Hello!
Humm, so i thought id ask something about what you can and can't do with usb on nexus 7. To start off with, i've built a simple rig on my car for this tablet, to work as multimedia interface. And it works awesome. The one thing that bugs me, is that the sound quality from the 3,5mm headphone jack going into my car stereo auxiliary input, isn't as good as the USB input on my car stereo.
This leads to the actual question, would it be even close to possible, to have a "virtual" .mp3 file or something like this, "mounted" as the usb? Like, when you plug the usb cord between car audio usb <--> nexus 7, the car audio would think the device has only one track, but that would be like a live stream of the tablets sound interface? I have absolutely no experience in anykind of coding and thus im here to ask you. I might be way out of boundaries on what can be done, you tell me!
Bump!
Am i alone with this matter? Please move this thread if you think it would get better attention somewhere else! :victory:
Go here and read the progress on adding external usb dac to the nexus.

Is it possible to get audio playing over the USB port from the HD2?
With the iPhones, the audio market have a line out dock which takes the proprietory plug the iPhone uses to charge and sync and outputs to a 3.5mm jack. This bypasses the internal amplification circuitry so that you can use an external amplifier for a better signal to your earphones/headphones/speakers of choice.
I was wondering if it was possible to do this with the HTC HD2.
Can anyone offer any insight?
I'm no expert however from what I know, I think the iPhones dock connector has more than just regular USB connections inside. It may have some audio connections and possibly even a video connection. So I'm guessing the audio actually gets sent through that rather than via USB.
However, I imagine that you could send audio via USB but at a guess I think it might require a processor is some description at the other end to take the audio and send it to the speakers.
This may be totally in the wrong direction but I believe it is probably along these lines

It's most certainly a question for those of the XDA Community who know the ins and outs of the USB port and what it can actually do.
I'd love to think that it is possible. Whilst I'm happy with the output of the HD2 sound quality-wise, the mere thought that it 'could' be better intrigues me.
Can anyone help explain if it can be done, how it can be done or if it can't be done, why it can't be done?
Just to get a bit more info, where were you thinking the USB audio would be used? Like through a PC and then to it's speakers, or do you have some MicroUSB audio dock thing? I imagine whether it is possible or not depends on where you want the audio to go to.
I imagine if it was through a PC then it would be a matter of software, and therefore be possible. But I don't know about a dock situation.

From the HD2's USB port into a portable amplifier (3.5mm jack) then onto a pair of IEM's.
I guess it is also plausible that it could go from the HD2's USB port to a USB DAC/Amp then out onto a pair of IEM's but that kind of DAC/Amp doesn't come cheaply and then there's a whole driver issue to contend with, possibly.
This is strictly to improve audio in a portable capacity, as iPhone users seem to have been able to do for quite some time.
Alright then, beyond my scope mate sorry we need other developers to check this out I think.
Anyone?

Thanks Johnathon.
Hopefully someone else will reply to this. Plenty of views but no chatter.
Yeah, I'm sure you will find someone though! It is the HD2 section after all more than enough devs in these parts

I do not think it would be, like the DAC isn't it? why not just use the Bluetooth A2DP?

I do not understand your question and do not see how Bluetooth A2DP would help at all.
Final bump
I know that CyanogenMod9 allows audio out over usb on some phones.
I'm really interested to know too so have asked the Q in the android forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22920882#post22920882
Fingers crossed...

There are many more people interested then it shows here.
I know the following must be in place before USB class audio will work:
ALSA drivers in the kernel
USB host
USB OTG
and if all of that is in, then in theory USB audio should work.
Jelly Bean makes this official, which is nice. but many of us still use CM7, especially Tyween Typhoons, for stability, and it would be awesum if it worked in there, although to be honest I am waiting for the final CM7.2 before I test again.
Is it possible to reroute the headphone jack via software so it behaves as line in?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I would think it is possible because there are adapters that plug into the headphone jack that people use to charge credit cards.

Ummm, doesn't the current setup support that already?
This one for instance,
http://www.thinkdroidxaccessories.com/motorola-droid-x-mb810-wired-headsets-3117.html
seems to be Mono sound + Mic; but I believe the Dx supports Stereo sound + Mic if you have the right Plug/cables.
Should just be a matter of making/finding the correct cable to work as a line in.
A little more information on what you are looking to do would be more helpful, recording from a wired input rather than built in microphones? Use your phone as a amplifier/speaker?
Well, I've been playin with 4-tracks lite and thought how nice it would be to be able to record some loops from another device. Then I got to thinkin about midi I/O as well thru the hdmi port or maybe the power port (hadn't asked that question yet
..thought I'd start small). Stereo isn't really necessary ...mono with panning is fine. I was toying with the concept of developing a nicely appointed music workstation app.
I have these brilliant ideas that turn into silly ideas after a nights sleep and the realization that software development will consume all my songwriter /production time. So thanks for the the tips...I was not aware of the mic portion of the hheadset...obviously proof of concept.

