Hey guys, I've got my nexus 4 on order and I'm worried about the low volume people have been talking about. How have you guys fixed that. Is there a decent fix because I use my phone for music quite a bit. The nexus 4 will be my only phone so it kind of needs to be good for music.
I am using this mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2025486
The sound quality is really great and the volume also slightly increased. Now it's actually decent on max. volume.

Hi there guys.
First of all apologies if this post will cause any confusion or if someone has asked before.
The volume output on nexus 4 make me feel like I'm actually deaf because of its LOW VOLUME.
Is there any volume boost apps such as the ones used on GNEX?

Just flash this equalizer and turn up the equalizer settings and you will get louder sounds.

Compared to the GNex, I thought the N4 was super loud! lol
The equalizer is more of a software side fix. I think the op is referring to something that actually sets the hardware output higher similar to what the voodoo apps do. This results in a cleaner non distorted sound compared to just boosting eq levels.
Volume+?

Speaker is actually loud. Tried different sets of top ear pieces and headphones and it was real low.
The DSP manager prescribed above helped tho.

voodoo works because the inbuilt AMP can be controlled on a wolfson; other software that is universal on all hardware audio solutions like volume+ and others more than likely just adjusts gain.
the DSP manager fix is probably the best all round software based solution as it can be boosted via EQ ( not great cause it can cause clipping), gain adjustments and DRC.
software solutions are not ideal however and i would suggest an external portable amp if your headphones require a hifi level power source, but for most portable gear (Even high end) the N4 is perfectly fine.
The output of the speaker is fine but I definitely notice the volume is lower with headphones then the Gnex. I personally don't like DSP etc as it always makes things sound distorted. The NS with Voodoo was like the best ever sound I got on my headphones.

coming from a galaxy S II the N4 volume seems much lower for certain things. The in call volume is louder however things like notifications seem lower even at the highest level. Not stoked about it.
Haven't tried it but saw this:

Temporary fix for Low Volume
I just received my Nexus a few days ago, and noticed the low volume.THe speakerphone is ok, but music and youtube a bit low. It's funny how the "professional" reviewers say the speaker is loud.
Anyway, I found a temporary fix for the music volume, until Google gets off their a__es and fixes the problem.Download Player Pro Trial from the Play Store.
On the effects menu, crank up the bass and volume knobs ,leave the EQ off. When you turn on the reverb button the volume bumps up a few notches. It works on headphone and speaker volume and it's a nice music player too.I think the full version is 5 bucks.
i think this paid $1 app works, even on franco kernel to increase speaker volume, in my bathroom, music is pretty loud!
its made for faux kernels

I like this app better, It works with a large number of kernels.. even stock
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=aperture.ezekeel.experiencepro
Its been working well for me, also has the added ability to touchwake, for those times when the screen times out.
edit: It will boost speaker and headphones volume. You can also adjust mic gain and a number of other cool shizz. Seriously Check it out

Since voodoo isn't compatible with the N4 how do I boost the volume?
Is there something similar to voodoo sound?

The nexus louder audio mod shown in that thread doesn't work. It just adds an app and changes some equaliser settings and generally makes the sound quality a lot worse.
What we need is something at kernel level to simply increase the volume of the phone like they did on the sgs3.
I wish kernel and ROM Devs would focus on this issue a.little bit because speed and battery life and other placebos aren't the only things people care about. The audio on this phone is Far far too quiet although it is good quality.

I feel that the audio coming out on the N4 is much quieter than on any of my previous devices. If you have an N7, you can test this out by setting both devices to the loudest volume setting, setting them to play the same song, and then play the first song while plugged in to your car, then unplug the first device and plug in the second device and play the same song. I have to crank up my car volume double do get the same sound quality. Its really annoying. Is there a fix somewhere that just lets you boost the volume like changing something in the system? I like the native equalizer fine, but the sound is so quiet when plugged into a headphone jack!!
Does anyone else notice how soft the output on the headphone jack is? I always plugged my old phone in to my stereo to play music in my car and you could turn it up all the way and have it become distorted or just keep it at a nice loud volume. With the Nexus 4 I'll turn the phone volume and stereo volume all the way up and it's still really really quiet. Why is this? Are there any good mods that can help with this?

I guess I didn't search
Thanks for pointing me there, I never look in themes and apps sub forum so that's probably why I haven't seen it lol.
I have to dispute the "softest ever" title. I had an LG G2x before the N4, and when I plugged in the N4, I had to turn the volume down a bit. It wasn't a huge difference, and it's still a bit too quiet, but its definitely louder than the G2x was.
I too can say the volume is on the low side.... Same for my Nexus 7...

I'm really starting to notice that my headset volume maximum is very low. When I connect my headphones the sound is fair, but once I connect it to speakers the volume is incredibly low. Its barely noticeable if I'm not close to it. I've tried various different sound speaker systems and car stereos and the volume is bad unless I turn it all the way up. Ive even tried other phones such as the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 and their volume have a much higher maximum. I though it was maybe Viper4Android music effects on my phone but even when its off the difference is barely noticeable in terms of max volume. Is anyone else having the problem? And is there a way to fix it? I'm currently running Carbon v18 with the Matrix+ Kernel and Viper4Android

I'm not going to lie. Coming from an iPhone and a Galaxy S6 (my Moto G is sort of an interim phone while I sell those two to afford new stuff this fall), I expected the Moto G to sound considerably worse. And yeah, it's not quite as good. But it's certainly far from the worst I've had and I've only owned expensive devices in the past. The bass is punchy, the treble is fairly decent, and the volume levels aren't awful (although I may increase mixer_paths at some point to gain a couple levels). I've actually been listening through fairly decent earbuds for the past 40 minutes or so to various types of music (alternative, acoustic, heavy stuff, rap) and I could definitely live with this sound quality if I had to.
It is pretty damn amazing what ~$200 buys you today.
I've noticed this too! Big upgrade from my n4, no more distortion!
the earphones are 'good' for the price ... cant expect more at this price point
My ear is in a full moon party.
Yeah, this is awesome.
I'm using CM12.1 With a Dolby Atmis and Jet player.
After a hour to configure the player, my brain explode with the results.
Quality-wise, yes...very good. Volume-wise, I'd say it's extremely subpar. It's easily the lowest volume of any device I've ever had. Speaker volume is phenomenal...headphone volume is god awful!!! And I'm comparing this to my Nexus 4, just as the OP says.
You can mention the speaker which gives a quite punchy sound compared to many phones from this category which are mostly ear hurting with middle and high frequencies only...
If anyone's looking for a little boost without messing with viper, etc, I made a mixer_paths.xml mod here

I'm getting the same thing. The audio through my IEMs (Hifiman RE-400 for active/gym stuff and Yamaha EPH-100 for normal listening) is freakin' excellent, but the volume is indeed low.

The mod thread I linked above makes headphone volume LOUD!!! It can go a few notches higher, but I think it sounds great, personally...it also boosts speaker volume pretty much to its limit. It may get slightly distorted occasionally, but it's definitely a good bit louder, as well!
Motorola has done an excellent job. the sound is excellent. the happy moment. :highfive:
Walkman
You can install Walkman to get the best out of the earphones.
