Nexus 4 is great but ... - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey folks,
I sold my galaxy note to buy N4 with lots of doubts and fear but now I have it and I am sure it is wonderful and better than my gnote.
The battery is extremely good. I will put some screen shots here later but I am sure I have 6 hr screen on under heavy use and full wifi on.
I really do not want mess things up and change rom but I am not very happy with the loudness of the audio out.
Now I wanna ask from those of you who has changed rom that do you think cm 10.1 or other kernels have better sound loudness or not? Should I change rom only for this sake?
Kudos
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

There are mods like XLOUDER that increase the volume. I haven't tried those since it's loud enough for me, though.

Audio out as in the headphone port or just in general over the speakers?
Because if its headphones youd be surprised what a good set will do. I had the "problem" with my HTC device through cheapo headphones but then I got a good deal on some triple-driver Ultimate Ears. HUGE difference. Now the phone cant be above half without hurting and the audio is considerably better since you arent maxing out the output of the phones.

I mean in the headphone or loud speaker,
What sets do you suggest from ebay or amazon?
And where can I find those mods for more loudness?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

I dont think there has to be anything specific but a set with multiple drivers or a 3mm or better driver would do it. I got some Ultimate Ears 600 series and those alone were probably 5-6x louder than some $20 Sony earbuds I had before. Retail they were $150 but I got in on one of those "dented box" sales for $50.

totally rubbish sound on video recordings
didnt like the black background on main email section, you cant change it!
loved the screen size but colours look unnatural even when on lowest setting
no way in hell i was staying in a 24 month contract with a phone that isnt what i expected, very disappointing, the video audio was the main decider for me
i think i will wait until Samsung fix these problems, which knowing them will be about 12 months
Supercurio says he can fix the audio in video recording.
I have none of the other problems you list.

Could the Wifi dropping be your router? Ive been impressed with Wifi thus far.
Impressed with the video recording too. If I wanted better I'd buy a HD Video camera.

I understand why people are not happy with the video recorder sound. There is no point in pretending its not a problem by comparing it to a 4k HDR camera. If they can do 1080p 30fps you'd think the sound would be at least on par with the visuals.
Fact is the SGS2 had much better sound and so too does the iPhone. Samsung have achieved better in the past and its disappointing to take a step back in the area.
Again with the whinges about the sound. Its a software problem. It will be fixed eventually.

People who possess nexus 4

For people who already have Nexus 4.....
1) How is the battery life. After reading a lot of reviews, it says that battery life is pretty bad.
2) How is the call quality?
3) Would you recommend upgrading from Galaxy Nexus (which one is better).
Thanks a lot in advance. I will be hitting 'thanks' button
Just Google it.
There's a 3 minute video when you register stating that you can just use the search function or just Google it.
Upgrading from GNexus is well worth it.
Call quality is decent.
It will get you through the day with mild use (Slight Gaming, Video, Browsing, Calling)
It IS a 2100 MaH, which the largest any Phone actually has, and you would be able to increase the battery life using a good Kernel and/or ROM.

Reviews dont give out all the information.
For example, someone got the device and posted on XDA on the 13th, said that the phones makes noises when you shake the phone.
He later found out that it is accelerometer that is making that sound. When went back to the store and checked all devices,
all of the phones made that same noice.

The phone is utterly fantastic.
Battery life is moderate.
Call quality is good
The experience of using the device, for any task, is a complete joy.
Ultimately it comes down to the price, and I say this reluctantly, because, since using it, the price seems almost like a secondary feature. Almost like "oh and this phone has NFC!"
But frankly for £279 it is so utterly beyond anything else out on the market today that I'd recommend it to any single person looking to get a smartphone.
When I got my galay s2 a fair while ago, I felt like it was exceptional value, for everything it offered and how much it was.
If the galaxy s2 was good value, then this phone is the epitome of value.
In every single way it screams valuable, that is in every way except the price. Buy It.

HTC one vs note 2 speakers

Does anybody have any first hand experience with both these phones to make a comparison?

