Hmmm, I notice you said "unroot"
stock recovery or custom?
That assert is there to insure that it is only flashed to a tilapia/nakasig (3g) N7
The getprop values in question are being read from the *recovery*, not the installed ROM... so, the most reasonable conclusion is that you have a custom recovery or stock recovery from a grouper device installed on your (tilapia) 3g N7.
Flash the stock tilapia recovery there and try again.
This would be an unreasonable hypothesis for a never-rooted tab, but you did say "unrooted"

Hi!
im having the same problem, Nexus 7 3G is rooted with custom recovery...
is there a way to install the 4.2.2 update with custom recovery or do i have to return to stock?
thank you!
R: [Q] unable to update my n7 3g to android 4.2.2
You are maybe using a recovery for grouper. Just flash the right tilapia recovery and all should works.
Nexus 7 3G - Tapatalk
Hum... I had this kind of problem, I guess.
I searched many threads when I rooted and unlocked my Nexus 7 3g, to avoid this "status 7" problem.
I chose Wug´s nexus toolkit, unlocked and rooted my device. After that, I installed, via toolkit, the TWRP recovery.
When I received the system update notification, my device asked me to reboot, then a screen of TWRP appeared to me. I just rebooted the system and now, without update, I don´t even get the message again.
I assume that the Wug´s toolkit flashed a grouper version of TWRP. What I have to do now ? I would like to do the things manually. Maybe flash a factory image from here with this method.
I´m very noob with this kind of thing, because I still have a old milestone 2 with a locked bootloader. The method to flash ROM in milestone 2 is quite different...
Anybody can help me ?

finally I found it. took so long I almost abandonned
I had to use stock recovery and adb sideload the zip file, it would not work with CWM eveb if I manually edit the script to skip that assert line, it would crash later in the modem part of the update.
Also, if you have a 3G version you need to use nakasig instead of nakasi, I have used the link from there to get the zip file: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1745781

Hey guys,
So I attempted to root my nexus s and ran into some troubles.
I started the process on my mac.....(keep in mind I also have a PC, so that is still an option to work with) I got the bootloader unlocked.....I have ClockwordMod Recovery v3.0.0.0 working.......but as soon as I try to restart the device it just wont go past the google splash screen with the padlock.
I've tried to install superuser .zip files.....nandroid backup .zips....with no success. I always get hung up on the splash screen!
I feel terrible I don't know where I went wrong

Did you follow the terrible guide at http://nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-hacks/how-to-root-nexus-s/ where you flash the insecure boot image that is way out of date and only for the i9020t?
Are you trying to restore a stock rom or a custom rom? Either way, grab the full package OTA of a stock rom for your device (around 90mb) or your custom rom of choice and flash that from CWM. That will write a new boot.img as well as /system, etc.

I didn't follow that guide thankfully but I still think I followed an outdated procedure.
So when i try to install a rom Clockwork always aborts the installation.
here is the error I get:

Do you have a GSM Nexus S (i9020t, i9020a, i90230) or the CDMA Nexus S 4G? If it's the latter you are trying to flash a ROM that's not for your device. Get a rom for the NS4G from that development forum (device = crespo4g).
have you tried flashing a rom?

It is the GSM Nexus S i9020A. Don't believe that to be an issue.
I've threw so many different zip files on my sd card when I mount it via usb and I always seem to get that same error message. Pretty frustrating....I always read about people not being able to flash recovery but I'm there.....I just can't seem to find anyone who has my same issue...
Any other information I can provide that would be useful?

What is the latest version ?
Update CWM to higher than 4.0.0.0. You could flash the zip below in recovery and if that doesn't work then find the new version with fastboot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1248760
EDIT: Just flash one of these with fastboot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988686&highlight=clockwork+recovery
The first and second ones will work for you.

Flash the stock kernel. You can do it a number of ways. You can find a cwm zip file with it, use the toolkit to do it, or get the IMG yourself and flash it via fast boot. I had this error earlier.
Install a custom recovery and use it to run the update. If you already have a custom recovery, then that's why you can't run the ota via google possibly.

