[Q] Another Battery Question.. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently got a replacement for one of my Nexus 4s and I'm having horrible battery life.
The battery monitor app built into the stock android does not seem to help much when it comes to monitoring battery life.
There is no way to reset the information, so that one can properly calculate whether applying certain setting/app changes have effected battery life or not.
As of now; It shows the "Screen" as using 38% of the battery, and "Phone Idle" as 14%.

I'm not sure how this is possible, as the phone has hardly been used since I received the replacement 4 days ago.
I've been avoiding using it, while waiting for the screen protectors to arrive.
How is it possible that the Screen percentage is greater than the Phone Idle? I assuming something is preventing the screen from turning off... but whenever I glance at the phone sitting on my desk the screen is always black..
Not sure what could be causing the phone to not put the screen to sleep, as I have only installed 2 apps.. Apex Launcher and Google Voice.
Apex Launcher is not even running (at least not as the default launcher). Also I've only used the phone to make 4 short phone calls, totaling 45 min.
When looking at the graph (inside the battery app) it shows the Screen On more than Awake.
Anyone have any Ideas?? Or should I send this replacement back due to poor battery?
And does anyone know how to reset the data in the Batter Monitor app, so that I can test changes?

Come to the conclusion that Apex might be the 'cause of the battery drain.
I removed Apex (Pro), powered off the phone, and charged to 100% (Atleast thats what the phone said) Powered on, then powered back off and placed back on charger... Phone has been off the Charger, Powered on for 24+hrs now and I'm getting a 78% batter reading..
Screen: 8%
Phone Idle: 19%
Stats as they should be.
So it seems Apex was preventing the screen from going into "sleep" mode..
Which is a shame, because there goes the Homescreen I worked hard on..

Give nova a try.

I tried Nova, even have the Pro version.. It doesn't seem to want to play nice with the Single Screen Wallpaper I made in photoshop..
Maybe I'm just missing a setting somewhere.. Will try again.

Apex has nothing to do with "putting the screen to sleep" if the screen is off it is off.

I have the same issue, though.

Just backup the homescreen that you made, and report the problem to Apex's developers. If they fixed it, you could put it back on =)
btw is it the homescreen shown on your signature?

Take a look I am running SC 2.4 and I had my data on and I went to 79 percent battery in a little over an hour mostly on standby just now I charged my phone to 100 percent and its at 90 while leaving wifi on and a phone call

EB01 has a bug in its sensor code, so turning off AutoRotate will help. It's still not a WHOLE lot better, but it's at least serviceable that way.
Hopefully, the rumors about the update/OTA were true, and we'll see an updated build (EB09 is sticking in my brain for some weird reason, but don't take that as anything real) that fixes the sensor code and anything else that's eating up battery.
Did you do all the flashing when at 100% battery? It's possibly your battery stats are just inaccurate.
Let the phone charge to 100%, then with the phone still plugged in, shut it down so you get JUST the charging screen, and let that go to 100%. Then, boot into CWM and delete battery stats, and then go back to the powered-off-charging-screen and let it go back to 100%, then boot back into your OS. Some people recommend draining the battery most all the way, then charging it back up, but I'm not sure if that's really necessary.
Also, apparently there's a GPS bug in EB01 which causes it not to sleep, which'll drain your battery fast as well (though I don't see the GPS icon on your screen). You might also have some battery hog in the background slaughtereing battey life (the battery use screen might be able to lend some help for that).
Try using an app called juice defender, I found it to help my battery a lot.
SC 2.4 hides the icon.
I was getting a wakelock from Android System earlier today, but that has finally resolved itself and my phone is sleeping now.
I am not a noon so I know about wiping batt stats and did that I have used juice defender before but I just don't see a whole reason that it should drain that quick

No issues with battery life AT ALL with EB01. In fact, the BEST battery life I've EVER gotten, even better than Adrynalyne's UV kernels (no offense bud)
Yesterday, I unplugged around 10, got off work work at 830, was home by about 930, and STILL had some 34% left, 11 hours later. I'VE NEVER been able to go that long on a single charge. And I leave auto-rotate on.
What REALLY helped me, was turning off the GPS when not in use. MAN....what a difference !!!!

Phone turning off at 50% battery life

For the last week or so, I've noticed that my phone now powers off at 50% battery life.
Battery Monitor Widget reports the battery still having ~1000mah at this level, but the phone just dies. I feel like this is incorrect, because sometimes if I run it down slow near 50%, it will do that thing where it will flash RED on the LED when you plug it in for the first time (super low battery indicator).
I'm running AOKP 4.2.2 MR-4, but i've tried a few different roms, dirty and full wipe (factory clean), along with various kernels, but my phone continues to die at 50%.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
See attached screen shot for what I"m talking about. Battery drain will look fine, then all of a sudden, BOOM 0 percent, and I have to charge it.

Yikes, definitely something going on there. Are you running a custom Rom?

