[Q] Is it possible not wiping SD to change ROM? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys.
I'm using Modaco's custom ROM and I want to change to the latest M version of Cyanogen. But the thing is I'm not sure if it's a good idea to dirty flash a very different ROM (even though they are both 4.2.1), and I would like to avoid having to backup my entire SD card to my computer to make a clean flash... Is there anyway I can avoid such a thing?
Best regards,
Bernardo Pinho

Nope.

The "factory reset" menu choice in the TWRP recovery preserves /data/media (your "fake" SD card), but wipes everything else in /data and all of /cache too.
I suppose that CWM has a similar menu item, but as I don't use that (yet), I can't vouch for that.
BTW the "format data" menu button on the same TWRP (wipe sub-menu) screen does exactly what you are trying to avoid - destroys all of /data. Be careful against accidental screen touches.
cheers
PS I strongly recommend backups anyway until you are completely familiar with the way things go with the recovery that you are using.

THANK YOUUUUUUUU just what I needed. Was using clockwork but flashed TWRP just to make sure I wouldn't flash /media, and it worked perfectly, thank you so much for sparing me all the trouble I would have to go through otherwise

I learned the hard way with TWRP. My prior Android device had a real external SD card.
You should make a complete 100 percent backup of what's in there and then experiment with whatever recovery you normally use so that you know what to expect from it's various menu items.
Note that when you choose any particular button in the TWRP wipe menu, (say "Factory Reset"), when it finishes, there is a "Done" button or something like that in the lower middle part of the screen. When you touch it, the menu returns immediately to the prior level... and your finger is hovering right over the "Wipe Data" button.
I'd wager a dollar that's going to bite somebody with a sensitive touch panel.

can not create nandroid backup

so i have completed rooting my sprint hero, and verified by using several apps that require rooting... i have tried to no avail to do a nandroid backup and have not been able to, yet.
so when i attempt a nandroid backup is my phone supposed to sit on the htc load screen overnight? if not that is one symptom. i have done alot of reading but i fear i may have overdine the reading and confused processes or something, im not quite sure but i could use some help. thanks in advance
btw, i have NEVER seen this screen, only the fastboot menu and the hard reset menu
btw i have never seen the screen prompt attempting a restore reboot either, it ALWAYS freezes at the HTC screen no matter if i use home/power, or vol down/power and then select the restore option from there....
14. The screen that follows is this.
Code:
-reboot system now
-USB-MS toggle
-Backup/restore
-Flash zip from Sd card
-wipe
-partition sdcard
-other
15. At this point you want to select "Backup/Restore"
any help is much appreciated
select backup/restore
then do nandroid backup.. Not the nandroid + ext or barts.. Just the nano
When you do that let it sit till it completely finishes.. Youll know
After that you should boot up without a problem. You didnt do anything to your phone
If you're referring to never seeing this screen. and it freezes on a black screen with only "htc"on it even when trying to load RA, I'm guessing that your installation of the custom recovery got messed up. In which case you need to re-install it. > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4898505&postcount=1

[Q] Force clockwork restore?

I while preparing to flash a new ROM I scrolled one to many selections in the format menu and selected "format sdcard" by mistake. (anyone else think the little warning notice up top should inform you which area you are about to format and not just a generic "formatting can not be undone" warning... I have thought this before but never voiced it to anyone and it seems my fears were well founded)
So now I have lost my app data backups and ROM backups, along with various other data.
I have used a couple programs to recover the data on the sdcard and have managed to get the clockwork backups back. Problem is, I want to do a partial restore of just /data (from the advanced restore menu) but the md5 sums are not matching. As I as just restoring /data and from the same ROM currently on the phone, I am not overly concerned by that. I just need to get as much of the original app data back as I can so I can do a new backup of the app data and then do a proper wipe and flash of a new ROM.
I know there was a way to force a restore with ADB when I had my old N1, is there a way to do so with the current recovery on this phone?
Thanks in advance... I been up way past my normal time so I am dead and can't focus well. So its off to bed and hopefully will come back to some good news after work.
Nobody.. anything?

[Q] Warning TWRP factory reset will wipe your internal memory(Music, backups, photos)

I loved TWRP recovery, but then I did a factory reset. TWRP completely wiped my phone beyond what was needed and no I did not do a custom reset but the default one. I have a nexus 4 and the reset wiped all my data. Music, photos(even the nandroid backup that TWRP created!) CMW does NOT clean the internal data such as music and other folder, it leaves them. Why TWRP wipes it all is beyond me. Thank you for this great custom recovery however I lost a lot of data that cannot be ever replaced and lost hours and hours of time restoring everything since Titanium backups were deleted. This should not have happened. Have others experienced the same?
You probably selected internal memory by accident, I dont recognize the problem.