Any guides on this? Pretty new to android.
Anyone have any thoughts on what I should do?
Did you touch any of your system apps?
Seems more likely your update didn't download fully and it failed and md5 checksum. Just try again next time.
I don't think I touched any of the system apps. I did download Adblock and six axis tool. Anything else to look for?
I've downloaded the update probably 4 different times now and same thing each time.
Anything else I can try?

Any other options besides resetting? has no one else who only rooted and unlocked run into this problem???
I didn't change any system apps, and for rooting purposes the only apps I downloaded where Titanium Backup, Sixaxis and Stickmount. Should I remove those?
and OT Rootkeeper. Do I remove root first?

I was getting exactly the same as you Foxman2k, about the unverified whole-file signature when trying the OTA way. I've just followed the advice of the above linked thread and it worked fine. I had to install Quick Boot (Reboot) to get in to Recovery, then update from SD Card, then ensure signature verification is disabled, then select the downloaded .zip file. I did have RootKeeper active, but I don't really understand what that does so not sure if it made any difference.
HTH
I finally managed to get mine to go through, am rooted but running stock and was getting the error with build.prop.
Then it hit me, I am in tablet mode with my screen at 160, so I set it back to 213 and boom it went through.
HTH
Can you please help me answer how to install OTA updated with CWM installed. I get this error saying the installation aborted .. it boots into CWM
is there any step by step method to get the new update on nexus 4
Thanks
you need stock rom, no modifications made, and stock kernel for it to work
Download and extract the original 4.2 and fastboot flash system system.img and it'll restore all missing apps.. I had to do it earlier to allow the system to install the update

update manually.
So I got my update but it keeps failing during install. I'm rooted and every time the update starts it kicks over to CWM recovery and stops with a message something like, "do you want to install this untrusted zip file" I say yes but it still fails. I have even tried to manually install the update through CWM but that fails too. My N7 is rooted but otherwise stock, I have not removed any stock apps or flashed roms or kernels so WTF must I do???

I don't know where, but I saw a few posts about working updates to 4.2.1 with CWM recovery.
However, I'm not getting it to work.
How do I get rid of the recovery without loosing the root?
If you are on Windows I find the Nexus 4 Toolkit to be super easy to use. I flashed a stock recovery so I could get the update. Unfortunately, I forgot I had made changes to the stock weather widget so I can't apply the update anymore because of a missing geniewidget.odex file.
You will need to be fully stock to get the update to take as posted earlier in this thread. This is a well known requirement when doing OTA

Hey,
got an Error over here with stock recovery and root.
However, tengen says he made it with CWM and root - maybe it's because I'm using stuff like Busybox or the Pimp my Rom APK?
EDIT: I think its because of the %-BatteryMod I'm using. I'll try to flash the custom rom.

No, never. I just wiped the phone and installed stock 4.2.2 using the Toolkit and now it won't boot.
EDIT: I guess that's because the Toolkit doesn't support 4.2.2. Oh well just flashed it using ADB. Hope I can get all my app data back...
I have a Nexus 7 (2012, grouper) which so far I have kept on 4.1.2 (JZO54K) using FOTAkill, but now I want to update to 4.2.2. I also have the latest CWM recovery (6.0.4.3).
I plan on applying successively:
094f6629314a.signed-nakasi-JOP40C-from-JZO54K.094f6629.zip
then
659e6288b87d.signed-nakasi-JOP40D-from-JOP40C.659e6288.zip
then
6ece895ecb23.signed-nakasi-JDQ39-from-JOP40D.6ece895e.zip
Using ADB I tried to apply the first update, but it fails. I also tried applying it from /sdcard, but the same thing happens. The error message happens after "verifying current system..." and it consists of:
assert failed: apply_patch_check("/system/app/Browser/ProviderProxy.odex", "21a896ab...
E: Error in /data/media/094f6629314a.signed-nakasi-JOP40C-from-JZO54K.094f6629.zip
(status 7)
I tried downloading the zip update again, but it still fails. I downloaded it from http://android.clients.google.com/p...signed-nakasi-JOP40C-from-JZO54K.094f6629.zip
Does the fact that by bootloader is locked have anything to do with this error?
...and the answer is no. Even with bootloader unlocked, the update still fails with the same error.
