Time to change rom - Desire HD General

last time i tried a ICS or jellybean rom was about 5 or 6 months ago, they all looked promising but all had little quirks like gps problems , camera not great quality, audio etc etc, bluetooth. this kinda put me off them as i need my phones features to work.
Just wondering if any of the latest roms have managed to iron out these problems ? EG gps is important to me and works well in ARHD.
Id love to try the latest jellybean release but kinda worried ill start finding bugs again once i start using it.

Are you interested only in AOSP based or in Sense ROMS as well?

Would like to try something other than sense based, tried sabsa for a while but didnt really get on with it, found ARHD faster and less laggy after a few days.

codefireX. There are a few small bugs but everything important works perfectly. You can try the CM10.1 nightlies too, but any bugs in those will depend on the CM team fixing them. The developer only builds from CM source and doesn't focus on bug fixes because his priority is codefireX.

Thanks for that , gps is working good with this rom ?

Yes, it works very well. I get a quick lock with 8-11 satellites. Only problem for me is my GPS antenna cover which has become loose and I need to fix. Many people have this problem with the DHD/I4G. The ROM has no problem with GPS.

try Jelly Time rom it's stable

2 days ago I installed PACman v19.3. It's a JB rom, clean, fast interface (Trebuchet launcher), many settings to customize your device (overclocking CPU included). The only thing I had to install to get it fully working was KangBang kernel v2.4 to get my WiFi working.
So far, I'm really pleased with this rom, it runs much faster and smoother than Sense based roms and you have more RAM available for aplications (I'm always on around 250-350 mb free in RAM).

I've been using JellyTime for months and had no issues with it, now its moved onto 4.2 I think its amazing. I'm a heavy web and navigation user with Bluetooth and not had any major issues.

I sincerely recommend ViperDHD v2.1.1 I had the best ROM on your Desire HD everything works. Read the section of the ROMs. S all works.

ViperDHD might be a good choice if you want to simulate One X. But performance and quality wise (undersized rosie aka one x screen emulation, some poorly resized icons), its not so good when compared to other Sense4 ROMS.

I really recommend taking a look at sci miui by a user. Been running it for about 2 weeks and its the smoothest rom I've ran, granted its based on gingerbread but If you want reliability you won't get much better
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using xda app-developers app

I have been waiting for a stable JB ROM for a long time as well, but was continuously following the development and reviews of most of the ROMs.
Last week I've decided that it is time to try a JB ROM, because most of them reports very few or none issues.
I've installed JellyTime 6.1, and I have to say I'm extremely satisfied. It is rock stable, camera works perfectly, excellent audio quality, GPS had a little problem which was resolved by updating to the latest RADIO, and everything else just works great.
So the new Android 4.2 features were definitely worth the upgrade.

Like -SmOgER said, ViperDHD is a good ROM but has some laggs which get worse over time (just for me; may different for others).
I recommend using Sabsa Prime. Please try V12 first because it's Sense 4 Lite and quite fast. The current V13 is quite laggy but smoother than ViperDHD.
May you want to try Sabsa Prime V14 which will be uploaded in the minute I'm writing this.
If you want a Sense-Free Rom I' recommend this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2093845

Lags are not really a problem if you use supercharger from zeppelinrox and set the engine flush script on a scheduler to run from time to time.

Is there "developer options" in JellyTime 4.2?
I cannot find it in system settings.
Thanks.

Have you selected all performance mods in aroma? Try setting backgr process limit to 4 as well. For me, there is almost no lag at all. It's at least as fast as v12, if not faster

ROM Reviews and Discussion

Hi guys,
Still on stock ROM, but looking to flash a new one really soon - looked through both Original and Development threads and haven't been very confident so far. Why?
The most popular ones seem to be Lightening and VillainROM, but I haven't found any comprehensive reviews of their battery life and performance - VillainROM doesn't have screenshots either. Mostly the posts on their threads are questions or debugging or pointing out bugs, so its hard to get a proper gauge.
So what are your thoughts on the ROMs so far? Looking for the usual - good battery, stability, performance. I don't care much for the blue of Lightening but as long as it works, it works. What makes it different from Villain?
Also appreciate any other ROMs that may be good to install!
Thanks!
One of the best and smoothest ROMs I've tried has been CyanogenMod 7. Its stable (even in the 7.1 RC), fast, good battery life and reliable. Check it out, its a definite favorite in my book
Sent from my Droid 1 CM7.1.0 RC1
So far I've only tested VillainROM. I'm waiting for a more stable CM7 to try it out, but until then VR seems to be okay. To be honest there's nothing special about it. Battery life is acceptable, it's close to a stock rom, it doesn't have bugs, it has Nimpo kernel, vrtweaks which let you install some mods more easily, and the devs are skilled and helpful. That's enough for me

