Who's getting a Surface Pro. I know I am this Saturday. - Windows 8 General

Like the title says, who's getting a surface pro. While the idea of the i5 with fans makes me nervous after having a Samsung series 7 slate upgraded to win 8, simply the Surface Pro is too sexy to pass up. Just wondering who was ponying up the dough this weekend.

Got mine reserved at MS store- 128gb. Also looking at the Dell 29 in widescreen monitor for extra display. Been a long time coming.

When it was originally announced, I was planning to get it on release day but since I got Acer W700, I have no interest in it anymore. Also, the somewhat remaining interest vanished after I read the initial review from Gizmodo, Engadget and others. This thing has HORRIBLE battery life. I get 7 hours plus on W700 easily and it has similar configuration as Surface Pro.

Why would anyone want a portable device with such bad battery life. Doesn't sound very "portable".....

Would love to get a Surface Pro with lower price, even if it meant an i3 or the like.

Well, since this is a role call for people buying on Saturday and not for people who are not...
Mine is reserved for Saturday, after a lot of weighing options, playing with demo units and comparing other products. Also taken into consideration is timing and what lies ahead. This is just one purchase along the way in a life that is filled with them, especially technology and devices.
Everything is a compromise. Admittedly, longer battery life would be nice, but not if it increases the size / weight or reduces other functions.
For me the portability is just fine (as a Tablet) - I never have meetings that go longer than a couple of hours and then I'm back at my desk. I'm never on the couch / in bed reading for more than a couple of hours, and then I can plug it in.
The other functions I need the "portability" for (as a PC) are fine using the Surface plugged in. In fact, plugged in is preferable since I'll want full-power. I need to be working at a physically different location. The key here is working, so plugged in and powered up and crunching hard.
This device is right for me at this time, I'm sure in a year or two I'll be replacing it.

tbh im probably going to wait for the asus transformer book! Would love a Surface pro with a bigger storage space and dock with a battery at least.

On a different note I would really love to see the battery performance of Surface pro after disabling Turbo boost
My i7 laptop gives 3+ hours of battery life using the same method. It can barely last two hours with TB on
I dont find any lags or slowdown except while converting videos. But then you can switch Turbo on with just on click

I am picking one up tomorrow. I primarily look forward to being able to use some of the Silverlight based apps that we have going on around at work as well as that great pen interface with OneNote. Styluses on almost every tablet that doesn't use a WACOM based stylus has left me wanting. My wallet will be feeling the burn but this is what I wanted in the first place.

Can you tell us how do you disable turbo boost? Thanks a lot.

Go to Control Panel > Power Options
Create a new Power Plan. Name it acc to your choice
Then select this new plan > Change Plan settings > change advanced plan settings > Processor power management
Change MAXIMUM Processor state (not minimum) according to your need (explained below)
Changing to 99% disables Turbo boost
Changing to lower percentage like 90 or 80 lowers CPU frequency as well as voltage.
You can choose to keep 100% when plugged in and 90% on battery Then vary it according to your needs.
This method undervolts and underclocks your processor. It uses Intel Enhanced SpeedStep technology to do so

[Q] Windows 8 on Samsung XE700t1a

I have decided to buy a Samsung XE700t1a for my birthday to replace my aging original Acer Aspire One netbook. I know the Samsung comes with Windows 7 and it is possible to install the developers test version of Windows 8 on it. I do however have a few questions and as there is no forum section for the Samsung XE700t1a, ill have to ask here!
1) As Windows 8 hasnt officially been released yet, If I install it, will I be missing drivers/functions? Is it better to use Win7 until Win8 is released?
2) Does anyone know if its possible to replaces the 64GB/128GB SSD harddrive in the Samsung XE700t1a with something bigger in the future?
3) Is it possible to buy HDMI --> VGA adaptors? (the samsung comes with HDMI, but my university uses VGA cables for projectors) and will Win8 support this at the moment or will I have to wait?
4) Have I been a complete n00b and is there a better tablet out there? (was going for the acer Iconia, but the hardware in the Samsung is just better! I want it to last a good few years like my netbook has)
I cant wait to use Win8 as i have been using WP7 on my HD2 since it first came out! Cant wait to have a tablet that looks like my phone!
Realistically, you're better off waiting at this point until proper Win8 tabs are released around Q4 this year. Hardware, specs, battery life etc will all likely be better than any current W7 device.
1) Samsung has their own guide to installing W8CP on their site: http://www.samsung.com/global/windowspreview/ so it should mostly work. But don't forget, W8 is still BETA, therefore there may still be problems with the OS...
2) Yes, but it isn't easy or straightforwards see here
3) Jeez, learn to google! Yes, but it won't work for rights-protected content like movies.
4) Yes the Transformer Prime Infinity
Seriously, if you want a Win8 tab, you're better off waiting...
With Win 8 CP built in drivers, and the couple of new ones on the Samsung site that was linked, everything works great. The only thing that does not work is the Wacom digitiser driver for the pen..no biggie for me at the moment, personally.
It all depends what what you are looking for. Win 7 works great on the slate. Maybe you should consider dual booting until you decide? Certainly do not delete the recovery partition...that that way if you don't like it you can go right back to Win 7 with no drama.