First of all, I checked out their site and here is why I shouldn't have to do that. When reading this http://teamw.in/whattowipe Notice the quoted "These options are there for convenience. For instance, if you're getting ready to sell your device, then it's a good idea to wipe everything on the device so that the new owner doesn't get your private data."
I'm just saying that the standard wipe that TWRP provides should not delete my internal mem.

I do it all the time. The "standard wipe" has never wiped my internal memory. In fact, they've made it more difficult to accidentally wipe it than it used to be.
How come mine deletes

I believe so. Should be a standard confirmation message.
When I factory reset via TWRP my internal storage does not get wiped.

Have done a factory reset three times last week through TWRP 2.6.0.0 and it always left /data/media alone. Maybe you accidentally toggled a full wipe?

Maybe, but i'm sure i just used the default wipe. Either way I am using CWM touch and dont have to worry about that. Thank you all for your support)
Just wiped my phone last night to install Paranoids latest. Using latest TWRP I selected wipe, it stated that it was a factory reset and showed everything that would be touched, afterwards I booted up and restored 5 different backups all from my internal storage so it didn't wipe it lol
You sure you selected the right thing?

Well, I guess I did something wrong and it cost me big time. Maybe I will give TWRP another try, some other time, will definitely back everything to my pc or DB before I do
Thanks to all who replied

I have the same problem with TWRP
I did a factory reset and it deleted my backup created with TWRP as well as the ROM I was about to flash along with everything else in the "virtual SD card". Maybe I am missing something since I am new to phones without an SD card.
No, I think you either did a Format DATA (which explain what it is and force you to type "yes" to continue) or you went in advance wipe and selected the Internal Storage to wipe. Factory Reset does not delete the internal memory.

You have no idea how much I love you and how stupid I feel right now. For some reason I wasn't seeing the swipe to factory reset and you made me realize that. Thanks for helping a noob.
I accidentally formatted my internal storage a before using Advance Wipe, I think they made it too easy to accidentally check the Internal Storage box. It usually goes something like this: F#$%@#$^@$#%^#$%@#%@#%!!!!!!
I also have wiped my entire phone, how on earth do i get it back online to install OS again?
CWM is better i think.

Yeah Man Happened to me too just now. Cryiing. Literally crying all my media gone awayyy.
I liked twrp more but now
I think cwm is better than twrp because of this format it did to me.
Cwm was good but it has not been updated for quite some time" while twrp continues to improve imho.
Well even i prefer cwm or philz from cm11 but people still love twrp.

How do I include an "internal SD" wipe into standard "Factory Reset" from Settings

How do I include an "internal SD" wipe into standard "Factory Reset" from Settings
Hi guys,
I couldnt find any information regarding the following issues.
Its nothing new, that if you are using TWRP and perform a factory reset from the settings menu, it wont touch your internal SD. The problem is, I´d like it to also wipe the internal SD!
So is there a way keeping TWRP and still getting this feature? Or this the only way to use the factory recovery?
Thanks n greets
I was going to explain to you step by step how to wipe your internal storage, but after going into TWRP myself I realize its so simple that you just need to figure it out yourself.

Again, its not about wiping it within TWRP itself, its about wiping it through the "factory reset" option in the settings.
If I remotely wipe the phone through the android device manager, it wont wipe the phone fully while having TWRP, using the factory recovery it will.
For me this is a security issue regarding private data in case of a stolen / lost phone
Look into cerberus, it allows wiping of both internal and sd card.
Plus its dirt cheap and a good app.

Need help with system not mounting

Ok need some help is there any way to fix this problem. .....
The system doesn't mount and comes up with a whole bunch of errors or is it past help.
Can you tell us (or show us) what the errors are?
A prinscreen/photo of the errors would be great

This is problem
It looks like you've installed TWRP and not wiped data. /data is encrypted and therefore TWRP cannot read it.
If you go into TWRP and choose wipe, then select format data, then type yes. This will wipe data and remove the encryption. Although this will wipe all data, the same way a factory reset would.
This will now allow you to access data in TWRP.

When pressing Wipe, make sure you're not swiping to factory reset. Press 'Format Data' and then on the next screen type yes.
