Hello all,
I just got my Nexus 2 days ago, and I think that there is something weird about my battery.
First day, with little/moderate use the charge didnt last a day (thats ok, i guess).
But i put it to charge last night, and this morning a found it only at 37%, and when i looked at the battery page, I found this:

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",

}
As you can tell from the screenshot, it was charging for a bit, but then some time later, it stopped charging, and was decharging, while charger was plugged in! Why was that?
And also, as soon as i started using the phone again, that 37% was gone in ~1 hour.
Any ideas what is happening to my phone?
Is it my battery and I need to send the phone for a replacement? (Really dont want to, because I already waited for 2 months... but if it is defected than I will have no choise)
Thanks

I think it wouldnt say it was charging, if there was no power in the house, would it?
And just to be clear, i had power when i woke up, so it would show 30mins of charging - but its still going down.
So there was definitely something wrong with the charging process....
Are you charging via USB (PC) or AC (wall)?

Also, when i got my phone, it was really cold, and i know that cold can be bad for battery. But could it cause permanent damage for it? thats the onyl reason i can think my battery isnt performing well... apart from defect
Once the battery is fully charged, a couple hours at most, it discharges and then won't start charging again till it drops below 90%. Could be the reason for your charging spikes. As far as battery life goes your is pretty typical. I constantly charge my phone, it sits on a wireless charger, but if I try and go all day with a single charge I can barely make it through the day and with heavy use that's more like half a day.

I would be ok, if it stopped charging when it reached 100%, but i didnt even reach 50%....
Anyway, will test for a few days, and if it still gives me problems will probably need to contact Google..
P.S. my girlfriend got N4 as well, so will compare with hers, if i feel im getting very short battery life.

Check to see what is actually using the battery in the stats. Could be a rouge app keeping the phone awake and draining the battery. GSam Battery Monitor gives the best stats but the stock one should give you a clue to what if anything could be draining it.
The same thing happened to my Nexus 4 when I initially got it. I left it to charge overnight and when I awoke it was far below 100%.
I flashed Franco kernel as soon as it was released though, and never got the problem again.

It'll get better. I'm on custom rom and kernel, and today, web browsing on wifi, I have used 21% in 1 hour and 15 minutes, and the phone has been unplugged just over 3 hours.
If the stock ROM doesn't improve significantly over the next few weeks i'd be surprised.
From 40% to 0% in 1 second
This just happened to my Nexus 4 (screenshot)
There was 40% left and all of a sudden the device turned itself off. After restart the battery was completely empty?!?

You have a Nexus get your phone unlocked and install TWRP recovery (easiest method is Nexus 4 toolkit), download and install Harsh kernel, I guarantee you won't be disappointed with its performance or battery life

With all due respect this isn't a kernel/ROM issue, otherwise every single person would be reporting of the battery suddenly depleting in the same way.
Installing another ROM isn't a fix for this sort of problem and just complicates things for the user.
To the OP:
We have two likely issues:
1) Faulty charger
2) Faulty phone.
First off try a different charger, if you don't have one, use your computer's USB port, although note that some computers do not charge while they are off, and the Nexus has a bug where it stops charging if the computer goes to sleep, even though it says it is still charging (it will start charging if you unplug and plug it back into the USB port while the computer is asleep).
Once your phone has charged to 100% from a different charger, if all is fine now it points to a faulty charger, if you still get the same issue, rule out any software you might have installed by doing a factory reset, and try again. If it still happens you simply have a faulty phone and will need to return it.

Phil

Many of you have read byrong's article on actual battery charge.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=871051
He discusses the creep down from 100% to 90% overnight; as well as bump charging.
I am offering a solution that will give you 100% (or over 100% if you so choose) every night without any effort after initial setup.
Lets first look at the charger:
Output:
5v
1000 mAh
So every hour, your charger could potentially flow 1000 mA into your battery, right? There's actually two contingencies:
How much can the battery pull, and the roll-off at the peak of the charge.

