USB Mass Storage Issues - Vibrant

When I plug my Vibrant in by USB on WinXP I am getting a device not recognized error. I get nothing when plugging into a Mac. I've tried multiple cables and I have changed the USB options to each option.
I have rooted the phone and installed the GPS fix.
Any suggestions for fixing this would be appreciated.

What about for Mac OS? The phone doesn't show up when I mount the cards. Is there a way to get mass storage to work on a Mac that doesn't involve turning on USB debugging?

I'm not a mac person, sorry, hopefully someone else can chime in on that.

When you plug it in are you sliding down the notification bar and selecting the USB Connected > Mount option?
As well when you are done you have to Unmount when you are done.

Yes, I had a G1 for years and that always worked perfectly. The only way to get my Vibrant to show up though is to use USB debugging mode.

I just did some quick googling and it seems mac users are doing exactly what you said you don't want to do, setting usb debugging on, and that seems to be a quick fix. I'm sure there is more info out there in cyberspace, but if debugging works, I say go with it. I always have debugging turned on, incase I need that oops adb action.

With the OP having one post who knows if he/she really knew it had to be mounted. LOL Figured it wouldn't hurt just to mention just in case.

When i use it on my Mac, i have to enable USB debugging. Then both drives (internal and SD) pop up just fine.
So it looks like someone answered this, just confirmation then.

Another theory
My Vibrant has mounted normally and without any problems on WinXP sp3 and Win7-64 systems, but I have also run into the occasional system where it will not work at all.
On the systems where things worked normally it was never required that I load a special Samsung USB driver for the phone. The standard mass storage drivers included with Windows worked fine.
My new theory is that there may be a drive letter collision issue in some cases. On the laptop that I use with my phone 90% of the time the phone always mounts as drive G: and H:.
On other machines I have noticed that the phone always seems to mount as G: and H: even if E: and F: are available. I'm not sure how/why it always gets mounted using those letters. It may somehow be defaulting to that because G: and H: were the first letters available on the first system I plugged it into.
I have a Win7-64 desktop machine that will not currently allow the phone to connect. This particular machine already has G: and H: assigned to hard drive partitions.
I will probably experiment with temporarily changing the letter assignments to see if I can get the phone to mount. It's worth a shot I guess.

Sorry, I didn't go into as much detail as I could have.
I've installed those drivers listed here as well as any other I could find. I've tried USB debugging mode, changed all the USB modes listed. I've mounted and unmounted the SD cards using the settings menu when doing this.
Is it possible that there is some background service that should be running? Or is it possible that something in the firmware is screwed up? I guess it's also possible that the USB plug itself is messed up?

I used to use this forum years ago when I had a HTC WinMo phone, it seems to have lost any record of past posts due to inactivity.

As kizer stated in his post, are you mounting from the prompt on your phone's notification bar? Once plugged into your pc or mac, you slide down the notification bar from the top of your home screen, click on the usb prompt then select mount. Thats the only step you didn't list that may have been missed.
Edited - the prompt in the notification area may say mass storage, my home pc fried last week so i cant test it to get you the specific verbage.

I don't get any prompt at all. At this point I will just install CM6.1 when it comes out and hope that fixes the issue. It's usable for now. I can transfer files using WiFi File Explorer for now.

It helps if you know if you are USB 1.0 or 1.1 or 2.0....or even 3.0.
Also, are the USB ports powered ?
Are the USB ports on the computer in question filled with dust and dirt ?
Contacts corroded ?
Are the ports recognized by the operating system correctly (you know, drivers loaded since it's old arsed WinXP) ?
Do you undertand how to operate a computer at a higher level than just being able to install viral apps ?
Malware ?
Trojans ?
I could go on all day.
It works fine here, on Win7x64, WinVistax64, and *nix.

That is bizarre you should get a least something in your taskbar.

I did have a freind who didn't realize he could pull down the notification bar. Could that be the case here?
Op, you do know you can pull down the bar at the top of your screen, the one with your clock and battery icon etc., put your finger up there and swipe in a downward motion.

I have tried this on a corporate IT managed WinXP system (running Kapersky AntiVirus) and a currently updated Snow Leopard MacBook. I could give details all day as well. Both are in good condition and very likely not the issue.
Seriously, if you have nothing useful to say don't say anything at all.

they don't understand i had this issue too man and i fixed it.
first go to that link and download those drivers... use the uninstall app to uninstall the drivers off your computer.
while your doing that go into your phone setting>applications>usb settings
make sure it says "ask on connection" (you can change it later) go back and go to development to turn on usb debugging.
reinstall drivers, connect phone wait for the drivers to load. the un-connect phone turn debugging off.
and it was fixed for me.

