Bricked Nexus 7 after fotakill.apk - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It seems I have bricked my Nexus 7 16gb wifi by installing fotakill.apk.
The first reboot it looked like it had just hung on the boot ( the coloured cross ). After a few minutes the screen would show snow/distortion etc.
I can get to ClockWorkMod Recovery v6.0.1.0 but thats it. I have since erase user and system data etc trying to fully brick it. Now it sits at the Google boot screen and sits there.
I don't have the drivers installed from Nexus 7 Toolkit as I have formatted the PC that it was installed on, I have tried to install now but can't due to the current predicament.
I have tried a few of the options I have read on here and on the net but all revolve around having the drivers installed.
I can't return it to ASUS as its still showing ClockWork etc.
Any ideas

Try this reboot CWM recovery perform a wipe data factory reset then wipe cache and dalvik-cache try to reboot it...... Depending on what you might of already done it might boot!!!!! If it wont boot try this..... Download a custom ROM to your computer.
1. Plug your tablet into your computer's usb port reboot CWM go into "mounts and storage"
2. Select "mount USB storage"
3. Your SD Card will now be mounted on your computer. Drop the ROM of your choice from the DEV section onto the SD Card. (Also gapps if needed for your ROM)
4. "Go Back" then go into "install zip from sdcard" then "choose zip from sdcard"
5. Back out to main menu and reboot system now!!!!!
P.S Read all you can and understand everything before doing ANYTHING....... GL

Follow this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28963985
You will get the platform-tools folder to work with adb and fastboot here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1606444&d=1356973063
You will get your latest nexus factory image here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
You will get nexus 7 drivers on asus website, just manually select the fastboot driver from it when prompted.
REMEMBER: all your data will be lost and you will end up with a out-of-box firmware condition.

I am sometimes in a similar situation without a windoze machine with a Nexus rootkit. I found the solution (below) and downloaded & burned the CD so now i have a portable Nexus rootkit - very cool. Here it is -

[Q] Installing CyanogenMod on Nexus S 4G?

I am a total noob and am having trouble installing CyanogenMod onto my Nexus S 4G. I barely rooted the darn thing, and I am using a guide that involves ROM Manager. It says I have to mount the SD card using ROM Manager, but I can't figure out how to. If there is a better way to install CyanogenMod, please tell me, because all the guides I have been finding are way too technical for me to understand, and I have been trying. Any help is appreciated.
Can you tell us which guide you are using and which step you are on? I think you must mean ClockworkMod not ROM Manager.

If you already have clock work then all you have to do is drag and drop cyanogen into the root of your sd card. Then flash through clock work.
ht tp://ww w.redmondpie.com/install-cyanogenmod-7.1-gingerbread-rom-on-nexus-s-4g-how-to-tutorial/
That's the guide I was using, I got stuck on step 4.
Is the rom the .zip file I downloaded from the cyanogen site, or is it inside the folder?
The rom is the zip file. Boot into recovery and select choose zip from sd and navigate to it and install it.make sure to do a back up and wipe cache, dalvic and do a factory rest before flashing the rom

Can you explain this part more? Is this the part of the guide that says "make a nandroid backup"?
1. Mount USB and drag and drop cm7 zip & Google apps into root of SD card.
2. Turn off nexus.
3. Boot into fastboot by holding volume up and then power button.
4. In fastboot go to recovery (power button is used as enter button, volume buttons represent up and down)
5. In recovery go to backup and restore and back up your current rom.
6. Go back and then wipe data factory reset and also wipe cache.
7. Go to advanced -> Wipe delvik cache.
8. Go back and then go to install zip from SD, find cm7 flash it, then flash Google apps. You can flash kernel right now if you want.
Hope this clears anything up

I got to your step 5, but when I choose Recovery, after showing the Google logo it briefly shows a box and an arrow coming out of the box and an Android logo, then the box changes to a triangle with an exclamation mark. It stayed like that so I just rebooted the phone.

That means you don't have Clockwork recovery installed. You need to download the latest Clockwork recovery image and place it in the tools folder of your Android SDK Folder(wherever you placed it). Then press shift and right click on the tools folder and select "open command prompt here". Then boot your phone into bootloader by pressing volume up and power button at the same time. Connect your phone to your computer via usb cable and in the command prompt you opened type: fastboot flash recovery name of recovery image here.img and press enter and you will see in the command prompt window it will say sending image. When it is done scroll down to recovery on your phone using the volume buttons and press power to enter. Your phone will reboot into Clockwork recovery and from there you can continue on the previous posts steps. Hope this helps. You can download the latest Clockwork by going to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078213 and clicking on the brown "CWM Recovery" under 'How to: Root the Nexus S 4G'.
well I'm pretty sure I do have clockwork because there's a folder on my phone that is called clockworkmod, and I did root the phone successfully at the very least, but I'll try putting a new one there.