Hi, I sold my Note 2 for a HTC One. I always thought the speaker on the Note was very impressive.

No I needed a change from Samsung. I do miss the large screen and all the Smart features. I've managed to find some apps that sort that issue out though
So far I am happy with the battery life. It did a full day yesterday. I`m still unlocking the screen every 5 minutes though just to look at it
If the battery life becomes an issue I`ll install Juice Defender.
Yesterday I had 81% left by 1pm and I had it off charge at 7am.
Hope that helps.
I came from the Samsung Note II as well. With the Note II rooted and on custom rom. I say the performance of sound on the Note II was louder and probably slightly better than the HTC One. I was on Perseus kernel with Noozide on the Note II. I felt the bass pumping on the Note II, whereas the One did not. Also I feel the HTC one just isn't loud with the two speakers.
I haven't found any tweaks to get the volume louder on the HTC one yet... Hopefully someone can pull off a hack to get higher db.

did that kernel add to the speakers? When I had my note 2 the speakers were horribly tinny and quiet. Not as bad as the nexus 4's though.

I respectfully disagree. The Note 2 rear speaker is damn loud, and I think from a decibel standpoint its about the same, quality though, the HTC wins out. My wife has a Note 2, I have a One and an S4 and I can honestly as after all the rave reviews of the HTC's "loud speaker" I was disappointed. It sounds wonderful yes, but its not "turn it down halfway because its so loud" like some of the professional reviewers say.
Im sure mine was loud when i first got it. Seems to me the new firmware reduced the volume.

I had a Note 2 on Sprint and then On AT&T. I left my Note 2 to get the One and I'm thoroughly impressed. Honestly, even though my Note's were rooted with custom kernels, they just weren't as sharp in the sound department. They were loud, but had a very tinny sound at high volume. The front facing speakers on the One really do the commercials justice. They are far clearer, and sound better than ANY other phone I've had.

Coming from a Note 2 and working with co-workers with a Note 2 I find this very hard to believe. I also tried this kernel and almost didn't hear any difference...before the note speaker sounded very tinny and afterwards it sounded a little less tinny. According to Samsung the speaker was not broken and within production tolerance. The lousy (quality and volume) speaker was one of the reasons to switch to a One and I didn't regret it one minute..
had the note 2 previously. The note 2 does sound loud when its turned over on its face but mine was rarely on its face, still sounded pretty loud though.
The One sounds very loud and because the speakers are on the face its loud all the time, The quality is also far far far better than the note. It wont replace a portable speaker though, understandably there isn't much bass(more than the note though).

Nexus 7 speaker quality

So I love my new 2013 N7 over my 2012 a lot. But one thing that has been getting me is the weird speaker quality. On low volume it sounds full and almost has some bass in it like my 2012 N7. But once you turn it up pass the half way mark, the sound gets really thin and sort of poor. Anyone else notice this or am I going crazy? Any fix?
It is a 7 inch tablet with 2 tiny speakers. You are not going to get good base at high volume.

I agree..
Man, my cheap ass Touchpad has the best sound. Base, separation and everything..
While the 13 nex7 is a giant improvement over last year in terms of sound it is pathetic next to my old touchpad.

I upgraded from Nexus 7 (2012) to Nexus 7 (2013) and was a bit disappointed with the speakers. 2013 comes with two speakers (stereo) so it beat the one speaker in 2012 but not much better.

what your idea of good bass is. It may be better than the Nex but it did not sound that great to me.
That thing was a piece of crap actually.
If you actually want to increase the volume to get higher and more clear go to market and type in viper4android and install then search the thread about viper4android on how to use and it really works....if this help please click thank button.:good::laugh:
The point is for me. It sounds good and has lil bass and fullness to it at the half volume mark. But turn it up pass then and it's terrible and thin. Almost like the software cut the EQ off at that point. As for headphones the volume is sort of low.
The Amazon kindle had good bass and sound on it's stereo speakers though.
It's a software algorithm built into the amplifier and speaker controller. Read about it in an article on the Nexus 7 build, possibly Anandtech. Basically, it prevents overloading of the speakers. As the volume goes beyond a certain level it lowers the bass percentage. Hence the tiny sound at high volume. Not the best solution.

