flash counter doesn't increase once reset via Triangle away
4) Flip the entire process around. Flash a stock ROM first, root with CF Auto root. Run triangle way then use the superuser app itself to unroot.

1.11 Your counter is now reset! You can check it by repeating the first 4 steps.
2. Flash Stock Recovery
(Skip this step if you have stock recovery already)
We need to do a full wipe of the system. To do this we need to go to our recovery but OH **** we've got a custom recovery. If we go into this recovery then we'll set the binary counter back to 1 again and it'll defeat the purpose of the first step. If we, however, use a stock recovery then the counter will still stay at 0.

2.1 We need to go back to ODIN mode (where you observed your binary counter).
2.2 Turn off your phone.
2.3 Press the Home, Volume Down and Power buttons together.
2.4 Press Volume Up to continue when prompted
2.5 Download ODIN: http://stockroms.net/file/Tools/ODIN/Odin3v185.zip (this is the version I used)
2.6 Download your StockRecovery:
Stock Recovery for International Galaxy S3 GT-i9300 (This is the one I used because I'm from the UK)
Download Stock Recovery for Galaxy S3 SGH-I717/I717M (AT&T,Canadian)
Download Stock Recovery for Galaxy S3 SCH-I535 (Verizon)
Download Stock Recovery for Galaxy S3 SGH-T999 (T-Mobile)
Download Stock Recovery for Galaxy S3 SPH-L710 (Sprint)
2.7 Run ODIN. Do not touch any of the options. Only Auto Reboot should be checked.
2.8 Plug in your phone. The first COM rectangle should be yellow (like: http://gyazo.com/ad7dcd2af17a7ff6745ded7ea91eefaf ) and ODIN should recognize the phone. If this is not the case and it's not recognizing it then you need to get drivers for your phone.
2.9 Click "PDA" and select the stock recovery file you just downloaded.
2.10 Click Start.
2.11 When complete the top left will be green.
2.12 Now you have a stock recovery!!
2.13 Unplug your phone
3. Device Wipe
3.1 Go into stock recovery by holding down Home, Volume up and Power buttons together.
3.2 When you see the samsung logo, let go and you'll see it go into custom recovery.
3.3 Scroll to device wipe using the volume keys.
3.4 Press the home key to select the option, and then select yes. Once the device is wiped it will let you know.
4. Flash Official ROM
4.1 Download your official ROM here: http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-I9300
4.2 Choose the correct ROM corresponding to your country, I chose BTU since my phone was unlocked and I'm from the UK.
Please note: it is IMPORTANT that you download the correct ROM. Dial *#1234# to find your CSC (country code) and CP number which you can match up to the ROM.
4.3 It's around 800MB so it will take a while to download.
4.4 Go to ODIN mode again by
4.5 Press the Home, Volume Down and Power buttons together.
4.6 Press Volume Up to continue when prompted.
4.7 Run ODIN on your computer and connect your phone.
4.8 When it recognizes it, check "Auto Reboot" and "F.Reset Time".
4.9 Everything else should be left unchecked.
4.10 On your computer, unzip the ROM file you downloaded. It should give you something with the extension of .tar.md5
4.11 Press "PDA" on ODIN and select this file.
4.12 Everything should be as shown here: http://gyazo.com/fea7a1c8b7a7b5bb287fb0a0c70056dc
4.13 Click Start and wait for it to do it's thing. It'll take quite a few minutes.
4.14 When it's finished, you're DONE!!!!
IMPORTANT: If when rebooting, it hangs at the samsung logo for a while then perform STEP 3 (Wipe Device) and then reboot it. Should work. If not then post here and someone may help you OR you can attempt reflashing your stock ROM again.
And that's it folks I'm not very experienced with android so I won't be able to answer questions if you have any problems, this is just the steps I devised and it worked.

Can I add that between steps 10 and 11, if you have a custom kernel or recovery, and a JellyBean bootloader - when the phone boots, the flash counter goes back up to to 1.
To remedy this, you can either:
1) After pressing the volume key in Triangle away, interrupt the boot up by pulling the battery. Check in download mode. If 0, move on to next step - otherwise, repeat
2) Flash an ICS Bootloader via ODIN first. ICS bootloaders are reset permanently once reset via Triangle away
3) Flash a stock recovery and kernel via ODIN so the flash counter doesn't increase once reset via Triangle away
4) Flip the entire process around. Flash a stock ROM first, root with CF Auto root. Run triangle way then use the superuser app itself to unroot.

