[Q] Confused about internal storage - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so hopefully somebody can set me straight here. My M comes with 8gb of internal storage. But I have run into app space issues and have read that only 4gb is accessible. If I'm correct that's disappointing. However it feels like less than 4gb is accessible to me. I deleted a couple more apps today, but here is my current storage usage (screenshot). I'm rooted on JB and have Titanium Backup so maybe that will allow me to transfer apps from internal storage to sd card. I have not yet tried it on the M and from the couple of posts I've read it may or may not be possible. I do not have a developer edition M. Which is what I read that you need. Is this the case? All my pics, vids, and music are already on the 32gb sd card. It's just apps taking up space on internal. What are my options for continually running out of storage so quickly?
Sent from my XT907 using xda app-developers app

Example: The screenshot says I have 550mb available... Which isn't much at all... But I'm trying to install a 43.5mb app right now and I'm getting an internal storage warning. So my problem is two parts. 1, can't use the full 8gb and 2, can't even use what little space it says I have.

Do you have safe strap installed with an active slot? If so, use your root browser and delete the ss folder and in sdcard0, the safestrap folder which contains the ROM slot information. That should put you back around where you should be. Don't touch the TWRP folders and you will be fine to continue using safe strap.

I did install safestrap last week intending on loading a custom ROM, but ended up not feeling like I was experienced enough to do so at this time so I deleted the app. Would deleting the app have been enough to solve that issue?

You can also use directory bind to bind the data to the sdcard1 path. Works like a charm.

Not exactly sure what you mean. Is directory bind an app? Would this be necessary if I have already deleted safestrap for the time being?

if it has 8gig why does it only let you use half of it..and what's the purpose of the other 4gig left... because as far as I know when you install apps it takes up the space of the 4gig that you you.

Directory bind can get you in some trouble if you are not careful. Delete one side on accident, you delete the other's content as well. Directory bind just links two locations and basically acts like a forwarding service.
Back to Safestrap. Yes, Safestrap partitions your usable memory for the other operating system file. Its just like dual booting a computer, you don't have shared memory between the two. (As far as internal memory is concerned.)
Did you delete the folders? It should fix your issue. Check your storage stats in stock settings afterwards to confirm.

Deleting the app alone will not get rid of the partition, in my experience. Reboot your phone to see if its gone too. The folders are /ss and /storage/sdcard0/Safestrap. You could also delete the TWRP folders if they are present, since you do not need Safestrap any longer.
Let me know if this solves your issue.

I don't seem to have either of those folders when I tried to search for them with root explorer. So maybe I didn't do anything when I opened up safestrap when I had it.
And to clarify, sdcard0 is internal storage and sdcard1 is the actual sd card correct?

Yes sir. That is correct. Did you make a slot when you opened safe strap? Normally that eats up memory like crazy.

I probably downloaded it then left it alone while I researched a bit and never ended up doing anything. I'll move some stuff over from sdcard0 if I have any pics or music still on there to free up a little space or maybe try one of those complex work arounds to free up some of that extra 4gb eventually.

[Q] Apps2SD?

Is there anyway to move apps to SD? I know they took out the feature in ICS, but maybe via an app or something? 8GB is pretty small when you take away a gig for a rom slot...

better yet, has anyone figured out if you can flip flop the internal and external sd locations so the phone thinks your external sd card is the primary? I know this was possible on the X2 and the RAZR's.
I have the memory switch .zip file, but no way to install it on my rooted Droid RAZR M
I was curious how difficult would out be to just rename the internal storage from sd card to internal storage? If that is possible then we could just rename external to sd card then we should be able to move apps to the card easily.

Tried an app from the market and it seems working: GL to SD. need root access

nah. tried renaming them last week or so and it not only didnt work, the damn things renamed themselves upon reboot. im pretty pissedf about the memory on this phone cuz the phone itself is pretty snappy.
Dang I guess Motorola has this phone on lock down. I used my EVO 4g to copy songs over to my SD card and once I inserted it back in and tried to mount it, it kept saying blank, so I rebooted my phone and it showed up. If I wasn't as smart as I am I would have probably formatted the damn thing lmao I was wondering if they did that as a minor precaution to people trying to hack the phone with something on the SD card, but then again I'm sure if they did a reboot wouldn't have made it show up then.

So were you able to move anything other than game data to your ext sd? It let me move dropbox, but nothing else showed up on its list of transferable files.

System restrictions delete failed

When I wanted to delete something from my nook color running cm10 night lies I could not delete it and a notification pop out saying system restriction delete failed but when my nook color is running cm7.2 i had no problem deleting files can anybody explain to me for this observation? Thank you for reading and hope you have a nice day!