3.1 & USB Peripherals

I know that 3.1 added support for a broader spectrum of USB devices, and I thought it would be interesting to compile a list of what works and doesn't work!
So far, I've tried:
ACER LIQUID E - Basically just charges the phone and allows for tethering (wish I could mount it) **UPDATE** After rooting and installing busybox and drive mount, Liquid E is able to mount! (Thanks, entropy)
HP WIRELESS MINI KEYBOARD (Model #U10G) - Works flawlessly! Prior to the update, only the keyboard worked, but now the mouse works too, as expected!
SONY CYBERSHOT (Model #DSC-W55) - At first the Iconia didn't detect it, but after I went into the camera menu and changed USB connect mode from "auto" to "mass storage" and plugged it back into the tablet, the Gallery app opened automatically and the pics from the camera magically appeared! Woohoo!
LOGITECH ATTACK 3 JOYSTICK - Not too useful, but it works! Basically it works as a glorified mouse, scrolling up/down/left/right. Pretty basic for now, but perhaps a good flight simulator will come out in the future?
SAMSUNG STORY STATION 1 TB HARD DRIVE - My biggest disappointment... I know there are workarounds to get external drives to work, but I was hoping 3.1 would provide a fix for this. It is formatted FAT32, so I'm not sure what the problem is, but my Iconia isn't picking it up **UPDATE** After rooting and installing busybox and drive mount, Story Station is able to mount! (Thanks, entropy)

I can confirm the iphone 3gs will charge and you can import photos/movies taken on the camera.
I have a cannon camera at home. I know they have a strange interface which always requires me to load a separate driver in windows. I will test it later and let you know.

Assuming you are rooted - try "drive mount" (free from market) - solved all my USB storage device problems.

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind. I'm not currently rooted, but I'll likely take that plunge soon. I was hoping 3.1 would cure that in the stock software, but we can't always get what we want

How ironic that an iProduct will work as a peripheral, but not another Acer product!
*edit* Just tested my old BLACKBERRY CURVE 8310 and it mounts no problem! Wtf?

Rooting stock 3.1 takes about ten seconds - i have successfully ran a Logitech laser mouse, a Saitek Eclipse 2 keyboard, a old crappy external 60gb USB hdd, and a 16gb flash stick all at once

Does a non powered usb hub work??

Using a non powered hub as I type - 4 devices connected, including a sweet keyboard with led back lighting (saitek eclipse 2) - all 4 devices work even if I am not connected to power.

Is there an * easy * way to make this tab use huwaei dongle for internet...???

No idea - would probably involve a rooted device and a custom rom - head to the dev section.

Logitech mx510 and mx518 mice confirmed.
Xbox 360 wired controller works but found no games that use it and it is very clunky for nav'ing the UI in general.
Wacom Bamboo powers but nothing functions.

A "safe" way? I'm pretty sure it won't explode if you just unplug them.
In all seriousness, you should be able to just unplug them without losing data. At least I always have.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the reason you have to "eject" removable media from windows is because windows has some sort of drive caching to speed things up. This means that just because you have copied a file to your usb drive, doesn't mean the data has actually been written right away.
Furthermore, Windows also locks out files that are in use by an active application. As such, windows makes you "eject" the media in order to give the OS a chance to check to see if any of the files are still in use, to avoid the application having a brain fart and crashing. Also, if an application is in the process of writing to a file and you yank out the drive, the file could become corrupt.
I think both scenarios are not likely to occur on an Android tablet, mainly because its based on a real operating system not designed to treat you like an idiot. Just make sure none of the data is being used by any open apps and you should be fine.
That being said, always make sure to keep backups.

Stock GS3 annoyances

We all know we have a pretty good phone but nothing is ever perfect so I thought I'd start a thread where we can identify the little (or big) things that frustrate us about the GS3. Feel free to chime in if you have any of your own, or workarounds for any problems that are listed.
1. Notification settings are spread all over the place and there is no single place where you can adjust ringtones, email notifications, SMS notifications, notifications when on a call etc. Very counterintuitive.
2. Lack of official accessories despite a lot of marketing hype at launch
3. Stock email app won't stick to "Combined View" when configured with more than one account. It keeps switching back to displaying a single account.
4. Wifi refuses to roam between access points, even if the AP it's connected to has barely any signal and there's another one in range with excellent signal strength
5. If you are in a quiet room and get a new email notification while on a call it affects the noise canceling on the phone and makes you sound like you're locked in a closet.
6. Internal/External sd card setup is a mess
7. No generic USB storage mode

Every phone has its quirks, bro. It's like dating a victoria's secret model who has a missing finger...at the end of the day, she's still a damn hot model.

