Re: [GUIDE]Step by Step to root
Exactly like kicker63 said...the root file doesn't have samsung signature which means it can't be flashed except in CWM since it can avoid the sig. Thing

Yes, and if you have cwm you are probably already rooted
Otherwise you'll have a custom binary count of at least 1 :/

So it look`s like it`s only for CWM and not Stock recovery like SHAAAN originally said.

It do not work with Stock Recovery.

Re: [GUIDE]Step by Step to root
Exactly...we have a huge problem when dealing with sammy...sansung signature as it showed us is very hard to imitate

It should be noted with big letters in the OP that this method increases your flash counter. And that at the moment there is no way to zero it.
And just a comment, this method has already been posted, here.

Re: [GUIDE]Step by Step to root
As you may see I pointed that out inbthe last of my post...and yes there is another method to install cwm with zero counter but its complicated

If you refer to "dd" method you'll need to have root already to execute those commands via terminal. Might work through ADB without rooted device. Not really sure 'bout that.
Only known method (as far as I know) to get root without increased custom binary count is still to flash pre-rooted rom through odin.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, and the root method in that thread is as I said, to flash a pre-rooted rom.
There is no other known way for the moment, if you still want to keep your binary count at zero.

What I meant was that this method can install the cwm recovery without vinary count...right?
And then you can flash it by shaan root file and by that way you will not (I think and theoretically) lose binary count

"dd" command doesn't increase binary count, thats right. But you need to be rooted already to be able to..
"I recommend you flash this recovery with dd and not Odin/heimdall after rooting with the system.img method"

Can't backup ROM, "sd marker not found"
Any ideas?
It said that to me when trying to use the app to backup but I did it manualy and it worked fine.
Any advantage/disadvantage of flashing the new CWM through ROM Manager, or manually through ODIN? Btw, do you flash this through ODIN or (old) CWM since this is a .img file?
Just so ppl know, you can find all CWM Recoveries here:

No problem!
Another tip, backups made with the older CWM recovery (the unofficial one, the one you probably flashed after rooting initially), those older backups may not be compatible with the newer, official versions. I'm using the latest CWM Touch 5.8.4.6 and it seems to backup system and data differently

If you downloaded the CWM img file rename it to just "recovery.img" then put it on the root of your SD
Open up Mobile Odin, Select "Open File", then select your recovery.img (I put it on Internal Storage)
After you select your recovery.img, before you select Flash Firmware, it should list the recovery.img in the recovery slot
Then you should be all set. Select Flash Firmware and after it flashes you should automatically be rebooted into recovery (I suggest making a backup ASAP just to be safe)
Phew... Glad to see there is a fix... I thought I was losing my freaking mind when I tried backup of my rom....

The mobile Odin way did not work for me. After I flashed the img file, rebooted and tried to do a backup using Clockwork mod, the phone rebooted and gave me the same errors as posted above! ???Help???
EDIT: Duplicated this same error/issue on my second GS3...so it is definitely CWM related...also..cannot "see" or view the backups on the phone via the Rom Manager app either..very frustrating...hope those smarter than me can fix...I am willing to assist in any way... thanks

the team epic guys has set us up with a recovery that would stick cause the first samsung ota automatically reverted to their own recovery instead of cwm. maybe this issue is related. it just keeps overwriting what you flashed thinking that it's a bad (Samsung) recovery. don't know for sure as i haven't tried it yet.

that defeats the purpose of this new, "supported" recovery as i would like the option to flash things and manage backups via rom manager.

[Q] Anyway to flash stock Recovery without PC

I prefer to keep my recovery as stock for security reasons but occasionally I'll be away from PC and want to flash something with a custom recovery, so I'll flash CWM using ROM manager or TWRP with goo, but to revert to stock recovery I'll have to wait until I'm back at my PC.
So is there a way to revert to stock recovery without the PC?
Thanks in advance
Put the stock recovery on your phone. You can flash it with cwm or terminal when you'd like.

