[Q] Simple Mobile - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm looking to dump Sprint because for the past 2 years i have been paying for 4G service that i don't receive (because they have not rolled it out in my area). Anyway I'm looking to get a Google Nexus 4 and going with Simple Mobile. My main question is does anyone here have a Nexus 4 on the Simple Mobile network with the 50 dollar 4G unlimited are there gb caps in place or is it truly unlimited 4G?

If you want to stay unlimited stick with Sprint everyone else throttles your speed when you reach the cap so you will see slow speeds once you do reach that cap again if you use a lot of data. It sucks if your in a area with no LTE but be patient.

Thank you guys, although the caps im pretty sick of sprint so i will try SiMo, if they dont work out i will most likely end back up at Sprint. Again thank you.

Simple Mobile (aka T-Mobile) offers unlimited service. The only catch is "Tethering" is not allowed. As you are in a market where Sprint does not have good 4G, I would confirm that T-Mobile has "Excellent" HSPA+ service, or you may be stuck with a GSM phone that does not work with CDMA Sprint. T-Mobile HSPA+ is nice in big markets, but almost useless in small ones.

[Q] Tmobile Bandwidth Limit

Hello Everyone, I am currently with Tmobile and I have my G2 rooted and I love it. I use the portable hotspot feature quite a bit at work so I'm signed up for tmobiles "unlimited" internet on my phone. However Once I hit 5gb bandwidth for the month I received a text message saying that I had hit the 5gb cap for the month and for the duration of the pay period I would still have internet since I'm signed up for "unlimited" but I would have a reduced speed... Let me tell you right now its very reduced. So my first question is, do you guys have this problem? and my second question is, which service providers don't have this lame cap? My friend is on Sprint currently and he's used 12GB bandwidth so far this month and can still use his 4G speed which would be nice. So I may go with Sprint however I'd like to keep my options open so do you guys know if Verizon or At&T have the cap as well? Also what kind of phones would you guys suggest with the two? Preferably I'd like to fix the problem with Tmobile however I don't see that happening because when I went in the store they said I was already at the most internet /month.
Currently the only 2 providers that dont have a cap AFAIK are sprint and verizon. ATT used to have one, but was taken away back when the first ipad came out and now they only offer 2gb and charge you 10 dollars a gig over that. Sprint phones arent all that great right now ,probably the best phone on sprint right now IMO, would be the epic 4g. Verizons best phone is the thunderbolt, which ironically isnt for sale yet, but it will this month. they also have the iphone and some other android phones (fairly outdated at this point)
You got to remember that verizon is more expensive than t-mobile. Sprint is fairly expensive too and their 4g phones require an extra 10 dollar fee for bs reasons. If you want the unlimited data youre going to have to pony up the cash.
If i was you i would wait for the dual core phones to come to those carries, the droid bionic for verizon and who knows what for sprint.
Ps. I heard that verizon is throttling the top 5% of its users. I read it in engadget but alas, i dont have that carrier/problem so i havent looked into it.
Hope i helped a little
Edit: forgot to mention that if you want 4g you have to make sure that you are in an area that has the 4g specific for that carrier. Your friend has 4g on sprint so that means youre at least in a wimax (sprint 4g) area.
Verizon has a different 4g (LTE) that might not be in your area at this point in time.
Also sprint has 3 4g phones, t mobile has 3 and verizon has only 1 and it isnt even out yet.

personally with the price per month my wife and i are paying for tmobile i would never leave.
best way to do it is to have 5 member family plan... cheapest way at least.
A T-Mobile tech support rep told me that he was told in a recent meeting that they were going back to the 10 gig cap. He said a date wasn't mentioned...who knows if this is true or not, I'm just sharing what I was told.
That was amazingly helpful and I have a lot to consider now. I do have it pretty nice with Tmobile right now because we have a 5 family member plan and if there is a prospect of 10gig coming out then I will probably wait it out. And if the new phones come out and I still want to change then I will. Thank you so much for your help!
There is a way to defeat the throttle. I've never hit the cap myself so haven't tried it. Five year old data plan with 10gb? Limit. But for root users it involved removing 3 files from the radio? Try searching the dev threads. I do remember that T-mo was the only carrier that this would work with. The throttle takes place on your device.

