Hi all,
A cursory search didn't turn up any results here, so sorry if this is a duplicate post.
My a500 took a bit of pressure in my briefcase and the glass on the front cracked from corner to corner. The display is fine, touch works perfectly, there's just a crack across the front that's a bit distracting.
My question: What is this piece called? Is it the digitizer? Is there just a piece of protective glass across the top? Where can I get one?
Thanks!

The digitizer is actually underneath the glass.
You should be able to find parts on E-Bay.

The digitizers on eBay prob aren't gorilla glass, right? Can you get replacement that is real?
Did you replace it or not? i am interested in how you brake it considering it is gorilla glass. How much force need to brake it?
dropping Gorillia Glass in the wrong angle will break it!
True. Mine got dropped on the upper left edge of the phone(and it was from the height of 1m or less) and it got shaterd. Now I am searching for replacement. The phone and the screen still work but it just looks ugly.
edit* my post doesn't apply for this thread lol but it seems defy is brickproof also.
yes it can broke, it's just scratch resistant, not broke-into-pieces resistant.
Yep, I can confirm it's not shatterproof!
Hi everyone,
I just received my new digitizer from Ecell and it's glass, not plastic, so so far so good.
However, does anyone know how to fit it to the phone ? I'm not sure if it comes with adhesive or not (didn't look at it in detail) and how to remove the old digitizer without damaging the phone ?
thanks,
Arnaud.
If I'm not mistaken someone here in XDA had already open up the Defy. Search and you find it. But you will need to replace the front casing as well once you opened up your Defy..
Or you can follow this site guide Here
Ok everyone, I looked into this a bit deeper.
The digitizer I got from ebay selle Ecell looks genuine. It has the same serial number as the original and everything looks exactly the same. For those looking for a genuine Gorilla Glass replacement digitizer, I think we've found it.
There is no adhesive though and I am still looking for something suitable.
Farsight, you DONT have to replace the front casing once you've opened up the Defy. Or at least I don't see why you should.
Anyway, I'll keep you up to date as soon as my defy is back in action.
Cheers,
Arnaud.

If I'm not mistaken, the idea for changing the front casing is to ensure the phone remains water resistant.
Trying to replace broken gorilla glass
Here is a video of me trying to replace the broken glass on my Defy. The replacement was successful although the final result got dirty from the glue I used.
A better solution would be to replace the whole front housing with speaker, glass and digitizer. Anyone knows where one can by a complete Defy front housing?
I bought mine from no.1-tech on ebay and it looks genuine to me, too. Did yours come in a plastic bag that says "resealable" and has a sort of glue strip to close it?
Btw, globaldirectparts has everything, the digitizer, the adhesive, complete front and back housing etc. but the minimum amount of 5pcs per item is kind of a turn-off...
Yes, mine came in a resealable plastic bag with a glue strip as well.
I ended up buying some two sided tape and I cut strips to fit where the original adhesive was. It all looks very clean but now the proximity sensor doesn't work properly and the screen turns off whenever I make or answer a call. It turns back on when I press on the screen in the top left hand corner. I tried searching for a way to recalibrate the proximity sensor but I haven't found anything that works on the Defy.
If anyone has any idea on how to do this (and I'm pretty sure it's possible), could you please let everyone know?
Thank you
Cheers,
Arnaud.
I found this one.