When you say there is no usb storage mode are you saying you can't plug in the device to a computer and drag and drop files? That's insane why would they take that feature away? This must be because of that MTP crap. Is that because of Samsung or is it stock Android behavior?

They didn't. If you install samsung USB driver (included with KIES), you can drag and drop to your heart's content.

File transfers are seemingly slower, can only do one thing at a time (I think if your transferring a file, you can't even browse other folders on the MTP device), and sometimes file transfers just get stuck for no reason. Was trying to copy over a few PDF's to my N10 and it seems to just hang randomly, had to reboot the device 4 times already (twice to just create and rename a folder).

I had the same problem at first, but I realized my USB ports on the front end of my PC arent USB 2.0, so I plugged it into the back, and works like a charm. Just a thought.

My N10 is rooted and my computer runs xubuntu 12.04; I don't have a window box to test... Any suggestions? Thanks!

Unfortunately the answer is no.
There was a long discussion on the Galaxy Nexus forums about it a while back.
I also wish for a usb mass storage option for compatibility with radios for playing music. They don't read mtp/ptp for any generic one I've come across.

Hmm, but what's the main thing stopping this from being possible? I thought I heard of a few JB devices that were able to get USB Mass Storage (LG Optimus G I think has a method, or whatever the phone is that has similar parts to a Nexus 4), and a Galaxy Tab I used to have had Mass Storage in ICS.

Mass storage is possible when the sdcard volume is actually a separate disk. On the Nexus 10 this is an "emulated" sdcard and cannot use USB mass storage safely because that protocol gives exclusive control to PC.
The easiest solution is to use one of the many wireless transfer apps like AirDroid.
Another option for Linux users if you really want a wired transfer is to use adbfs. This is a FUSE wrapper around the usb android debug protocol.
https://github.com/spion/adbfs-rootless
adbfs would give you seamless mounting just like USB Mass Storage.
Another solution, though not a seamless mount, is QtADB: http://qtadb.wordpress.com/

dear espionage,
i just wanted to share this with you in case it would be helpful. in fact, you might even have more technical know-how to find out how i accidentally managed this useful fix. first, the reason i was looking for this MTP to USB storage was my habit of synchronizing my thumb-drive to my desktop using any free synching software. this of course, can be only be done when the storage device is recognized as a DRIVE. unfortunately, i believe with the updating of the OS to 4.1 onwards, the USB storage option has been removed, and now only access to MTP is possible. the bad side to this is that one's device is recognized as a portable media device and this means i can no longer synch like i did before the contents of the SD card to my desktop.
second, i found the solution accidentally by installing MultiMount-SD v.2.5 into my Sony Xperia V (LT25i). accidentally i say, because when i clicked on it for the first time, it wouldn't work. it showed a help tip saying that i should trying enabling what it called an MTP fix provided by the program. i did this, restarted the program and guess what happened. there occurred a looping sequence (i guess unending) device recognition-mount and unmount (the PC sounded this off many times), since there was no end to it, i decided to UNINSTALL the program even while the recognition loop was going on. in the meantime one could see a drive appearing in the EXPLORER with a (?), then it would appear with an assigned drive letter, then finally disappear, and so on.
i successfully uninstalled the MultiMount apk, and surprisingly even with the message that the device wasn't properly recognized or installed, i could now connect my Xperia and it mounts as a USB storage device and no longer MTP. to test this 'accident', i tried connecting it to my desktop, running Windows 7, and it worked without any hitches! I don't really mind losing the MTP option, sides it's very limited in its connectivity with the PC. Another bonus, is despite this, i can still communicate with my device through the MyPhoneExplorer program that allows one to send text messages and other stuff. This was one wonderful accident.
oh, one last thing, even with rebooting my phone, the setup seems to have become a 'permanent fix'. now, when the device is connected one sees in the activated portions in the top menu saying: USB Storage - SD card connected to PC. This was never there before... And i wonder what MultiMountSD must have left permanently to allow my Xperia V to now connect as USB storage. Yahoo!!!
i hope though, you could see what the technical side of this accident is, so that somehow something more stable could be done or programmed without having to go through the 'accidental' procedure i have detailed above.

