[Q] can't get into custom recovery

hi im new to the whole nexus 7 scene just got it today and its also my first nexus device. came from a highly locked down dx2 then to htc and now im trying this. i used the nexus root toolkit v1.5.5 to unlock and root and flash custom recovery. but when i hold power down+volume down i get into the boot loader and i choose recovery then GOOGLE splash screen comes up and it does absolutly nothing while no usb chord plugged in. with usb chord it stays at the google splash screen for but a moment then just boots into android.
i tried the advance utilities and flash the cwm that way but same results. im still on 4.1.0 jrn84d. what am i doing wrong? i don't fully understand adb so if there is quite litteraly a step by step please give me a link or write it down if no such link exists. my last hdd that had adb all setup and ready crashed so its not setup and i was talking to someone who helped me get it going. all i know is i need to use command prompt but getting it into adb and then using it to push and get into cwm i have no clue.
i would love to make a nandroid and then install a kernal to gget the full power out of this thing. it is unlocked and rooted already.

They using ROM Manager app to install CWM and also boot into recovery. Will work for sure as long as you're rooted.

If you follow the steps correctly, it should have a custom recovery installed. check if your rom is actually rooted.

EDIT: What the hell are you doing on 4.1.0? I thought factory stock was 4.1.1.

Get GooManager from the play store. It can download and install TWRP recovery which I prefer. GooManager will let you reboot into recovery too.

lol i dunno just came with it. its the 16gb version dunno why it came with 4.1.0 but it did. and when i installed rom manager i flashed cwm with that then choose to boot into recover that way and it worked. i am unlocked and rooted and now have a nandroid. have yet to try going to cwm with power+volume down being pressed i will give it a shot later on and make another nandroid before i accept the update im being propted for.

There was a bug that required the N7 to be connected to a PC-USB connection before it would work. They didn't fix the bug until 4.1.2.
Your best bet, if you can boot into Android, is to download a Reboot-to-Recovery app or use CWM or GooManager to reset into recovery. If you are boot looping, throw a USB connection into the mix when trying to do it. I believe it is VolDown+Power+USB connection. Drivers may also be a factor.

Thanks for the reply. I finally updated it. Had to do three updates though. First to 4.1.1 then to 4.1.2 and then to 4.2. I have a nandroid at 4.1.0 so if I need to do anything I'm just going back. I used ota root keeper and the cwm that's from rom manager allows you to choose to protect your custom recovery as well as root. But I don't know if that was working in tandem with ota root keeper since I made sure to back it up first before I did anything.

How do I manually re-root 4.3 and update SU binaries?

I was rooted on 4.2.2 and checked for the system update for 4.3. It was there so I got really excited and installed it immediately, without writing a thread about it, making sure I'm not doing something wrong. Well, I was.
It updated to 4.3 and it works fine, but I can't access TWRP (I get an opened Android with a red X over it). Also, when I go into SU, I get a message saying "There is no SU binary installed. ... If you've just upgraded to 4.3, you need to manually re root your device."
How do I do this? Thanks.

Toolkits cannot flash the recovery on Android 4.3 so you have to download the recovery image and flash the recovery image using "fastboot flash recovery [Replace_this_with_image_name]" and enter while your Nexus 4 is on bootloader mode to flash the recovery properly.
Now you need to transfer the SuperSU v1.51 zip file to the root of your internal storage and install it via TWRP recovery and then you are fully rooted without any TB restore issues or anything like that.

I rooted and unlocked my device with a Toolkit but the problem is that you do not know what is exactly going on since you cannot see the commands.
You have to get the Android SDK for this one, I already have it all in a zip file but that is on my laptop and I will be working on my phone today by installing PA.
One you get the SDK you have to go into the SDK manager and download/update the ADB tools, after that open the CMD in the folder which says "Platform-tools" and type the command from there.
Has for the image you have to put it in platform-tools has well for this to work:

Flashed kit kat rom, no recovery.