According to byrong's data, the last 10% charge rate rolls from 650 to 100mah in 45 minutes almost linearly. Prior to this roll-off, we are seeing 650 mAh pull from the battery which appears to be linear.
Ok now we can do our time calculation:
mAh of your battery: A = (1300 for stock)
Charge Rate: CR = (650)
10% roll-off: -(650-100)/(45/60) = -733 mAh/h (approx) Feel free to do the integral .1A/∫(650-733t)dt. Im just going to call it a flat +45 mins.
(A-A*.1)/CR + (45/60) = charge time in hours.
For stock, this is:
(1300 - (.1*1300))/650 + (45/60) = T (h)
T(h) = 2.55 hours. FROM ZERO CHARGE
I normally run down to about 30%. In that case... 1300*.3 = 390 -1300 = 910 mAh to charge
Run the calc again:
(910 - (.1*910))/650 + (45/60) = T (h)
T(h) (30%) = 2.01 Hours
Now what do we do with this?
Say hello to the appliance timer (you can get them at the dollar store):
http://www.amazon.com/50460-24-hour-Multi-Event-Appliance-Timer/dp/B000G1MD80
100% Charge Procedure:
Set ON 2 hours before you normally wake up.
Set OFF sometime prior to when you go to sleep.
You get:
100% charge every morning
If you oversleep, worst case scenario you end up with 90%.
BUMP Charge Procedure:
Set ON 3-4 hours before you normally wake up.
Set OFF 2 hours after that.
Set ON immediately after OFF,
Set OFF .5 hours after,
etc... until you've bumped to your desired level.
From now on just plug your phone in when you go to bed, and wake up to a 10% fresher battery every morning!
If you normally deplete your battery to a point where it will not make it until 2 hours before you wake up, consider setting your first OFF to 30 mins after you normally go to sleep.
ENJOY.
(+ Thnx if it helped you plz!)
After testing different batteries I have sort of a mini stockpile going on, so I'll be using this to bump charge my phone. Before it was just too much of a hassile to bump charge but this makes it easy
awesome, how many bumps do you normally do?

I thought that bump charging was bad for the battery. Is the slight increase in initial charge worth degrading the life of the battery? Any insight on how bad this actually is for the batter?

Bump charging while the phone is fully turned on has almost no affect because it doesn't truly bump charge- you're just keeping it at 100% instead of having your phone drain it down to ~90% and keeping it there. If you want to go over 100% you have to turn off Android (phone) and purely charge the battery, then if you unplug and do it again that's real bump charging.
If done regularly (with phone turned off) it can and will damage your battery degrading the overall lifespan. The benefit is you can end up with 105-115% normal battery capacity where when you turn on your phone, it will stay at 100% for hours.
But yea when I said bump charging before I meant with the phone on :s

Love the linked article and this walk through. My questions are do these timers(or the one you linked on Amazon) allow for multiple settings (like 4 different on/off times) or just one time for on and one time for off?
And I'm assuming the initial method is with your phone left on, bump charge with phone turned off? Since you are definitely the expert, which method do you prefer and why?

Almost all timers you can set an on/off time for half-hour increments- the digital ones you can probably be more specific.
Mine I set off/on 3 times right before I wake up.
Bump charging with your phone on will just keep your battery at 100%, since android by default keeps it around 90% if plugged in constantly (keeping a battery fully charged for extended periods of time is potentially damaging/ also reports of cheap batteries that are overcharged or on the charger too long exploding)
Bump charging with your phone off will overcharge your battery, this will cause some battery cells to die and lessen the amount of charge your battery can hold the next time you charge it. If you continue to do this then after 2-4+ months of bump charging, you may end up with a battery that will only bump charge as much as a normal charge used to be. This would be where you either buy a new battery or live with that fact.
+1
Byrong calls bumpchargers 'power users' that will 'buy new batteries every few months.' So it really doesnt matter that your trashing your battery if you perceive the temporary life gain to outweigh the loss of longevity.
Most timers have "multiple events." You just set them using little plastic pins so it really doesn't cost them anything to give you a bunch of pins.
I personally leave my phone on, as it is my 2nd alarm clock. I have my inital off set to 2am (about 30 mins after my usual sleep time) to bring the battery up to the optimal 40% charge it should sit at. My on is set to 6am, 2 hours before i normally wake up. I do not bump, as i am not baller' $$$$$.