Can you confirm this procedure?
1)flash stock firmware with odin (for example MC2 4.1.2)
2) root + recovery
3)downgrade to XXALE8 bootloader
4) triangle away
5)another flash of stock firmware to uninstall recovery e root
It is the correct procedure?
I read about some issue in the 5) point (fail of odin in sboot.bin).....can I flash another time the stock firmware over the old bootloader?

WRONG forum this is I9300 forum or you are trying to flash wrong phone to a I9300 .

Probably to stay on the safe side bring it back to the stock bootloader first?

OP if the original post is to be of use then it needs to be locked .
Alternative is it will just turn into a question thread that has nothing to with the original guide .

i figured out a way to restore full stock
i figured it by my self, thinking, what if i boot into fastboot, will it increase binary counter? it does not! so...
1. Reset binary counter using Triangle Away.
2. Hard restart your phone ( "-" and power for 8 seconds) and instantly when it happens hold key combination for download mode ( "-" and home and power).
3. Flash stock firmware (after that counter = 0 will not be increased).
4. Factory default (required to clear "modified" status in system settings).
5. Done! Full and clean stock

Yes it does but that's a bad idea. We're all i9300 users so our advice could lead to danger.

Yep that's what i see non I9300 users find somehow this thread follow the instructions then from this forum decide to flash a rom that is not for their phone .
Foolish though maybe but enough Verizon owners have already done just that .

Return Galaxy s4 to factory default stock firmware/update/flash ROM

Fool-proof-method
1. Download and run Triangle Away to bring your phone back to Samsung Official and not "Custom" so your guaranteed to be able to update....this is if you have a custom recovery already installed or have rooted the phone before...download here
2. Download the Odin file...I believe the .zip contains the .tar file For Sprint:...here
3. Read/download how to use Odin such as installing USB Drivers, proper USB cord...etc...here...
4. Install the MF9 file you downloaded.
4. Reboot phone and done...
5. Easy way to start flashing again is to use Odin again and flash this custom recovery...be sure you find the "spr" download for Sprint ".tar file" here
6. Download and flash your ROM through the recovery...no need to root or anything...just need the ROM.
Spent some time making this post...hit the thanks button on the left if I helped you in any way.

I don't believe all the statements you make here are true. You do not have to have Samsung official to receive an update. You only have to be on a stock recovery with no changes made to any system files or have deleted system files. The only reason to use triangle away is if you are going to send your phone to Samsung for warranty work. So to simplify your methodolgy:
Download the stock MF9 tar, install it with odin, run cf-autoroot, install custom recovery(either with odin or goomanager app), and then install any mods or roms you want.
Didn't mean to rain on your parade, but you over complicated the whole process.

Go to www.sammobile.com and download the NG2.tar. Odin it and profit.

[FULL-UNROOT][HOW-TO] S4 MINI GT-i9195

Hello,
many people out there say it's impossible to do a full unroot on the S4 Mini, but I'll prove them wrong:
If you have a custom recovery like clockworkmod installed, that's obvious for a rooted phone,
before flashing you'll have to flash an original Samsung stock recovery first.
Otherwise the after-reboot process doesn't work correctly and you'll still have status "custom".
So here is what I did step-by-step:
- I startet with a rooted Samsung stock rom (XXUAMG8)
- I let SuperSU unroot the device (one of it's options), then
- I went into system/accounts/backup&restore and did the full restore - reboot
- I installed an original Samsung stock recovery with Odin - reboot
- I flashed the original Samsung stock rom (XXUAMG8) with Odin.
Afterwards you can check in DL mode the status, it's all "Official".
Additional Notes:
On my phone, when I didn't flash the samsung recovery first, the system boot time increased to up to 5(!) minutes every time (not only the first one...)

And why would I want to unroot my phone?
The warranty is void anyway. The Knox flag remains 0x1.