If the file is on SD... you may have ran into the occasional SD becoming read only under CM10 that periodically rears its ugly head.
So does it mean that there is no solution? Thanks anyway.

It means you may have to use a different SD. CM10 is real finicky about SD cards.

I have used sdcard no. 1 to install cm 10 but I use sdcard no. 2 to download additional files and apps and use it as the device's main sdcard meaning I use it. I tried a different sd card also but still can't delete files and using cm10, I realized that there are some hidden files with unknown symbols I don't know what are those I saw them when I use androzip but on other file manager I don't see them and I can't delete them BTW should I use cm7.2 or cm 10.

Those unknown symbol files mean that CM10 is sometimes corrupting some files when it writes. That is why it is mounting the SD as read only. It sees that corruption. Try creating a file with your CM10 file manager. If you cannot, it means it is mounted read only.
Try getting the free SDFormatter program and running that on your PC to reformat the no. 2 SD to fix any corruption.

You have a bad SD card. Stick with Sandisk as they are more reliable.

problems with M

Just got the M, and I'm trying to figure out some concerns (mostly surrounding storage issues):
- curious to see if there is a way to transfer apps from the phone's storage to the memory card
- how do I get Google Play Music to downloand my music to my sdcard?
- how do I get the gallery app to sync with my photos on picasa?
- I noticed there are quite a few of the "usbdisk_1.x" on my /storage folder - what are those, and can I delete them?
I do have root with safestrap, but no custom ROM yet.
any help would be most appreciated, thanks!
Directory Bind is an app that will move app data to the SD card. It works well for me, it was a pain to set up though.

the only way I know of how to do this is to use directory bind. And for that you will need root.

Did you look at the first result from that search? It told you how to do it unless they didn't work? I've never tried it but it seemed relatively universal.

I am not rooted and therefor have never used directory bind, but here is a tutorial on what to do:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410262
Good luck!
If you have root explorer you can link a folder name it "files" on your SD card and link it to location data/data/com.Google.android.music there should already be a "files" folder there. Once linked any file downloaded by play music will go to the linked folder on the SD card.

App2SD and Safe strap problems.

I've tried getting my apps to move to the SD card with no luck. I used the multi tool on my computer to partition the card, tried multiple app2sd apps and I keep getting (phone does not support) failures.
I'm fully rooted but can't unlock. 98.16.3
I also can't get safe strap to flash a ROM in slot 1. I've fallowed the instructions on xda for both as and app2sd but I'm getting no ware.
What I'm trying to do is have SS on internal memory and apps on external. Any help would be awesome.

Search xda for "link2sd". A while back I ran into the same issue. Im not in a position to find and forward you the link myself (sorry) , but you should find it. Try a Google search first and it should find the xda post fire you. You will need to partition your sd card with "mini tool partition wizard". Again the post will explain all the steps required. Oh,... And I can't remember the screen name of the original poster, be it isn't me. So all credit to that member not me. I did it and it works like a charm on my Verizon Motorola DROID RAZR M xt907. I have a class 10, 64gb external sd card that I created an 8gb partition for linking apps. Good luck
Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk
Tks, I did use the mini tool. Sorry, used the wrong name. I got to the point ware it tells me that the app needs to be linked but I don't know how. Is that in the thread you suggested? ( looking for it now)
Again tks all
Sent from my XT907 using xda app-developers app
OK, found multiple threads and I think I found the problem for app2sd. The tutorial I used before said to make partition fat32 and it should be ext2. I'll give that a try.
Sent from my XT907 using xda app-developers app
I made my 2nd partition ext4. And it works fine on our phone. One you finish partitioning your sd card look for "Link2sd" on Google play store. It's free and I know it works for our phone. Couldn't tell you anything about apps2sd. Sorry. Now the first time you use link2sd it will ask you what file type is the partition. Select the file type you created then it will ask for a reboot. Then you should be able to start linking app data to the partition thus freeing up internal memory. It might not show right away but it should eventually. At one point I had like 300 to 400 apps on my phone. lol
Oh, don't use the "move to sd card" button with in link2sd, only the link option. Good luck.

Thanks all. As soon as I get home, I'll give it another try.

moving files to external sd card, plz help

ok so I recently updated my Samsung galaxy s4 i337 to 4.4.2 NC1 and rooted it.. although I'm having a problem installing a ROM on it..
every time I go to CWM recovery I cannot install an update from internal memory, which is where my phone automatically puts downloaded files in. I've looked all over for a way to moves files from internal memory to external sd card but I haven't been able to find a method that works so I finally decided to make an account on xda and ask.. so weather there is a way to move the .zip files (the rom and gapps) to my external sd card, or another method to installing custom ROMs, please help :/
Look at root explorer.