Nope, my bad. I'm wrong on this one. Good luck!
Well Tmo finally saw what we were doing in data throttling and it did work realllly well..but all good things come to an end.
I have however managed to "defeat" throttling by....staying under the 5GB. Through wifi surfing. I have wifi at home and at work and those are the two places you find me . Simple.
But its a DAMN SHAME because I never rode wifi before because HDSPA is faster than wifi. Takes me twice as long to download a CM nightie on wifi.
Tmo has got to smarten up. Still they're still my favorite compared to the others.

Your broadband connection being shared via wifi must really be slow for HSDPA to be faster. What is it, DSL?
HTC Vision (G2) - CM7 RC1 B12
I agree, your broadband connection via wifi must really suck. I get an average of 13gb down & just under 3 gb up. Some day's I'll get a little over 15gb down. You should probably get a new router.

Anyone still have Unlimited 3G...?

Just a quick question to all you 4G phone users out there. I'm looking forward to the Evo 3D when it's out. As you can see, I'll be coming from a CDMA Hero. I'm on the Simply Everything plan with Unlimited 3G, but was told that if I were to get any of the new 4G phones that I'd have to change to a plan that's Unlimited 4G with the 5GB/mo. capped 3G, regardless of whether or not I live anywhere near a 4G area or not.
My question is this. Are there any of you out there that have a 4G phone, are in an area with no 4G coverage, and are still on a plan with Unlimited 3G, or are we all going to be forced to change over to a 4G/3G plan, even though 4G may not roll out to our specific areas any time soon?
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
You will not have to change plans. You will only be required to change plans if you have a plan that does not include unlimited data. 4G coverage is depended on if your phone has an antennae that will receive the signal. An extra $10 monthly fee is required for everyone which began on January 31st, 2011.
I don't think that's accurate. My 3G data is definitly not capped at 5GB/month. I've heard that applies to mobile broadband cards not phones.
^ Shift Faced
I've never used UNDER 5 gigs a month, and I've never had a 4G signal in the entire time I've owned my Shift. Used 12gigs my first month (had a 7gig download just to update World of Warcraft on a new PC) and Sprint could care less.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
Yeah the cap is only for 3g/4g internet cards, not phones.
I came from a hero to my shift and still have my unlimited 3g

Thanks tons guys. That's a relief to hear. So, pretty much I'll just have to pay an additional $10/mo. then. I can dig that.
I do wonder why that differs from mobile broadband though, but that's a question for another forum I think. lol

I can confirm too. Came from the Hero to the Shift, stayed on the same plan. Unlimited data, doesn't matter if it's 3G or 4G. And yes, they tack on the extra $10 a month when you re-up your contract.

Is MetroPCS unlocking phones?

Hey guys, I was searching the interwebs for some general unlocking info and I found this from a couple years ago. Pretty interesting I think, what happened to this? Are they actually reflashing phones in-store? As far as the "gradual opening of the US wireless market"...it's gradual indeed
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/2541615...ss/t/metropcs-customers-bring-your-own-phone/
.
Thread moved. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.
Failure to comply with forum rules will result in an infraction and/or ban depending on severity of rule break.
MetroPCS will allow you to use some CDMA handsets from other providers, yes. But you don't get data; you'll have to figure out how to do that yourself. I know plenty of folks who put OG Droids and EVOs on Ghettro, though I don't know why... 1xRTT is pretty miserable, way too slow for a real smartphone... and their LTE isn't compatible with Verizon LTE handsets afaik.

Interesting. So are GSM data standards are more inter-compatible between carriers than with CDMA? (I had to look up what 1xRTT is =) )

It's the same principle, each carrier runs their network on different frequencies, except most who use the same technology also use the same texting/phone frequencies.
If Metro had the same 3G bands as Verizon, a Verizon phone would work fine.
MetroPCS doesn't have EV-DO at all.
Yes they do. if you are using their latest .prl (3025) and your phone is 3G capable, you will get 3G in the rare places where it is available. i live in nyc and did not get 3g on metro unless i went to Brooklyn . i used the speedtest app and it got 300ish kbps on an evdo network. not bad speed for metropcs, but very slow compared to what im using now.
Check here if you don't believe me:

There are two stores around me that do it. $50 to get your phone on there network. Only one of them does the data. Not sure how much they charge. But it's not officially done by metro. It's individuals who work in the store and the money goes to them.