Thanks for you quick reply!
1) I was using W7 and WP7 well before they were released, im happy to put up with bugs and glitches
2) Thanks for the link, Im hoping to buy the 64GB version and put something alot bigger in it
3) Google doesnt work in China, so thanks for checking for me. I dont need to watch movies, just show my powerpoints
4) Thanks for the heads up with the Transformer Prime Infinity, It looks really nice! I think I prefer the idea of a whole PC inside a slate and as the Samsung is upgradable it should last for another 5 years like my netbook did!
jasonkruys: I saw in your signature that you have the Samsung that im looking at. How have you found it? W8 problems? Office 2010 problems? Tested any games?
Many Thanks guys
Whats wrong with the Netbook , I also have one but I got rid of W7 it slowed the system down too much , try installing Kubuntu ,its lightening fast , I also have the Iconia (a500) , 2 completely different platforms (as is WIN 8) , you didnt say what you will be doing with it, my systems all have different uses!
The netbook i use while teaching at university, ive had since 2009 (it was 2nd hand then) I use it for Access and Excel with all the students info and scores. etc. I use powerpoint for my presentations, Media player for showing the students videos etc. Im running win7 ultimate on it with 1.5GB RAM. I love my netbook and the wife and I take it on holidays for net surfing and saving/uploading pictures from her camera, but Its getting a bit old, the hinges are getting little loose, the charging jack when plugged in, doesnt always make a charging contact.
So Im going to retire the little beast and give it to my wife as she will use it less. As I already have 8 computers scattered around the house, I would like something powerful that will last as long/longer than the netbook. I need it to do all of the above and more! I also would like it for surfing and playing at home and as a bit of a show-off-y gaget thats better than an iPad, as most people here in China only buy Apple products and Im very anti-Apple!
I liked the look of the samsung, the reviews were good, the specs will seem to last for a few years and win8 can be used as a "normal" OS for excel editting, but also as a tablet OS for showing off and "gaget-ing!"
Ive been using WP7 on my HTC HD2 for over a year now and have fallen completely in love with the idea for that on a tablet! I have also fallen in love with a tablet that can be upgraded to 8GB RAM, thats half of the RAM I got in my gaming rig here!
My birthday is still 2 months away, so wont be using the wifes credit card just yet!
So I did buy the Samsung XE700T1A. It arrived last week with Windows 7 which I quickly got rid of for Windows 8 CP x64 Version. Here is my thoughts:
1) Installing on USB via the Windows 7 USB-DVD tool was simple and quick. Windows 8 asked for my hotmail account and by the time the metro UI loaded, everything had been sync, like my WP7 phone
2) Windows 8 took me a day to get used to. I had to keep googling things, but a week later, I feel like an ol' pro. Its so easy and simple to use. I actually prefer it to Windows 7, but as none of my other machines have touch capability, I wont be swapping them over just yet!
3) All programs/games I used on Win7 went on to Win8 with no problems and run fine with two exceptions so far: Firefox isnt very touch friendly. When I try to copy a link from the address bar, I hold my finger down for right click, then press copy and instead of the address being copied, the right click menu disappears without saving the address. There are to work-arounds though; Use IE or the pen that comes with the slate! The other program was actually a game. Left For Dead 2 gives me a fatal error after the intro movie during the loading screen, but I have had that on friends Win7 laptops, so I dont think that is Win8 related.
4)Wifi power seems way more powerful. I live in an apartment complex and my old netbook would see 5 or 6 other wifi signals, my slate sees around 20-25 including signals that are across the road!
5) I fully charged the battery, then let is completely drain a few times and now im getting 9-10 hours (while playing civ5 over wifi) before I need to recharge it. Totally blow away by this.
6) The heat from the machine when playing games seems to be no more than my mates laptops. I recommend using the dock when playing games so the heat can rise vertically out of the top though.
7) Ive checked and its fully upgradeble. The shop offered to put 8GB RAM into it for me instead of the standard 4GB. They also said when the warrenty runs out, they will be happy to put a bigger SSD into it too, and as the CPU seems to be a quad-core (Aida 64, CPU-z and even win8 task manager show 4 seperate cores) this should last me for a good few years!
Here are some pics of it in action:
http://www.quiba.co.uk/pc/images/xe7001.jpg
http://www.quiba.co.uk/pc/images/xe7002.jpg
http://www.quiba.co.uk/pc/images/xe7003.jpg

http://www.quiba.co.uk/pc/images/xe7005.jpg
http://www.quiba.co.uk/pc/images/xe7006.jpg
All in all, definatly worth buying and even with this Beta version of Windows 8, things can only get better. At this point I feel win8 is safe enough to use on a day-to-day basis at work and from next week, I will stop taking my netbook. I really feel that using Windows 8 without a touch screen is wasting alot of the advantages and power that win8 has. Maybe thats why alot of people still havent been taken by it yet?
I didnt mean this post to turn into a mini review and I am biased towards it, so sorry for that!
Hey, the Samsung XE700T1A, how long did it last?
is there any difference in battery life from W7 to W8?