Which one of this roms has BLN already activated?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I've now used villain, darkys, adam's aosp, CM7 and MIUI.
All great roms. Villain and darky are both quite close too stock TW. AdamG AOSP is as about as close to androidstock as you can get-which is clean and simple. CM7 is the ultimate ROM for the tweaker and hacker and its also v fast.
MIUI is the most visually different rom. It looks completely different and has some great visual cues. Battery life its also v good on the latest build (.29 beta 32). Its the one I'm using at the moment, but I switch between it and CM7 on occasion.
you won't go wrong with any and although they aren't fully stable (the non TW ones). I've never had any stability issues with them. Just be prepared to not have an fm radio or full bluetooth audio...
My 2 cents, hope it helps!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
P.s. Not sure about lightening but one of the earlier builds of villain gave me the best battery life ever on this phone. I think it was 1.4, but this was about a month ago..

There are quite a few, VillainROM is included. You can also flash a BLN compatible kernel to make BLN work.
Thanks, I may want to stick close to TW-based ROMs for the time being until CM7 is stable and GS2-friendly then I've done MIUI before, its a fantastic ROM for older phones, but of course there's problems with translations sometimes and the UI gets old/too iphone after a while.
currently on lightening 2.2 with nimphetamine 2.04 kernal. More than happy with my battery. I get more than a days use out of it quite easily, battery loss is about 1% an hour in standby and the rom itself is very stable. Ive never had a force close, reboot or anything. Im using the steel blue theme too as i like the look of the icons more.
Ive no plans to try any other roms until a fully released cynagen rom is available which i will try, just to see what the fuss is about more than anything.

I would also like to know.
A VillainROM user here along with ninphetamine kernel I find this the best combination, battery life is awesome and the devs are useful. It's smooth fast and just well top notch.
I've tried many roms but always come back to VR. The best thing to do is try them and find one for your own liking there are dozens to choose from now. In the future I'll try CM7 as I used to run that on my DHD but as of now I'm happy with the TW roms.

Batista70 ROM w/ Ninpo's 2.0.5 kernel here, so far so good. Runs smooth and quite battery-friendly.
I've used Lite'ning also but somehow the I've run into some battery drain issues with it before. Eye'ing CM7 once it gets a stable release.
The latest CM7 nightly, 13, is running really well, it all seems just as it was on my Desire so far, no crashes, just a lockscreen hang every now and again.
Don't know about the Bluetooth audio as I prefer a wired headset.

[POLL] Which ICS rom do you use?

Title is self-explanatory, which do you use and why?
Currently playing with Deck's latest PB9. Tried AOKP Build28. Both need some patching on the edges to get things working, but Deck has HWA.
I use miui its nice, almost lol
AOKP M4 has Bern treating me great. Haven't tries decks yet, but the HWA sounds enticing. But for reliability and customization, I've been hanging with AOKP. Haven't tried drews since p6, I think.

I feel the same way, I love drew and decks work, but I need all my customization options! I just wish HWA would get into AOKP, and I wouldn't ever really complain much, everything else works well, and oh my the battery life.
Slackin scott, where is your vote?
I use jared's ICS because its stable. Playing with gummy because its also stable. I'd recommend both roms.
I've been using Decks since PB4. I tried AOKP milestone 4, but couldn't get GAPPS to work. I use Miui ICS, but it was very laggy compared to Decks.
I've run all the ICS on a slot in Boot Manger Pro.

There was a Gapps file that was posted in the Boot Manager forums. ie:init2winit.
It would work with AOKP's ICS. Not sure why the regular Gapps wouldn't work though.
I've also flashed all of them in to BM slots.
For ICS Roms I've played with some of JTG's early builds, Gummy, Drew's, AOKP Milestone 4, And now Deck's.
I ran PB5 for a day and now I'm planning to flash PB9 in the next day or so.
Deck's stuff looks good. All of the Dev's are making great strides with ICS though.

I am using Gummy's ICS on my phone. So far it is stable and I have had no problems other than some apps needing to be updated to work properly. The camera and camcorder does have some minor glitches, but I can overlook them. I really like all of the tweaks that comes with the ROM, you can set up the phone how you like. It is a great stable ICS ROM to use as your daily driver.