i thought if you charge you phone when its "off" you dont need to bump charge. I always charge mine at night and i will turn it on in the morning after boot i get 99% 2 min later after everything is done loading it still at 99% and i can get a whole day out of it. (stock battery) or if i run pandora for 11 hours (work 8 hours and commute 1.5 hours each way.) i will end up with 13%

Well ya, charging your phone regularly with it off will get you 100%, but people like bump charging because you can overcharge the battery to 105-120%
Unless.. what you're saying is I don't need to 'bump charge' with my phone on when I can just normal charge with it off? And to that I say neh! I use mine as my main alarm clock and would like to be woken up if someone calls or texts me (most of the time anyway..)
For some or maybe even most people turning off your phone and charging might be the better choice.
I believe that even charging your phone with it off, will still allow it to creep down to 90% though yea? Those protect circuits are physically part of the battery.

Hello All,
I'm in need of advice if this is down to battery calibration or I have a faulty battery.
I got a replacement Nexus 4 3 days ago and I have been using it as normal. But I have noticed something strange going on with it.
I charged my phone to 100% and put my phone into airplane mode overnight, as I did with my Galaxy Nexus (It saves battery and I have a house phone for emergencies if somebody wants to contact me). I wake up the next morning around 9 hours later, I lose 1% battery which is normal, but when I use the phone for, say, 20 seconds, the battery instantly drains down to 95%. When I turn the screen off, and leave it until I get into work. I get into work 30 minutes later, turn the screen on and use it for a further 40-50 seconds, the battery then goes down to 92%, and the same thing goes throughout the day. I'm currently at 77% which only 12mins screen on time.
Would this be down to calibration? I haven't actually calibrated the battery and I rooted and flashed a custom ROM on the first day.
I had similar issue on my old, broken Nexus 4 so its not a coincidence.
Any help is appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's common with new phones (and new ROMs mind you) for the battery life reading to be a bit weird. Ultimately you'll still get the same battery life as normal, it's just the reading that will take a little time to become accurate as it calibrates itself.
Try Batterycalibration:

When I first got an extended battery for my old Xperia X10 I would often see the battery life *apparently* going up after going down, without actually charging.

Thanks for this. I'll check it out.
Reminds me about HTC Sensation. It behaved so strangely with the battery readings. Jumped many percentages at once, or stayed at 100% for a while. Also after rebooting, the reading might have been quite different each reboot.
I truly, deeply, did NOT like it. It was horrible to keep track of the real juice level the battery had.
So I wonder if anyone else is seeing this behavior?

I just thought its normal, for the first couple cycles, and since I flash a rom quite often was hard to pinpoint any of my battery drain problems, eventually though I found that my battery drain issues, were from the CPU not switching back to the 384mhz slot properly, set my min cpu speed with voltage control and now my drain issues are fixed, and I dont have those haywire readings.

Calibrating the battery with that app does nothing. The reason you see the battery graph go up without charging after usage is because the graph is more of an "estimate". If you are using it extremely heavily for a long period of time it will give an "estimate" of where it is and then when you stop using it, it will realize it is no longer under load and appear to "recharge".

How many hours do you end up getting out of it before it dies? And what settings do you get out of that?
I don't pay attention to my battery every few minutes, but look at what I get out of a whole day. Depending on usage, I get 2% to 8% drain per hour. On average, it's closer to 6%. Hope that helps.

How do you get it down to 1%? Mine always shuts off when it's about 3% and doesn't let me keep it on.
Just power it back on after shutdown. I get quite about more juice out of it.
BTW, noticed that it uses far less power over the weekend, when at home and constantly on WiFi. I have a feeling the signal amplifier is not very efficient.

I would say these things happen, atleast to me also. Best bet is to look at longer time intervals and average the battery usage. Install Better Battery Stats and it can help give you a general idea of what is causing battery drain.
I've had the phone go 10 hours in overnight and not budge from 100% and show a similar drop to what you''ve had on light use after.

