Hey guys, I've been lurking around the XDA forums for a while and found some really helpful information here, so I thought I'd ask if anybody here was using the T-Mobile HD2 on AT&T, and if AT&T forces you into a data plan. The reason for this is because I want to buy an HD2 off of eBay, but I am reading mixed reports of some people having it identified as a Blackberry 7290 on AT&T's OLAM and being forced to pay the smartphone data rate while others say that AT&T can't detect it as a smartphone because the IMEI number is not in AT&T's list. Sorry if this is in the wrong place or sometinhg, I'm still a noob here
Hi!
I have a Telestra HD2 on AT&T. Just checked my account, they have no idea what it is. I'm paying for data by choice though.
Here's the thing, make sure you disable data in the phone with a 3rd party program. The HD2 is going to access data on it's own if you don't disable data. Data becomes VERY expensive if you don't have a plan. Also, to be safe, call AT&T and disable data on your account. This does disable MMS though...
Thanks, but would that also apply to the T-Mobile version? I have read around these forums that people with the Telstra model of the HD2 are getting away with it, but the T-Mobile ones are the ones that I am specifically concerned about because I can't afford to import a Telstra model. The T-Mobile ones go for a pretty cheap price on eBay.
Can't help you there, sorry.

I can tell you first hand when I was on AT&T, they were not able to read the IMEI number on my HTC HD2 phone. Didn't have a data plan at the time since I didn't need it. Anytime they asked me about my phone, I will tell them I was using a flip phone. So they will not know unless you tell them. Later I decided to go with T-Mobile because of the better coverage and rates in my area. T-Mobile can see I have an HTC HD2 but because I own the phone, I am not required again to be on a data plan. At least T-Mobile gives you the option while AT&T doesn't if they find out you are using a smartphone. Also, if you go on AT&T, you will be only able to use their EDGE network. Hope this helps.
I decided to go with the Samsung Vibrant instead, because I thought it would be safer just in case AT&T would detect it at some point. I guess this thread might still be useful for anybody else who is in the same situation though.

i m sure that t-mobile usa will detect your hd2. but if you didnt acquire your hd2 from a contract at a discount price, they will not force you into a data plan. I have a hd2 myself and i called up t-mobile today to add data plan to my service. since i have a nuron from them at a discount price, and the data plan required for the nuron is just $10. So after i got my data plan on my nuron, i just switch sim to my hd2 to use data plan. just have to reset apn to internet2.voicestream.com
so i have been using my hd2 on att with edge for about a year now. ever since att starting switchin their towers for the backhaul for 4g i have lost lots of signal. anyone else experiencing this? any way to fix it

I read an article a couple of weeks ago that indicated that AT&T would be gradually phasing out edge.

You must be talking about 3G on another device cause I know you are not getting 3G on the AT&T network using your HD2, that is unless you have the Austrialian model of the HD2.

oh, sorry, lol im talking in general At&t's network
but once i went into roaming, and i had 3G lol
If AT&T removed EDGE off their network that would leave GSM, 3G, and HSPA+... Or isn't EDGE and upgraded GSM... So it would leave just 3G and HSPA+
they cant get rid off EDGE or GSM,
1) GSM is their network removing it would leave the option of CDMA
2) EDGE will be there as long as there is 3G available.
That's right, edge is just faster gprs. Both are part of the GSM type network.
You are probably just getting spotty service during the upgrade. Once they are done in your area you should be back to normal.

well it seems my area will be gettinng 4G lol. cuz my service sucks $#%& at the moment.
i even called AT&T, *****ed them out too... HAHA got my self a new sim card. but im still sending the phone in for repair.
okay guys, MAJOR NEWS! T-Mobile US now belongs to AT&T.
does that mean that with in a year or so, our unlocked HD2 will be picking up AT&T 3G or HSPA+ since the T-Mobile spectrum now belongs to AT&T??

AT&T does not own T mobile yet, they have put in an offer but it has ti be reviewed and approved by the SEC. To make sure that AT&T will not become a monopoly, because with this buy AT&T will leap over Verizon for the largest network by far.

isnt att the biggest network atm. customer wise? and besides it will get approved for the reason that the FCC is huge on getting 4G going. att will hhave the biggest for 4G network.
well at least thats what i think is going to happen.
My question about the whole AT&T/T-Mobile deal is, I'm using a couple of T-Mobile HD2s unlocked on AT&T . When/If the deal goes through, will AT&T know I'm using T-Mobile HD2s and upgrade my data plan from the cheap medianet plan to the smartphone plan? My bill is going to skyrocket!