I know there was a workaround to get USB audio to work with the Nexus 7, but would this work with the N4 as well?
Potentially, but we'll need a kernel that supports it first. So I wouldn't expect anything for a few weeks at best.

I'm hoping it will at least be compatible with the E17.
Any word on this yet?
/me chomps at the bit
Really curious about the plausibility of using my iBasso D-Zero with my N4, will donate well for a solution!
Could someone please test this app with a USB DAC? I would really like to know if it works with the N4. It is supposed to provide USB DAC support without using custom kernels. I dont have a DAC right now unfortunately...

In the description, it states that it will not play audio from other programs. So it's pretty much useless for all other purposes other then playing recordings from the program.
I'm just looking for a way to hook up my N4 by USB to my car's AUX input. Any suggestions?
Well, the idea is pretty neat, I like it.
But really, the s4 chip does not have really impressing SQ.
Better buy a FiiO USB DAC, wich is only 100$ and gives you really nice quality.
Though, using a galaxy s1 i9000 and it's wolfson chip as USB DAC would be really really nice...
Rather than ask 2 separate questions I'll put both in this.
First off, I'm gonna be getting an external HD to copy my music from my laptop which I'll be selling, I assume the Nexus works fine with an External HD,can someone confirm they use one with the Nexus and there are no problems.
Secondly, my Galaxy S3 earphones don't really fit the Nexus too good and the sound is bad whereas the sound on the S3 is fine, is there a specific type of earphones I need for the Nexus?
Cheers

As you said anyone I thought I'd chime in.
1. I used to my N7 with a multitude of external HDs up to 1TB, some requiring external power, some not and its always worked for me until the updating to 4.2 that is, now otg USB mounting has become complex. So as far as my experience goes is as long as you have not updated you should be able to use the HD without issues all you will need is a mounting application like StickMount or USB OTG Helper.
2. I use standard 3.5mm Philips headphones and they seem to work. Sorry not much help I know.

Thanks mate :good:
No plans on updating to thje nightmare that is 4.2, never read so many bad reports about any update as i have this.
Until the 4.2 update has left me with onboard speaker only, I was enjoying my Samsung issued buds despite the insertion effort. J5M JBuds are also a nice fit.
I have CM10 installed on mine and I have used it with a 2TB powered hard drive (formatted as NTFS) as well as a 64GB USB thumb drive (formatted as FAT32). As stated, there are apps that allow mounting USB drives. Or you can flash a custom kernel and/or CM10 to enable it. It doesn't work out of the box though.
I have used a few different headphone sets with mine and not had any issues. If the S3 headphones don't fit well then maybe the connections are not lining up properly inside the plug, which might lead to some funny audio quality I imagine. You might need to buy some new ones.
External hd is fine, but I have noticed some kernels make it go weird with my Seagate external, I assume that's because it's not getting enough power, it will run for a bit then stop then start.
I currently have a set of turtle beach m3 headphones, they're fantastic.

The one thing no one has mentioned is that you really have give the headphone jack a good shove to get it seated properly.
That usually fixes headphone/earbud audio issues.

Hy guys!
I just found a jack to compozit cable in my cabinet. It has a Jack father and an RCA (red-white-yellow) father. I have got a pic, but Im new in here, so I cant link...
So, I just wondering, can we use this cable to connect the N7 to a TV?
I know, at the moment we can't, but why? Because the hardware limitation, or the android doesn't support this feature?

As far as I know, you'd just be transporting the audio if you were to plug it into any device. You'd have to have an extra adapter to port the video through the yellow composite video cable.
Though people have been known to make some wicked little mods, so you never know these days.
Nexus 7 does not have the hardware capability.

You could always use an MHL adapter to output to a TV, that is if the Nexus 7 supports that method. I've never tried it.

Ah, well that's disappointing. I never looked into it before, but now I know. =P
Thats awkward. So If we want to connent the tablet to a television, we must use some wifi app, and the TV must be a smart one...
Or can We take advantage of pogo-jack? I never seen before this kind of plug, so I dont know, what it can do.
