The phone is partitioned from the factory with 4GB allocated to the ROM and 4GB for general usage. It also looks like you're rooted and using a custom ROM... if so, safestrap partitions that 4 GB of usable memory so you can have a functioning side that leaves your stock ROM alone.

Its completely stock, and only a couple weeks old. I figured out what was eating my memory, some podcasts where being saved to internal memory. I'm still wondering whats with the partitions.

i am unable to find an answer to this, i have a galaxy s4 i337m from rogers
i used cf-auto root to root,
then used the one click tool to install CWM Touch 6.0.3.2
and then in recovery did a full wipe and reset
and installed [ROM] Google Edition 4.2.2 [Clean][Slim][280MB][2013.09.07]
everything is working well (great)
but free space was only just under 9 gigs, i thought google edition phone has over 12gb of available space, is this normal, is there something i can
do to get more space, did i miss something?
please don't recommend sd card as i already have one, i am just concerned where is my phone memory going?
That's how the S4 is partitioned. User-accessible amounts are not rom dependant. Cheers

Hey guys. So what's the best way to clear up RAM on my s4. Since I'm mf3 I can't install any roms. And my phones always 1.2gb being used after I've closed all apps and cleared the ram. Any tricks out there?
Thanks

In Linux, unused ram is wasted ram. My used ram is usually about 1.2 gb too.

Read the General Section. Look for MF3 threads. You can install roms. If you have a 16gb phone, memory may be tight.

Do not try to install a custom ROM if you're on MF3 - read around, no recovery, so if you mess it up somehow then you're hosed. 1.1-1.5gb used is common and unless your device is getting warm/hot - you're okay.
Well,
You "can" do it. Yes, you need to read and weigh pros and cons for you. Internal will still be about what you have. It is what I have. And, again a 16gb phone may may be "starpped" doing this--
If you haven't already found them--

Hey,
I previously installed Slimbean on my Galaxy S4 (jfltexx) 16GB. I was wondering why I only have about 9GB space left on my internal storage. So I googled the issue and found out that the Samsung Firmware needs that much space. So since I use Slimbean, why is there still only about 9GB free storage?
Are these old remains of the Samsung Firmware? And if yes how can I delete them so I get more storage?
thx in advance

The internal storage is partitioned but the partitions are not altered when you flash a different ROM. And so thats why you don't gain any extra space when flashing a smaller ROM like CM or slimbean.
You would have to flash an altered PIT file to change the space allocation like the discussion in the below thread. The risk of seriously messing up your ohone is high though and this also relates to the i9500 so it can't be used on a i9505

Definitely, you can pick up 32gb cards pretty cheaply now.
Also might be worth checking out this too, pretty useful.

You can buy models with bigger internal storage like GT-I9500, SHV-E300K/L/S or SGH-N045.

I simply use Foldermount from Play Store to move game data to the external SD. Since some games use 1.5GB+, this really makes a difference. The smaller files remain internal.
You can also mount the external SD as internal, then Android thinks the external one is the built-in. There are some flashable ZIPs in the development forums IIRC. Then you have the full-blown solution

hey m8, is there a way to re-partition without going back to the official samsung rom, people in that thread say that you cant flash a rom after you do that because the system partition would be too small, thanks
I just got a new N3 about 2 days ago. I've rooted by using the safestrap and installed JellyBeans ROM that I loved from my Note2. With only a couple apps installed, I'm getting conflicting data.
Application Manager says 16GB free and my largest app is Chrome at 73mb.
Storage also says 16gb free with applications of .94gb. However it also says I have Miscellaneous files at 6.77GB.
So I have a 32gb phone, and 1gb of apps leaving about 31 gb. I'm sure there is probably 6gb for the OS. I'm still missing roughly 6-8gb of storage.
I think it is because the Safestrap keeps the factory ROM in place and I put JellyBean in a virtual drive??? I have two roms maybe? But ROMs are only about 1.2Gb.
I'm not very high speed on this stuff.
Thanks for any explination you can provide.
Bingo. Safestrap essentially loads a new rom over stock (unless you flash in the stock slot), so that storage is not available.

How large did you make your ROM slot? Even though the compressed ROM isn't that big, the ROM slot can be up to ~8gb. Also keep in mind storage reporting tends to be inaccurate while booted into a ROM flashes onto a SS ROM slot.
BTW, for future reference questions should go in the Q&A subforum.

Even if you install a custom rom, you still won't get that 16 GB.
You have 9 GB for internal storage, 3 GB for the system partitions. So thats 12 GB. Where are the other 4? They got sucked into a black hole apparently.

Yeah, and of the space used on the internal storage, not nearly all of it is bloat ware. MOST of it is app data for stuff you actually use.
Bloat apps don't tend to be massive, even if they are memory hogs. The actual APK's are going to be between 300kb and 25mb (for the most part). So getting rid of the 10-15 totally bloat apps on your phone isn't going to free up multiple gigabytes of space.
Your best bet is to buy a 32gb micro sd card. They cost like $20 now. It will give you all the space you need for most users. If you really NEED more, $64 gb cards are available too.
