Hi folks,
Before somebody says "but that's precisely the pretty good thing about Nexus 4..." let me tell you that I couldn't wait until google shuts up and takes my money, and so I went and grabed one from SFR, a French carrier, and those guys lock the sim card. Now I want to know if it is possible to unlock it, because time to time I travel to another country and I may want to buy a temporal sim card in order to not use the crazily expensive roaming service from SFR.
So, then, did somebody already figured out how to unlock this phone ?
Thanks in advance.
Have you tried another sim in it? I ask because I've never heard of a network locked N4. Also, o2 UK claim their N4s are network locked but they aren't.

Great! No, I didn't try. Is there any other way to know if it is actually locked? In my previous Xperia Pro it was informed in the service menu, in the Nexus 4, I entered to the service menu by dialing *#*#4636#*#* but I cannot find that information.

That's because as far as anyone is concerned, the phone is SIM unlocked regardless of who sells it or claim that its locked.

Ok. Thank you very much to you both. I was ready to pay the 80€ SFR charges for unlock it. Now I will ensure to try with another sim card before (and reply in this thread as soon as I have a confirmation for everybody else).
Hi JanusDC,
Weird, just receive my Nexus 4 today from SFR 1 hour ago (wife's SFR contract), put my Orange SIM card and... no desimlock code needed, all is fine I have my Orange APN's so data works, calls, etc (just tested)...
At least for me, SFR doesn't simlock the phone... strange
My previous Nexus (Galaxy Nexus) was simlocked by SFR but not the Nexus 4...

Really great to know! That's the kind of confirmation I was waiting for. So, I hope nobody pays the 80€ they ask for desimlock it... and we should denounce them for cheating that way, don't you think?

You're welcome , the funny thing (si je peux dire ) is when why wife called SFR for to order the Nexus 4 I asked her she ask if the phone was simlocked... reply from SFR: YES, but it's free after 3 month or you need to pay (you're right 80 euros)... received the phone now about 2 hours, as I said above it's very recent , the phone is desimlocked!!! :silly:

Yes, but in this case the phone is desimlocked... so... but for my previous Nexus (Samsung Galaxy Nexus) this one was simlocked (fortunately when I bought it I was with SFR (my SFR contract), after about 2 1/2 month I moved to Orange... and there I had to do desimlock it because my Orange SIM doesn't work, need the unlock code ) and in fact all the Nexus line should be desimlocked dixit Google (correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's only, here, in France, with SFR that the previous Nexus was simlocked).
Yes it's a shame from SFR, but maybe they change their view with this last Nexus (only them have the exclusivity)...
In any case a Nexus 4 ordered from SFR in France is desimlocked...
I'm haaaaaaaapyyyyyyy :laugh::silly:
For now root...

Yes, but I don't know what would have happened if I would have paid the 80€... would they had told me "Sorry, get your money back, it is already desimlocked", or, more probably, they would just had taken my money and said "Now you are free, enjoy!"...

Desimlock an already desimlocked phone from a carrier for 80 euros payed.... it's direct the customer service!!!
Maybe SFR was "mis à l'amende" by Google? Since the Nexus phones are and should be desimlocked...?

yes yes anyone can google but half of these sites are dodgy. Why do you think I posted here.
i ordered an unlock code from the web said 5 to 30 mins, that was 5 hours ago !! im still waiting........ i will let you know if and when it comes through.
first handset i think o2 have locked.
is there no such thing as an imei unlock code generator ?? how do all these websites do it ??
if anyone can unlock my HD2 quicker i will pay for it !
Second in the google results is leo.unlock-now.com
I purchased the unlock code for my Touch HD (was locked on Orange) from blackstone.unlock-now.com

Yes i did ask O2 for it they said it would be upto 28 days... and would cost me 15.00 pounds.
i paid 17.99 on MOBILEUNLOCKED.COM for a 5-30 mins service which i thought was worth the extra few pounds.
digging around a bit there are a few websites this guy runs (the contact info in it is the same) and the e-mails come from mobileunlocked.com
If they clearly sold you a phone without simlock, they must provide a device without simlock, it is as simple as that. If they are not willing to change it fast, I would give it back and get it somewhere else.
If they are customer friendly, they usually do have ways and solutions. A Samsung phone I had was unlocked in a service center within 10 minutes, my Xperia took the same way. I actually never "buy" phones through contractual down payments...
will let you guys know how I get on with leo.unlock-now.com

Anyone heard from their respective websites yet? I really doubt that a website will be able to unlock it over the insternet in "a few hours" when a phone provider has to send the information off to htc to get it done.
I have had bad experiences in the past trying to unlock sonys and nokias (not mine) and wouldnt use one again. Im sure there are very reliable sites out there but the ones I used which I researched before using just took my money then kept it for 2 days before saying that my phone couldnt be unlocked.

