lcd digitizer separation: need dead phone - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear nexus 4 users. I am interested in finding out if the digitizer can be separated from the LCD and reattached. If it can the cracked screens could be repaired much more cheaply if we can get a source of digitizers.
I am hoping someone with a broken screen could try to separate them. I could do it if you send me a cracked or water damaged screen to experiment on. If you do I will take photos and video of the separation and post them here.

It can't be. The digitizer is etched on the glass AFAIK.

I know. I am suggesting using heat to separate the LCD display from the glass+digitizer. This has been done on other phones with bonded displays.

It's already been done! Here's a video on Youtube. Courtesy of Le55ons http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSe1I0MlpLI

No. It doesn't look like he separates the LCD from the digitizer to me. He replaces the entire LCD+screen+digitizer assembly. I want to break that assembly into two parts separating the LCD from the screen. They are glued together.
So I will separate the LCD (the part that makes the picture) from the glass+digitizer (the bit you touch and that registers the ). Does anyone understand?

They can't be taken apart. They're forever together. Some guy on the Nexus 7 thread took it apart and it was just as useless as before. My point is you can't take it apart. You have to get a full screen replacement.

I saw that same exact video not too long ago and he also said it can't be removed. If it was removable, I'm sure he would have done it. Good luck!

so which bit do you want? The glass, the bezel?

the screen and digitizer are glued together, expensive
It is possible to separate them but it is fiddly, hit and miss, and requires skill and patience.
There is a thread in s3 general about doing it, with a video.
Ahh I thought was separate sorry for misunderstanding

They are very hard to prise apart so my suggestion is live with the scratch and get a screen guard.......always, whenever you get a new phone!
Depending on your phones colour, this is what you will need. He is a UK seller and trusted i can confirm his item is legit. I was playing Basket ball with my brother near my house and the floor was concrete floor. Anyway i took a shot and the phone fell out my jacket pocket and landed face down. The screen protector got totally f'd up and i still got a scratched and a cracked screen.
I was looking at youtube videos on how to replace the screen it looked hard till i found these two items on ebay.
Blue touch panel and metal frame with hardware buttons.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ORIGINAL-...arts_Tools&hash=item5aea0d4273#ht_3037wt_1163
White touch panel and metal frame with hardware buttonss.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ORIGINAL-...arts_Tools&hash=item5aea48657e#ht_4474wt_1163
Anyway so i have a white phone i ordered the white digitizer metal frame thingy it is quite expensive, When it arrived all i did was take my phone apart and take the important parts like the mic, motherboard, front facing camera and etc and swapped it into the new one and it works great again looks brand new as well.
Thanks that's what I'm looking for

Nexus 7 cracked glass replacement?

My sisters Nexus 7 was dropped today and I'm trying to get it fixed for her. The frame is dented up so I'm not sure if the replacement would fit anyways, but maybe. The glass is cracked pretty bad but the LCD still works fine. Problem is, the digitizer must be broken because it will not register any touches. She does not need a whole new screen assembly, because those are expensive, rather just the glass and digitizer. Do any of you guys know anything about replacing it? Thanks a lot for any help.

Sorry mate but on the nexus 7 the screen and digitizer are fused together. Bottom line, she needs entire screen/display. I haven't seen them hit the market yet.

They are on eBay but go for around $160. Might be cheaper to buy a new 8Gb and sell the broken one for parts. Seems like that's what a lot of folks are having to do.

Hi, did you find the replacement on Craiglist?? Today I broke mine..
I found just the glass and digitizer on eBay for less than 30 buck. Don't know how difficult this installation is gonna be but I'm up for resurrecting my Nexus 7.

The Ultimate Drop TEST!!!

So i just bought the note 2 a few weeks ago and desided to give me brand new never scratched mind condition S3 to my girlfriend. In 5 days she dropped it between the elevetor crack and fell down 9 floors !!!
When we finally found the phone (thanks to the elevetor guy) i checked the phone several times in detail and found that the only thing that was broken was the glass in front of the screen the screen worked perfectly (i could still use the phone btw touch worked) .
Samsung i love you..
https://www.dropbox.com/s/3ae1cwm6z6ugx4j/20121024_153106.jpg heres a pic of the phone (cant upload to xda for some reason..)
So she dropped her phone through the 1inch gap between the floor and the elevator....really??

(Apologies to XKCD)
I dropped mine to a hard ground from normal standing height and I thought it was bad enough until I saw yours.
Anyway mine just got some unnoticeable scratch and works perfectly.
That kind of robustness could only be found in older Nokia phones. :good:
We wannt see pics.... We want pics.....with the elevator crack and the screen !!!
Hmmmm sorry I don't seem to believe your story, I smell troll

Impossible. The Elevator crack is too small..and i dont think that the phone drops exactly into it -.-
Such pessimists, I've seen old school elevators where there are couple inch gaps and you can see all the way down. I believe the guy, and if it's fake, with a mind like that, he should be writing literature

I think I believe him!
Well, kudos to Samsung, I suppose. The only weak spot on our phone is made my Corning. (>_>)
I love Samsung and I believe S3 is pretty resistant. Depends on how is dropped. But she should had very bad luck and dropped the phone on the bezel in order to fit that space between elevator... that's why I want to see the elevator.

dropped mine on the treadmill @ 10km/h...shot out pretty quick...thank God for screen protectors lol...
Dropped mine from a pub roof, survived with minor chips off the corner,
As for the elevator, did your phone grow wings on the way down and did you or the other half take any funny looking tablets before this all happened?

9 floors? really? is someone willing to perform a Myth Buster? i surely wont because due to physics, there would be more damaged..unless it had on an iron man suit.
my friend dropped his while walking and the phone bounced and flipped many times, the battery cover popped off and the bezel was effed. messed up part about it, it happened right after he purchased it from the phone store.

How hard to replace the glass on the back over the camera?

My daughter just dropped her less than a week old phone in the grass and somehow managed to fracture the glass at the top where the camera is. Of course, no insurance. She found a replacement part for a reasonable price. I'm just wondering what is involved in replacing it.

All I can really find is the tear down which doesnt show the removal of that back glass. The way it looks though is that if you hit it with a heat gun you may be able to pry off... here's the tear down if you haven't saw it yet http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=G0dKEaIEqYY&desktop_uri=/watch?v=G0dKEaIEqYY

I agree, it seems like it's glued on... I'm just not sure how decent it will look when the new glass is on and the glue re-sets.
It would look better than shattered glass, at any rate.

Simple fix. They sell the back camera glass cover with adhesive on it. Break out the old glass and stick on the new. 5 mins max. If you need any further help send me a pm.

Best Buy Dilemma

Hi everyone,
So the other day, I noticed that my S8 had a straight line of multiple scratches from the iris camera to the bottom bezel. This was confusing since I only had the phone for a couple of hours, and have only put it in my pocket.
We took this to Best Buy, and they explained that "your pockets, fabric, etc., can scratch Gorilla Glass." Now this made no sense since it was a completely straight line, and no pockets of mine could've done that. There's not even a wallet in that pocket as well.
I wanted to take this to here to see if anyone else has seen this long line of scratches when they bought their S8, and also to see if anyone had the same problem with Best Buy.
I doubt very seriously that your pocket was able to scratch the display. I've always carried my phones in my pocket with no issues. There feeding you Bull. Look up on youtube for scratch and durability test and you'll see. Take it back and demand areplacement.

If you have sand in your pocket you can scratch gorilla glass very easy.
I'm not saying that is what happen to the OP, but that can happen any time.

Yes i agree, but right after buying the phone. I Highly doubt he had sand in his pocket. I could be wrong and he just got back from beach. But i would still go make them give a replacement, being its only been a couple hrs. If no replacement, then i would get money back and order another one.
