android is upgrading on boot - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi i previously had a sony xperia s and when i rooted it and everytime i powered it on i used to say android is upgrading and would scan through my apps and this also happens to my mums galaxy s2. so i wanted to know that when rooting the nexus 4 does that happen as well and if it does how do you remove it.
thanks

It sounds like your dalvik cache was being wiped at boot and thus had to be rebuilt every time. Were you using V6 supercharger?

No, it shouldn't. Rooted mine a few days ago and I believe the updating thing only happened on the first reboot. Haven't seen it since. It will show up each time you flash a new ROM and then after installing a new app and rebooting. At least my Galaxy Exhibit always did.

android is upgrading is your dalvik getting rebuilt. you either have a mod that is doing this or you are using a root app that has wiping the dalvik as a feature thats enabled. since it happens on your sony too, im willing to bet its the same app that you are using on both devices.

Simms is right (when isn't he ). There is probably a root app building your dalvik cache on reboot. It's been happening to me too. I Googled a little and found out TiBU was causing it. I uninstalled it and reinstalled and everything is fine now.

Thanks

[Q] "Unfortunately, System UI has stopped"

I am currently trying out Glazed Jelly Bean which I really like. I have one slight problem: I get this pop up saying "Unfortunately, System UI has stopped". Nothing actually happens and the device carries on functioning perfectly. Is there a way of fixing this? Using the emulator perhaps? Or do I have to do a clean install, which I'd rather avoid? Thanks for any help!
Hi mate,
You could extract the systemui.apk from the glazed jelly bean ROM and push it the system/apps. This will replace the old one, It might fix it.
It shouldn't delete any data, I've changed it multiple times on my Arc and it never deleted any of my data

since i flashed x-beam, my phone keep getting this error. help
Surprised no one said yet....but clean installs are always recommended. If you dirty flash you may have problems. Most won't get into helping trouble shoot much until you've tried a clean install.
Titanium backup along with an SMS backup app if you care about saving msgs really makes a clean install fairly painless.
BTW, if you dirty flashed over a different rom, then you're lucky that's your only problem. Can have major problems dirty flashing over anything other than a previous version of the same rom.
Sent from my cell phone telephone....
Last September, when I had this problem, I had done a clean install, and I did several clean installs of Glazed, + tried what had been suggested, but the problem remained. Eventually, I went for a different ROM, which was a shame, but then the problem stopped. So yes, clean installs can help, but not always...

Totally agree ....but kinda sounds like you dirty flashed over something other than a previous version of the same rom. That's a pretty huge no no! Lol
K...noob moment too.....didn't look at the dates of this thread. LOL.

Random reboot

I'm still on my stock ROM with just root permissions and I'm getting random reboots every once in a while. Before I was rooted I had one or maybe random reboots that I remember and one of the times it just reboot while it was in my pocket. I rooted my phone two days ago and since then my phone has randomly rebooted itself about 4 times already. I had the two mods added which were the touch screen and video bitrate mod. After I seen it happen more than usual after adding those mods I reverted back to stock. I was wondering if anyone else is having these types of issues maybe perhaps a bug in the stock 4.2.1.

might be a widget. a lot of people are having luck with the franko kernel. but his r16 build released earlier today started giving people random reboots. he either has it fixed already or is in the middle of doing so. the r15 build that i am on is great. but i would wait for the 16. the changelog looked pretty good.

I saw an article from android authority that said Google is aware of the random. Reboots and working on a fix soon. I just reed that after the post.
Can I flash francos kernel on my stock ROM ? Won't that cause problems. ?

wouldn't hurt to wipe anyway. ill stop wiping and see if i notice a difference though, so far i dont notice any. so id probably just skip out on wiping as it does seem useless because my phone still feels the same

TWRP: Crashes restoring or wiping /data

Hi all,
Issue with TWRP and restore. I've got a backup, but when I tried to restore it, it would crash and reboot while restoring the /data partition. I try wiping the /data partition (I have my backup on a server, too) and it crashes midway through that, too. Just reboots and returns to TWRP.
What should I do?
Thanks,
Ben

Tried that, no luck
I'm currently restoring the factory 4.2.2, then installing TWRP and adb'ing the files back over to try restoring again. Hopefully this works.
Thanks,
Ben

This issue is mentioned over in the official TWRP forum under "Original Android Development" The Dev acknowledged it, saying he needs to fiddle with it... Might not be bad if you poked your head in there with any other information you could add...
*fingers crossed* Hope they get it patched up soon... I'm a little restore shy now. Up until I encountered this, I was swapping ROMs on a nearly daily basis... No anymore.
I started over again, like you, and it works ok now. But I don't know when/if the problem will rear its ugly head again, so holding off until I hear more.

I'm having the same problem with 2.5.5.0. Happens probably 30% of the time and always during the data restore. It completes on the second go-round, but I'm constantly holding my breath. I was under the impression that this was taken care of in this latest version.

happens about 30% of the time too
I had that happen a lot, I just 2.3.3.0 now and it is perfect.