Read point 5... playing high graphic games, i get about 6-9 hours. Wifi/internet browsing, im getting around 15-18hours
my friend i think a few things you told here are a Little bit crazy
i have the Samsung slate for 4 month now (since 29.february running Window 8)
the Maximum of battery life are around 5-6 h. when you play games you will have only 2-3 h left.
so i don´t know if you have a BRANDNEW Slate with a new Kind of fuel cell inside but it´s totally impossible to get 9-10h
"5) I fully charged the battery, then let is completely drain a few times and now im getting 9-10 hours (while playing civ5 over wifi) before I need to recharge it. Totally blow away by this.
"
it only have a 5.520 mAh battery.
every new ultrabook with ivy Bridge (20% less battery drain) has only enough battery power for 7-9 hours! (and they have more than 6000 mAh)
and the cpu is not a quard core. it´s a normal Intel i5 (2nd generation i5-2467M) you got 2 cores (4 is the number of Threads)

Thanks for the clearing up over the core thing, I was confused by the four "cores" shown in AIDA 64, CPU-z and task manager, however that makes sense now.
As for the battery, I cant explain it to you. Saturday I was at the In-laws house and as they dont speak English, normally I am left to my own devises. I played Civ 5 for more than 6 hours, then after we went home, I was watching the England cricket on it via wifi, then finally played Plants vs Zombies on it and had to turn it off around 2am as it was warning me that the battery was at 10%.
I have learn from running my computer business here in China that, if you correctly "setup" a new battery they last a lot longer. I did what Samsung suggest in their manuals and charged it to full, then played until it turned its self off. After repeating 3 times, It will last a really long time. Let me fully charge it and Ill up load a screen shot later.
Thanks for the help with the cores though!

Ben Williams' Note 8.0 experience thread

I thought I'd start a thread to talk about my research in to this tablet and the conclusions and decisions i have taken in choosing it, setting it up and the mods i choose to incorporate or leave out. Dont know if it will help other people in choosing to buy one of these or not or if it will help others into expanding the capabilities of their stock unit, but I appreciate the feedback I've been getting on the individual threads I've been looking at.
Why I chose the Note 8.0
Since tablets first started becoming mass market items, I always had a problem with the 10 inch format that is most popular. I myself own a 10 inch tablet (an ASUS Transformer) and while I enjoy using it at home, I find it too bulky to take out with me yet too small to replace my laptop for any serious tasks. Having played with many tablets in stores over the years I soon decided that the 8-9inch form factor was one that was most ideal. 7inches was too small and too close to a mobile phone for my liking. Going up 1 inch adds about 25% more screen real estate and this is significant for me. Saying that, I never found a tablet in that size range that was up to standard in terms of tech spec. They always seems over priced, underpowered or were missing an important feature for my liking. The original note phone came out. I loved the idea and benefit that the spen brought to the table but thought it was too small to be useful for any serious input.
On an average day I will carry a camera, my phone, a note pad, my 10 inch tablet and sometimes a sketchbook as well. While I feel the 8.0 is a little overpriced (not alot overpriced like many reviews seem to lable it) the benefit of the spen allows me to ditch the notepad and sketchbook as well as the 10 inch tablet. This is huge for me as although the other items arent heavy, a whole day carrying my bag can start to take its toll on my shoulder.
Initial thoughts
My tablet arrived in my hands late last night so I havent had much time to spend with it. I love the responsiveness of the spen although I'm not used to the pressure sensitivity of it yet for drawing applications.
I'm a little overwhelmed by the additional apps, functions and settings added to the OS by Samsung at the moment. There seems to be a lot to go through and at least a few things that I have no use of. After I've spent a few days with it, I will talk about what I have enabled and disabled and why but in the mean time I expect to start at least one thread asking a few questions.
Waiting on my microSD card to arrive before I attempt to root it.
A few days in
Rooted the tablet using the method in the link in the mods section bellow. The process was smooth although I no longer am able to access Readers Huib as it displays "Rooting detected"
Installed SetCPU, Trickster, Greenify and FolderMount.
Installed 18GB of games with the assistance of my 64GB microSD and FolderMount.
Set 2 underclocking profiles using setCPU (screen off and battery <= 15%). Dont think ill overclock (at least not at the moment anyway) as everything seems to be running smooth as it is.
Set a few apps to hibernate with Greenify but will build up the list as i notice more apps unncessarily running in the background.
Not really sure if ill get much use out of Trickster yet.
Not had any issues with battery life, but I tend to disable anything I dont need at the time. went the whole weekend with out needing to charge with my current set up and regular use.
Will put up pictures to show my set up when I'm next home and remember (I mostly use forums at work...).
A few weeks in
Had a bit of an extended play now and can report back some more information. I havent used it for drawing as much as I had intended so far as i've been getting carried away with the amount of games that I can store on the device. The overall experience has been extremely positive. I have found that ive not really used the "S series" apps at all. I have S calendar on there but think i preffer google callender. I've been using Awesome note to take most of my notes although I havent figured out how to sync it with evernote yet. Thats the main reason I'm using that app. Im using LayerPaint as my main drawing app. So im only using S note when Im really in a hurry and need to jot something down.
For gaming I'm finding it a pleasure to use. The screen is extremely responsive and i have had little in the way of stuttering issues. The one thing I will say is that a section of the screen gets uncomfortably warm when playing a CPU/GPU intensive game. The CPU shows a temp of 40 degrees but the screen feels warmer than that making me think it may be the GPU thats getting hot. I've not had the chance to explore this further, but it is putting my off wanting to overclock them.
The GPS signal is great and im finding having an 8 inch satnav (with navfree) a really good companion in the car. The battery life is draining about about 20% per hour as a rough estimate through my initial tests with it. volume 60%. screen 60%. GPS on. All other conections off. Power saving mode enabled (not sure this makes much difference for me. Set CPU locks the CPU at my preffered settings, so this is just reducing the refresh rate and lowing the brightness slightly).
A month in
Switched from setCPU to TricksterMod. Although you cant set up specific scenarios with it, there are guvernors that do what I intended with scenarios anyway (luzactiveQ limits the CPU when the screen is off). I overclocked and undervolted both the GPU and CPU and have been pretty stable on my current settings (in the summary section bellow). It seems to be running cooler now as well and I'm no longer getting a hot patch on the left hand side of the screen. Got a new case based on the recomendations on this forum and a few more apps. Art Flow - recommend, although I'm still stuck on LayerPaint. Reviewing a few art reference apps I noticed on FaeMinx's post your homescreen post.
Accessories
Case
I decided to try a cheap case to start me off. Reported issues with magnetized cases on older notes has me spooked (see this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2288809). I liked the idea of the "Hidden Note" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2254176) but I think its a little overkill for me.
I'm starting off with this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mulbess-Lea...TF8&colid=2SV9ALFBCBWRE&coliid=I21F5LS9DX0EES cheap and cheerful, plus the slight lip on the bezel it has will help prevent me accidentally triggering the capacitve buttons on the bottom of the tablet while holding it in landscape. This seems to be working. There are magnets in place to hold it closed. Im not sure how I feel about this...
Now got the Poetic Revolution case. Its a little pricey but not compared to the official one, but it does everything i wanted in a case. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2311243
Additional Spen
Bought the 8pi pen a few weeks ago once I had decided I wanted a note. It works very well with the tablet from my initial tests. I plan on doing a lot of digital art on this device.
Want to get a few days of usage under my belt before I decide if I want to do this or not though http://phandroid.com/2012/12/05/how-to-adjust-s-pen/ (adjust spen sensitivity)
microSD card
Due to the small amount of internal storage i decided a large microSD card is a must and will use an app or combination of apps to either move apps or app data onto it to allow me to install more than would otherwise be avialable. Ordered a Scandisk 64GB class 10 card.
Screen Protector.
Currently undecided whether I will use one or not. The case I have should keep the screen protected in transit and I cant see myself doing any damage to it with the sylus. The Revolution comes with a screen protector built in. If it starts to annoy me, I'll just pop it out.
Car Mount.
As this device has GPS I figure I'll take full advantage and use it as my Satnav (Nav Free) / in car entertainment system. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BXFLYTW/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Mods
Root - A must for me to be able to take advantage of the microSD card. used this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2251033 was a smooth process.
ROM - undecided. waiting to try out touchwiz to see if I like its features and to see what I can disable / uninstall if necesary to boost performance if i find a feature of no benefit
Kernel - Flashed Civs kernal. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2272917 Really pleased with it. allowed me to both undervolt and overclock the CPU and GPU and not had any performance issues.
CPU
100 - 1704
lulzactiveq (a modified interactive but also with the benefit of limiting the cpu when the screen is off). also set ignore_nice_load to 1. so that nice to have processes are now no longer run. only the higher priority ones are.