Sad, but thank you so much for the explanation. I guess Google will never get it right with speakers on the N7 line, at least not for now.
Hi
well completely agreed with the above posts mentioned...sound quality is just fine and yes the algorithm designed for music volume and bass configuration helps you to increase the efficiency and durability of the speakers..so its a nice feature and provide the music volume that is sufficient as far considered...
So no issues with the speaker volume
Thanks !!!

u have 4viper mod on the nexus 7 FHD 2013? i have it on my nexus4 phone and it only works with google play music and musiXmatch apps
to me it doesn't really make the sound louder, it makes it better quality tho but im not an audiophile, i just care more bout 'loudness' as i don't use headphones much
When you install it, it asks to update the driver and it fails for me. I only tried the first 2 choices. What is the correct choice? This is for viper4. Downloaded the 4.3 version. I am running Pac Rom with elemental 1.5.

I think the 2013 is a huge improvement over the last gen. I mean we have stereo now and it sounds clean and sharp.
If you need rely good audio with this device then I would suggest headphones. They much better for gaming anyhow.

Lucky!
I thought it was a common problem on all the 2013 N7's, my unit is pretty good but has a static/hissing sound when at low-mid volume.
Still not sure whether to take it back over that as I may end up with more issues.
If you figure how many of these things they sold just because a hundred or so people say it is common doesn't mean squat. I have really tried everything to reproduce that and I have had other people listen to see if they could hear anything and there is nothing at all.
I bet most people that do not have the issue just do not post about it. I mean nobody is going to start a thread saying they do not have the issue. lol Maybe I should start one? I will title it:

[Q] Questions for g2 owners :)

Hello, thanks for if you decide to help me out here haha.
Anyways, i own a nexus 4 i love this thing, i also hate somethings about it Camera, Speaker, Volume in general, battery.
The lg g2 looks like a beefed up nexus 4 to me, and i really wanna get it and for those of you who came from a nexus 4 how do you like it?
hows the volume i read somewhere its looks like dual speakers but one is a mic?
and that its really really low? and call quality is OKAY but not the best.
thanks!
I sold my Nexus 4 the first day I had it. G2 is in a different league. Or course, it cost twice as much too!
I got rid of my n4 for this... The hardware is just so much better. I love a huge battery. I love that it has a huge battery and its not a phablet. Its like at&ts answer for a RAZR maxx. I absolutely love it

I still have my n4 for now but looks like I will be selling it and keeping the g2, its hard to go back other than on the software front.
I just got the g2 and all I can say is wow.
Rely nice phone. Speaker are better than gs4, but cannot compete with htc one.
The nexus 4 speaker doesn't even come close to the g2. I like when your online n receive a call a little window pops up with caller ID n if u want to answer or ignore

Hello, thanks for if you decide to help me out here haha.
Anyways, i own a nexus 4 i love this thing, i also hate somethings about it Camera, Speaker, Volume in general, battery.
The lg g2 looks like a beefed up nexus 4 to me, and i really wanna get it and for those of you who came from a nexus 4 how do you like it?
hows the volume i read somewhere its looks like dual speakers but one is a mic?
and that its really really low? and call quality is OKAY but not the best.
thanks!

Well i'm coming from the Gnex and the camera is great even if i just toyed around with it. volume is loud even from the tiny speaker. call quality was great actually. ( was actually playing something to test out. also headphones and aux sounds better)
i actually recieved it today and i put it thru its paces in this short day and its still going strong with battery. i would of replaced the battery on my gnex 2 times already.
Its funny how all the reviews are bashing the speaker all all us old nexus owners think its amazing! I guess relativity is a hell of a thing haha

But the Nexus 5 is around the corner
G2 is a great phone for me so far. Only thing to hold out for would be the Nexus 5, but that most likely won't be on verizon so this is the best we get right now.