Hi guys,
I have a question. I just won a Nexus One on ebay and the guy that sells it tells me it's SIM locked to T-Mobile. Is there such a version ? And if so, how easy is it to unlock it myself ?
Waiting for your answers, thanks in advance!!!
Nope. All N1's are sim unlocked.
Even when bought with a T-Mobile program ? Sorry for asking again but this guy insists that it's locked. And I also found some site that offer unlock services for the Nexus One, so I reaaaaaally want to make sure before buying one as I won't be able to return it if there is a problem as I live in Greece

My understanding is that no N1's are sim locked. Google said the same when the phone was released. Worst case scenario is that you'll have to drop $10-15 to get an unlock code online, but I'm pretty sure it's unlocked.
Anyone else care to comment?
All Nexus Ones come unlocked. There is no locked version of the Nexus One - it would defeat one of the imperial concepts Google is shipping with the phone.
if that is the case so why people is buying unlocked N1s
it's much cheaper to buy T-Mobile version and then put any sim inside
am i right or i am missing something????

The T-Mobile version requires a 2 year contract which over its lifespan will cost more than buying the unsubsidized version upfront.
And to the OP, Google has said that all N1 phones are unlocked whether its subsidized or not - one of the advantages of selling the phone themselves.
Even if your phone 'is' Sim locked, which it's probably not, after 90 days of service with T-Mobile, you can call them, ask for an unlock code, and they will send you one via email, for free. Don't pay money to some idiot on eBay when you can do this yourself at zero cost, especially since you likely won't have to do it at all.
Also, stop pressuring the seller about whether or not it's really locked or not. Maybe he'll look into it, find out it's really unlocked after all, and jack up the price!

I know for a fact that some nexus ones are locked
I know this is an old thread, but it's what i found try to figure out why i my phone didn't work with a tmobile sim while on a business trip. I Purchased my nexus one from KT olleh in Korea in march '11. I call KT and they connected me to HTC in Korea. HTC gave me the unlock code for free over the phone. I just wanted to share so that other people with locked N1s don't think they going insane. The FAQ should probably be updated.
FAQ Updated:
- Q13: Is Nexus One carrier-locked? Will it work with my carrier / network?
A: There should be no such thing as carrier-locked N1. All the rumors of carrier-locked N1s, including bits of misinformation from SFR/Vodafone, are untrue. There might be several weird cases, only one reported on the forum after 1 year of phone existence, in which the previous statements won't hold - but if truly existent, these are abnormalities.

I went into a retail store of SFR and asked them about the Nexus one. The woman told me that the phones where locked to SFR network.
That girl told me that SFR will only unlock the phones after 6 months. I'm leaving the country in 25 days... She also told me that if I wanted to unlock it before I'll have to make it unlocked somewhere else... so
I've been browsing the net and honestly, It's hard to know where I can get unlocking codes for nexus one. Most websites I found weren't looking very legit...
And most people still believe that nexus one is always unlocked...but since Vodafone got exclusivity in France they decided to lock the device...
So yeah, where/how can I unlock a nexus one? (Receiving unlock codes)
Have you actually tried another carrier's SIM on your nexus one? In Spain Vodafone sells the nexus one unlocked and I bet most of the representatives don't even know about it, since they lock pretty much every other phone.

I didn't bought one yet since I really need to be sure that I can unlock it before I leave. I can't tell if the girl is wrong about it but I called an other store and on the website, it's written that the phone is limited to SFR network. So unlike other EU countries. SFR apparently locked them.
I'd suggest getting a different sim from a friend and trying it out. I can't really believe they'd lock the N1 after all the publicity of it being an unlocked phone.