2 down - 41
2 up - 90

System Apps
Trickster - Was using setCPU but foudn the additional functionality of Trickster to be useful. Specificy with the GPU tweeks.
FolderMount - I dont want to swap the internal and external memory as I plan on still being able to hot swap SD cards if I wish to review some of the photos I've take. I hope that by only moving the app data and not the app itself, I should have no issues doing this.
Auto Airoplane Mode - switches all connections off when the screen is off
Greenify - identify apps that open in the background looking for updates and dissabling that ability in order to preserve battery. I only want some apps to update if I open them.
Other Useful Apps
Titanium Backup
ES File Explorer
DiskUsage - true view of storage space in a easily understood layout. Helps identify wasted space and erase unused files.
Apps for use with Stylus (creative)
Sketchbook Pro - still learning how to use this
LayerPaint - simple lay out, but powerful tool. My favourite at the moment. The fadein/out pen is especially good for line art.
ArtFlow - relatively new app, but good support and growing features.
Lecture Notes - Better than S Note according to sources on here. Not tried it yet
Art reference tools
Handy
Pose Tool
All comments, feedback and suggestions welcome. I've had some great feed back so far on here but would like to have my entire set up in one thread so that people can make advice for me in complete context. Any performace enhancing or battery saving tips appreciated.
Special thanks to @FaeMinx for your general art app help and discussion and @civato for your general support to the comunity. Others have been helpful as well and hopefully I've clicked thanks where appropriate, but these two have been particularly helpful to me.
thank you
Thank you for your comprehensive note.
Please report here any eventual experience with an alternative ROM.
I'm not a Note 8 owner yet, waiting for a 32GB 3G version.

That will do for now. I better get back to work. Been typing this for a while now. Will talk about about what theming I plan on doing and some of the other apps I intend on using. Wont bother talking about games or anything like that though.
All comments, feedback and suggestions welcome. I've had some great feed back so far on here but would like to have my entire set up in one thread so that people can make advice for me in complete context. Any performace enhancing or battery saving tips appreciated.

You may be waiting a while... As I stated in my post, according to both the official store and the online customer service there is no current planned release date for a 32gb model (at least not here in the UK). They say that the demand isnt there (which is a joke in my opinion). Having been told this I decided to go down the "transfer app data to microSD" route.
Honestly, peel is useful to me solely for turning on the television. It's painfully slow to send commands like channel selection to the set.
Multiwindow is very valuable. Comparing things to instructions (ie, have root explorer and a browser open simultaneously to look at files; have a browser and a terminal emulator open simultaneously to read commands in the browser and issue them correctly without swapping between apps.)
I don't know if the multiwindow app in Play supports non-touchwiz roms, but at this point the alternate roms are still touchwiz based, afaik.
Civato has a kernel with underclock, undervolt and overclock support. The recommended app for working with it is trickster, and folks are getting good results.
So far the s-pen handwriting recognition has been disappointing to me. I used some of my 25 dollar Play credit to buy My Script Notes Mobile.
Using it basically requires disabling the use of the GPU for 2d rendering at this time. That's too bad, because doing so does have some impact on overall performance at least in benchmarks. I'm undecided on whether it's also a real issue in use (just learned of the fix last night) and the handwriting recognition is very good.