Alright here is a little run down on whats going on with your ns4g, you probably already flash clockworkmod on your nexus, but what samsung did was that it will try to revert back to the stock recovery. So what you have to do is flash Clockworkmod again to make it stick. Honestly it is good that it doesn't stick because then it would be easier to unroot the phone.
So now you have 2 different options on how to flash clockworkmod. 1) you can do it through fastboot but you have to have adb set up. I'm not sure what method you used to root your phone so i am just assuming.
2) you can download rom manager and flash clockwork through there. (Honestly i haven't done it through this method so i cant tell you of the pros or cons that are attributed with this).
NOTE: If you dont have super user yet it would be a prime time to flash it once you got CWM going.
For me, I only needed to flash clock work twice through fastboot in order to make it stick.
Good luck.
The guide I originally was using for this had me using rom manager, but it kept telling me I had to mount the SD card even though it was shown up in my computer.
If I were to flash clockwork again with adb setup, how would I do that? Sorry to be so asky, I just want this process to end correctly.
You have to set up adb if you don't have it already, go to ns4g development and go to vandam's thread that has all the list of rom's and rooting guides. Check out wolverines rooting guide, he goes indepth on how to set up adb. It make take awhile to set up but learning how to work in fastboot is essential in rooting the nexus.
Good luck

Well it was confusing and I almost asked for help again, but I finally got it flashed again and now cyanogen is working. I really appreciate the help and for pointing neon the right direction. As a final note, is there anything else I should know, like updating or something, just general knowledge (basically, "now what?")?

Did you get all the Google Apps installed too? That's the only "unusual" aspect of CyanogenMod.
Yep I got the Google apps.
Congrats dude its good you got it all working, BTW when ever you switch roms like from CM7 to miui you always have to wipe data, cache, and delvik cache. Delvik cache is in the advanced tab of CWM. If your just up updating from different versions of the same rom, you just need to wipe cache and delvik cache. That's about it, the hard part is done, enjoy flashing.

Actually if you are updating from different versions of the same rom, you don't need to wipe anything, you just flash it.

Cant boot phone just stays at "Google boot screen

i stupidly changed from CWM recovery to TWRP and forgot to make a backup.
I went to install the Revolt rom so copied it to the memory and it installs fine but when i go to reboot it just sits on the "Google" boot screen with the unlocked padlock at the bottom and never gets anywhere.
Any ideas or advice on what i can do?
Does adb work?
Wipe cache?
If you would have read through the thread, you would have seen that the ROM doesn't boot past the Google logo. The ROM doesn't work.

This happened to me 2 times yesterday. I was flashing new kernel and roms and then I keep getting the Google logo for every new rom I tried. I fixed this problem by doing these steps..
I'm using TWRP so ..
-Wipe
-Cache / Dalvik cache / factory reset / system / format data / and internal storage (Make sure u wipe internal storage and format data! This will stop the Google logo loop. NOTE: U will lost everything if you do this step)
-Then I reboot into TWRP after the wipe
-I download nexus 4 toolkit v1.3 Toolkit dl link
-mount /system/ in TWRP
-Put the below stock rooted rom into put_files_to_push_here (it's inside installed path of the nexus 4 toolkit)
-Push This stock rooted rom using #13 option in nexus 4 toolkit
-It will ask if u using a custom rom or insecure image type yes
-It will ask u where to push ur file to.. just type /system/
-wait 2-3 mins to push. If everything goes well it should say "Finished xxx secs"
-Install the Stock rooted rom using TWRP
-reboot

I think I was wrong. You can't push/flash a ROM through fastboot. Are you absolutely sure that you can't mount your SD card to your PC in TWRP recovery? I can't mount my SD using CWM but I can using TWRP.

Do u have adb driver installed on ur pc? If you do, it should show ur device near top left of toolkit. It should say " ADB mode List of devices attached" If you can see ur device with the serial number then everything should work fine.
You can install the driver using toolkit.. it's the #1 option
When pushing the file, u should be in TWRP (where u see install.. wipe etc..) and mount /system/ should have an X on it.

i always use this method to flash roms as it cuts the hassel of copying the rom into the device for flashing and its very easy actually......just Follow these Steps.. :fingers-crossed:
Download Wug' Nexus Toolkit
Install it and Boot your device into TWRP recovery
Now (assuming that you have Proper Nexus 7 drivers) Open the Toolkit and connect you device to the PC.
Now click the launch button under "Advanced Utilities"
On your device click advanced and the ADB Sideload.
Check mark Wipe Dalvik Cache and Wipe Cache and Swipe to start Sideload.
Now on your PC, click 'sideload update' under "ADB Sideload Update".
Click ok in the next pop-up and now Browse to the custom Rom that you want to flash.
The rom will be uploaded to your device temporarily for flashing and then it will be DELETED once it is Flashed.
This can take upto 30minutes depending on your computer's SPEED.
The rom will be flashed and the device will boot up.
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOUR DEVICE BREAKS, OVER HEATS, OR YOU SPILL COFFEE ON IT. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK..!!!
HIT THANKS IF I HELPED...

Cuts the hassel of copying the rom into the device... how hard is it to copy a zip file from your computers download folder to your device download folder? I found it to be much easier to have all my flashables on my device for reflashing with MultiRom without the need of my computer. The majority of the time just flashing the ROM will not be sufficient; flashing gapps and patches is also needed for it to work properly. And I think it would be extremely concerning if it took up to 30 minutes, even if the computer used was USB 1 with 3400 RPM IDE hard drive. It would not be possible to use a toolkit as his device is unrecognized by his computer, does not have the proper ADB interface driver needed to interact with the toolkit and does not have USB debugging enabled.

This wouldn't help at all considering that it looks like OP panicked and did a full internal wipe.
OP, if you have TWRP working I would suggest booting into TWRP, going to Advanced > ADB sideload and then find the ROM zip you were trying to install, then open up command prompt and use adb sideload <path-to-zip> (how exactly you go about doing this last step depends on where you get adb-- any of the previously linked toolkits should include an adb.exe file though that you can run).

[Q] Nexus 4 - choose update from SD card - no files found

This is really embarrassing.I desperately need help.
Earlier today i rooted my nexus 4 and everything seemed to be working just fine. I installed CWM 6.0.2.3.
Then i tried to flash my device with the latest ROM i.e. Kitkat
However i didn't copy the radio image in my device. And i panicked. However when i tried flashing the ROM, It showed status 7 error,
and i did a factory reset, dalvik cache wipe. When i tried starting my phone it didn't start.
Now finally, i can access my recovery mode HOWEVER when in bootloader, my PC does not recognize the device, But, it is recognized once in recovery. And the second problem is that when i try the
"Choose file from SD card"
i get error "No Files found"
So now i can't flash a new recovery. Neither can i flash another ROM because the choose file from SD card doesn't seem to be working
Please help me
Boot into boot loader; download and run the toolkit. Flash stock image. Sit back and let it do its thing. Remember, it will wipe everything on the phone.

[Q] Installing Cyanoid v11 on LG Optimus L3 E400

Hi. I attempted this installation this morning. I was able to install CWM Recovery using ROM Manager. I then installed the latest Build found in this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2459171. The installation proceeded as shown in the video, but when I reboot the phone after installation, I see the LG logo, and then the word ANDROID on the screen and nothing further. I assume you are coming from stock rom as you just installed CWM, so make sure you are using the STANDARD version, from the cyanoid page and follow this :
boot to recovery
go to mounts and storage
mount usb
this will allow you to move the correct version of the rom to the sd card, if it is not already,
when finished putting the rom on the sd card, unmount usb
now go back to the main menu
wipe data factory reset
wipe cache
go to advanced
wipe dalvik
go back
go to mounts and storage
format system
go back to main menu
install zip from sd card
choose zip from sd card
go to the rom you put on the card
select yes to continue
wait for finish
reboot
If it gets stuck again pull out the battery, wait a few seconds, put it back in, boot to recovery and do everything from install zip from sd card again and see what happens
let me know if it works or not or if your cwm recovery options vary from those i listed and i can help further

when finished putting the rom on the sd card, unmount usb
now go back to the main menu
wipe data factory reset
wipe cache
go to advanced
wipe dalvik
go back
go to mounts and storage
format system
go back to main menu
install zip from sd card
choose zip from sd card
go to the rom you put on the card
select yes to continue
wait for finish
reboot
If it gets stuck again pull out the battery, wait a few seconds, put it back in, boot to recovery and do everything from install zip from sd card again and see what happens
let me know if it works or not or if your cwm recovery options vary from those i listed and i can help further

Hi linuxxxx
Sorry, I can't post in the Cyanoid ROM thread, I don't have enough posts on this site, so it is not allowed. I was able to get this to work though following bluerichblue's advice above. There is one remaining issue. I cannot enter any APN settings. When I enter those, and select the save option, nothing is saved and the system returns to a blank APN list screen. You previously suggested that this may be a problem with the SIM? However, I have used different SIMs with the same result. Also, while my LG Optimus L3 was running on the Stock Rom, this function worked and I was able to setup APNs. Can you help?