Ain't it the truth.
So I just tried doing the same with my phone and the installation failed, something about illegal instruction. I'm running CM 10.1 on an unlocked, S-OFF HTC Vivid.
Any ideas?

No, I tried with RomToolbox, same method as with the N10. I choose 2.3.3 0 from the list, so I assume it was the Holiday version. The first time I tried, it claimed I didn't have permission, but I think that was because it was the first time I was using Rom toolbox since flashing CM so the permission popup came after the fact. I rebooted and that was when the message changed to invalid instruction.
Edit: Tried again with 2.4.1.0. Same result. But I located the files and they are holiday, so I can just flash with fastboot, I guess.

CM 10.1 random reboots and freezes

Little background - been running cm7 for a long time. Flashed the alpha/beta builds when cm10 work started. The alpha worked well, but as the betas progressed and then the nightlies came, the constant freezing and random rebooting basically made the nook unusable. A sd card install experienced the same issues. Since no one else seemed to be experiencing these issues, I just went back to çm7 and have used that since.
Flash forward to today, thought I'd give a stable 10.1.2 a try. Same issues, if it doesn't reboot or freeze on the cm boot screen then it will do it in the setup screen. Wiped data/cache of course. Anyone experienced these issues or have any ideas on a solution? It'd be nice to experience some jellybean goodness. Thanks.

Only thing I could add is that when I flash a new rom, I boot up into that rom before I go back into TWRP and flash gapps. I have never had the issues you describe. I see you are coming from CM7. That takes a Factory Reset along with a wipe of Cache and Dalvik Cache.

Did the last suggestion help? I added it later so you might have missed it but I'm sure you not performing a Factory Reset when flashing is the root of your problem.

Pure Nexus ROM

I installed Pure Nexus on my Nexus 6P the other day. I was using the phone as stock for the past couple of months. I'm an old user of CM mind you.
Since the last 2 days, Ive had nothing but problems with the ROM. I've got several apps that keep crashing,, namely Minimalistic Text, Camera and others. This never happened at all on stock. Even when I use Airdroid to scan the QR code, it uses the wrong camera.
Unfortunately, I've decided to flush Pure Nexus and just in the middle of flashing CM 13 and will try it in a few minutes.
I think I've given enough time for Pure Nexus, but I can't blame the apps that I'm using, as I've used them before on various ROMs on my old Nexus 4 without incident as well as on my Nexus 7.
I've tried to post in another forum thread but since I'm unable to as I haven't posted many times, the forum has driven me here instead.

Hey Barry,
After you flashed Pure Nexus ROM, did you delete the cache? I would try it again, since things can go wrong and others are on Pure Nexus without issue.

Maybe grab some logs of these apps crashing and post them on pure nexus thread.

the apps you are having issues with, did you restore those from a backup (i.e. Titanium Backup)? If so i'd clear the app data/cache and force close them. Typically that helps.
I've lost everything since I've put in a different ROM, but have contacted the developers of the apps of my problem. After mant apps crashing, I decided that it was futile to contact the developers as I realized it was due to the ROM and not the apps I was using, as I've used them before without problems

If I were you, I would try again. Download the ROM and verify that is the correct checksum. Like I said, others here have Pure Nexus without issue.
did a hashcheck [md5] of all files as I usually do. Now I'm even having problems flashing new ROMs since in the last hour or so. I've made a backup of Pure Nexus ROM, so I know I'm able to use it, but might have to do other things here in the next couple of days to get rid of it

I guarantee you it was not due to the rom. If it was others would be reporting the same thing you are. Logs are the only way to diagnose a problem. Its a waste of time discussing anything workout logs..

I just reverted to Pure Nexus again from my backup as I can't seem to flash any other ROM. I did some logs on one app but I can only do it while the app is running and not when it's crashed. I'm unable to attach the file here but only put the text which is too long for an xda submission. I've gone through help to attach but it seems I have to make a new post and not reply to this thread. Weird!

BTW I've installed CM 13 and minimalistic text works flawlessly on it, no hiccups no crashes, weird!!
When stuff like that happens to me and I feel I've tried everything I can think of, I usually make it easier on myself to run the script in Google's factory image and start new. Flash TWRP with ADB tools, format, reboot TWRP, transfer flashables, and start with that ROM from scratch with GApps. Most variables of messing up would have been avoided and chances of success should be high. Anyone else agree with that?

LOL! I've done that a few times reverting to stock and going from there. I'v had to do that in the past to get out of trouble. But seeing how I've done this countless of times over the past few years and the last phone was also a Nexus [albeit quite a change from Lollypop to Marshmallow], the rules are the same for flashing. One thing I was concerned with initially was that the vendor.img file for Pure Nexus was MMB29P but I'm on MMB29T. I don't know if that's an issue. I'm using 6.0.1 Android.
I may try it again in a few days mind you and re-flash. Will def post something if it's a positive change!!
