It's upgrade time!! - Xperia Play General

Xperia Z.
All the way.

I can't speak for you, but after my bitter xperience (pun intended) with Xperia P, I'd say ANYTHING BUT the Xperia line.
I was really disappointed with Xperia P and since then I've lost interest in anything starting with the word Xperia.
Except, of course, for Xperia Play which was made by a different company - Sony Ericsson.
EDIT: Oh, and I'd defo pick either a Razr or a Nexus if given the choice.

to be honest , i'm waiting for a new phone with a gamepad ! ( i hope someday samsung do that ... ) cause xperia Z,p,s,U ... and galaxy s2 , s3... are just a phone .
i can't do anything without a dedicated gamepad ...

I'm going for the Galaxy Note III (when it will come out), such a bad-ass screen
Though I would've by far preferred an Xperia Play 2, sadly such a possibility (if it ever happens) won't be for soon.

He's on Verizon, and they don't sell Xperia phones unfortunately. He'd have to go and buy one from SE if wanted it.
I chose the Galaxy SIII, and it's pretty nice. I've heard bad things about both the Droid DNA and the Nexus 4, so I chose something else. From what I remember, they both had hardware issues. The Nexus 4's glass backing will break easily, and the DNA... I don't remember what was wrong with it.

Go with Samsung. The dev support is top notch. Plus I'm not sure about the rest of the Xperia line but flashing kernels and roms on pretty much any phone other than the Xperia Play has been so much easier since it can all be done through recovery. Keep the Play for emulators and stuff though. That gamepad is hard to give up even for a nicer screen.

I buy phones out right, and then go on a sim-only contract.
Having phones as part of the contract ends up costing a fortune in the long run.
My contract currently is 350 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited internet. All for £7.80 a month from T-Mobile.
You'd never get anything even remotely close to that if a good phone was thrown in as well. ><

Not the xperia ion lol dont get it its so buggy jellybean should fix that hopefully

Motorola locks the bootloader on their phones, which in turn kills dev support. Seeing my friend go past 2 days without a charge on his MAXX makes me jealous though.

Sure, they release their kernel sources pretty quickly, but their dev support isn't the best, for one they still haven't given us the Exynos Sources, So CM10.1 speed isn't the best, not by a long shot, I would say Google gives the best support, end of, if you want good dev support, Nexus 4, if you want a device with almost everything thats brilliant, Galaxy S3 (Camera, Screen, size, design, etc).

Galaxy Nexus. Dev support is awesome. Razr M /HD has very little dev support.
EDIT
Sorry, forgot that they don't sell Galaxy Nexus anymore. So Galaxy S3 or wait for the S4

Thanks for all the insight. I decided on the RAZR M. Seems to be a pretty solid device. Actually the first phone I've had that I didn't want to root for one reason or another inside of the 1st hour of using it. I'm sure that will change down the road The S3 S4 are just too big for my liking. Wish the Galaxy Nexus was still available and there would have been no question.

In my opinion the phone is hideous, was thinking to upgrade but no way in hell am i doing that....
i got a feeling Samsung designed this too look like sh*t, to sell the galaxys2 and save customers for their new stock coming soon. This looks like some cheap Chinese knockoff. But the sad fact is they look a lot better...
what do you guys think.
EDIT...
NEW pictures released look a lot better still not feeling the soft key icons as much though....

The prime was too deep into development when google bought Motorola for them to just abandon the project. If there is going to be another nexus after the prime then chances are it will be done by Motorola.

According to Google (whether or not you want to believe it is another story), the Nexus phones will still be a contest for developers. Just because Google owns Motorola doesn't (supposedly) guarantee that Motorola will be the exclusive Nexus manufacturer.
I really hope this is true, because I am sure this is a major thing manufacturers push for. They may not sell as well as some of the other phones out there, but they get a ton of clout and the developers are very quick to stand behind them. Anything that challenges companies to try to one-up each other is a great thing in my book. That is what drives innovation.
Pictures don't always do an item justice
The N1 is no looker when seeing it online--which i am reminded of everytime I download MIUI from their Rom page
But, in my hand, it looks and feels great-------
i always thought the N1 looked better in photos, in hand the frame is too big and the colour is not to my liking, the images show a more darker black/brown
IMO, the supposed design look hideous but i like the software though, colorful, eye catching definitely except for the damn home menu and back buttons. WHERE IS THE F*ING SEARCH BUTTON! >.< i know it's weird but i am one of a few people who uses it a alot. on my n1 the search buttons serves as quick autorotate on/off and search function as well. Another biggest thing, doesnt that phone in the photo looks 4:3 rather than 16:9 to you guys?
I no longer think Nexus is ugly. The new picture shows aluminium type of edge around the phone. The first leak of the pics prob preliminary. I likes the new pics by modoco.