T-Mobile is still going to operate as a separate entity for a long while. So I don't think you need worry - I think the TMO HD2s will continue to work on EDGE with the AT&T network. The question is if they will share towers (meaning that your phone would have G3), but even then you would have to register your APN for the T-Mobile network, which won't work with an AT&T SIM Card.
Do you think hd2 owners who have at&t will get to use tmobiles wavelength and finally get more than edge network from this happening??
For reference if new to this subject at&t and tmobile both have an EDGE network on the same wavelength so on an unlocked tmobile hd2 one can use the slow 2g internet connection of at&t, but the 3g networks run off of different bands so an at&t # can't connect to any 3g whatsoever, with at&t's purchase of tmobile wouldn't at&t have to utilize tmobiles 3g wavelength in order to still provide 3g and 3.5g to everyone with tmobile phones that aren't compatible with at&t's current network? If so then I'm personally benefitting from this and finally getting a decent mobile data speed on my tmobile phone with my at&t network
Please don't bash at&t here, I know they suck, I've used their service for quite some time now, I'm just looking for opinions and facts on this matter
and I know euro hd2's already pick up at&t 3g, I'm talking about tmous hardware
From what I have read it seems that in a year or so if this deal is accepted by the FCC at&t will reuse and refit tmobiles network towers/equipment to use there 4g LTE network and give it a boost while removing T-Mobile service altogether causing us T-Mobile 3g/4g users to get new phones that work on AT&T's data network so in your case I highly doubt it there really isn't a benefit for AT&T or T-mobile other then T-Mobile users will be able to have different range of phones (mostly iPhone) I really hope the FCC denies this deal not only does it kills another service provider option limiting us to 3 major companies and forces people escaping the high price of service from sprint, Verizon, and At&t (I've been on them all and left because of price and QOS) but also makes AT&T top dog just because they bought out another company
Yea I read about this yesterday. Highly pissed off. I can't stand at&t. Crappy phone signal, high prices, and crappy customer service. I hope this deal does not go through. Just like when sprint was supposed to buy tmobile. Hopefully it's just a rumor.

Actually I have read that its the exact opposite......AT&T has planned to upgrade all of Tmobiles service towers to the 4G LTE, leaving all T-Mobile Branded 3g phones unable to access

yeah, about 5 minutes after i posted this i saw the article stating that at&t is decommissioning tmobile's 3/3.5g towers to use them for their LTE, too bad at&t is already selling "4g" phones (ie the atrix and the inspire 4g) with no capability of utilizing TRUE 4g via LTE later on... anyone else think at&t will re-release said phones as LTE devices for $50 more than the hspa versions? i cant wait to switch to verizon personally, but im waiting for a htc pyramid compatible with verizons 4g network to switch
I received a letter from tmobile if I wanted to attend a meeting/conference for San Jose, Ca becuase my current phone service will be upgraded.... not removed....
Is this confirmed yet? If so, I am going to be HIGHLY pissed off. I HATE AT&T with a passion and refuse to use their service.
Is it possible to unlock my HD2 and my fiancee's Galaxy S Vibrant to use on Sprint or Verizon?

No, only for gsm networks, which is now going through an approval process to become a single gsm network, not confirmed until the fcc gives the word though so keep your fingers crossed!

No Tmobile and AT&T use sim cards and use totally different frequencies
If the deal passes I highly doubt that the T-mobile name will continue for long. Especially since both carriers operate on the voicestream network. This will combine T-mobile's few towers with ATT's many towers. But as someone mentioned earlier niether of these two have real 4G. It ticks me off when I see comercials calling it 4G. Only verizon is rolling out true 4G in LTE.
And in case you haven't heard. T-mobile was going down hill. They were losing money. There were talks of Sprint buying them at first. So it may be a good thing with ATT buying them up.
Believe me, I have searched and can't find a definite answer.
Assuming I get an unlock code from Verizon, and run the Connection Setup, will the Trophy work on T-Mobile at 3G speeds? Yes or no.
If yes, will it work on Verizon again after that, or is it "banned" from their network?\
Hoping for an answer from someone who has actually done this before.
Thanks!