I was not aware of that. Of course, I'm not registered on their forum, which I hardly browse at it too.
I do find decks works in regards to lack of lag and smoothness. I do shut off all animations, so all the eye candy is wasted on me. I did find PB5 was significant less stable on Tiamat ICS kernal than the stock; I've read, but don't know for certain, that the stock kernal is Tiamat based anyway. Although, deck's has some of the same issues found on all ICS builds. Although, the camera preview has been fixed; camera still a little glitchy. WiFi seems to need a few tweaks.
What I do like, OnLive and their Universal blue tooth controller, work well.
on a side note, I'm not all that thrilled with Nova Launcher. I'm more partial to Launcher Pro with Folder Organizer. I guess I've been on Windows too long, and like to group things together, yet keep my panes clean looking.
In the end, all the ICS roms are making strides.
I've used MIUI ICS, because ICS doesn't have 4G anyway. It had random reboots, but I didn't see other people with the same problem on the forum so I dunno.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1534492
i've used a lot of ics rom's so far (basically all but AOKP and MIUI) and i like gummy so far. No random reboots, really smooth, i wish it had full HWA so i could use chrome, i really like the softkeys, but the keyboard needs to be fixed when you use the softkeys ( half of the bottom row of buttons is gone) and the little blue line on the top bar was gone. i havent used deck's in a while so it might really be improved. the only suggestion i would make for it is to tweak the kernel and the keyboard layout to take off the capacitive buttons and turn off the lights behind them.
AOKP right now, will likely try Decks since there is HWA.
Been running the Gummy port since it was released. Loving it so far. Super speedy and works well. The only problem is lately i'm getting more and more FC's on the stock features (email, music, gallery, file explorer, etc) not sure if it's a flaw in the ROM or a by-product of my meddling. Either way, still a great rom!
Ive used aokp, hmmm yup. Its good.
Ive also used gummy ics. Yup good.
Both have same rom control and pretty smooth. But many apps that i use wont respond or work too slow. Ex NFS hotpursuit.
Now im using PB9 decks-ics. Everything on my apps works now. modern combat 3 is now really smooth.

I have been running the unoffical CM9 by jmztaylor since the first release. Has been the best for my phone at least and very good battery life. You should just try them out and go with the one that your phone has the best results with.
gummy worms is still a valid ics rom but you are gonna be lacking hardware accelleration (hwa) and camera/camcorder can work but also is being reported broken sooo yeah
the lastest of aokp is known for being full of reboots (but as a side note i have only had 1 reboot so far but has some graphical glitches with menu's but nothing to knock it down any so again beware it could be different on your phone) but b33 has been the strongest /most stable but is lacking the camera fix but there is a zip you can flash with it.
jamie has an ics rom with hwa but doesnt have the customization tweaks that you find in aokp but i have had ZERO reboots in my experinces there is a camera fix used in aokp will most likely work for you here to since they are based off the same (correct me if im wrong please)
decks i have little experience with the latest builds so i'll leave someone else to input on that
same iwth cm9 but its been comin to the party a bit later but i hear its stable and on its way to being a good daily rom for most and i think the camera works but no camcorder/panoramic(again correct me if im wrong please i havent run this particular one so im pulling that from memory of reading thread)
I installed the Unofficial CM9 and I was all good until its start freezing and rebooting

Swipers MIUI ICS is amazingly stable.
You can't beat it
I've been using Deck's builds as daily drivers for a while now not quite as many features as AOKP or CM9, but quite stable on my handset. YMMV of course.
With ANY of the ICS ROMs you're looking at feature incomplete alpha or beta level builds. So "stable" is a relative term.
Dark light version 3.5 has been the most stable on my evo, plus its all themed out in black and white.

KWIQ ICS is working for me
ben.nesheim mentioned jamie's rom, that is KWIQ ICS. I was running AOKP all through April and was liking the progress. I think after they added the HWA it got unstable for me on my phone so I ventured out and tried KWIQ. It just worked on my phone giving me everything I needed. I recently added the patch for the camera and now the only two things I am missing are front camera (would like to try Skype again) and 4g. I would be happy enough with this setup if this is all I ever got. I now have Chrome browser and all my apps I care about. I am one happy camper.
And Jamie has commented that he is making progress on an update to be coming out as soon as he feels it is stable.
AOKP here for a few days now. Everything works very well except Hulu and Netflix (haven't tried Youtube yet) and once in a while the camera app stops/freezes for a minute.
Everything else is butter.
In addition to the original question, do any of them have fully functioning camera (front and back) and camcorder?
I tried qwik ICS and it was stupid stable but didn't have working camera.
AoKP, run it on every device I have eexcept the photon cuz that POS is a pain to flash sh!t to so its stock rooted, but I have aokp on my Evo4g, kindle fire, Epic Touch 4g and my dads gNote

Now that you have been reccomended every ICS rom for the evo. Lol.
My oppinion: Download teamdirt's cm9 and AOKP Milestone 5. (Milestone 5 can be found on the aokp website) Try out both roms, starting with AOKP.
Reason: I work using my phone for GPS and, on average, 15 calls and 25 texts a day. This means that if I flash a rom, it gets the full daily driver test.
That being said, AOKP was smooth, fast, battery efficient, and even easier to use And navigate. My only problem was random hot reboots.
Cm9 was somewhat choppy at times, but comparable to AOKP. NO REBOOTS!
Final verdict: Decks Reloaded. Lol. I couldn't decide so I went back to Gingerbread.