If you have an .img file do it with the terminal emulator. Its been a while since I have done that (The G1 days) but assuming recovery.img is in the root of your sdcard, I believe the command is:
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img

Just an untested guess but looking at a CWM flashable zip something along the lines of...
Code:

I think I would try to make/find a CWM flasable for the stock recovery.img

Root 4.4.2 on GT-N7100 <All builds>

Update: If you want root access only and don't want to have a custom recovery, Good news now you can do that without tripping knox
See this thread here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52547929
The official 4.4.2 for our Note 2 has just started rolling out and many of us want to root it too.
So here is a simple guide I have made to root official 4.4.2
This guide works on all builds of 4.4.2 so do not worry about the compatibility issue.
Moreover there is no method to root without tripping the Knox warranty Void on ML4 and later firmwares.
So keep in mind this will trip your Knox Flag
What you will need:
1. Odin 3.09
2. Philz recovery 6.26.6 (.tar.md5 required) from http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/n7100//philz_touch_6.26.6-n7100.tar.md5
3. Update SuperSu v2 from here http://download.chainfire.eu/450/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.00.zip
Procedure
1.Download and open Odin v3.09
2.Load your downloaded recovery onto the PDA/AP button on Odin
3.Make sure you dont mess with anything else on Odin.
4.Now click Start and your recovery will be flashed in under 10 seconds.
Now boot into recovery and flash the update superSu v1.94 zip.
5. Now you can reboot your phone.
Done.Your device is rooted now.
Important : If you aren't able to flash custom recovery correctly, then untick Auto Reboot on Odin.
Now flash recovery. And now boot the phone into recovery mode directly.
This should work 99.99 percent.
This generally happens on NA1 and later firmwares because the custom recovery gets overwritten by stock recovery at every boot.
DO NOT RESTART YOUR PHONE AFTER FLASHING THE RECOVERY. BOOT TO RECOVERY FROM DOWNLOAD MODE ITSELF.
[/SIZE="5"]
Here is a small picture guide which will make the instructions more clear. Thanks to @singhpratik87 for the picture.

Problems & Fixes:
Fix No.1
If you keep getting SuperSu has stopped notifications constantly then follow these steps to fix
Uninstall SuperSu from inside the SuperSU app where it says Reinstall from playstore. (Dont worry you wont lose root access)
Now download SuperSu again from playstore
Doing this installs SuperSu on /data/app partition where it wont get stopped by knox.
Fix No.2
If Fix no.1 doesnt work for you then try this out.
Download Terminal Emulator from the playstore.
Open it and type this code:
Code:
su
pm disable com.sec.knox.seandroid
This will disable the Knox apps which prevent SuperSu from running.
Fix No. 3
If none of the above things work to disable Knox. Then try this.
Through any Root Explorer go to
/system / app &
/ system / priv-app and delete all the apks having the word Knox in it. Also delete their corresponding odex files.
This should work 100%. But doing this modifies your system partition and you may lose OTA functionality temporarily.

@Phil3759 for the recovery.

There are chances of a soft brick due to TWRP. It happened to me on 4.3 too and overcomed the brick by flashing philz recovery.Hence I suggest Philz recovery.
I rooted 4.4.2 official via http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/
It worked fine after updating supersu from play store.
Any benefits of using one or the other method?

Yeah that is no doubt a good toolkit but that makes the rooting process more longer and complicated. And I believe that is not really needed.
Just disabling knox using the command on terminal emulator should be fine.

This should work 100%. But doing this modifies your system partition and you may lose OTA functionality temporarily.

You have to flash the update superSu zip first.
And the fixes should work because to have root access you just need Su binary installed in /system/xbin
You donot need SuperSu to be working correctly for having root access. Though I may be wrong.
What I mean to say is the fixes are for the app and not the binary. So they should work.

Are you talking about ND3?
After flashing the SuperSU are you not able to get root access?
I have no idea why this is happening only to you.
Try the cf autoroot then.

[Q] How to root and unroot LG G2

Hello!
I just changed my phone from LG Optimus Black to a G2, and I need some help if you don't mind
First, how I can root my phone and for sure I don't brick it ?xD.. i know the process how to root from Optimus Black, but i'm just asking to be sure.. the forum of G2 here on xda just confuse me why are different sub-forums for each carrier ? and if my phone is open, where should i look for ROMs?
So.. I want to root my phone because I can do more things with it ..but i have warranty on my phone..so how i can unroot and reinstall the stock version of android without custom recovery menu and root? these are my questions, how to root and unroot
And other question, if I wipe data from LG G2, the files from internal storage remains?
The easy way to root your phone is: install a custom rom, then install supersu http://download.chainfire.eu/396/SuperSU/ by recovery. To unroot your phone, just select the option unroot on setting of supersu App.
And no. Your data internal storage is safe. For wipe your internal storage you must wipe internal data sd card ( storage lg g2 )

You need to root the phone before installing a custom ROM.

Read that post and follow directions. Pretty much all versions of android for the G2 are rootable.
As far as going back to stock, there are 2 ways:
1) make a backup of your stock ROM (this requires having a custom recovery installed) before flashing a custom ROM. This will allow you to revert to stock if you have any probs or just want to return to stock. You WILL still be rooted tho.
2) use the LG flash tool to revert to stock. This will put your phone completely back to stock as if you just pulled it out of the box (you will not be rooted after this process). This will also wipe your internal SD card.

