It's technical possible, but take a look at the positions of the microphones. They are not right placed for voice calling like a real phone, it wouldn't be a great experience to use it. And btw isn't it too big to call someone?

Maybe he wants to call add he uses it but with a headset. Don't have to put it up against your ear.. Looks funny though. my girl and I called each other with gtalk and she had it on her ear

Can't use a headset with the Nexus 7. No microphone input.

Not likely anytime soon. 4.2.2 is expected to be just a bugfix.

Send text to nexus 7

I've seen a lot of apps that will send your phone text to a tablet but it seems like none are compatible yet anyone know of any that are yet ?

Tablet talk works great.

I use "What's App." Works great across different platforms (and especially for international texts - no fees!). It's like an instant messaging service, but it piggybacks your cell network if you're tethering.
EDIT: sorry, I forgot to mention that it only works if the other person has What's App, too.
I use Google voice, only thing that you don't get are the picture msgs.

Try HeyWire Link ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/...GwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5tZWRpYWZyaWVuZHMuY2hpbWUiXQ.. ) in google play it is free and it works. Takes a few min's to setup and a little thinking because of the way the help files are, well there english is not to good lets put it that way. But it works very well. Hope that helps
Yes, I also use the fantastic product: 'Tablet Talk'
Rob has sent this from his Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I just use Google Voice which is linked to my Sprint account. Only downside is that you can't receive MMS.
+1 for tablet talk, it works great I just hope for more theme/customizing options in the future.

Whoah, great thread. Thanks for sharing guys. Think I'll try Tablet Talk on my Nexus 7!

Yes. Tablet talk syncs to your phone via WiFi or Bluetooth..so technically its using your cell service as an "extension" to your cell phone. I love it.

Google Voice, however like someone mentioned they haven't incorporated MMS into it yet.
Will try Tablet Talk tho.
I've used Tablet Talk for a couple weeks now and it hasn't really worked for me. I'm thinking that it's probably because of my phone. Does anyone else have a Galaxy S II/N7 pairing that works?

Be a bit more specific For example..are you using a 3rd party SMS program such as GoSms or Handicent? If so..read the FAQ for tablet talk.
Whats the issue that you're having?
Seriously amazed by tablet talk, my galaxy s3,suffered the sudden death syndrome, so was in a fickle, bought a cheap Huawei blaze and it's tethered to my phone and having to use tablet talk for texts and calls is amazing. Those using tablet talk for Blue tooth calling how clear is it.

If I'm not mistaken, In tablet talk you have to be connected by blue tooth or on the SAME wifi. An app called CLOUD SMS doesn't require that you be on the same wifi, I can receive text on my n7 even if I'm connected to wifi and my phone is not.

Using phone after using N7

Is anyone else finding it weird using there phone after using the N7. I'm finding it hard to type on my Xperia Arc S? I wish there was some way to use my N7 like a phone while using WiFi, but with no Google Voice here in the UK I'm pretty much limited to only using my phone. I know I could use Skype. In fact I might have to see how much it costs to get enough Skype out credit to last a month and give it a try.

Yep...I have little use for my GS3 other than texts, phone calls, or bathroom breaks at work. If it wouldn't look so weird I'd take the N7 to the restroom at work too!!

I only use my phone for texting, phone calls, apps that are not available on the N7 and internet when I'm out & in an emergency the WiFi hotspot feature. If Google Voice was available in the UK I'd hardly ever use my phone now.

Possibility of an app that allows the WiFi only N7 to send & receive SMS & MMS
There are apps that allow the sending and receiving of SMS & MMS from a computer via your phone would it be possible for such an app to be created to do the same but using the N7 instead of using a computer?

Thanks, didn't know any apps were available that did that. I've gone for TabletTalk because it has call features as well.
Does the sound from the TabletTalk app get routed through the N7 or direct from the teathered phone, e.g have a wired headset plugged into phone and use N7 as the dialer using TabletTalk?

No worries, to be fair never actually taken the plunge and used either of them.
Just knew they existed !
And probably better to go for TabletTalk as its developed by an XDA member !
Have fun and glad I helped

You can do that yes. As far as I am aware the only limitation tablet talk has is that incoming audio cannot be fed through the tablet (limitation in android itself)
You can still use the mic to chat but you either need to have a headset connected to your phone (wired/bt) or you can activate your phones speakerphone through tablet talk.

Tablet Talk works great, Real shame can't use the built in mic/speaker, would use it for calls in that case.
textab lite also works well. Ive been using that today, kinda testing it out. Havent had any issues at all.

I like Google Voice as well for basic texting over wifi. But, you can't do mms or use the short codes in place of phone numbers.

That's Ok as I tend to take my Sony Live Key out with me for Google Music and just in case I need to make and receive a phone call, but texting seems a pain on the 4.2" screen of my Sony Xperia Arc S compared to the larger screen of the N7.
The Dev has done a good visual job with Tablet Talk as the Dialer and Messaging look like the ICS/JB Stock ones and the quick reply popup is so convenient.

I'd love to see Google Voice come to the UK as I'd use it instead of my phone in the house then use it to reply to any replies that I get when I'm out of WiFi coverage and only have 3G coverage.

Does the N7 support hands free headsets for the likes of using Google Voice or is it only headphones and the Ok device mics for that?

I use grooveip for calls. Of course, you have to have a data connection. The n7 wifi cannot make cellular calls, it does not have the hardware. The n7 3g cannot make cell calls yet either, but dev work is progressing.

Wouldn't hurt to try. I'll try connecting to my 2013 Jetta tonight. What is it you're trying to tether? Audio, I suspect...
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Cars usually only connect to Phones via bluetooth because phones have different bluetooth profiles than tablets since phones have changes in their framework to allow phone calls.
most cars connect to the phone so you can use the phone hands free. tablets dont have hands free bluetooth profiles thus is probably why your Mercedes isn't linking properly as the tablet doesn't support syncing phone books and phone calls.
Someone else may have paired theirs with their Dodge ram but they most likely paired it for Audio to their audio system but not their navigation/phone system.
I got the same problem next time will buy a BMW.
I had issues connecting an android 4.2.1 device to an AUDI A6. gave up after a few days, even took it to the dealership and they couldn't figure it out.
for some odd ball reason, android bluetooth just doesn't work right. I tried all my apple devices (ipad and ipod touch 4g) and it connected instamagically to the car.
Let me know how it goes for you and I will try the later rom