Really?
I found the handwriting recognition to be amazing... Perhaps I'm just lucky, but my messy inconsistent poorly formed chicken scratch gets recognised perfectly every time... I was actually surprised because I thought I would have to learn to write carefully and slowly to make use of this feature.
I'm thrilled I can whip out the S Pen and scrawl across the screen at speed and the device just understands... Hell, even I can't make out my letters sometimes.
@herts,
Thanks for liking the Hidden Note 8 concept. I'm designing the 3rd version of it with an integrated micro USB wired 3mm thick keyboard. The TPU protected Note 8 and the keyboard would be housed in a 16mm thick notebook.
Yup, it's overkill but it works for some people. More on that thread one i finish making it.
I've been trying to use Directory Bind so that large data would be on the external card and "ghosted" on to the main device memory when the app is used. Initially it works, but then the links disappear on a restart. This was successful with my Note 2, where the direct-wifi file transfers go directly onto my large capacity micro SD card.

Finally got my Note 8.0 last night (a week later than planned) and will add my initial thoughts to the OP.
Basically its that I love the tablet but am a little overwhelmed at the additional features and applications added by Samsung. Need to get comfortable with them and remove those which I dont use. As a fan of efficiency, even if i only get a few extra minutes of battery life or a few extra mb free, ill still get rid of functionality I wont make use of...

Me too, unfortunately the default settings aren't necessatily the best.
HasC in the note 10.1 Tips and Tricks thread has a great video on setting up recognition which is applicable for the note 8:

I've had no issues with it with the initial test sketches I've been doing with it.
I have found I leave the battery saving option in the spen settings on as I am a bit OCD about saving battery. It means I have to pull the supplied spen out a small amount when I want to use the 8pi, but I have no issues in doing this.
I read alot about the pens being slightly off, I even started a thread about it in the Q&A section of this forum, but I'm finding it to be very accurate with this device, even when using it at an angle.
There doesnt seem to be a left handed or right handed option in this tablet which makes me thing that an offset with an older Note may be purposely put there to account for people holding a pen at an angle. What ever orentation I'm using the tablet in, the pointer on the screen seems to be at the tip of the nib, so I am happy.
Added some more comments to the OP about my experience having had the tablet a few days now. added a link to the root tool i used. and a few extra comments on some of the apps i am using.
Some screen shots of my desktop area and settings...
added a but more of my experience having had the tablet a week or 2 now.

Shaky hands? Are you refering to the person who was complaining about the handwriting recognition? I've had no issues with both the supplied stylus or the 8pi. Both are working fantastically and I preffer the handwriting input to the keyboard when inputting text and even better with the drawing applications I've tried so far.
Added further experience. switched from set CPU to Trickster Mod and included my current settings. Got a new case and few new apps.
Not decided whether I will condence my experience progress into one section with my final result or leave it as it is showing how I came to the conclusions I have...

My Review of the Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition)

I purchased the Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) from amazon two weeks ago with overnight shipping. I received it the next day and was impressed by the build quality, except, the right side speaker is slightly loose. I did not notice it was loose until I read another post here saying they had a loose speaker and many others started to find out that theirs was too. Other than that, everyone was perfectly constructed.
When I turned it on for the first time everything was fast and fluid, even with Samsung's TouchWiz and all the other bloaty widgets and apps they come with. I have to say, Samsung can really make a polished piece of hardware, but that is where they should stop, unless they are going to invest a much larger amount of energy in to developing their software platforms. I have the Galaxy S4 as my phone, and now the Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablet, and I always love everything about the Samsung products except for almost 100% of the software they develop... but I will get in to that a little later.
One of the big reasons that I chose this over other Samsung tablets to be my first tablet since I got an Archos Internet Tablet (in 2008 or 9 ), well besides the obviously beastly processor and RAM, was because it had the physical button on the frame and a software digital button. I know a lot of users here and elsewhere hate the physical button, but I don't understand why when you are just wasting space on your screen when the frame of your device would have been actual wasted space without the button. I've used the Galaxy Tab 2 10inch and one of my biggest annoyances was the on-screen buttons because I use the app Splashtop to remotely control my PC, and those damn software navigation buttons always got in the way.
Anyways, on to other things, this thing is fast and powerful. 20-25 apps running in the background and no slow down of any noticeable amount. After a few days though, TouchWiz started lagging tremendously whether there were any apps running or not. Now I've replaced the stock TouchWiz with Nova Launcher Prime, and the Lock Screen with WidgetLocker, and never have I seen any lag on this device since. Plays large, HD quality games like FIFA 14 perfectly.
The S-Pen is actually really cool and I'm a fanatic about productivity and some of the features related to the S-Pen are really great when trying to be productive. It has a feature that lets you scrap book any video, image, text, area of the screen, etc. that I use often to research certain topics and bring them together. Action memo allows me to write down an address that someone is telling me over the phone, then circle it with S-Pen and it will pull up gMaps to direct me there automatically. It was a little strange getting used to writing on a tablet though but now it feels as fluid as if I were writing with a real pen.
I have to say something about the graphical quality of the screen though. It is beautiful, and I have not seen a better quality screen for such a device ever before. The resolution is higher than my Desktop PCs and it definitely shows. It is definitely better than even the iPad Air that I went to check out a couple days ago. Apparently this factor alone is the reason that this Dual-Quad-Core tablet requires that much processor, but that's fine with me.
The Note came with a host of perks such as a $25 Google Play gift card, a $50 Samsung Hub credit, Hulu+, Newsweek, premium "wifi hotspot" membership for 18 months and more that I won't every use. This brings me back to my biggest downfall with Samsung though. They give me $50 to spend on the Samsung Hub (Their version of the Play Store) and when I go there, everything is either junk, already pre-installed on my device, or just something I'm not interested in. I really wanted to use the Samsung Credit to buy some Tech E-Books through their book store and use the Play Store credit for apps/games, but their store only has about 25 tech-related books! So when I decide I won't be buying any books there and try to get some apps and games, half of the decent games worth buying take me directly to the Play Store instead. I feel like I may have this Samsung Credit for a while..
But getting less free stuff than I wanted is not going to detract even 1 star from this bad ass hog. Overall the thing is more powerful than any tablet in its price range, has the highest quality video capabilities, comes with a unique S-Pen that other tablets just don't have, and is a Droid!
:good: 4.5/5 is what my rating would have to be, because they have created a great tablet, and could have got a full 5/5 if they just polished and worked on their software platforms until completion.
Hopin to get KitKat Soon, came stock with 4.3. Thanks for reading.