I think is not obligatory to have root, just a custom recovery menu to can install a custom rom..but root is highly recommended
Hmm..this version is rootable?

No matter if you're using flashify, freegee, or pushing the image via ADB, you MUST have root first in order to flash a custom recovery. Any one of those methods needs root access.
Check this thread to root your version of android.

Anytime you need to send your phone back for warranty, use the LG flash tool and flash back to stock. It will wipe everything (including internal SD card) on the phone and return it to the same state as when you first pulled it out of the box. Also it will reset the root checker flag to zero (unrooted).
Although unrooting via the supersu app may completely unroot the phone, it may not reset the flag. Using the above mentioned method is a sure way to be safe.
Besides, you would most likely do a factory reset on your phone before sending it in so others don't see what data you have on it (pics, files, etc) so why not use the flash tool instead?

once you get root, how do you go about getting a custom recovery installed so you can install a custom ROM?

But Towelroot is a good one to try and of course Framaroot.

Is it possible to root without installing a custom recovery?
This way I could still get OTAS and install them, right?

I read it doesn't.
Are people sure the unroot message can be undone?
I read that if you're on KitKat you can't.

[Q] getting back to stock after cwm

Hello everyone,
today I rooted + bootloader unlocked my N4 with Towelroot and after that I installed Multirom because I wanted to try the Android L developer Preview.
After realizing that a rooted device with a custom recovery won't get official OTA updated anymore I want to have my stock N4 back
I did not install any rom.
Is there a way I can get my stock recovery back WITHOUT having to set up my device again?
I mean, only the recovery should have changed.
I have a mac and a Win XP PC for any tools. I am running stock Android 4.4.4 and kernel 3.4.0-perf-ga6edd5e
Very thankful for any help
If all you need to do is get the stock recovery back you can do that in fastboot. The factory image includes recovery.img. Flash that
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
will this bring me back the ability to get OTA updates?
If so.. is there a tutorial or anything like that I can follow? I have not worked with ADB and fastboot before but thanks a lot for your quick answer!

It's easy to do. First Google 15 second adb install xda. That'll set up fastboot on your pc. Then Google nexus 4 factory image. Download that and then extract it using winrar or 7-zip. In there you'll find a zip file. Extract that too and you'll find recovery.img.
Boot your device into the bootloader and then in a command prompt opened in the same directory as recovery.img is located run the commands I gave you earlier. You'll then have the stock recovery on your device.

I do not find a second archive in there.
Could it be that the recovery.img is also called 'boot.img' ?

no. Boot.img is the kernel. There should be a zip file in there. In there is recovery.img
Edit, out should be called image- something or other
Edit, edit. If you found boot.img, recovery should be in the same directory as it

just to be sure: this will not any of my data/apps on the phone, right?

I tried it several times with fastboot on mac (the 15 sec installer on Win XP did not work) but everytime I open fastboot I am not able to type anything in.
In the last row of the screenshot it says something like "process closed"
Is the any other tool I can use for that?

I'm not familiar with the Mac, but another alternative is to do it from your phone. Get flashify from the play store and flash the recovery.img in it. Just copy recovery.img to your phone

Ha! This worked instantly. After pressing "reboot now" it tried to reboot but a screen with "no service" appeared.
After rebooting the device manually everything booted normally.
Is there Any way I can now check if I now have the "stock recovery" again?
What are the criteria to get official OTA updates again from Google?
Thanks so much!

To check just boot into the bootloader and go to recovery. The stock recovery should be there.
To get the ota you can not have any modified or deleted system files.

Mmh the stock recovery is the Android lying on the back, correct?
So If I have the stock recovery+no rom installed I should get updates, correct?
Root and an open bootloader has no effects to it?

Hello @jd1639
I was just trying to sideload the lollypop OTA file via fastbootand I does not install correctly. There is always an error.
Could this have anything to do with the root access and the unlocked bootloader?
I think I read somewhere something like rooted devices will get the OTA update but will not be able to install them correctly.
Is there a way to get that to work without erasing my data?

Are you flashing it in the stock recovery? If not flash the stock recovery in fastboot and try it again. To use adb sideload you need to be booted into recovery not fastboot

Yeah I did that.
I got everything stock but have been flashing the recovery back to stock (like I described in the thread).
Getting something like a "status 7" error.
I am booted into recovery mode. The sending process works and then it tries to install the update on my phone and then the installation process stops..

I got that status 7 error myself. I fastboot flashed recovery, system, boot, and cache from 4.4.4. It won't wipe anything. Then the sideload worked
