Hi guys, I received my Nexus this Monday and I'm loving it but I noticed something weird today.
So last night put my phone on charge at around 17% and used it for about 30mins.i checked how much it had charged via the battery indicator in the notification bar and it still showed only 17% even though the battery bar had the thunder bolt through it.
Ok so the phone has been on charge all night, approx 8 hours. To my surprise its only 67% now! Still showing the charging battery icon. I don't understand what is going on?
Can anyone tell me what's up?
I'm currently still using my HTC Desire HD charger.
Thanks

I think the problem was my usb extention! Bummer, now I gotta deal with a short wire till I find a longer one. I'll report back if the problem persists

R: Weird battery charging.....
I had a similar issue tonight.
I plugged in the usb cable with 9% of battery left (stock charger),and the
battery icon became instantly 100% (full charge!) in about 4 seconds...:what:
So i left it in charge for all night, and an hour ago (6:15),it was showing 78% (???).
I have never experienced something like this before...

This has been reported more often. It's pretty odd, seems something in the battery controllers goes a bit nuts. I hope it's simply a software/firmware thing.
My N4 hasn't displayed this behaviour over the month that I've had it for.
Gotta say I haven't experienced this yet but thanks for your post

Stock charger sucks, It has deep problems. I noticed last night, I connected the charger and under settings/battery it showed as USB charging. Using franco kernel app, I forced fast charge, woke up like 4 am and phone charged 5% (4 hours later). I unplugged, disable fast charge and now it charges fast as a regular standard charger.
I was using my old blackberry charger, since stock is really bad, it's being blamed even to the red light of death... I don't know..
R: Weird battery charging.....
I've searched for some infos,and found this:http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium_polymer_battery
Look at the "Charging" section.

Just as an update, my phone has been charging pretty well since I removed the usb extention cable. I have invested in a 2 meter length micro usb cable and hopefully that will deal with my need for a longer cable and not hinder my night time charging. I'll let you guys know how it goes
Thanks neo for your research....

Same hapend to me, when phone got discharged, dead instantainly...
So i RMA..
I too decided to try a usb extension as the wire was too short for me..
Since ive started using the extension by battery or battery reporting has really been weird.
Sometimes itll say USB charging although it is still through AC
It will take like 6 hours to charge
And battery reporting and discharging will be completely off

Yesterday I had the Nexus (with 30% battery left) connected to my pc's usb to charge it,after 5 seconds,it shows "Full charge"...:what:
So i decided to left it connected...and after 10 minutes, all returned normal, charging became normal starting from 35%...
Weird, but I think all this is normal, cause of the Li-po battery nature.

This has been happening to me and unplugging it and plugging it back in usually fixes it.

For the last two days, my Nexus 4 has been charging weirdly. I leave it to charge overnight and when I wake up its at (usually) 78%. When I go to the battery stuff in the settings it switches between charging and not charging. It's back and forth. Has anyone seen this?

I've seen this on mine when connected to a computer. I was using a 10ft cable from Monoprice.
When using shorter cables it worked fine. Might just be a bad cable.

I'm also using stock cable and charger. I used a tooth pick and pushed lightly the shelf to the left. It seems to have worked. If it does it again I'm rmaing.

Any idea about how to charge it, then? Do I need to buy another or just use a spare charger?

Would this be a safe idea it terms of the life of the battery down the road? I also bought a 3rd party car charger.

I use chargers from various phones. Have used different phone chargers with all my phones. Never had or noticed any problems. I'm sure you will be fine.