.I'm using my note for 1 week now...
I've got the 16g wi fi version.
I ve got the 16 bec ause that was the only one available at the store and since there wo n't be any model available in my country soon and I was travelling in the US I, ve decided to buy this on with a 32g sd card.
So far everything is fine, stock configuration and beginning to do some customizations.
My previous tablet was the asus tf300 wich was stolen.
My first concearn was about the 16g of storage....Yes it's small but since I'm moving all available apps and files to sd card everything is working ok. Can't notice any difference between sd or internal apps running.
The s pen is awesome. the kind of thing that you just know you need it only after you get it. Much easier and accurate navigation through the tablet with it.
The multi screen function is also awesome. no need to exit one browser to see other one again....
The only thing that bothers me , and that's not a only Samsung fault, is the amout of pre installed apps.
I was waiting for the tf701 and the new nexus 10.....wich won't be available here either. ... Since both weren't available I've decided for the Samsung.
I'm a regular user, the main use is for reading aircraft manuals and articles and using some life easing and time saving apps...and so far I'm happy with my choice.the tablet is doing its job.
I read lots of reviews and comparisons and my conclusion is that when premium tablet is the concearn. ..regular every day users like me , any pick is a good pick.....Is pretty much like buying a premium sports car.... some will prefer Ferrari some lamborgini and others Porches but either one will be a great choice.

That's a point where I'm not very satisfied. I think that me battery drains faster than it shoud. I use the device basically with wi fi on all the time right now my battery is low but latter after charging I'll reply with time time availability shown with 100%.
I think the battery is one of the few areas of honest disappointment. I don't like Android devices that make you do a lot of discovery to find battery drain culprits, or hold a charge quite as well as you'd expect. That's one area where I blame the TouchWiz skin on this tablet.
You were right to highlight the screen, it's absolutely phenomenal. It's far better than my Nexus 10 which was something. It outclasses my iPad as well, it's not just clear it has beautiful color reproduction. It's a bit heavier than I expected after reviews, and my home button is sticky. Besides that it's well made.
It's funny though, I can't say without a doubt I'd recommend it to people if it weren't for the S-Pen usage. The SPen on this is incredible, it works better than you'd think if you have no experience with it. No lag, good software tied in with it, it's the real deal as far as having a virtual notebook. That's why I bought it and why I love it so far. Take that away and the TouchWiz skin seems so unnecessary in so many ways. As someone who uses a Note 3 everyday, this clearly isn't as fast or slick, but it has the real estate. Interesting device.

Battery life about 10 hours medium usage with full-brightness. I drain the battery pretty quick though playing games on it and watching hulu..
I feel like my friends older Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 gets better battery life, but then again he always has the brightness to a minimum. I always max the brightness because its just too good looking.
By the way another thing I love about this tablet vs the Galaxy Tabs is that it uses the standard android MicroUSB charger instead of a fat proprietary looking one that doesn't charge any of my other devices.

Picked up an Asus t100

Sup guys, saw a few people wondering about this particular tablet so I figure I'd offer some brief insight.
I picked the 64 gb model up from the Microsoft store website for around $380 shipped (I got the ten percent off for being a student)
First off this is my first windows 8 tablet and as a tech head im not opposed or particularly biased to any platform, I just like what I like.
Pros:
-Full windows 8, not limited like RT
-Windows 8 runs smooth on it. I was afraid initially after hearing Horror stories about lag and freeze ups, but so far it's ran perfectly smooth.
-The included keyboard. While kind of cramped the key action feels good to type on.
- True multitasking. I love the split screen feature similar to that of the note 3 and find myself using it a lot.
-The price. For a very fair price you get a full windows 8 tablet along with the keyboard. The surface 2 which isn't full windows would run you almost double the price after purchasing the separate keyboard.
Cons: (more like nitpicks you should expect at this price point)
- Build quality. While the software is great the budget price shows in the hardware. All plastic build, bit creeky, and it's a finger print magnet.
-Speakers. They seem funky. The placement isn't ideal and sometimes if you're watching a movie it might be better to use head phone's. Not totally unusable at all, but not that good either.
-Brightness. It will do, but wish it got brighter. The resolution is fine in my opinion it's the brightness that could use a boost.
Other people have been weary of the screen resolution, well don't be. It's not bad at all and it's one of those things where you won't really notice unless you're comparing it side by side or are a pixel peeper ocd about it.
All in all I'm super happy with my purchase. Haven't had any crashes or lag, windows 8 has been great in my small sample time. I like the usability of the tablet and the versatility it offers, it's good for both work and play.
I would recommend going with the 64gb. After booting it up I believe you actually have around 46-48gb free.
Any questions, just ask.