From the video. Best still to change the whole front casing together with the glass screen. It's very dirty in the end and surely the water resistant would not work anymore.
Did your Defy managed to power up? I see the video look like it's dead??
Sent from my awesome Moto Defy Gingerbread 2.3.3 - XDA Premium
Yes, the phone did power up - battery was empty.
The phone is working ok but, as you mentioned, the glass got very dirty. Using another type of glue and being a bit more exact when fixing the new glass to the front housing might have given better result.
As for the water reistance I'm already convinced that the defy is water resistant but the front speaker is not. Already got two front speakers replaced because of water damage.
I'm looking for a front housing with glass and speaker. I've already tried to replace the speaker om another defy but that was not so easy because the speaker is glued to the front.
I'm in the process of fixing an evo that had a broken charge port, and was scratched up pretty bad on the front frame, and there was dust under the screen. I removed the digitizer, and took out the LCD. I have a new front frame, and notice the adhesive for the digitizer is only on the top and bottom of the glass, where the ear speaker and capacitive buttons are. Is this the way the digitizer is attached from the HTC factory?
I have another evo I bought on release day, and I haven't had one spec of dust get in, and it lives in my pocket, so if this is how it was done from the factory, I won't be concerned. But I just wanted to make sure.
I believe the ifixit teardown also only showed adhesive at the top and bottom of the frame.
It's top and bottom. I usually add more on the sides if it feels a bit loose. But that's just me trying to satisfy picky customers.
I found the digitizer adhesive, and it does cover the entire perimeter. Just ordering the front frame only has adhesive on the top and bottom. I figured I'd play it safe, to make sure there's almost no chance of dust getting between the digitizer and the lcd.
which is where did you get the adhesive. also looking for some help fixing my port.

No idea, Sprint ASC's aren't allowed to solder.

Are you in a corporate location or ISC?
I recently had my Galaxy S4 screen replaced because it was cracked. Now I'm having trouble with the touch. I can't move apps around in the middle section all the way across the screen. It's also not registering if I press letters in the same region unless I press fairly firm. What What could What could thus be?
A bad touch screen. Get a new one.
You Need New touch screen
,cheap touch screen make you lost more money
Touch screen what? The S4 and all other AMOLEDs don't have seperate touchscreen digitizer. You probably got a big gap between the actual screen and the glass you replaced.
The way to confirm the actual screen is defective you have to remove the glass you replaced and try to touch directly on the screen if it's ok.

They are seperated, they are just glued together and can be separated.

Nope dude. The glued glass on top of the screen is just protective glass. It doesn't work as touchscreen digitizer. Try it yourself, you can touch your screen even when you seperate the glass.

That's just a glass on top of the display man. Do you see any wires or something? I don't. How could it transmit any data about touch then?
The touch digitizer and the screen is both on the display of AMOLEDs. The glass you Crack is just. .. glass

Aha, ok learned something new today.
Hello Everyone,
I am trying to find the replacement bezel for my S4.
Mine is the silver bezel/frame.
I can't figure out if it's 1 or 2 pieces I need.
The top corner of mine is chipped, piece of plastic broke off.
It looks like you can replace just the top piece the screen touches.
Can someone please link to ebay the bezel I need (silver please).
Thanks!
I think separating the frame from the LCD/glass is not easy. I suggest looking at some youtube video before deciding to make the attempt.
Would a case cover the frame damage?

maybe
it's on the top right corner closest to the glass that thin strip
I like my Samsung case, flip open cover.
I use a spigen hybrid case on mine and it hides the chips in the bezel
Hi everybody,
some time ago I dropped my X Style and a tiny crack appeared in the bottom left angle... The phone is still perfect in everything else, it's not worth it to replace the screen for something like this... It's just a little ugly.
Then I found this on ebay:
"MOTOROLA MOTO X STYLE BLACK SCREEN DISPLAY GLASS OUTER LENS DIGITIZER XT1572
This is just the outer lens, not the digitizer" (I cannot post links, but you can reach it by using "mJnRmL" code in the google url shortener)
But I'm not sure what "lens" and "digitalizer" refers to... Is it the whole external glass replacement, or just the borders or something else?
And if it's the whole glass, do you think is safe (and worth it) to perform the replacement by myself, or maybe pay same shop to do it for me?
Thank you in advance!
The glass is glued to the screen. Unless you have experience with separating glass from the display on phones, followed by applying a fresh coat of LOCA Glue, and using a UV light to cure it, I'd just go for the whole assembly. The digitizer is under the glass, above the display.
It's not the same phone, but here's a video of how it's done:
