I'm on a mac and just followed efrants guide very closely and did everything via fastboot. I've been reading xda for years but it's the first time I've ever unlocked/rooted/custom-recoveried/custom-kerneled anything. The whole fastboot thing took me about 30 mins (including crossing fingers and panicking time) and worked just fine.
I was thinking of trying a toolkit, but the command line stuff all looked quite simple, and it seemed safer to actually learn something and have more control over what was going on.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and view on rooting .I will wait till this weekend to do it. I think I will go with the androidrootz.com tutorial to root it with a Mac. If anyone with more in info and tips are on till than

I don't think I've tried this one but I did try one similar to it and it worked pretty well. I'm a huge Linux advocate but I don't really see the point of full blown Linux on Android. I can see having a full blown terminal with all the binaries but IMO a GUI/DM isn't necessary.
I'm just looking for something I can mess around with to learn more when I'm not home.

You could try this https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Nexus7/Installation
Saw that before. I'm going to try that if I ever finish working on the damn house this weekend..FML.

Hi,
Is there anyway i can root my Nexus 7 without a PC. I only want to root it so I can install an app I saw that will block/remove ads but it requires root access and at the moment I have no access to a PC/Laptop.
Thanks,
Mat

Was meant to say I won't be installing custom roms or anything only want to remove ads so don't need anything complex.
Cheers!

I have nexus 7 which is unlocked but not root and it cannot be cannot connect to pc or laptop. Windows says USB DEVICE NOT RECONGNIZED What can i do to root it.
I had like 9 apps requiring an update. I clicked update all, then the screen went black and now nothing will happen. I've tried holding the power button down but that doesn't help. It was fully charged. Help! Sorry I can't search I'm traveling and I only had my nexus 7 and nexus 4 so hard to navigate the forums on a phone.

Edit: screen finally came back on but all the apps failed to update. Also I've noticed the tablet has been extremely sluggish and laggy the last few weeks..it never used to be like this when I first got it!

I am new to all of this rooting and flashing stuff, and I am afraid to do this on my own. I don't really have a lot of money to replace my Nexus 7 if I screw up. Has anyone used this app? Does it work? Any suggestions?

I wouldn't use it. I would just search the forum and learn to do stuff on your own.

Fastboot is the best way to get it done. It will also help avoid problems in the future. Once you know fastboot, there is very little you cant fix with relative ease.

Kingo is asking to install mtkcamera app during the installation. Is this a normal part of the root method

what did you find? I saw the same during root process and am a bit uneasy about camera apps at that point.

Check out this thread and decide for yourself. I figured so many others have used it, why not. I need root. Worked the 1st time through, up and running