Engadget says its on the samsung website if you simply search for it. No specs yet. Just 2 and a half more hours till the specs are released >

Have a look at my optimus one... You may even notice some, just a bit, dust under the screen... this after one month...

I'm also considering the HTC One S... but I will not be purchasing the grey/blue accent version. I've heard that the One S might be released in black/red accents later, likely related to the chipping that occurred to the international version with this MAO treatment. If anyone has any real news regarding the release of this version on US T-Mobile, please post here or start a thread... I follow TmoNews.com, but haven't read anything definitive yet.
Great read; only thing I missed was your reaction to the speed boost vs G2? What is your impression?
Thank you for mentioning that HTC should not name their web browser "Internet". Pet peeve of mine! There is an AOKP setting (I think it's AOKP?) that lets you use the volume up/down key when you have the IME keyboard out to move back/forward over the text input line. When that comes to your One S it should help ease backing up a few characters since you now lack a trackpad.
Your review speaks similarly to what mine would, I'm sure. Some of the reasons you speak of (and obviously, no QWERTY) are the reasons I am not buying one of these new flagship phones. IF there is a QWERTY and it completely blows or is locked down then I'll be considering moving to a non-qwerty phone, but let's be realistic here. New hardware and thinness do not matter. Those aren't new features, they're expected with new devices and aren't something that will add sway to me purchasing the device.
I think the SIII is pretty hideous, personally, and while I have a Samsung TV, I'm not the biggest fan of their mobile device build quality. That said, some of the features in the SIII are pretty badass. I dunno if I'd enable that feature that creepily detects my eyes, but I do dig the wireless charging amongst other things.
People are so blown away by the One S/X when they don't seem to realize that all new [flagship] devices coming out this year will have similar hardware.. so if that's the case, then why not wait a few months and see what else is announced? I guess I'm just old fashioned and tend to wait to see what the user reaction is to new devices, as well as the user/dev community, etc. Because those things matter!

This thread made me realize that the one series are built in batteries.
Its so nice when your phone is dying and it takes only a few second to change the battery and go.
In school, I hate people saying "oh, dont play with my iphone too much, I need battery for the ride home".

BEFORE YOU BUY THE PHOTON (Nexus Slider)...

So, here we all are. Looking for the next big slider phone to move to. The Photon comes along and while some specs are great, overall most people hate the fact that the SIM is locked and that the battery is not removable. Some of us, maybe all, would probably settle for it, because the idea is that another slider will not come for a long period of time. HOWEVER, I just unearthed this article and honestly, I would recommend giving it a month before we all jump ship and buy into the Photon, if that is your plan at least.
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/05/01/google-patent-application-hints-at-nexus-slider/
Although this is NOT a confirmation, it is still in the realm of possibility. It is worth waiting for, before we lock ourselves onto the Photon for 2 years.
Any thoughts/comments/info?
There is some truth to Google bringing out a Nexus slider soon. Google hired the G1 designer duo, they also came up with the design for the Xbox360.
NICE!!!!!! I just sprouted a tremendous woody!!!!
Highly doubtful. I wouldn't hold my breathe. The only logical choice right now for keyboard lovers is the photon. Especially since Motorola released something similar to HTCdev to unlock the boot loader.

My thinking on the Q, is will there be development, more to the point, will it get picked up by CM
A Nexus device will get dev support almost by default.
But the Epic taught me to be careful about my choice in phones, as lack of great development can drop a phone from awesome, to dam, wish I could get that mod.
Those who got the Epic on release day, waited for CM acceptance on the Epic, will understand why I'm a bit gun shy about one-off devices
This Epic post brought to you via Tapatalk 2 and CM9

Its all about they keyboard layout. It doesn't match up with something that would create ease of use. This looks like a prototype for a Phablet and or Tablet.

How would you describe the GN2?