They are not locked, mine is a SFR version, and it's unlocked, no nexus one has ever been sold locked, not even the Korean versions.
SFR staff and the phone house will tell you it's locked because they don't know better and all the usual SFR pack phones are locked but it's not.
I confirm also, bought mine from SFR to use it with a Sim from Orange.
People at SFR say it is locked, which is wrong.
@Doume
Really? when did you buy it?
As far as I know, phone sold before july 24 (or something like that) where unlocked. They were available in many store but now new phones are only available in "Espace SFR". Tomorrow I should get one and will be able to confirm if they are locked or not.
All nexus ones are unlocked. Even the vodaphone ones.
I should receive my nexus one in 2 or 3 days, retail stores we out of stock again so I ordered it online. Will update once I get it.
Ok so,
[off topic]I canceled my order from sfr. On all the step before getting that phone from a online order. I didn't go farther than the identity validation in 5 days. [/off topic]
So this morning I got my nexus one from someone who got it as a replacement for a nokia. He sold it as he had a blackberry. Anyway, a brain new nexus one for a fraction of the price they sells it without contract.
I inserted my old fido (rogers) sim card and it appears to work. There is a little "SFR" drawn inside but thats it.
I got some error reading the gsm card but I think it's an other issue.
So yeah, even if everybody in the SFR society thinks that it is locked. It is apparently not. On a side note, just to show how uninformed they are. On the spec of the phone they says that the screens only has 16bit colors. While it has been proven to have 24bit and able to do 32bit opengl. 24 bit RGB and 8 bit alpha.
Anyway, I'm happy. I have it now.
ps: the problem with my order wasn't exactly sfr's fault. The people to blame are the people at fia-net.fr. 1 week to identify who I am to sell me an overpriced phone vs 1 random guy that sells me a brain new phone (unpackaged) for a fraction of the price. It just doesn't make sense. I say that, but I'm still in the process of the cancellation of my order.
I bought a n1 this morning at a SFR store, Build EPF21b, and no simlock. Just the little red SFR symbol inside the phone - thats all.
Just went to look my build version. I remember it was something similar to you. But now after update, it is now FRF91. Not sure if that means we will receive OTA updates from google or from Vodafone. One thing is that we have a different set of "stock" app than the US version.
This is probably a stupid question but is there an issue with unlocking a Desire HD from Vodafone UK? I was looking for code websites and one for instance said they couldn't supply codes for Desire HDs and Desire Zs etc...
If this is possible are there any recommendations for the UK?
Just ring vodaphone and tell em you wanna use a foreign sim when you go abroad they should give you unlock code

I think you have to S-OFF your Desire HD, this will allow you to read/write ALL flash
Maybe a fool question but let's assume that we have got a locked DHD (whether Vodafone or something else) and we could not get unlock code from carrier.
In this case, If we root + S-off + recovery + flash a new rom does this transaction make it unlocked?
No, sorry. SIM lock is very different.
AndyCr15, can u elaborate on that. What animal exactly simlock is?
Sorry, can't elaborate as I don't know how it works. All I can say is SIM unlock usually (always that I know of) has to be done using a code from a site or eBay. It's not part of the ROM.
Wow I did not know that Andy. Thanks for the heads up. So should be stay away from locked version.

Not in OZ. Mine was definately carrier locked to VHA. I went through the 'online' process and it was free. If I had of rang them on the phone to do it it would have cost me $75.

is there anybody, whose device that has been bought from Three (especially Pay As You Go) was SIM-locked?
(I hope the thread's intensity becomes weaker).
funny enough yes. i bought one for my mrs today and after commenting only a few hours ago i thought i should try. so i put a giffgaff sim in it and it asked for unlock code??????
so i tryed with a EE sim and asked same again.
then i put the 3 sim back in got it all set up with google sync and apps etc and tryed again wigh sims and hey presto it worked????????
whats that all about?

I must've missed out on that as they're showing as £249.99 now. Shame really as I'm thinking about moving from GG to Three.
Instead I've picked up one from the Orange ebay store (£169.99 with £20 credit included). Seems like unlock codes can be picked up cheaply enough too - here's hoping the Orange branding isn't overboard.

Hi, I had to do the same, because my UK contact was late by one day (she could go for the phone on 1st Aug 2013, offer ended at 31st July...), so I've ordered from Play.com with free Pillips BT speaker (http://www.play.com/stores/ChitterChatter/listing/828995144). +10Ł & Locked, but still satisfactory offer. When do you get yours? I've never thought of Orange branding... can it be disturbing?
And from where do you buy trustworthy unlock code? I'll need sth like that, too!
I bought mine from the "official" Orange UK eBay store - which is run by ChitterChatter, the same company in your play.com link. I'm hoping it gets delivered at some point this week.
There's quite a few sellers advertising an XT890 unlock on ebay for less than £10, so it seems pretty straight forward to get the handset unlocked.
Looking into people who bought the RAZR i last time Orange sold them for this price, the handsets themselves don't have any Orange branding. Usually, Orange really go over the top with their branding so it's nice to know these won't have that problem.
Three raised there price to £249.99 a day after I bought mine for £149.99 :') guess I was lucku
