Defy+ 3G w/ Tmobile US - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone, long time moder first time poster,
Today I received a Defy+ in the mail from Amazon, it was supposed to be a Defy but I figured I'd play around with it a bit, can always send it back since its the wrong thing.
I've managed to get the latest quarx build on it, and everything seems good, but unfortunately 3g isn't working. After several dozen attempts of rebooting and trying different APN settings I realize that I'm an idiot and the Defy+ is only 900/2100 for WCDMA since it was never sold in the US, where Tmobile US use 1700 if I recall correctly.
So my question, are the frequencies supported defined in software and is there any way to change this by using defy+ baseband to enable use of this, or is this going back and I'll do better to try to find a defy to buy locally (in US anyways) thats would enable use of the 1700mhz wcdma spectrum?
Thanks for any advice,

Nexus One network issue

Hi, i was using CM7 for a week, then suddenly, the mobile network begin to be freaky, cant stay on a network, cant make call and anything, I already cheked the apn settings and everything..
also switched to wcdma prefferred, to gsm only, or to wcdma sometime got signal, but after 1 or 2 minutes, cant connect to a network...
anyone can help please..
I'm having this as well ever since the update.
Gingerbread is half-baked if you ask me.
it seems to make and receive calls only in EDGE (in GSM ONLY mode), but when i change it to preferred wcdma or to wcdma only to get 3G, sometime get full signal but cant make any calls and also cant use data and sometimes got no service.. only in EDGE mode..
all this happen after using CM7 for a week... anyone please help..
baseband and radio are 32.50.0032U_5.12.00.08...
I also restore it to stock to FROYO FRF33 and the same issue, dont know what cause it..
I'm not sure it is fully related to gingerbread. I'm still using CM6 and had this issue on and off for about 3 days. It seems to have cleared up for me (knock on wood)
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
yess im having the same problem, i also noticed it after flashing to either honeycomb alpha or the new gingerbread update [i did both within an hour] but i cant fix this problem...:/
still cant connect to 3G, only in EDGE mode...
cant connect to a 3G network, already changed the radio to 5.08, 5.12 and downgrade it to 4.06 and nothing...
anyone know this issue??
if I cant solve it, I might gonna sell my Nexus One..,
Network issues have nothing to do with the phone, if they're constant with different ROMs. Check with your service provider.

is not the service provider, I change the sim card to another phone, and the 3G works flawless.
Also, put another sim of other carries with the same band, changed the APN settings, and it's the same problem with 3G, only work on 2G...
In that case, 2 options:
1) Wipe and check again.
If still doesn't work -
2) Hardware failure. Use the warranty.
I've been recently (1-2 months) battling with Data problems also and I don't know what the issue is. I know it isn't my Carrier because I just spent the whole month on the phone with them and they actually sent a Guy TO MY HOUSE to test the connection. I've never had problems before until around CM7 and me switching plans (which is what I thought it was).
My problem is that it works, but data just stops and doesn't want to reconnect. I have to toggle Airplane mode or reset to jump start it. I think changing towers while driving might do this too.
I've done the same tests. Changed Sim, Swapped Sims, etc. EDGE seems to be stable for me but 3G is wonky. I've flashed a PASSIMG and started from scratch that way back to root and CM7. I've downgraded my HBoot and reupgraded it. I've wiped and changed radio versions.
Right now I plan to swap to a few other Gingerbread roms and see if that fixes it. My N1 being my only internet connection it is hard to download other custom roms but I grabbed a few from work and put on my SD card.
I'm not blaming CM7 but at this point I'm really thinking about changing phones.
Ive read that there are issues with the Nexus One gps. Is this true and if so, what issues have you experienced?
PS. GPS doesnt have anything to do with the carrier does it?
well... my nexus already have 1 year, I'll sell it in a very cheap price, and buy the INSPIRE 4G and root it...
thx for your help guys..

Warning: service menu settings!

Okay, this goes somewhat in the 'Well, DUH' category, but:
A post in the t-mobile thread implied that the phones may have 1700mhz capability, but it's just disabled. I did some poking around and found the setting for the service menu:
http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...rk-frequency-your-samsung-i9000-galaxy-s.html
And voila, it worked, and hmm, interesting - there's a switch to enable 1700 (kind of). So I tried setting some of the band values, assuming that if I couldn't get cell signal, I'd just change them back. No problems, right?
WRONG. When I changed the values, the phone suddenly decided it didn't want to read my simcard anymore. It said 'invalid PIN' even though the card still worked in my other phone.
With no sim card, the service menu was blank. I couldn't change it back.
I ended up doing a factory format, and it still complained about my simcard, but at least the service menu was back to normal. I changed it back (basically had to select all GSM/UTMS bands), and now it's happy again.
Now restoring my titanium backup, whee.
Anyway, moral of the story - be careful, and anything you assume may be wrong!