What's double data. I typically use around 150 gb a month. That's why I like unlimited.
I met a guy recently on Simple Mobile and he seemed happy, I'm thinking of switching soon. I mean, unlimited 3G data, text and talk for $40 a month including international texting? Considering my phone only does 3G (Vibrant) anyways...
But, I also don't use that much data.

They have a promo where if you order 2GB for 30$ you automatically get 4GB and, pay for 5GB ($50) get 10GB, and so on....
ALSO: To anyone thinking of Simple mobile go with the higher priced option. The 40$ dollar option doesn't give you access to 4G speeds (T-Mobile's HSPA+ in this case) even if your phone is only 3G capable you will see a speed boost.

[Q] T-Mobile Monthly 4g Prepaid Speed

Hello,
Sorry if this is redundant but I have searched for a while and I couldn't find anything.
Clearly alot of N4 users are using the $30 T-Mobile monthly 4G plan (http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/monthly-4g-plans) but the Google play N4 does not have 4g unlocked. I read somewhere that the T-Mobile plan is either 4G or EDGE speeds. Is that true, or will there be 3G speeds as well. In addition, will the method to unlock 4G on the N4 allow 4G for T-Mobile's monthly 4G.
tl;dr:
1. Is there 3G for the $30 Unlimited data T-Mobile Monthly 4G plan?
2. Can the N4 use the 4G if there is a network where I live?

T-Mobile's current "4G" is just HSPA+ branded as "4G". Some areas have HSPA+ 42 coverage which is not too far off from LTE speeds.
1. To answer your first question, there is 3G for the Montly4G plan. You can manually select your network type on the phone. If you want HSPA+, you can use that, or even EDGE if you want it. You can toggle that on your phone.
2. Yes, if the area in which you live has HSPA+ coverage you will be able to use it. Once T-Mobile starts rolling out their LTE network on the AWS band next year, your Nexus 4 will be able to use it.
3. There is no need to "unlock" the 4G.
4. It's super simple to set up your monthly4G plan. You don't even have to manually enter your APN settings.
5. Don't worry about speed. I can get ~22Mb/s down on HSPA+ :http://imgur.com/SBJt7. I can't tell the difference in speed between my iPhone 5 on AT&T LTE (~29Mb/s) and my Nexus 4. Speed is not an issue.
I activated mine a week ago so if you have any questions don't hesitate to contact me.
Thanks s much for the quick and concise reply!
Now all I need is the N4 to be back in stock.
Holy ****. No disrespect to you, OP because it isn't your fault but this is a prime example of how the different branding of "4G" is confusing as **** to people. Glad you got your answers though OP

Changing carriers

Hi, XDA
Needed a little help currently here in the good old U.S.A and on verizon wireless i am thinking about switching carriers one reason is my phone of choice is the Htc One, also thinking of switching because of the things that i can do on some of the other networks here in the states like talk and surf at the same time not only on 4g lte but also on 3g hspa+, which is another thing that i liked because if im in an area that 4g lte is not available i can fall back on hspa+ which is faster than verizon cdma 3g network that tops out at 1.5-2mb down and .4mb up.
The reason why i am holding on to verizon is that I have unlimited data no throttling or data overages and I am planning to buy my phones at full retail to keep me out of contracts with these companies and also keep my unlimited data because i use alot of data i mean 8gb a month avaerage over 4months i guess if i stay with verizon i would have to settle for the samsung plastic s4 or wait for the google x phone. just want to hear some opinions or advice thanks in advance.
Sprint is your only option for unlimited data. They don't have HSPA, but are substantially cheaper than Verizon.
I just switched from Verizon to ATT yesterday coming from Unlimited as well.
I switched mainly because of the lack of service in my area of work and lack of availability of phones. Does going from Unlimited to 5Ggb suck, yes, but I also have service where I work and will be able to get the beloved HTC One. I'll just need to keep an eye on my usage from now on.
I pay $10 for every GB I go over which doesn't sound too bad to me.

When my unlocked HTC One arrives I will trim the sim and use it.
I'm joining my fiance's AT&T plan here in NY, there data for two lines isn't horrible. $150 for Unlimited Talk/Text and 4GB shared data for $150 for a few business/pleasure phones isn't too bad, she's paying $100 a month for her non-smartphone though, ****ing crazy!

Then I say Sprint. They are about 90% done with their Network Vision upgrade in Chicago.
You can visit Sensorly.com so that you can see how their LTE coverage is in your area.