Yes, it should work, you may get 3G speeds, but not HSPA+ speeds.. I do believe. There have been others who have done it, they would know. Even if you get an unlock code, you can still use the phone on Verizon so long as the ESN remains clean. If you really want a Trophy on T-Mobile though.. I'd wager you are better off getting the GSM Euro model for full network speed.

Thanks for the input. Maybe some back story would explain it a little better. Debating on whether or not to switch to T-Mobile monthly 4g from Verizon, saving some money a month. I currently have the Verizon Trophy and wanted to try it out for a month to see how the service compares before I make the switch. Any other help is appreciated from someone who has done this before!
For me, the choice is clear: Verizon. T-Mobile's converge is vastly inferior, and for where I live, it isn't worth it (since T-Mobile is non-existent in this market outside of major cities).
Take a very close look at where you live, and where you travel on the coverage maps.
If you have Verizon and are on Unlimited data via 3G... for the love of God do not switch. lol Stay Grandfathered in and buy a 4G LTE phone outright (not via a plan) and your Unlimited data should carry up to 4G LTE.
Also remember, T-Mobile doesn't have IRL 4G service (LTE) and probably never will. It sounds like a great deal now, but switching might bite you in the ass, especially if your sitting on a Verizon Unlimited data plan. T-Mobile (and AT&T for that matter) run something I like to refer to as "the FAKE-G." Its HSPA+ or what the rest of the non-United States world calls 3.5G service. While AT&T is installing true 4G LTE towers, T-Mobile is simply trying to sell itself off instead of upgrading its network to compete.
Remember, the only real 4G is LTE.
If your on a metered Verizon data plan, it might be worth considering the switch (and shouldn't really change anything if you do). If you got Unlimited data via Verizon, don't even consider it. Wait for a 4G Windows Phone on Verizon and grab that when it hits at full price (even if it cost a pretty penny) and enjoy unlimited true 4G LTE data.
Read this for more information on keeping a Verizon Unlimited data plan with 4G. The only thing is, it doesn't account for the recently announced "truly Unlimited" T-Mobile plans, where they won't throttle your connection after 2GBs for some extra money a month that was just announced.
I'm not trying to sound like some kinda Verizon fanboy, but I want you to know some facts before thinking about switching.
Just want to share something with you guys. I never understood why a phone a device branded to let's say for ATT having quad band that include bands for T-Mobile will only work on EDGE on T-Mobile and wise verse why T-Mobile phones that also have all bands needed for ATT will only work on EDGE on it. That's why for past several years Galaxy S 2 from T-Mobile (T989) was THE BEST phone because no matter what I put in it ATT or T-mobile or anything else it always gave me 3G service and never EDGE. Now to the point. Today I unlocked my i337 SGS4 branded to ATT and decided to check my other Simple Mobile sim with it. I was happily surprised when my 40$ Simple Mobile account gave me H+ ( HSPA: +15 in about menu) and on speed test I am getting steady 6 Mbit down and about 1.5Mbit up. I mean Skype, Youtube videos, and all other things are good to go now on budget carrier with nice unit. Amazing ! Now I heard people went to service menu and change things ,,,,, DON'T. Just get unlock code for like 3$ on eBay (I just did it) and that's it, works out of the box. So //that's all I really wanna say. I am happy to have T-Mobile / Simple Mobile capable unit cause I think I'll be going there soon. my 150$ monthly bills are killing me. I wonder overseas places will this unit pick up fast internet too or only EDGE....I really love my phone now.
P.S.
I was thinking about this for a second here. I have 40$ plan with simple mobile and for 40 they give out Unlimited Internet with first 250 MB of data on 4G speeds, then 3G. So I am thinking "H+" for them is 4G and once 250MB are gone I'll have 3G service "H" (HSPA: 10) but it apsolutely beats "E" (EDGE) anytime.
P.P.S.
Like totally out of the blue question. I have Sony SP15i unit and I tried ATT and I tried T-Mobile and Simple Mobile in it and I only get "E" in it yet phone can accept high speed network, anyone know wtf is going on when both major carriers in US are no good for this phone ? Cause I got it hooked up real nice I put CM10 in it works very nice and I am having like 3 days worth of battery in that little guy. ...sorry for totally off topic shiit.
Thanks guys !