I don't know, but I don't plan on trying it again anytime soon until I figure out what happened.

understood and i dont blame you im not prepared to try myself and im generally quite reckless with such matters.
can i ask you waht your reason for wanting to do this was in the first place? is it becasue you have tmous service and have switched to or are considering switching to attt? if so, can you tell me the details of all plans and potential plans involved?
i ask because im a tmous user now but im porting over to a prepay att 50/month unlimited voice text and data plan and ive heard mixed reviews as to how it will actually work for me.
thanks

If you have switched to, or are going to AT&T you don't need to anything at all.
It works fine as is on AT&T.
I am on t-mobile and not real thrilled about EDGE. The purpose for hacking around is to attempt to get both 1700 AND 2100 bands to work. You need both for AT&T and the phone I have only has 2100 enabled.
I might as well go into more details:
1) The 3g screen lists 5 bands including 1700, but when you select 'all' It selects four of them and leaves 1700 blank. When you select 1700 it unselects the others.
There is a 'combination' screen that allows you to select both 1700 and 2100. This is also when things went totally to hell and it decided to boycott my sim card.
Now that I know things work, and my titanium backup went pretty smoothly (lost almost all of my s-memos though!!! @#*$&(@#(&#@) I might hack around with it again. But if the 1700/2100 combo didn't work, there's no reason to think any other combos will work.

Thanks, its my understanding that this will work on ATT 3g straight out of the box and unless one can perform some sort of alchemy only edge is possible in tmous.
You just stated that you need 1700 and 2100 for ATT to work but it's my understanding this is only the case for tmobile.
Did you misspeak or can you verify this is the case? I'm fully expecting to port my tmous number to att tomorrow and have 3g working.
Thanks,
Jason

Frank,
Thanks for checking this out. I've been wanting to get the Note, but really don't want to switch to AT&T. If you find a way to get this working it would be fantastic! Thanks again for your time and efforts with this!

Sorry, I misspoke. 1700/2100 for T-mobile. 850 for AT&T.
There is another thread regarding what settings to use for AT&T that you might need:

Thanks for the info! Just to confirm, was the SIM card in the phone from AT&T or from T-Mobile?
Maybe I should apologise, I posted screens dispaying 1700MHz options.
I also tried to activate it (useless in Holland, but curious) and my SIM also failed on me. I was worried my phone was broken. Only way I could fix it was by reflashing all stock inc modem/baseband/radio.
Stupid, every user may access these options and could lose service on his/her phone.
Edit: Assumption is the mother of all **** ups
that would be cool if it could be activated, i would just stay with T-Mobile, otherwise im going to try straight talk but lose my grandfathered true unlimited internet plan
I can't wait to see what Frank comes up with. It's awesome that he's already discovered the 1700mHz frequency and is figuring out how to enable it. Man, there would be so many more people who would be able to use this phone if the 1700 channel was opened up! This is definitely the thread I check most.

[Q] 3g Issue

I'm having a problem with my 3g connection since I flashed a new ROM.
I'm not sure if this is related to the fact that I'm using an unlocked Defy on AT&T. I won this phone a year ago, and I've been using it unlocked on AT&T since March with no problem.
I'm new to modding, but OCD about streamlining my electronics. My friend suggested rooting my device and flashing a new ROM. I decided on stock Nordic Froyo, and it makes me so happy not to see all the T-mobile crap in my apps tray. BUT the collateral damage is not so hot. I have no 3g or even 2g connection anymore.
I tried the fix in this thread http:// forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944258 and was able to get a signal with 4 bars instead of the previous state of emergency calls only, but no letters like E or 3g and no ability to use the internet/transfer data. I also installed the broadband switcher in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1052745 and tried all of the T-mobile US bands. No luck. I did reset the APN to default. No change. I've been using wifi, but will have to go back to work soon. Not having access to the smart part of my smartphone will feel sort of like having an arm cut off.
I'm not sure what to do next. I could try flashing another ROM, but from what I've read in the forums, that's no guarantee. If anyone has any suggestions to help a noob, I'd be forever grateful.
(And yes, I did first post this as a reply to another AT&T thread, but I think my problem is different than that OP's issue.)
Thanks in advance!
did u try the international baseband..
I just did. Same issue.
I've also tried the Argentine and Central American basebands. No luck. AT&T broadcasts 850/1900 while T-Mobile does 850/1700/2100, but 850 worked fine for the last 10 months. I don't get why things would fall apart now.
UPDATE: I was able to fix the problem by manually entering APN info. Am running on H now.

