Got my Nexus 4 today, Sim card wont work? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've been using my Nokia Lumina 710 for a month now (it uses a Micro sim).
The sim works fine in the Nokia Lumina. When I put it in the Nexus 4 nothing happens.
It does not read it, it says "NO SIM CARD - EMRGECNY CALLS ONLY"
What do I do?
I installed it correctly in the phone.
Note: The Sim I used in the windows phone I CUT MY SELF
Solution: I went to a store and bought an actual Micro Sim that is already cut, and that worked fine.
The issue was that if you cut your own micro sim, it wont line up the gold part with the Nexus 4 properly, and will not be read.

Whose SIM card are you using? Have you tried using a SIM from another carrier?

i bought my nexus 4 about a month ago. it wouldnt get a signal with any sim card. i brought it back to the authorized tmobile dealer where i bought it the next morning, and they exchanged it for me right away. i was told that there is a known issue with not being able to read the sim. anyways, the n4 i received as an exchange i liked better
moral of the story, if you buy your device at a store(not online), have them activate your sim there, and stick it into the device before you leave.

I went to a store and bought a brand new micro sim, I guess the Nexus 4 didn't like the way I cut the old one I used on the Lumina. Been working fine since.

Your original post never mentioned that the sim was originally NOT a micro sim and that you cut it down. That would have been helpful info.

How about updating the OP to "User Error, nothing wrong with my wonderful N4."

I also got the same problem.
I think when you cut a mini-sim to Micro-SIM the metal part of the sim is little bit bigger than the original micro sim. This makes short circuit when you put it in the Sim tray of Nexus 4 (Which also metal). I just apply a sellotape to the sides of the sim and after that it worked for me.
Just give it a try

I had a problem with the Nexus refusing to connect to the mobile network. I fixed it by reflashing the modem firmware in CWM

New Streak

Hi
Tomorrow my new unlocked Streak arrives from Dell. I already have a jailbroken iPhone 4 and a rooted Sprint EVO 4G.
I have a Sim adapter so I can use my iPhone 4 Sim in the Streak. Any problem?
Next question. Should I do the Dell OTA 2.2 upgrade or install dj_steve's 1.5.2?
Thanks

why do you need a sim adapter? Serious question actually. I took my old sim out of my iPhone and tossed it into my Streak and it worked perfectly fine. Now I will say that if I try and do the reverse I no longer have the data on my iPhone. Still works as a phone however.

Iphone 4 is the first Apple phone that has a micro sim, its smaller than the regular sim cards as it only is the side of the metal contacts. The adapter adds the extra plastic to convert it back to regular size.

TMobile switching out Sim for New Nexus 4

I hope that my New Nexus 4 will be here tomorrow. I plan on switching out my Standard SIM to the Micro SIM for the Nexus 4, but I won't have the phone with me yet. Will the TMobile Store need the new phone with them in the store before they could switch out my sim?
No. Just tell them you need a micro sim

Was it a free upgrade to the Micro SIM? There are also rumors that there are two types of SIM cards now: non-ISIS T-Mobile SIM card and a ISIS T-Mobile SIM card. I heard that the ISIS T Mobile SIM card takes support off for Google Wallet.
I just cut my standard SIM to micro.
If you have been a customer with Tmo for awhile, they will give you the new Sim for free. Otherwise, it is a ~$10 charge. No need to take the phone with you, just go to the store and ask for a micro-sim. Then, just activate the sim once you get your phone via the web (website listed on the new card).
I activated my micro-sim online and it was active almost immediately as opposed to when I have called and spoke to a CSR (~ 2 hrs).

One time my SIM card wasn't functioning properly and didn't detect my phone # and all that. I called 611 and they offered a free SIM card replacement but I had to get it from a store. Went to like 4-5 different T-Mobile stores even though the person on the phone said that the store closest to me had them in stock and when I went there the person said that they didn't have any in stock. It was so frustrating getting a replacement that I felt that I was being lied to in my face about them not having SIM cards.
Regardless of that, my SIM card works fine as it is now. Just cutted my standard SIM card (from a few years back) into a micro-sim and works fine on the N4.
$10 is still a rip off for a SIM card, they can't be that much to produce -_-
I went in yesterday to a T-mobile store and they gave me and activated the micro sim for free he just asked for my ID
You can purchase a Micro-SIM off of T-Mobile's site for $0.99 + tax (free shipping). That's what I did and then I just activated it online once my Nexus 4 arrived.
They should be able to cut your existing sim card. They have Sim cutters which will turn it into micro. If you do get a new sim, do not get the Isis ready one. It won't work with Google wallet.

I previously had a normal sized card in Tmob on my Gnex. I usually got H speeds on it. Used an HTC one S (cut the sim) and almost always had H showing on the phone. Today I received my N4, its been perfect but now most of the time its 3G or very low reception. Is it the phone? or can it be the Sim card that I cut?
Thanks

I would think it might just be damage to the sim card from being cut and then taken in and out of different phones. Just get a micro some from T-Mobile. I called them and only paid 1.04 with tax and it was free over night shipping too. Put the next sim in my N4 and called customer server and they had it running in a matter of minutes.

I cut it with scissors, and it worked fine on a One S. Just to be sure the Tmob store gave me one for free. I still get very low speeds tho.

[Q] Do you recommend using a Micro sim cutter?