DHD & JellyB & Fantastic Rom

Hello There
I am a new Owner of DHD - Just couple of days ago I received my new handset - after selling Apples iPhone 4 32GB.
I brought it from eBay at half the price that I got from selling iPhone(almost 2 years old).
Now to the point:
After rooting DHD and trying different roms base don Android 2.3.x and ICS And JB - Finally I set My eye and Phone of course on this amazing ROM:

It's super Fast - everything works - and much better and stable that any other rom I've tried and Beleive I have.
For last 4 days I installed almost 8 of them and this " JELLYTIME for DHD/Inspire4g - R14" by far most stable and fast version of them all.
It of course has its little quirks but nothing that affects functionality.
Recommending it wholeheartedly

I have been using JellyTime since R3 and love it
But I started getting the blackscreen problem from R15 onwards .
I tried R16, R17 & R17.1 all with clean installs and still got the issue.
Unfortunately as the DHD is my daily driver and I am traveling over the next few weeks, I need the stability of and battery life of Ice Cold Sandwich. Which is a real shame as I hate going backward.
As a newbie, I can't post to the dev forum, but I shall return to JellyTime in the near future, I want to see how good the DHD is on JB 4.1.2.

Simply because ICS and JB room were not build to run with DHD, so you can have some bugs like Camera, MMS, Batterylife etc...
Mostly all the bugs have been worked out on r18.1 of jellytime

AOKP or Sense

Which is the best system for your DesireZ?
Sense, beautiful in appearance, but using too much memory. aokp, light and fast, but can be a problem (icon under the articles distorted) Sorry for my english

which Rom? and whats your phone model?
AOKP for sure, faster, smoother and really good battery life
But that's only my oppinion, if you miss the sense tweaks better get a sense (maybe the one from viper)
I am using the JB testbuild from flinny...it's awesome

I prefer aokp. Sense is too heavy for that phone...

i have desire Z
I LOVED sense in every way - it's so complete out of the box and very visually pleasing, but it was a bit slowish, terrible multitasking, and battery performance suffered.
I'm using mimicry for the last 4 months and, I must say I'm quite happy, apart from MMS not working (seems to be some ICS general if you use separate APNs for data and mms) - It's blazing fast, multitasks and has at least 50% more battery efficiency.
I dislike all phone/dialer/contacts alternatives to sense and ICS (holo) theme, but I'm compromising for performance and battery life.
Sense for eye candy, AOKP for performance and extremely much tweaks. I run MIUI on my One X now, and it’s perfect.

Isn't Sense 4.0A from the HTC One V meant to be pretty lightweight, and more so than Sense 3.6? When I get a Desire Z I'm going for either Gen.Y Vision Sense 4.0A or an Andromadus CM9/ 10.
It is supposed to be lightweight - I haven't yet tried Gen.Y, but I doubt it will be lighter than sense 2 was with gingerbread. I hope I'm wrong.
And CM9/10 based ROMs are still smoother and offer better battery life than sense 2 ROMs.
I Love Sense!
I think it's the Android's equivalent of an iPhone in terms of slickness and UI design.
However, i found the best "Sense" version to be the good old 2.1 (with Sense 3 lock screen) and everything that came after is too heavy and a lot even lack features! While 2.1/3.0 gives you the best Performance/Features combo even for older phones.
When i don't use a Sense rom, then i try to make the AOSP rom to look as close to it as i possible can but every once in awhile i try a real Sense cause i miss it's visual aspects.
EliteMod -AOKP . - my current, most stable from. Which I found. Extremely customizable . Had it for 4-5 months now

Elite mod very slow for my DZ but YozgatG's Gen.Y VisionX R3 very fast, i cant understand :S
AOKP all the way for me.. much better UI(Jellybean) and much more faster that Sense too..
Trying out trickdroid desensed, and so far it seems awesome.
CM10.1 by Flinny. Everything starts up smoothly.
l like sense
sense3.5 or sense4.1
AOSP, hands down. AOKP's and Others just simply... start to lag after a day or two. Months on them and I simply can't take jerkiness and RAM lags, and of course I appreciate dev work, this is more of a phone memory limitation, and AOSP fits just right.

Same here!!! T-Mobile wifi calling + Elitemods ICS Rom is the best so far!! I can't choose CM10.1 bcuz they will never release the the RIL library's for wifi calling and for me that's a big no no bcuz I like longer battery!!
Anyways...haha AoKp IMO is better for functions and quicksettings and just better for more user friendly and different! No reboots in like 6months and perfect speed every time I boot rom!