Yes, it's safe. I'm using an old Samsung charger to charge my Nexus. The charger doesn't really matter IMO.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
When using chargers that don’t come with the device, the only difference it can possibly cause is the rate of charging (how fast your device charges).
Just take a look at the milliamp rating on your charger. The N4 comes with a charger that outputs at 1400ma. I found that if I charged my N4 with a charger made for SE Arc, it takes forever to charge which isn’t a surprise since that charger outputs 750ma.
Don’t worry about using a higher milliamp charger on a device that’s rated to charge at a lower rate. The device will only draw what it needs. I’m not sure what’s the maximum ma the N4 will charge at, but let’s assume it will charge at 1400ma maximum. Even if you use a 2A charger, it will still charge at 1400ma.
Even I thot its safe and was using my Nexus 7 charger with the Nexus 4 . everything was fine for a few hours. Then suddenly it froze and the screen started getting weird lines on it .I immediately removed the charger and while the device was rebooting I could notice that the screen had a burn in kinda image on it. It slowly faded away later. Haven't used the Nexus 7 charger since and I've never got the same issue again.

I don't think so. Cuz I wasn't even using it. It was just lying there most of the time. I switched on the display and was looking at battery monitor widget to check the charging status and then maybe twitter or something and it just froze. Held down the power button for 10seconds then restarted it.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
As a rule of thumb I'd keep then Nexus 4 away from the Nexus 7 charger.
Sent from my Nexus 4
The N7 charger is rated at 2A. I sometimes use it to charge my N4. Most of the time, I use a generic 2A charger. At the office, I use a Samsung 2A charger for my N4. I’ve encountered zero problems.
Truthfully I'm more concerned using a 12v in the car. Any suggestions what I can get?

Okay i had the charger in for like almost 30 mins now and its been on the same percent then went down one percent so i took the charger out let it sit for like a few mins then it went up one percent when i took the charger out it went back down is it something wrong with the charger or the rom or the battery stats?

Go to settings, Battery and see if it says AC charging or USB charging. Plug your phone in, try to play some games for a few mins then go back into the battery and see if its in AC or USB charging and if it has charged of discharged. Basically if the phone is in USB charging it is possible for it to lose charge or not charge at all. I had the same problem with my phone as it would not do AC charging, I tried it with another charger and it worked fine for a few weeks, I called google and they said it was a problem with the battery (not the charger) and they set up an RMA.

I was charging the phone via the wallport adapter starting around 14%. A few minutes in the charge indicator/icon flicker on and off and I get all these "Low Power" warning spam.
I try to change cables but the phone power level just dropped from about 13% to 0% in less than a minute. After plugging in a different cable the phone is charging fine now.
What exactly happened? My friend mentioned the cable might be damage and something short circuited. Should I be concern about damages to the battery?
Comments are appreciated,
Thank you

I had the same problem except my battery percentage never went to 0. The charging would flicker on/off then the battery percentage would slowly go down/stay the same/or charge extremely slowly. I switched to a different charger and haven't had a problem since. The LG one is bad. I'm using the stock LG cable with the new charger now.
Im on stock 4.2.2 with Matr1x kernal...mine takes too damn long
This isnt a new device so not the first run obviously... And had this problem on full stock aswell...using the original LG charger.
Takes around 5+ hours to full charge from 25% to 100%
Its not a biggie since i plug this is in before going to sleep and by the time i wake up in the morning (around 7 hours ) its fully charged...but i just want to know is it a hardware problem only in mine?? Or a common issue??

next time you charge, go to the phones main settings, about phone, status.. check if its connecting/charging as usb or ac. usb takes longer to fully charge than ac.

It only takes 3 to 4 hours to charge my phone by using the original LG charger.
around 2-3 hrs with wall charger and 6-7 hrs with USB.
3 to 4 hours charging from the wall and about 6 charging from USB. I'd suggest swapping out the charger your using and see if that makes a difference.
3.3 hours from under 20% to 100

Seems like it varies device by device... My cousin's nex 4 takes around 5 hours...
And i think ROM and the kernal has nothing to do with it

The LG original charger that came with the phone kept randomly ticking from AC to permanent USB charging on the wall. I switched chargers and it stays on AC now.
there's been a few issues with the stock charger, some are inferior to others, I charge mine while I sleep, but my old lg charger is alot better, same with iphone charger
Mine takes more than 3 hours on wall charing