I got my N4 yesterday and i also ordered a micro sim cutter off Amazon.com
I'm on T-Mobile. Do you recommend that I try and use the cutter on it or just go and get an official sim?
What is the failure rate of the sim cutter?
If you have some old unused sims, check the cutter out on them first and make sure they work.
The cutter I got was rubbish, where the sim could move side to side in the device. But I worked out if I made sure it was right up against a certain edge the cut sims worked OK.
I just used my xacto knife to cut my SIM. You could also sand down the edges, so they're smooth. I'm sure a regular knife would work too. Just print the template at 100% scaling, mark, and cut away.
I first used scissors and a template I downloaded online. I lined it up and cut the sucker. It wasn't pretty but it worked on my N4 lol. But I had a mini one ordered from tmo that only cost me $1.07. Now I see that Tmo is selling them for 10bux on their website. Not horrible, but 10x what I paid lol. Maybe try your luck and call a few tmo stores to see if they can replace your existing sim with a micro sim? Price quote and get a full name of the person giving you that price quote!
You may even get one for free!

The one that I bought to cut the sim for my one x works perfect in my N4. But like others have said, make sure you don't have a cutter that's barely worth its weight.

Get an official micro sim.
If you can get an official micro sim then do it. You won't have to go through the hassle of cutting. If you're like me and your company doesn't offer micro sims then cut it. I cut mine and everything works fine

I have been cutting micro and nano SIMs with normal scissors and knife for forever. just print a template on the internet and cut away. There's little that can go wrong IMHO
Bought a cheap one off ebay (<$5) that came with adapters, it worked just fine and now I'm futureproofed with a micro sim that can be bumped up to a mini or a full size.
I receive it in the mail a few hours ago and it worked perfectly. Thanks you guy!

[HELP] My Nexus 4 Won't Read My Sim Card

Hey Guys
I bought my Nexus 4 the other day. Its my 2nd android phone still don't know much about android I switched from an iPhone to android. When I received my nexus 4 It had a MicroSIM card slot so I took the SIM from my HTC One which I cut myself from a template (works fine on the HTC One) and I Inserted It and It said Emergency calls only. I've tried flashing some roms but It didn't work. So I called up my carrier and asked them for an actual MicroSIM that was by them and they sent me one with the same Phone Number. But still No Luck with It. Any help?
Thanks

If the cards are cut from a regular SIM, you will have issues as the N4 is very picky about SIM cards. Search the forums, people have reported this issue. Only way around it is to use micro sim that are not cut from regular sims.
I hope you bought this brand new....

I had the same problem before. Cut my old sim card and it didn't work on N4. (The N4 was straight out of the box). It works on other phones though. So, I got myself a replacement micro sim for the previously cut sim but it still didn't work.
In the end, I went back to the service provider, bought a new sim (from the same provider, only different number), cut it to micro size, pops it in and voila! It works.
I was like, "eh?! You've got to be kidding me!". So yeah, my conclusion back then was that my N4 hates the old number. Hahahaha

Nexus 6 Nano SIM Card

Just a heads up to all who are purchasing the Nexus 6. It uses a Nano SIM card. The Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 use Micro SIM cards.
Get in touch with your carrier to have a Nano SIM on hand. I have mine from T-Mobile US ready, and can easily switch my micro SIM to nano SIM on the T-Mo US portal.

Anyone know if AT&T will give me a nano sim card without a device to use it in (to have on hand before my Nexus 6 gets here).
Will they have to activate it and thus deactivate the sim card in my Nexus 5 or can I call and have it activated once I'm ready? Come to think of it, is it possible to have both activated at the same time so I can switch between the two devices as necessary (while waiting for a case)?
Thanks!

Unless you get the phone from the carrier your going to have to go to a store and get a new sim, which they might charge you for, and have it activated. You won't be able to have both active with the same line but there are adapters that let you put a nano sim into a phone that uses micro sims.
You can turn the micro SIM into a nano by cutting the plastic around the gold contacts. If you don't trust yourself to do it manually, there are cheap cutting tools online specifically made for it.

Thank you guys - I just bought a Nano to Micro adapter on Amazon just in case. I won't take my Nexus 6 to work if I don't have a case for it and the cases may be a little delayed after the phone is released...so I'll want to be able to swap between my Nexus 5 and 6 for the first week or two.
Got at least 30 notifications from pushbullet.. but ordered nothing... and where is the white 64GB!!!!

I just cancelled my order on Amazon after reading that someone was able to walk into AT&T without their phone and request a nano sim. AT&T gave them an adapter as well. Free sounds much better than $6!
Why go to the effort of trimming when you can just walk in and get one or call and order a nano SIM and adapter from your carrier? Do some carriers charge for them?

I needed a nano sim when I got my last phone. I went to the AT&T store before my phone arrived and they wouldn't give me one. They told me it was a new policy and that I had to have my new phone with me. I was so pissed.
I went home and did an online chat with AT&T reps and gave them a sad story and they eventually agreed to ship one out with 2-day shipping.

Takes less time: no need to drive to a store and deal with salesmen.
For t-mobile, sometimes they will charge you and sometimes they won't for getting a new sized sim. You could get those slickdeals for t-mobile sims for 1 cent and activate one of those over the phone. They just need to verify your account and need the sim number.

A phone call is pretty quick, though.
I have a Premier business account with AT&T, maybe that's why it's so much smoother for me than what others are saying.
I always walk into my local AT&T store if I need a different size SIM card no questions asked no charge, done.
Ordered a couple from T-Mobile a few weeks ago. $2.12. For 2 of them. ?
My Att store doesn't care they will give you a Sim no questions asked for free, they guy have me 3 once because I said I wanted to have a spare one.
