Yes, there are ways to do so. However, they are complicated to do.
Unless you absolutely have to, I suggest you stick with using clockworkmod.
You can tpt your phone with pre installed ROM.
Check Amphoras site with different TPTs

Hi guys,
I recently broke my phone and now I am using my old Motorola Defy, and I don't like the original ROM, and thought that maybe I can ask here for a full guide on how to root my phone, install the right\best recovery and installing a new KitKat ROM.
I'm currently using a stock 2.3.6 ROM.
Thanks in advance for everyone who helps me

Via TWRP recovery! I need a flashable zip as I was not successful in extracting it from the stock ROM I have.

I think it would be simpler and faster to just flash the stock ROM, since nobody seems to be able to offer you any further advice on this.

Its been a while since I installed it myself but from what I remember, I believe it only worked if it was flashed over the stock g2 kitkat (or jellybean) rom. I've never really used bootstacks myself so I don't really know which one to go for, however I'd assume you could start by looking for ones made for kitkat.
Personally, I would do a clean install of the stock kk rom, reroot, flash custom recovery, and then install cm11.