This how-to is about a phone with an older bootloader without knox.
So if you have a knox free bootloader, this description leads you back to full warranty conditions

I know this is an old thread and this is my first post.
I have tried doing these steps and my device still says custom I think I am using the wrong stock firmware I was on Vodafone UK firmware then rooted to Cwm 6.0.4.6 I am currently trying to unroot to receive ota update as kies doesn't work to update I did unroot with original firmware that was btu black edition I am guessing this shouldn't make a difference but if I am wrong then go ahead and laugh at me but I do need help with my phone

flash twice the firmware in odin, sometimes baseband isn't flashed

Didn't work for me either.
Starting from CM11, wanted to flash latest stock ROM with KNOX boot loader removed - downloaded my local carrier-specific firmware from Samsung updates, then proceeded to use the tar and md5 -rt tools on a Mac, failed signature. So did it in Windows using 7zip and it managed to flash. Did it twice to ensure baseband was flashed.
Flashing the stock recovery then doing the same still gives me a custom version
Anyone has any ideas on how to return to stock? I'm on non-KNOX boot loader.

I had cm 4.4.2 on my I9195 I have to re flash with odin to go back to clockwork mod then flash original firmware twice and it worked just waiting for the ota update now

It did work flashing original firmware twice however I go into recovery mode and I have a dead android with a red triangle and the words no command

It works. I got "official" status and I can download software updates, but now I get dead android with red triangle when I go recovery mode with this message:

Same here. I've got problems with that Android Stock recovery file. After flashing it, when I tried to go into recovery mode, the dead android logo appeared. However if I reflash CWM everything goes ok. Where can I find another stock android recovery file?, it seems that this one only works for some specific sort of models. Mine is: GT-i9195L. (the "L" doesn't really matter).

[Q] boot failure, logo stuck.

Hey guys, i will go direct into topic
i have note 2 n7100
1- i made a factory reset from settings menu on phone then the mobile didn't load again (stuck into logo)
2- tried all recovery ROM with all methods and no luck.
3- Downloaded and installed official ROM from SAMMOBILE and the mobile loaded and worked.
4- Installed a custom ROM.
5- Made a wipe to go back for the official ROM again and starting from here everything went bad..
my mobile didn't accept any ROMS, recovery or anything.
just rebooted and stuck on Samsung logo
i tried many things for 3 days but no luck.
Please HELP.

i know that wiping from recovery mode might solve the problem ,, but i don't have access to recovery mode. i have access to download mode. and sure i tried MANY times to flash recovery roms with ODIN and no luck.

CWM is a recovery and i said that all of recovery roms were failed.

probably you have enabled knox, just flash official firmware again

Have you tried booting into recovery and performing a full data wipe from there? Including (internal) SDCard?

There's no recovery enabled
i tried to flash (philz , twrp2 and cmw 2 ) none of them is booting.

So we know what bootloader you have, what does it say (in the top left) when you're in download mode?

So you're on a 4.3+ bootloader, I haven't looked into that much - I'm assuming you can downgrade and have a custom recovery, but I'm not sure on the procedure. (Although i imagine Knox Warranty is irreversible - not like that matters because you would simply say: "I've got know idea what that [KNOX] is" and "My phone must have come like that."
It would not be the first time someone has opened a phone to find the software in a peculiar state!)
Either way you should be able to install and 4.3 stock rom and get stock recovery back.
Perhaps it's your odin and OS setup. Try flashing a few different versions of recovery, on different PCs*, with different cables and different versions of odin. If that doesnt work try the same with different stock ROMs. It's what I'd try whilst seeking more expert advice.
*if on Win7 try running odin 'as Windows XP'

but can you please tell me more about that downgrading thing?

I'm not too sure I'm afraid.
My objective, if I were you, get a custom recovery working and install Wamrick's NC3 - stock kernel will work for you as your bootloader is 4.3 and I don't think you can downgrade that due to Knox.

still.. i don't know how to make the Custom recovery work! as you see in the boot loader i tried to flash 12 times and nothing happened.

And you've tried flashing a full stock 4.3 rom from Sammobile right? Running odin as win XP (if on 7)
