I have just flashed my first rom on my s3, I have done a factory reset and cleared the cache but my internal memory is saying i have just under 4g out of 16 is that about right or have i messed up.

Do you have pics, video, music or something on your internal sdcard? It doesn't get wiped (and it shouldn't) when doing factory reset or cache wipes. So if you wan't more space, backup important files to your pc and format internal sdcard.
Edit: All partitions (system, data, internal storage, cache) is in that 16gb flash chip, and if you make factory reset/data wipe and cache wipes, then only system, data and cache get wiped, not internal storage.

Even when I do that when I install a new rom photos and videos stay in the memory. I need all that gone as well. No external sd card is used only when I flash to a new Rom I use one

Unfortunately that won't get photos, and other media off the internal sdcard.
OP could try a factory data reset, located in privacy settings.
Just format your system and flash a stock rom, this ensure nothing is left on it . Than format your sd card if youre going to be including that when you sell it.
Hmmm, pictures of your wife? Could use that as a selling point, charge extra.

I'm thinking about wiping my Nook since I can't get WiFisleep to work anymore. But what will happen to all my books and comics stored on the EMMC then? I'm running cyanogen 7 from the internal memory with no traces of BN(the first thing you get when you boot is a small cyanogen logo). Do I have to back all those files up?
If you wipe data and Dalvik you most likely lose those files (depending on where you have stored this files to save). I would suggest backing them up to your uSD to be safe for now.

Wiping Davlik will not delete those files. I wipe it every time I upgrade to a higher nightly. In fact, it is all that I wipe. The real question is will an update or reflash solve the problem? If it were me, I would flash an update using ROM Manager, wiping Davlik and including gaaps in the update. If that does not solve the issue I would then start from scratch since a system wipe will be needed. However, backing up the apps first using Titanium Backup (but not system settings) will get you back after the new flash.

Wiping /data will indeed wipe all downloaded applications and their associated settings but I think the OP is referring to media files stored on the emmc partition and this will not be touched by a data, system or cache wipe, just like SD card contents won't be touched.
I store some basic media files on internal emmc making use of about 4GB spare capacity. This gets scanned as well as the stuff stored on SD.
When the guide says full wipe it means deleteing system, data, cache and davlik cache right?
Do i need to format my emmc too? What happens if i format it? TIA~

Generally that's what it means. But if you wipe the first three you have wiped dalvik.
One of the reasons we asked what you were trying to do, you asked about wiping emmc too. It makes a difference what you are trying to wipe whether you try to do anything to emmc.
Edit: By emmc, did you mean the emmc media partition or emmc as the whole device? I can think of only one reason to wipe the emmc media partition, and that is if you are transferring the device to someone else and you want none of your stuff on there. I think a "factory reset" wipes everything except /system.

It won't hurt to erase everything in your media partition. Whatever the nook needs, it will rebuild. No need to format, just delete things with your file manager.

so i wanted to do a wipe and clean install a rom.
in twrp i did wipe > format data... and the internal storage apparently meant the sdcard...is all my data completely gonezo, cuz that is NOT good......

When you chose FORMAT DATA, what did you do later to install a new rom?
Format Data = erase Internal Storage. You want to do a factory reset when changing ROMs
as you can see from the screenshot i have a folder called system data that is killing my onboard memory. i also have a ext 32gb card.
has anyone any idea why this is so big
i tried rom reinstall with full wipe of data factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvic and format system from mounts and storage but no luck.

Hi,
By any chance, could you have made a nandroid that saved itself to your internal storage?
I got it sorted thanks you where right btw backups on ext sd card but was also on internal for some reason.