I had this exact problem and RMA'd. It may be an issue of power cycling the battery so many times but I didn't want to take the chance. My new phone has a strong battery that lasts 5 hours on average.

So do you want to replace it ? To be honest, the battery is the only issue i found about this phone . I mean for a phone that has 2100mAh battery and 28nm CPU, the battery performance is only a little bit better than my i9000, that's disappointing...

Lol you are some kind of self centered to think someone follows you around. You just happen to post useless information in almost every. Single. Q/A thread.

Its probably because you turned on wifi at that point, while you were browsing the phone is also checking for updates in the background
I've definitely had this problem.
I was getting really good battery life. I've had GSam battery monitor installed since opening and my average is showing at 21h 18m. Yet in the past 2 or 3 days the battery life has fallen off a cliff. I've had about 7.5hrs use so far today, with well under an hour of screen on time, and yet am at 30%.
The big change is battery drain in inactive states. I used to be able to leave it unplugged overnight and the GSam graph would basically be flat. I might lose 1 or 2 per cent. The other night I lost 40%.
The main differences in the GSam app usage section is that the Kernal (Android OS) is now sky high (13.2% for today). I'd hardly registered that as anywhere near a top used before. Chrome seems to be eating up background battery too now, whereas it never used to.
The only change in usage is that I bought a Maxell Qi charging pad, and have used it once or twice. I have to admit, I'm a little concerned. For now, I'm currently on stock everything.
I have same problem whit my Nexus 4.
I charged it today from 15% to Full and then unplugged it and gone to caffe bar whit my friend for a 3 hours and then went home.
That means my Nexus 4 was full time on sleep mode, but when i checked battery % its was on 97% thats pretty much for standby isnt it??
Mediaserver was on top whit 85% and Sleep mode was second whit 10%.
But i think i found solution for this battery drainage.
1.If you have battery drain issue turn off you Nexus 4.
2.Let it be off for an 1 or 2 hours.
3.Turn it on.
4.There should be no Mediaserver battery drain.
NOTE:If you turn you device off again for 1 or 2 hours problem will come back.
For now problem is somehow solved for me whit this Turning off for several hours.
Please report if there is success!!
Actually dropping tot 97% in 3 hours of standby does not sound like a problem. Also depends a lot on the signal quality during standby.
Dropping from 100% to 98-97% goes very quick on my phone. That's a matter of calibration of the battery meter. After that little drop it works like I expect it would.
Remember that the percentage is just an interpretation of battery voltage expressed in percentages. It's an estimation instead of an exact figure.
My nexus was dying after 3-4hrs of standby....with no use and data/WiFi off.
Also seemed like the phone took forever to charge. It got to a point that I turned it off to ensure I would be able to make 1 or 2 short calls during the day
It also stayed burning hot.
RMAd it and new phone has No issues.
Easily gets through day and night with very heavy use. I still haven't updated to 4.2.1.

I'm confused. What's your issue? If I had 16 hours use with only an 8% drop in battery I would be ecstatic. I'd have about 75% use during that time ... on a good day. On a bad day, it would have died after 12 hours.

I left phone home not useing it at all and its full time sleep mode
My battery is acting weird lately as well. It actually went up charged to 98% to charged in the span of one hour
what the heck?
Mine fell like that when I went out in the cold. 30% in one minute. Then I stayed on 3% for 45 minute till I found a charger. Hmmmmm