I had this issue with Ubuntu 12.04 too, after I updated to 13.04 it started to work like a charm . You can also try changing the rules in your PC, you can find how to do it in the Google website .

*I also would like to apologize what i've posted earlier regarding my accidental discovery with Multi-Mount SD. What the app actually did was to access a feature in my device (rooted Xperia V LT125i) which i wasn't aware of. All the time, my device was actually configured to have both MTP and USB Storage.:silly:
So for such devices that are hardware configured only to be MTP or PTP, the only 'solution' or 'alternative' would be to "ROOT" them and set them up with OTG (On the Go) USB access. This may have some hitches, but i've been using this quite a lot. Sometimes though, a RESET is required so that explorer applications would function normally.
Thanks again. I guess this will be all for now in our attempts to reconfigure something that is hardware defined in certain devices.

[Mass storage is possible when the sdcard volume is actually a separate disk. On the Nexus 10 this is an "emulated" sdcard and cannot use USB mass storage safely because that protocol gives exclusive control to PC.]
*I also would like to apologize what i've posted earlier regarding my accidental discovery with Multi-Mount SD. What the app actually did was to access a feature in my device (rooted Xperia V LT125i) which i wasn't aware of. All the time, my device was actually configured to have both MTP and USB Storage.:silly:
So for such devices that are hardware configured only to be MTP or PTP, the only 'solution' or 'alternative' would be to "ROOT" them and set them up with OTG (On the Go) USB access. This may have some hitches, but i've been using this quite a lot. Sometimes though, a RESET is required so that explorer applications would function normally.
Thanks again. I guess this will be all for now in our attempts to reconfigure something that is hardware defined in certain devices.

You're welcome. Chainfire is a great and well known developer that has development many great apps including Stickmount. Look it up in Play especially the Pro version, which is "The price is aimed at being approximately one beer at the bar ". It works with mounting the UBS OTG. The Pro will automatically mount and unmount.

Connecting to MAC via USB ???

Well it's official, I'm at my wits end trying to figure out just how to connect my Note 10.1 to my Macbook Air connecting via USB cable. Every time I connect the two, I can't find it ANYWHERE on my laptop !!!
Anyone else experience this all too frustrating conundrum???

Android file transfert works fine. Do NOT install the Samsung USB driver from kies this Is complete ****. airdroid is **** too you can't even copy a folder. ah don't forget to disable USB debbug otherwise aft won't detect your device.

I've never been able to see any of my Android devices on my Mac without using Android File Transfer & I believev that's the way things just are.

The problem is that Android only presents itself over USB as either a media device using MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) or PTP (PrinterTransfer Protocol) standards - settable in settings. It does not support USB Mass Storage protocol.
Windows supports MTP out of the box for Media Player, so when you connect your Android to it - it shows up as what looks like, for all intents and purposes, a hard drive. In the Note's case - you get two: one for the internal simulated 'SD' card - and one for the actual SD card reader. This is why when you copy files to and from the Note, the experience is a little weird - it will offer to convert files for you, for example.
Unfortunately, MacOS X doesn't support MTP because, I suspect, Apple wants everyone using iDevices and their proprietary iTunes protocols which aren't compabtible with MTP.
Now, while it's dumb of Google not to support USB Mass Storage in Android, it's equally dumb of Apple not to support MTP in their OS.
Fortunately, there are addons you can get to fix this (as noted above).
Windows users (and I suspect, Linux ones as well) don't have a problem.

It's not across the board android, just the tablets. All my phones up to the note 2 would connect as mass storage even with exchange installed. Even the og note

I've just found an app called ES file explorer. Set up your Mac as a smb server and you can access your files via wifi. Much faster than blue tooth.
A video file transfer from my macbook to my note 10.1 took 4 hours, similar file via wifi took about 5 mins.
Still testing the app, but quite pleased so far.

Kinda. I don't think my Galaxy Nexus phone shows up in MacOS either (it's been a while since I checked so I could be wrong).
To complicate matters, each vendor adds bits to the OS. For example, Asus Transformer Primes can read NTFS drives out of the box - but most Androids can't. They've added something to the kernel to add the capability.
AFAIK, the base Android doesn't support USB Mass Storage on the host port.

Did u try to mount the drives in recovery? I'm assuming your rooted