[Q] No connection for calls/SMS but data works?

My SIM unlocked Defy has been sitting unused on the shelf for several months - I did plan to sell it after upgrading to an Atrix, but never quite found the time to sort it out.
I've now decided to pass the Defy on to my girlfriend as a Christmas present (yeah, I'm a tightwad ), but have not been able to get it to work correctly.
The problem is this. The Defy will not connect to the network to send or receive calls or SMS messages. However, the phone can connect to data services via 3G (even though, on my Giffgaff SIM, it gives some sort of error message saying connection will not be possible, before accessing the internet without problems!).
I've tried:
Multiple Basebands - including the various ones I used previously without any problems.
Multiple ROMs - CM7, MIUI, WajkIUI installed via CWM and a couple of Froyo SBFs installed using RSD. All these ROMs show the same characteristics - no calls or SMS but Data connections work.
Multiple SIMs on different networks. The Defy was originally a T-Mobile device but I unlocked this using a code from one of the Unlock sites and used it with an Orange SIM then my Giffgaff SIM with no problems. Now, the very same Giffgaff SIM shows the call/SMS problem. My girlfriend's T-Mobile SIM appears to be recognised normally and the network seems to be working but all calls and SMS messages fail instantly.
Multiple Wipes/Resets using both CWM and the stock recovery. None has resolved the problem.
A quick Google found the following link:
http://thewichitacomputerguy.com/blog/how-i-fixed-your-sim-card-does-not-allow-connection-network-g1
Unfortunately, I've tried everything recommended on that page without success.
Anybody have experience of this problems on their Defy and, if so, can anybody tell me how I can fix it?
I promised my girlfriend a phone so, if I can't get this Defy working properly, it's going to cost me a few quid so I would appreciate any assistance!
I've since discovered that my problematic Defy appears to have been blacklisted, almost certainly by accident by those wonderfully incompetent folks at Orange. Here's more information on a problem which has occurred with quite a few people here in the UK following the merger of the Orange/t-mobile networks in mid-December:
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=3677593
I bought the phone on eBay from a seller and used it for around six months without any problems so I think it incredibly unlikely that the blacklisting is valid - I mean, who would report a phone as stolen around 8 months after it was taken?!?
Just waiting to hear back from the eBay seller to see if he can provide me with his original proof of purchase for the phone so I can get the blacklisting lifted. I don't rate my chances all that highly.
Hi all. sorry to revive a few month old thread, but at least I'm not creating a whole new one!
I have a Motorola Defy. Generally I'm pretty geeky, but I decided to root it at install ICS 4.0.4... it all went well... eventually. However I have no conectivity to my network. It will not send or receive texts calls or data to the network. Wifi does work still.
Honestly I'm done screwing around with it. I just want to restore it back to original factory settings and admit defeat. Where can I find the original firmware that will work In canada on the Telus network? This is my only phone, I have no other cell and no landline so I'm kinda in a pickle and would appreciate anything you could do to help me get up and running again.
If there is any more info you need just ask, I'll try to get it for you.
Try it with this baseband switcher. Maybe it will help you.
Thanks! I actually just saw your post, but I figured that out all by myself! It did work though! I appreciate the reply!
ok new problem... everytime I shut off my phone it reverts back to the wrong baseband. any idea on how to keep it on the new one? every time i reboot I have to swithc baseband then do a restart. it them switches and works perfect. If i shut the phone off it reverts and I have to go over it all over again.
Try to convert defy baseband switcher to a system app with Titanium backup.

Thanks Vicsa! Used Apps2ROM (ROOT) instead because I'm cheap, but had the same effect. You sir are awesome!
And now that my phone is working again perfect I'll be leaving the F***ing thing alone now unless i'm absolutely 100% sure what I'm doing. Generally I have no issue doing things like this to computers, but it would seem that phones are a whole new breed... Anyways THANK-YOU!!!!
You're welcome mate. Glad I could help you

CM12 network operator selection issue

Good day gentlemen. I have been using CM12 nightlies since CM released them on my G900-W8. I am wondering if there is a way somehow to tell my phone to use my own network operator when it is available.
EX: I am with Videotron, however my phone connects to Rogers all the time, even though Rogers is not as strong as videotron in some areas, I don't get charged, but still annoys the crap out of me.
Is there a way to tell it to auto select videotron or to change something in the config file in order to force it to use videotron unless it is not available? An app maybe? A little searching brought me nothing so I come to the greatest community on the face of the internet, help me!