I think our 2012 nexus 7 standby time is pretty bad..but i think it's the most case for many android devices. However, as we know the new nexus 7 2013 has smaller battery, but it's standby time is SIGNIFICANTLY longer. I heard over night, only about 2 percent drops, similar to iPhones iPads and even playbook when I had it. My 2012 nexus 7 drops 2 percent per hour, not per overnight.
What I'm wondering is that is this due to the snapdragon processor being more power efficient when idle? My nexus 4's standby time is incredible as well, but don't know if it's because of 4.3 update or not. I used to have Galaxy S2, which had a snapdragon S3 (the one before krait), and standby time on that was also horrible. Never got though a day, battery was always out at 3pm..
I do have some apps on my nexus 7, but I don't have too many either. I' not really an "app" guy. I have also tried Greenify, but it's pointless because I DO want to get some notifications from Email, Weather, etc. I don't have everything syncing that often.
I believe 2 percent per hour isn't really bad, and I don't think there is something wrong with my tab. But I really would love super long standby like the new nexus 7 2013. Will certain ROM in the developer section help? I believe I have Vanir 4.3 or something installed, and haven't changed for a while.
Also the nexus 7 2013 and nexus 4 with 4.3's super long standby is with WiFi ON. I'm wondering if they are due to SD s4 pro chip being well optimized with android 4.3 for battery efficiency or something.
Please reply!
Thanks.
Download an app named BetterBatteryStats. Start it and let it run for a whole battery cycle (charge it, unplug and then do what you usually do with your Nexus). Then you gotta check your Kernel WakeLocks (they are eating your battery when your screen is off). When you find out which ones are the problem you should post it here, on the forum and hopefully somebody will help you .
Basically saying: when you enter Android settings and here you check your batterry stats you want to have your awake bar fully covered by screen on bar (like this: http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/8633/131d.png).
Also disable 3g and wifi over night or find an app that will do it for you.
Here's a handy guide to improving battery life:

Yeah....you have something draining your battery. I get like 2 percent drop over night on the original N7.
Read the like in my signature. Its in an S2 forum....but pretty much is the same for any device.
I can get 4 days on standby....barely touching it of course. 2 solid days on average with normal use.

Above are the screenshots. I'm using gsam. Better battery stats app is a paid app, so I chose this.
Do you think, from the screen shot above, that Google services is draining my battery? I'm not sure if this is only from me unplugged this tab for about an hour, or for the entire 2 days me plugging and unplugging time to time.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Also to Sheo above, awake and screen on are definitely different . Does that mean my battery is draining?
Thanks. And I guess it wasn't 2 days. 1 day and 5 hours I guess, instead of 2 days I said in my previous post.
Every time you unplug your phone, gsam resets. So those stats will be off. Charge it fully, and let it go til its near dead. Like 10 percent. Then check out gsam. Cpuspy would be a good thing to get to....to see if its deep sleeping and for how long. Just reboot when fully charged, or after unplugging go into cpuspy and reset stats. So it will track your full drain.
Hit the drop down on the app screen in gsam. Check kernel wakelocks....times waking device and time held awake. I am not sure its Google. It only held your phone awake for 2 minutes.

Okay it's been several hours now after I unplugged and left it idle. I'm not really sure about the gsam results, so here are the screenshots.
Thanks for helping me.

Thanks.

Hey guys I have no idea what happened to my tablet, but since yesterday, my tablet standby time is really good. Today, I unplugged 4 hours before, and right more, it still says 100% . Does gsam also save battery? When I had my honeycomb tablet back in the day, it was dropping only 2 percent per overnight and I haven't seen this on any of my other tabs after. But it's amazing to have this long standby time again. I was thinking short standby time was just one of the things that android was not good with. Now I'm happy thanks guys for your help!
I'm having an serious issue as my op5 got completely drained and no longer taking charge. It's stuck at 50% and wouldn't charge more or drain less. I have to use it plugging through the charger. If i unplug the charger phone gets turned off.
And its showing "Battery temperature is too low" while off. Though i tried to warm it up even though it isn't taking charge.
I think the problem is with the battery. So anyone replaced their battery yet? Where did you buy them? If you are using third party batteries how are they holding up?
Thank you.

