Random audio distortion on Slim ROM - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running 4.2.1 Slim ROM, and have been noticing some hard to reproduce audio distortion. This isn't speaker distortion this is a pure audio playback problem.
It sounds sort of like stuttering mixed with an extremely elongated digital distortion. I originally noticed it using the unmolested Franco kernel. Flashed trinity and it seems better but it still happens. Most noticeable while multitasking but not consistent.
I've heard it using Google Music app and YouTube app.
Any body else run in to this?

I have this problem too. It's annoying at first but I got used to it. lol IDK the problem. Maybe it's the kernel? I'm using franco and smoothrom.

I'm having this audio stutter problem too. my nexus 7 is running 4.2.1 stock rooted but the stuttering was there before I rooted it.
It seems to affect the stock music app more than others (PlayerPro or PowerAmp)
I'm wondering if this happens on 4.1 or is it another 4.2 bug.

Microphone sensitivity too high

Any way to fix this? Voxer makes me sounds way too loud even if I hold it arms length from me. Sounds fine if I talk from my nexus 7 tho. Nexus 4 the Mic gain is too high.

Am I really the only one with this problem?
Maybe its Paranoid Android?
Tried different kernels... no difference.

I noticed that I did pick up unwanted noise on recording videos, but really I would rather it be too sensitive than not enough.

Buzzing Noise When Using Headphones

I've heard a lot about a buzzing noise coming from the earpiece, but whenever i plug in my headphones it makes a really annoying buzzing noise. I'm running AOKP Build 1 with Franco #28 kernel and the beats audio mod. I'm also using original Apple earphones. Any thoughts on how to fix this without flashing AOKP from scratch again? Thanks!

I recall someone else saying Bluetooth being on can cause problems. If it's on try turning it off.
Otherwise I don't know, mines OK with skull candies.
Bluetooth is off :/

Same here ...... It has something to do with the radio modem as when I was on 4.2.2 with older boot loader this did not happen but after I switched to the newer radio modem the buzzing started and man its annoying! Anyone's got any solution?

I had an app that trigged the proximity sensor. Uninstalled the app and the noise was gone.

I have the same problem, but I didn't install the app you all had mentioned, the sound only happened when the music app is on (poweramp and play music)... don't know how to fix that...

Is it like a actual buzzzzzzzz sound or a rapid click click click sound? If it's actually a click noise, it is the proximity sensor, and you have some other app constantly running it. If it's a buzz, are you running a custom kernel? Do you usually crank up the volume? Have you messed with headset gain?
I have the same problem. not rooted
and its not buzzing.its more like rapid clicking, but I don't think I have any apps that use the proximity sensor. idk what to do fam
Try a different kernel

What the f has the kernel to do with this buzzing noise? This is one of the stupidest suggestions I read in my entire life.
The noise is hardware related. You can't fix it with software.
Guys, you have to accept that the Nexus 4 ist a cheap built smartphone with a LOT of problems, and I am not talking about the bad camera or the bad display in general.
I am talking about the huge and small bugs, for example.:
- noise in earspeaker
- buzzing noise with headphones
- heat-problems (YES, the N4 actually HAS heat-problems)
- Sleep of Death (LED and sound is working, but screen is black -> restart with Power+Volume)
- not-responsive screen when unlocking/not able to answer a call because of this
- dark line on the left side of the screen (especially on grey backgrounds)
- (maybe I am the only one with this problem, but this happens very often) when I am trying to unlock the ring, the status-bar slides down
- WiFi and GPS problems
- and more
Sure, the N4 was really cheap in its price and the problems testify that this phone is cheap.
The parts they used are cheap (e.g. DA-converters, display (don't tell me that it is possible to adjust the screen colors), speakers, cameras, microphone etc.). Maybe also the engineers who built the N4 were cheap.
Before I bought the N4 I had a Nexus S. It was WAY better than the N4 in many points.
I always recommended the Nexus line to my family and friends. But after using the N4 for long enough I will never recommend it again.
It's a piece of crap with a well-meant OS and causes headaches.

Nexus 4 mic issue

When I record video the audio is really distorted. If I'm playing loud music in my car the audio comes out really bad on my nexus 4. Is there a fix for mic gain?

Dear Blankit,
I had similar issue while recording videos from concert. It seems its a common issue with nexus 4.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046613 [reference thread]
The way I fixed the issue was downloading a custom faux kernel or any other kernel which supports sound modifications. I flashed the kernel and decreased the mic gain while recording the video. That worked for me. I did this when i was on JB 4.2 now its been a long time since I tested the sound control. Maybe you can find a kernel which lets you control the sound and that should fix your problem.
If you are on JB 4.3 then below is the thread for AK which seems to have Faux Sound control v3.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2394484 [AK 4.3]
Hope that helps

Bad sound quality on 4.4 custom Roms

Hallo,
I would like to make a simple question...
Tried 2 custom 4.4 Roms on my LG G2 (droidkangs and mahdis) and in both versions I noticed the same problem...
The speaker sound (even though loud) is of VERY bad quality when playing deeper sounds like basses!
In stock Roms the sound (same MP3) is crystallclear... Tried many settings in DSP manager... Tried almost everything I found in iNet, but I am going back to stock based Roms as on max volume its like my speaker is broken :/ (when I use headphones or BT headset I don't have that issue)
Could any1 please tell me what the reason for this problem is?? Is it normal that the sound quality from speaker is so much worse than the stock versions??
And can this be fixed?
Please, if some1 knows the answer just give me the info as I rly don't want to go back to stock Rom :/
Thank you!
I have the same problem on Cyanogenmod 11 and Paranoid .
CyanogenMod the sound is pretty low, on Mahdi's pretty high. Try equalizer settings on those ROMs. It might require a tweak to your liking.

Same here. Running CM11 and speaker quility cracks up when it gets loud. I tried messing with Viper, but alas, no improvement. Don't think there's a fix yet though..

Mahdi has same issue if you max sound... I think that all the 4.4 roms have this problem so flashing other customs won't help.
i never use the speaker because i thought it was terrible to begin with but i just tested it out and and mine does not get very loud but i use headphones 99.999.9999999999999 percent of the time but it is definately a bug but other than this bug i really havent had anyother problems
Getting the same poor phone call sound quality d803 carbon

Perfect phone but bluetooth streaming sucks.

Is there a file that we could modify to up the quality of the streaming audio? I remember on my nexus 4 running jelly bean I had to mod a file to fix the same problem. This is the only problem I'm having with this phone. I'm in my car for a long period of time throughout the day and im tired of the highs crackling and muddy bass. So if someone could give a helping hand it would be much appreciated. Thanks

VS980 here .. Streaming (to car) via bluetooth is awesome, same as hard-wired (old ears maybe but can't tell the difference).
Have tried with Belkin CarBT --> it broke (POS, barely 2months, customer-service (outsourced) sucks) --> currently with Kinivo BTC450
No issue with Stock or Malladus or Madhi or DU or Slimkat ... no modifications.

I too have this problem, but only at louder volumes. I'm on LS980. Problem goes away on AOSP-based ROMs.