Did You Have to Update the BIOS
I am on the cusp of getting one but I have read of horror stories with the charging/sleep behavior with the as-shipped BIOS (I believe it's 214) - and there is a new BIOS out on ASUS's website (220). Did you have any power issues or have to update?
I picked myself up the 32gb model just before Christmas. First thing I did was flash the 220 BIOS. I've had zero problems what so ever. Those so called "horror stories" you mention are just morons with zero knowledge of how Windows handles sleep/hibernation behaviour.
It's a great little machine, well worth the money.

the initial BIOS that came with the machine was indeed crap
new BIOS fixed a lot of the problems
I ordered a matte anti-glare screen protector... helps a lot with the low-brightness of the device (low brightness + glare = hard to read anything)
I solved the low brightness with the simple expedient of turning off automatic brightness and setting it manually. Looks much better.
I had it for a few days and took it back for only little nit picky reasons. I was very happy with it, but it didn't get dim enough for me. at the lowest setting it was burning my eyeballs untio my eyes adjusted - I do a lot of night surfing and reading. other than that and the crappy sd card placement it was one helluva tablet. my only problem is tha I was always using it as a laptop and for the price I could get a better speced (in some areas) laptop.
I still kinda wanna get it again and just might if it hits $350 for the 64. I had the 64 and got it from wal-mart.

I doubt the charging circuit is ever capable of drawing 3A.
In electronics you dont force current around a circuit, the components draw current instead. If the circuit only draws 1.5A and is on a 5A supply, only 1.5A will be drawn from the supply.
I do have a [email protected] supply somewhere.... utterly useless for tablets unless I want to charge 3 or 4 of them from on cable Nothing wrong with such high current supplies, the HP case was genuinely poor design chargers (underspecced regulator was my understanding)
they've reported it on either the tabletpcreview forum or transformner forum. I didn't see any posts that verified that it pull 15watts or not. if the tablet doesn't request more than two amps then it's pretty useless to makes a 3 amp... unless it's a sign that future tablets will be and the 3 amp will be their new default OEM charger.
I swear I check the stock everyday hat my local Walmart and keep hearing the t100 calling me. I may just give in and repurchase.
one issue I did have with mine was that after my first round of windows updates my SD card reader acted up. after the next set of updates it worked fine. also, the charms bar only popped up if I swiped the top half in landscape mode.
The model with the 3A charger is mainly the EU one with the 500gb HD in the keyboard dock. Clearly, the extra amp is to power the HD whilst still charging the tablet. It's likely that 2A wasn't enough to charge whilst docked, otherwise.

Farewell Note Pro 12.2

After soul searching for a few weeks I decided to sell my 12.2. I really wanted a one device replacement for my tablets and laptop. As much as I tried, this just did not fit the bill. I was also surprised at the lack of any development on this tablet.
It is a solid device but needs a dock in my opinion and can't quite service all my needs in one device.
Bye bye 12.2. It was fun for a while.
Yeah I don't know if you're like me but as much as I wish for it there will never be a true "laptop replacement" other than a laptop itself lol. I always cringe a little when new users come to the note pro forums here or on Android Central and ask if these devices would serve them well as a laptop replacement. Truth is they do for some use cases but not all.
Sorry things didn't work out for you. It's too bad about lack of development too. Taking matters into ones own hands by using things like xposed gives some relief but it's not the same as true custom roms.

"Well" is subjective, particularly when it comes to generalized requirements. Take an existing powerpoint done on a computer that has complicated transitions and embedded objects and all bets are off as to whether or not the tablet will handle it "well" if at all.
I'm an engineer so I always err on the side of conservatism so I can't go on record telling you it will fit your needs perfectly. That said I think in general yeah you should be okay provided your specific requirements with regards to office file compatibility are not too high.

Im looking to use this as a light laptop replacement for school. I have a large 17.3 inch laptop that I lug around and i commute so its starting to be a pain. I want to use this for notes, writing in class , going over power points and light work. I will leave the serious stuff for my laptop at home. I will probably buy a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Do you think the device can cover these areas well ?

It varies from person to person. I've used it for that in my last year and it served it's purpose well. (With a Logitech K810). As for if it will work for you, I can not say.

I really like the idea of the Surface. It's just such a shame they had to use a 1990's level GPU. You get an i7, 16GB RAM.... and an Intel HD 4000. If there was ever the definition of a bottleneck, it's an Intel HD. That piece of junk is not worth 2000 quid. Not worth 800, either. 150, maybe.
I require a dedicated GPU for my day to day usage of a laptop (Design/Gaming).
If the Surface 4 gets an Nvidia, now that will be worth considering.
I do no gaming and no graphic design work so it seems to be just want I needed. So far, so good.
I don't think the Surface 3 Pro is advertised anywhere as a gamer machine.

