Anybody looking for a development idea, an obvious one is a decent File Manager. Even one which could access the Photos & Videos & Music only. A perfect one would be able to browser LAN shares.
I know MS has made this difficult but that should be only a delay to a serious programmer...
The only common files on local storage that are accessible to an application are on an SD card. Writing an SD card file manager should be easy.
Yes this is needed, I send stuff to my self via Bluetooth and want to be able to drill down to my folders.

Hi, this is my first post believe it or not.
So: Hello Everyone.
This is the issue:
I use Media Player on my computer to access a Turkish Soccer TV Channel (Subscription Based). Since I purchased a T-Mobile branded Magician, and a WiFi SD Card, I would like to be able to watch it on my PDA, as well.
First problem: Media Player is trying to use the free space on the main memory to buffer. Therefore I get "Not enough storage is available to complete this operation." Also, when I am able to see video, it freezes every 2 seconds.
Second problem: I was not able to find any place to change buffer settings.
Question: How can I change these to enjoy high quality (367 Kbps) video on my PDA, for personal enjoyment and show off to others. Also, how can I configure the media player to use the free space on the SD not main memory?
Thank you.
You don't..
You do NOT want to use your SD cards memory for this..
The reason?
You have about 5 to 10 thousand write operations before the storage "cell" on the SD card is "worn out"..
Well, you do the math..
367kbps is a lot of data, many RW operations..
It would kill your SD card after a "short" time..
The only way to solve this is by using the RAMDISK patch, and use that as buffer memory..
If this is doable, I'm not sure..
Your other option is installing the translated 2003SE ROM, it has WMP10..
I couldn't find the patch on the ftp server. Could you tell me under which directory it is located?
Thank you.
Should be under the WM2005 directory..
I don't have access to port 21 right now, so I cant confirm anything..
Search for "RAMDISK" and "BUZZ"...
Then you'll find the files and instructions..
Weird, This is the 2nd device I've had and both do this...
I sync music to the card, Media Centre picks the music up, but then after a reset it all goes wrong:
The next time I start MC, it doesn't even see the storage card (in the Library). Updating the library, it finds the tracks but seems to hang while adding them. Meanwhile, the free storage on the card goes down... and down... and down until there's none left. MC then says "can't add the tracks" and gives up.
Anyone else having this trouble, or am I incredibly unlucky?!
Ferg.
I have the same issue on my TyTN...
really frustrating but I found a workaround: browse the storage and delete the hidden folder MSMETADATA, then try to update media player library.
You won't find such folder using the file explorer provided with WM5: you must use an enhanced file explorer such as Resco one in order to view hidden and system files.
I have the same problem but I will try deleting that files to see if it helps.
That seems to work Nic, nice one.
I'm sure I remember doing this before with no success, but my memory is obviously playing tricks.
ferg.
I also have the same problem. It is very annoying...
However, if you go to the Library screen, then Menu > Open File and navigate to storage card > playlists, you can open any of your playlists...
Not ideal but it works.
I removed that file and it works fine now, jusy hope is stays the same for a few days.
Yeah, I've had the same problem too and I've tried all the various things suggested with limited success. The only surefire solution I've encountered is to copy all my important folders from the storage card to my desktop - minus any of the media files/folders and the msmeta data files, using resco, reformat the storage card, replace all the files from the desktop, resync and then synchronise he music through wm player again.
What a pain!
Sorry, this must be a fairly lame novice question.
I have rooted my transformer, upgraded to 3.1 and use cifsmanager to mount all my media on my linux file server. I thought that was the hard part, but it was fun&easy, thanks to XDA-developers.
But when it comes to just figuring out how to comfortably view my pictures... well, that seems more difficult.
a) I can not figure out i can get googles built-in gallery app to find/index my picture media on my mounted file system. Is that possible at all ?
b) When i use any of the file managers like Astro or Estrong, i can view pictures with their built-in picture viewers, but they are lame because they do not support multitouch to zoom in&out of the picture and have no nice animation moving between pictures. They also seem to be somewhat slower.
c) When i use Gallery from any File manager, it will only show a single picture, but not allow to view all pictures in the directory. I wonder/fear, if Gallery can display all pictures in a directory at all, or whether it first needs to have every directory be indexed through the "i have no clue how it works" method.
d) So i copied a bunch of my photos over to the transformers SD to see how gallery treats them then, and it seems that gallery has no concept of hierarchies whatsoever. My whole nice picture tree (year/{topic|month}{/subtopic}) got totally flattened out into a ridiculous long list of albums.
So, any chance to get best of both worlds ? Eg: Use Gallery to view an individual folder (with the nice thumbnails from gallery, snappy flipping between pictures and mult-touch zoom) AND to use a file manager to navigate between folders. And of course the folders are network mounted or local ?
Thanks
JustPictures is your answer, free from the market.
Use stock gallery for fancily watching your local albums if you need, use justpictures to open a pic from within file manager.
Btw, I always used Es file manager on the phone, but switched to FileManager HD on the tablet.
Thanks!
JustPictures looks good, thanks a lot for the pointer.
I still would like to understand though how android determines the "local pictures" directories and if i have a way to change them or add some other directory to that list.
JustPictures for example has a very nice browsing through the android known picture directories, which is much nicer than using any file manager - because it has thumbnails and so on. But of course that only works for those magical "local directories".
In JustPictures under Add Account you can add extra Local 'accounts' and specify a specific directory you want to include. I think this solves your problem if I understand you correctly.
BTW is there any way to achieve what you did without rooting the Transformer? I want to look at pictures on my linux box from it, but could not find a decent solution.
I can share the photos in quite a few ways (webdav, ftp, dlna/upnp, samba/smb/cifs), but could not find a decent picture viewer to handle that. The thing that came the closest is to share with dlna and use a dlna viewer like MyNet (that comes with the Transformer). But all the DLNA viewers seem to be optimized for videos and music. With pictures they don't have basic features like caching the next picture for faster viewing.
JustPictures seems to only support cloud or local locations. But LAN options are not present.
Ok, so here's a more detailed answer to both zsori and te36:
Ive just mounted my Linux' homeserver Samba share (Cifsmanager - settings - load at startup, load via insmod, create share, mount).
Then, I used FileManager HD to navigate into it (/mnt/sdcard/share in my case), then navigated to one of the dirs, switched to grid view to see the thumbnails, and tapped one of the pics. (Ihave JustPictures opening pics by default)
JustPictures opened the pic; then i pressed Back, which brought me to JustPictures folder view, essentially treating the mounted dir as local.
I think thats what both of you wanted. Clearly , you need root to use Cifsmanager, but these days rooting is a matter of seconds ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125714 ).
I have one more concern regarding cifs besides root: In my experience linux does not handle it too nicely when a mounted network filesystem dissapears. It can cause general lag in the system and even unmounting the (not available) filesystem might block for some time.
Since I had these issues I have usually avoided to mount network file systems and tried to access them with user space solutions (like the integrated cifs support in the KDE file manager).
Does CifsManager try to solve these issues? Do you have any experience? Or could you test mounting the cifs shares and then making the shares unavailable (eg. by shutting down the PC)?
I would like to avoid rooting just to find out that this is not the ideal solution for me...
I'm also interested in a picture viewer that can access smb share without rooting my transformer.
i'm now using file manager hd and es file explorer to view shared photos but both aren't very efficient in photo managing.
I didn't have the chance to test it with SMB shares, but QuickPic is the best gallery alternative.
How do I use it besides from roms and such? I can't play music, video or emulator roms off of it.
Not sure what you mean, all my music and videos are stored on my 32gb microsd, and I have no problem playing them without transfering them to the main memory.
When I add new music to it, the stock music player picks up the new tracks automatically, and mobo, which I use for video allows you to set the default directory to search for files it can use. Just select the file icon from the main menu and press the back soft key until you see the external sd listed.