Just went completely back to stock and then put the latest AOKP back on. Still seeing some weirdness. It's like it doesn't even use half the capacity of the battery (see discharge/charge graph)

If I had to guess, I would say you battery stats file is out of sync. After flashing different ROM's on a G1, I would have to re-calibrate the battery stats by letting the phone battery slowly die (phone powers off), then fully charge while phone was still off (8-12 hours), turn back on and repeat one more time. The stats file would fix itself.
I'm experiencing the same issue, but mine is not as severe. I've dropped as much as 25% battery, but the phone has never reached auto shut down. I'm worried that this issue will cause the red light of death.

Mysterious idle drain

Hello and thanks for reading ,
I am experiencing a very bad tablet battery life since November 2013.In these past month's i have visited forums, flash factory OS,turned off the radio(and wifi), installed many battery saving apps (didn't work), boot safe mode(drain still there), rubbed snake oil(really dangerous) and the battery still drains faster than a monsoon gutter.
Below is a screen shot of the tablet after I left it to idle for one night .

Any suggestions in solving of the problem are much appreciated and no ,i do not like 4.4.2 cause it breaks my FLAC playback (and still [email protected]% perhour)(currently running 4.3)
Thanks and regards shinra_co
I've got exactly the same problem; battery drains very quick even with airplane mode on. Tablet Idle is the culprit according to the power settings. I wonder what this means and how to solve this issue. can hardly use the tablet, i always need to recharge it.

Same here, and this just started a couple of days ago. Usually, with my usage pattern, I only needed to recharge once a week. Just over night this changed to nightly... Quite annoying.

Registering only to add my "me too" to this problem. The battery is depleted in a few hours (6 to 10) when the tablet is turned off, no sleeping, turned off, even after using the recovery menu option in order to force the power down. It is always lightly hot to the touch when it is automatically discharging, again when turned off.
This is my first Asus device and I am trying to request a refund, I don't want a new device, or a repaired one. I want my money back. I am not sure this will happen because it was bought on December, but this is not tolerable
5 Months in and various updates later (KK 4.4.4 KTU84P right now).
The battery still drain away @ 5.0 per hour minimum.
As per original post, I have still not been able to find the source of the drain.
wakelock detector, better battery stats and battery doctor have been of little help this past months.
Assuming it is not software related, what are the chances it is the hardware ie the battery itself being the culprit.
if so i think i'll wait for the rumored 8" nexus tablet.

[Q] Battery Calculation Broken?

This has happened multiple times on my Galaxy s4. Today was the worst however. My phone was on 51% battery (supposedly) and then, the phone just turns off while I was in an app, without any kind of low battery warning, it was running as normal before this happened, I start the phone up again and bam, 1% battery remaining. Here it is on the battery screen:

My battery was dead by 2pm in the day which is also significantly worse than normal. This is with just 45 minutes screen on time:
and just 7 hours on battery:
And with no apps sucking up battery life.
Has anyone had this issue before and is there any possible way to fix this?
Charge to 100%. Pull battery. Put it back in and charge it again while off to 100%. If that doesnt fix it then get a new battery.

Hi ,
It could be lots of things...battery , phone not going in deep sleep , settings
First thing I would do is use an app like Better Battery Stats and really see what is going on ( kernel wakelocks) , who is keeping the phone up all the time , then i would review all my settings like FB , mail , location ...any syncing related app that may be going crazy and of course battery may be going bad
Look like a bad/faulty battery for me.
Sent from my GT-I9500
Keep in mind that battery percentage is never 100% accurate. All devices with batteries (with a percentage meter) has this.
But yeah, use better battery stats to check wakelocks.
Also a trick to calibrate the fuel gauche chip is to take out the battery for 3-5 minutes. It will be more calibrated than before.

Incorrect Battery Reporting | % Skipping | Dead @ 12%

Battery would fall 2% on the screen, it shows in battery reporting you can see the line drops steeply within 1 minute then stays stable (ignore the part where my device was asleep).
been very inaccurate with reporting % it randomly died at 12% (lowest its been since i got it 3 weeks ago) and when i power back on its at 2%. i charged back up to 40% and let it drop to 12% and the same happened.
i could live with the 3hr SOT if i got a good report of how much % was left so i can conserve usage if need be.
Running stock oxygen 2.1.1
then rooted and installed AK kernel (SOT is a little better) but still % dropping. i even super underclocked and saw the same effect
sent a ticket to OP - hoping its a defect and they can replace it

By what I read, it's a normal behavior when device wakes up from sleep.
It seems that, when device is asleep, even battery stats aren't updated, to avoid unnecessary drain. So, once it wakes up and you use it for couple minutes, android get a chance to record stats and update actual battery percentage.
Again, this is the explanation I read on such a question, and it does makes sense.

i managed to underclock enough to make the other percentages to show up - so it is working just i guess polling is slow.
the 12% dead battery isnt normal though. havnt had it since then but if reset a few times. now switched to a custom rom (keep loosing LTE) but ill figure it out, thanks!