Not a smartphone, not a tablet, ...the future of pen and paper.
The modern day filofax?
It obliterates the competition.
To qualify, been a htc fanboi since spv. Loved how the wife's iphone keyboard never makes a spelling mistake, despaired how htc keyboard was useless. Blown away how everything just worked with the wife's ipad 3, unlike cheap android tablets. This leads me to this ultralight technological revelation, the Note 2. I've never used anything that you can write with a pen, that is so accurate. In business we still write so much on paper, this really feels like the future. Okay, I admit I'm blown away by it. And I never liked samsung mobli's before.
One criticism... this god awful cheap and nasty plastic chrome ring around the phone. Hellloo? 550 quid, give us some metal. The silver back of the iphone 5 is soo blinging tasty. But if metal adds weight, leave it off, the lightness of this device will make your jaw drop.
Happy rant over. Lol

Whenever some says, 'is that your phone?' I always say, "yes. It's more of a pocket tablet though".
My own rant: current media definitions of phone/tablet/phablet are STUPID.
Since when does something suddenly become 'something else' if it is .1 inches wider?
Does that happen with any other piece of technology?
- Frank
I would describe it as the new Jesus Phone!
its a mini tablet, or a big smartphone. or phablet

I just received my Note 2. I purchased it to replace my 10.1" tablet and I couldn't be more pleased with it. My ASUS TF700 & kbd dock go up on eBay today - I won't miss hauling it around.
I tend to think of the Note 2 as a mini tablet more than a phone but I'm hoping that perception changes a bit as I carry it the next month or two. If I can see using it as my phone and tablet in one device I'll be purchasing the T-Mobile branded version with my upgrade when the Note 2 is released through T-Mobile. My .16 year old son really wants one of these things as a replacement for his WiFi Ipad 2 (we're not providing him with data for his phone - he'll need a job for that) so I'll trade him my international Note 2 for his Ipad if I doget the T-Mobile version.
Maybe it's a phablet. Time will tell.
GN2 is A Phone or Tablet with Magical stick (Jadu Ki Chadi).....
The phone wich can wash clothes...gives cool air from speakers..sends food and other things via attachment or bluetooth....and entertain you like GF.....
In short it can replace WiFe as well...LoL....:banghead::banghead:

SGN2 vs HTC J Butterfly

...has arrived falks
This will replace my note since no cm support
http://mobile.theverge.com/2012/10/...nning-5-inch-1080p-j-butterfly-phone-in-japan
It's presuming a lot that this will receive better support, and who knows what form it shows up as in the U.S. Current rumors are mostly about a Verizon only device...so that'll be locked down.
I am interested though, since I'm on Verizon...will be waiting for both to come out and give it a look. Hard choice.

This will only come out in japan. And will probably recieve no cm support because of only chinese limit, and HTC unsupportive.
And stop making "faults of GN2" "why not to buy a GN2" "this phone kills note 2" threads! If you dont want to buy a Note 2, dont! These pointless threads are superflous nowadays :/ just go back to your own forum and contribute, and help, but dont tell people who own a Note II why not to buy a Note.
Thanks!
Thing 1: note2 has cm support..
Thing 2: its just a hoax of htc..full hd screen on 5inch screen is ridiculous and has no point of that high ppi as a human eye cant detect it..
Just 2000mah battery on this mammoth of a device u better be used to see it switched off most of the time..coz it cant and wont last more than 3hrs screen time..
And samsung now has the best support in d world..
I had one x for last 6 months and got 3 updates..
I have gn2 since a week and I got 3 updates already..
And be ready to wait 2 months atleast before htc releases its kernel source code after an update..
All d best with ur sh!tty switched off brick beauty..

Don't get me wrong. I live my gn2 , love it
Thing 1, Where can i get cm for it?
Been let down sooo many times by HTC, that I am very reluctant to go back....despite its 5 inch screen. There is no way the 2200mah battery on their new 5 inch screen phone will be adequate for it's screen size and processor. To me, Note 2 got it right to increase battery size from Note 1.
HTC for me means poor / v. limited updates/support and all too often, poor battery. Been there with HTC Hero and Diamond. Touch Pro 2 was only bearable one in terms of battery. HTC Flyer 's official update to Honeycomb completely disabled it's touch sensitive buttons. I love the software and build of HTC products, but that is about it.

Sure. The ROM zip link is the same in both yours and mine.
So you can cross "no CM support" off the list of complaints, I guess.
Ill stick with my note 2, never cared for CM anyway.

you make me laugh man...htc thats a big joke
Was waiting for this phone since March when Toshiba announced their 5" 1080p panel, but seeing as how there's a smaller battery and lacks the S-Pen, making this just a really large high-res screen, I think i'll still go with the note 2, although I wish the note 2 used a 5.5" 1080p panel, but at this point, the res is just getting ridiculous (coming from a guy who used to have a Vaio Z... two years before 1080p 13" laptops were standard)
"The Battery Killer ..."
Fixed that for you
Seing how the one x's battery already was total sh!t I presume that the J owners will count their screen-on-time on nanoseconds

hmm like always, htc likes to make owners charge battery non stop....full hd resolution 5" screen with 2040mah battery? rofl... and note 2 software+spen the best....