I flashed a kit kat ROM earlier to play around on, and when I was rebooting I accidentally hit the wrong button in cwm to not reflash recovery. Now I don't have recovery anymore, and I don't have access to a computer so I can flash the PA version of Kit Kat. ROM manager will not flash recovery for me. Is there anything I can do to get recovery without a computer?

you can flash the twrp recovery via the goo manager app.

Do you think flashing recovery through adb would work getting recovery?

well, if you have access to a computer use fastboot. you can probably flash via adb as well.

I wont have access to a computer for a few hours but I'm thinking that's my best bet, as I don't have root

you don't need root to fastboot either, you just need to boot into the bootloader. of course, and have the drivers installed in the computer. same for adb.

From the looks of it, my computer wont recognize fastboot commands in either OSX or Windows. I've installed the necessary files on both OS's and still nothing.

Well I was able to "flash" it, but it didn't actually flash. Still the dead android with the red triangle.
EDIT: I can get to the menu by pressing power+volume up. is there anything I can do there to help?

Did you try flashing a recovery from Recovery Tools aplication?
You will find it in Play store.

I was in the same situation you were.
Do these things:
1. Install the drivers for ur N4.i used Wug's toolkit ONLY TO INSTALL THE DRIVERS.
2. Next set up your fastboot.
3. Download the the latest CWM recovery (i think it was 6.0.4.3 touch).
4. "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
5. Voila! U got your recovery back.
6. (optional) Download the SuperSU 1.65 version and flash it via recovery.

I've tried that. When after I flash in fastboot and hit start in the bootloader, it starts into android and not into recovery. Should I click recovery instead of start?

Well one would assume clicking on recovery would send the phone into recovery, instead of start. PS. When you see the Android with red icon, you are looking at the stock recovery itself, so no, you do have (stock) recovery on your phone.

I tried that, and it worked. However, the only thing I can flash is my backup. Attempting to flash a different rom, like the 4.4 PA doesn't flash it, just leaves that same 4.4 rom.

Going from 4.2.2 to 4.4.2

Hi there, I'm currently rooted with 4.2.2 and I want to upgrade to the latest which I believe is 4.4.2, after a brief check I don't see the toolkits supporting this so can someone give me a clue on what to do? Is it upgrade to 4.3 then 4.4 and finally 4.4.2 or can I just jump from my current to 4.4.2?

If your on stock ROM and kernel and recovery just check for updates under about tablet system updates. If your running a custom ROM or kernel then you'll want to get to stock first. Also you can just download the factory image and adb flash it. Just search how to install 4.4,2 factory image with adb on nexus 10. There's plenty of guides.

I want to remain rooted though, also I'm trying to use the system update but it says restarting in 10, counts down then doesn't restart.
Since I want to remain rooted but just upgrade to 4.4.2 what can I do? I can't find an appropriate video.

Just update and root again. It takes a minute using one of the toolkits. Or you can just flash the super su zip which is even quicker if you have a custom recovery. Either way it's easy and quick

I can't use system updates, it won't restart after counting down from 10 it just hangs there. I also don't think the toolkits have 4.4.2, I'm pretty sure I downloaded the right files, I just don't know the commands to use in CMD.

Wugs toolkit has it.
Extract it and put it in the correct folder with Fastboot capabilities and use the commands
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (this'll give you stock recovery)
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img (only do this one if you want to completely reset and delete everything on your internal SD card. Don't do this step of you want to keep your files like pictures and music on SD card)

Yeah. Choose 4.4.2. Asking your build is just so when you flash kernnel and recoveries it flashes a compatible one. But since your just flashing stock images. Just do that. But again remember it'll wipe everything so backup your SD card to a computer first

I managed to get to the point where it boots TWRP and then just had "waiting for device"
Edit: got to this same point 3 times now, tried rebooting but I'm still on 4.2.2, could you tell me what files I need to go ahead and flash it using cmd?