This is some more information for you https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/help/device-temperature-low-charge-oneplus-5-t3885267
my battery hold the power very well, but I did not use the dashcharge, nor charge it when not needed.
Time, number of charge, heat will decrease lithium based battery life very fast. Its chemical.
Also keeping it at 100% all the time (overnight charge) will accelerate oxidation (voltage proportional).
The best way to get good battery life over time, is to understand how it works. https://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries
When mine will get around 4h sot, I'll consider PolarCell, from my researches, it seems the only company who do legit OnePLus battery.
http://www.polarcell.de/english.html

I replaced mine with an OEM one from eBay about 6 months ago. Old one was working okay but was down to 83% health according to accubattery. I replaced it at the same time as my charging port which would no longer fast charge or file transfer.
The replacement went well other than one antenna cable I couldn't get snapped on, turns out to be for the second sim card slot so now I'm back to carrying a work phone through the day plus my phone until I can take it apart again and make another attempt.
The new battery was actually a month older than my original battery according to the date code. It only had 93% battery health when I first installed it. Down to 92% now.

I'm questioning how this % 's working...
My phone did a 8 sot, and is said 85% battery health.
Wife's OP3 (same kernel, Franco), got a cheap ebay battery, she got 2-3h SOT, phone shutdown @20% battery, and the app said 1700 mhA , and 81% health...
Both SOT were made by watching youtube video at home, vanced youtube apk.
I can't really say whether it was accurate or not. My battery life seemed like it stayed consistently good over the year and a half, I assumed maybe the updates actually helped battery life offsetting the degradation of the battery. I wouldn't have changed it yet if I didn't have to take it apart and do the charging port anyway.
I've never had a battery life problem with the phone with the original or replacement battery. My routine varies by way too much to be able to compare screen on time from one charge to the next. If I read a lot on Google Play books with black mode I could probably get over 12 hour screen on time. YouTube videos likely 8 hours. Normal mixed use anywhere between 4 hours to 7 hours screen on time. I never have to worry about it lasting a day. I'm at lunch break and I'm at 92%. The first 10% usually seems to go fastest too.

its a op app. My % numbers come from this app.
Its not working like I said. Dead battery from ebay and it was @ 81%
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/themes/app-oneplus-diagnostic-t3876426
I get 93% with the OnePlus app, 92 last time I checked with accubattery (91 the previous time). I have since uninstalled accubattery as I only use it occasionally to check battery health.
Update: My mechanic tried various methods like changing the IC and tried various batterys but none of them worked. Now looking for original oneplus battery but theres no OP service center in our country.
so here's the review to date of the Polarcell on my wife's op3 :
tl;dr : so far so good, almost as per OEM specs !
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3t/accessories/replacement-batteries-one-t3794934/page4
Quick Update: My first mechanic was unable to fix the phone. Then I took the phone to another mechanic. As I didn't get to manage oneplus battery I was quite hopeless about the phone would fix at all. But the second mechanic fixed my phone within a day!
He said the problem was in the charging port not in the battery. And he changed the port. Thus my phone came to life again. Will test the dash charging once I get to home. Though it doesn't matter to me anymore as long as it takes charge from any source.
Hope it helps
Battery Bug
Once my battery hits 55% and lower it starts to freeze up and reboot. It is less frequent if I turn the timeout to 10 or more minutes but that just drains it faster. Do you guys think my OP5 battery is faulty? It is only a month old and has had the problem of random freezes and reboots since I first did the initial setup buying it from Amazon.

Yes. From initial set up before official OP5 system OTA, with crDroid after updating to 9.0.4, then AICP, and LineageOS 16. After I flashed stock 9.0.4 and ran a battery drainer it froze and rebooted less. It could be coincidence but it may be my battery and that my phone wasn't new from Amazon but a refurbished unit haha. I'm almost thinking of downgrading to OTA 5.1.7 to see if it is a Pie issue bug.

Further experimenting I installed the LKT RAM management module from Magisk Manager and the reboots and freeze ups are almost gone. Only had two today. One while sleeping and after work a few hours ago.

Care for a battery change? The issue might be with the battery...
installed new battery
My battery was fine around 86% but i did ordered one a few months ago.
It was a LOSONCOER which claimed to be around 3800mah.I thought it was a scam but it was cheap and it should be at least 3300 if not 3800mah.
I installed it 4 days ago and the results amazed me.IT is 3800mah and more. Accubattery says 4000mah but i also see it in the SOT.
Its much better. No temperature sensor though. It keeps saying 25.1 Celsius.
Some early screenshots below.