I'm gonna have to recheck because it couldn't find anything on my sdcard before. Thanks.
should be pretty simple
Your external SD is located at /mnt/external_SD - i either use a external microsd reader or ES file explorer to copy files to my MicroSD - after copy you may need to reboot your a500 to have apps pick up on the files. I use a free great app called "SDRescan" - free from the market, no supported ads or anything like that - it will force a rescan of your media without the need to reboot.
Hope this helps - i keep my music and my camera/video recorder files on external SD and have no problems accessing them from any app I use.
Problems solved. The app I was using wouldn't allow it to scan anything besides sdcard instead of ext_sd (or whatever it is).
Is there any way to cut and paste (in ES File Explorer) between the two? It fails every time I try.
Using es file explorer
Cut/paste to the microSD card fails every time.
Work around - copy/paste - then delete files from the source after confirming copy was successful. Works fine for me

+1 for SDRescan. It took a couple of attempts before my media showed in the music player though. Kinda annoying, but bearable
Glad i could help
SDRescan is a must have tool for me - much faster to run it and force rescan then wait for a full system reboot. I usually find waiting for 10~ seconds after running/closing it works like a charm.
hi, I'm coming from android and got an issue with the default file manager for wm10. I'm searching for a file manager wich can be quick, easy to use and can create/extract zip files (or better zip and rar). I don't care if is it free or i have to pay but i want a functional app.
for example i loved android's es file explorer and solid explorer. is there something like it for wp10? i don't want an app full of ads if possibile
There's nothing nearly on the same level as Solid Explorer or ES File Explorer.
What's best on W10M really depends on what you need though. Yuki Explorer is a decent one though, and it has a free, full-featured version with no ads. It also has the benefit of SMB share support, and working with Continuum.
I'm looking for a decent file manager wich can manages zips and rars, no matter if is free or not, just i hate ads for now thanks for your suggestion, i'll try it
perhaps you should try total commander.
Metro file manager seems to be the best one I've come across so far. It can handle zips and synchronize with the cloud based file storage like Google Drive, One Drive, etc., hide files, and some more that I'm still not aware of maybe. It can handle ftp transfers like in ES and Solid after you pay for the complete package ($2 or $3, I think), which also takes away the ads. And I just found out that it has tabbed viewing
good advice! that's what i was searching for, even if was a really hard decision with yuki file explorer. Anyway due to interface language i preferred metro. Thanks
Metro File Manager eX is superb for me. With FTP sharing feature I'm rarely plug my phone to computer. Also, it supports samba network drives and have build in picture viewer, video/audio players.
Total Commander, Aerize Explorer (Pro), Pocket File Manager...
I use Total Commander and Metro File Manger. Both apps can read files from Samba shares.
But how can I play MKV/x264 from share? AVI files are working with WM10 standard video Player over Network, MKV not.
Q1: Does anyone have a MKV player which can read from SMB share?
Q2: How can I change default program / file association to open MKV in TC with VLC or Smart Player?
not sure for SMB share, but try CCPlayer for MKV files.
Metro File Manager is one of the (many) things I find superior on WP.
- Access to cloud services
-Great interface
I don't know how (and don't need at this point) to root WP10, but root access is one big drawback compared to Android file managers.