If you use Wigs toolkit you can flash the new update if you do a complete restore with in root. Then you can re root. Just go to flash stock + unroot then click the images drop down down box. Pick the mantaray-manta : android 4.4.4- build KOT49H then click the button that shows automatically download. After install re root and restore. Backup everything first it makes a quicker restore.

First, go download the image:

While that is downloading, make a new folder on the desktop and name it FLASH, also for extracting the file once it is downloaded I reccomend total commander:

Once the zip file with adb and fastboot is downloaded extract the files into the FLASH folder. Now that we've done all this the image should be downloaded, extract the contents to the FLASH folder. Now open up command prompt. In command prompt type the following(excluding the quotation marks):
"cd C:\Users\*username*\Desktop\FLASH"
*username* Is the name of the user. Now turn off your device then boot your device into fastboot mode(hold the power+volume up+volume down buttons) once your device is in fastboot mode connect it to your computer. In command prompt type(again excluding quotations):
"fastboot devices"
After that you should see your nexus device in fastboot mode, if you have no important data and don't care about losing everything(me) you can just type this in command prompt(no quotations):
"flash-all"
But if that does not work or you do have important things, type:
"fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img”

TWRP no OS detected HELP!!!

I just installed TWRP on my N4 and have never used it before. I always used CWM and I just wiped it through recovery. My issue is that I wiped EVERYTHING. It says "no OS detected" and won't boot past the Google logo. Can't install drivers when connected to the computer, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to flash a stock image, or fix it with the nexus root toolkit. Could someone PLEASE give me a walkthrough for a noob of how to go about fixing this? I don't understand a lot that deals with ADB and all that. Thank you.

Google tool adb fastboot drivers. Then Google nexus 4 factory image and download that. Use 7-zip to extract it. Flash the flash-all.bat while your phone is in fastboot mode and connected to your pc

Do I she the factory image it originally had which was 4.2.2 or do I use the image I updated to which was 4.3? Don't know if it matters, but I've never done this so I don't want to make anything worse.

As to you problem, can you boot into recovery..the twrp? If yes, then it is easy. Just sideload a rom (preferably a 4.2.2 rom as it was the last rom on your device). Oh and yeah, sideload does use a bit of adb command (see how important it is for us, the nexus user?).
The other way is to simply use toolkits (which is a shortcut, not good as you will learn nothing of the whole process and it just takes all the fun away). Look in original android dev section for wugfresh toolkits (but I really, really, really hope that you learn ADB. After all, we need to learn to count before we start using a calculator right? ). Good luck. Don't sweat it so much.
p/s: That video there can be used for any android version and any rom of nexus 4.

Sounds easy enough. My only issue has been that I couldn't install any drivers. I can boot into twrp, but that's it. Any guide I've researched says to turn on USB debugging, which I can't figure out how to do since it won't boot past the Google logo, and the drivers won't install correctly when I connect the nexus to a computer.

Use wugfresh nexus root tool kit to flash a stock rom.
USB debugging is not required to flash a stock ROM via fastboot.

The easiest in my opinion would be sideloading a new rom, like cm11, paranoidandroid etc. Then you could easily install it on your n4

Install drivers manually. Just Google "nexus 4 USB drivers" download and install. Then get toolkit and flash stock image.

I'll try again. I was able to figure the drivers out. Tried flashing a stock image I downloaded, but I still wouldn't boot past the Google logo. I flashed it to the system partition, but I didn't know what partition to flash it to. Do I need to use the modified boot image it wants me to download, or am I supposed to flash it to a certain partition?

FIXED IT!!! thank you all for your help.
For anyone else with this problem, I downloaded "universal naked drivers" and installed them manually, use the Nexus Root Toolkit selected "soft brick, than flash stock/unroot, let it download RETORT and the modified boot image, flash it in fast-food, then when it booted up, re-rooted. (You lose root access when you do this).