I know. And if you're happy with it, don't let me stop you. (no really, I mean it. This is just my opinion, you don't need my opinion to enjoy your device )
I just don't think it's worth the price it sells for. Not in terms of hardware.
My laptop has an IntelHD 4000 and an Nvidia 740M. (That requires some managing as a gamer.) Inside is the same range of an i7 and 16GB RAM. When I select the IntelHD as the device to play a 2k film, it freezes every few minutes, botches up the render of several shot switches and if it's 4K, simply doesn't even get past the very first frame. The sound plays, but the video simply can't be rendered.
That's how weak an Intel HD is. Now tell me, is that worth 800 quid? Let alone 2000?
I like the idea, I really, really do. And if they add an Nvidia, I will absolutely buy the top-tier one.
But I can't understand why people would pay so much for such outdated and lousy tech.(But then, I feel the same about Apple users.) Or why companies are so utterly stupid in adding them. It's bloody difficult to even find a decent laptop below 8000 quid that doesn't have one of those useless Intel HD's. Intel HD should've been banned from the market year ago since the Family 4.
I recently had the Surface Pro 3 and it really was a solid device. I actually returned my Wi-Fi GNP12.2 to get it. But for what it cost, I really expected more. That device needs broadwell. Thermal issues and such really prevent you from taking advantage of it's higher potential performance capability. It ended up being a basic media and light productivity device, for which I found the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 to be fully capable of doing, for considerably less money.
I decided to go back to the GNP12.2, except this time I went with the SM-P907A as my "small notebook replacement" device. Add in the solid Samsung keyboard case, S Mouse, and I'm ready to roll. The Snapdragon still does it's thing better than the Exynos, I've got LTE everywhere (love that feature), and with the right apps, it really has been able to do everything I need out a portable computing device. I mean, it's light, excellent battery life, crisp screen... the list goes on.
Keeping in mind, I do have a more powerful 15" Ultrabook and high-end fixed workstation for more demanding tasks. But for the day-to-day mobile stuff, it's been working great for me. Well, at least until something more interesting comes along. With that said, I do agree it's not for everybody. Nothing ever is. But probably at least worth giving a shot for many. Either way, good luck! :good:

Hey man I am in the same boat. I just went through Dell Venue 8 pro-->11 pro--> Note 10.1 2014--> note pro 12.2. All in the matter of like a month.....
I have this to say about them all.
Dell venue series I bought out of a desire to try and stay cheap but still have an active digitizer. I am trying to digitize all of my notes for my masters program so that when I write my thesis it will all be accessible in one place. Venue 8 was too small, 10 was underpowered and the active digitizer on both was crap, I mean really bad. The note 10.1 was great but I wanted some more real estate so I went with the 12.2 for a week or so. Since it is the thread I am writing in I will make a few observations
1. Great tab overall, well powered but overwhelmed by Samsung TW UI, easy to take care of with root/greenify and what not.
2. For importing the pdfs and ppts from lecture it just took forever, I played with some different note taking apps and I always ended up with the S-pen app which is awesome, but it would not handle my 1000+ page books at all. I don't know how long I waited for snote to import it and then it crashed. What a shame because it was a champ otherwise.
3. One thing both the notes had for me was the multiwindow function, watch a lecture and take notes at the same time, but I noticed when I was streaming lectures that were in HD I would get some lags from the Snore and Spen. Again shame because I know the tab has the power to run it but I am guessing that its the TW issues again.
4. Why I ended up going elsewhere.(surface 3 i3)
- I want to get rid of carrying around my old 09 MBP and become a little more streamlined. I am relinquishing my MBP to be a home desktop/server since I dropped an extra 4gigs of ram and a 1TB HD in it through the years. This tab just didn't do it for me. It was soooooooo soooooo close but it just didn't quite get there from a productivity standpoint FOR ME.
5. I am a flashaholic with my phone sooooooo having something to run Odin/LGflashtool on when I am on the go would be nice so that I don't have to worry about ending up in bootloops and not have a phone the rest of the day.
Note to Samsung if you are reading this.
First, bravo on a great tab, seriously it is an awesome machine but
Second, get out of the way of the android experience a little(read a lot) more and let the hardware shine. I would love to see the android L update on this tab with a minimized TW UI so that you can really see the beast that is in the tablet.
I have gone from cheap to some of the best hybrid tablets you can go and I have this to say. The Note pro may be for you because its awesome but know what you need and what you don't. If you are trying to replace a laptop then the Note pro may not be for you unless you are talking about partial replacement to just carry around during the day and then use the big laptop back home, it may work then. BUT, if you want a true laptop replacement, like leave your old one to collect dust it may not be right for you.
Just trying to prevent so many open box items at my local best buy........

I too use this tablet for school and for the price ($416 on ebay) it's a miracle device. I tried the surface pro 3 and the handwriting was not as good which was a deal breaker for at its price ($999 for the i5). I chose to just acept that ill have to carry around my toshiba a little while longer. snote is a underpowered app with frustrating lag when navigating through different ui but still the best there is. As a side note, I'm not sure why to would want to import pdfs into it when you can multi window them in a reader.

Even as a power user, I have had no problem using the NP12.2 as a primary enterprise device. I travel a lot for business, do presentations and lecturing and so forth. My demands are quite high and I have loved the 12.2. On the occasion that I have needed something more powerful, the use of one of the remote apps (I like PhoneMyPC and have used it for years) works just fine as long as I keep my laptop at home, powered on, and connected to the internet. Then, when I need a file or something from the PC, well... that is what Dropbox is for. Couple the NP12.2 with a bluetooth keyboard case (and mouse if you need it) and it has been the best tablet that I have ever used, and I owned the first 10.1 android tablet two days after it came out.
