[Q] Attachments & file view options - Windows 8 General

The following happened in W7, but I also experience this in W8:
I only use IE10 for my work-related Office Outlook Web Access.
When I attach a file to an email, the "Choose File to Upload" screen pops up.
When the Desktop content is listed, these files are shown in the Tiles View (see attachment).
Showing the content of any other folder but the Desktop, files are shown in the List View, as I want it to be.
If I change the Desktop content to be shown in the List View, pick a file to attach, and then try to attach a 2nd file, the content is back in Tiles View again.
This only happens with the Desktop.
And I don't experience this when using Google Chrome (or any other browser).
So my question: Is there a way to set the preferred view (e.g. List View) for the Desktop content in IE10, and that this setting is finalised?

Saving web pages on Universal

I would sometimes prefer to save web pages and also to read web pages which have been saved locally. But neither on Opera nor on Internet Explorer (for Universal) have I found these options.
In Windows for desktop, the problem might have been solved by copying the text to Word and then save it. But in my experience, this is not possible in Windows Mobile 5. It allows me to copy a text in one Word document, then close the document and open another where I paste it. But I have not been able to copy text from one application to another.
Any comments?

Folder list viewing?

Hi,
I am thinking about buying a Hermes but I use the folder list in Outlook exensively and have my reference system in differnt subfolders - taskfolders mostly but of course also e-mail folders.
It is possible to view folder list in hermes?
If so, how is the view in that case? Separately in one window over the whole sceen or on the left side as in outlook, or are both views possible?

Come on
Doesn´t anybody know this?!?

Folder View
Hi,
Yes - you can sue the folder view in the Messages section.
When looking at your inbox, click the button to the Top Left (showing 'Inbox') and you will see the folder list.
See attached image.

New HD2 owner with a few teething problems, please help.

HI,
I'm new to HTC and Windows mobile having come from iphone. I have a few teething problems and could do with some assistance. I have searched the forums but can't quite find the answers I'm looking for.
I've synced my Gmail account but it won't retrieve my old mail, how do I do this?
How do I find files that I have dragged on dropped into the "my documents" folder on my phone. I've dragged a folder of documents inc. word docs, excell and pdf's but I can't find them on the phone. How do I open these files using excel etc on the phone?
How do I add personal ringtones for my contacts?
I have read somewhere on here about an issue when making/receiving calls where the screen turns back on and your ear starts pressing all sorts of buttons/apps, has there been a fix for this and where do I find it as my phone has been doing this?
Cheers
I've figured out how to add personal ringtones, so that question doesn't need answering now.
to recieve old emails on your gmail account you need to change how far back you would like mail retrieved. this option can be found like this
email tab, any email account, press inbox, press menu, press tools, press options
now choose the account you want to edit
pick send/recieve schedule
now you can amend your sync settings
to assign a ring tone to a particular contact:
press start, press contacts, pick the contact you wish to edit, press menu, press edit
now find the ringtone field and add the tone you desire
As for finding editing files you should download a file explorer, total commander is popular and free
Resco explorer is better (my opinion only as its more finger friendly) but is not free
hope some of this helps

Yes, big help, many thanks. Is it possible to set your email accounts so that everytime you go into the email it automatically checks for new mail rather than going into the menus and pressing send/receive? I've figured out how to change how often it checks for new mail, ie every 15 mins etc, but I would also like it to automatically check for new mail if I go into my emails
Does anyone know about the screen coming on whilst taking a call issue?
Having more problems with Gmail. The advice above worked for my inbox, but on my googlemail on my laptop I have different folders for different mail. I can't get these folders to sync with the HD2. I tried the same as above but no joy. Any help?
There should be an option for manage folders in that tools menu, where you can pick which folders to synce (I had to add one of my hotmail folders this way) should be the same for gmail I think.

How exactly do you drop to "my documents"? Do you drop to Computer\HD2\\\My Documents using the Windows explorer, or using other methods?
Normally you don't need to search for a file. Drop a Word document somewhere? Open Word, and File Open lists all the Word documents no matter where they are. Most applications have this type of pan-location file-open dialogue.

I open up my phone's card storage from "computer" on my laptop's start menu, and then simply drag files from my laptop to the "my documents" folder on the phone's card storage. I can open them using file explorer on the phone, but if I go into excel I can't figure out how to open them. When I open excel mobile it displays a blank spreadsheet and I can't figure out how to open files. Can you help?

This is a (stupid) limitation of the WinMo file system
Pocket Office programs only look in the 1st tree branch of files on a storage card- so files in Storage Card/My Documents will be listed, but files in any My Documents subfolders won't.
Files in main memory can look one level lower (ie My Documents/Business)
So, if your files are smallish in size, you may be better to store them in main memory as long as you don't have more than one level of My Documents subfolders.
Another option would be to create a shortcut to the folder holding your files in File Explorer. Tapping file names direct from explorer opens them in the linked program.

That is a strange limitation. Perhaps they may address this issue with winmo7?
How do I create shortcuts, do I do this on the phone, or active sync on the laptop?
It's a bit of a kludge, but if you decide which folder you want to create the shortcut for, navigate to that using File Explorer on the HD2, then Tap/Hold on the folder name and select Copy from the context menu
Now navigate to My Device/Windows/Start Menu/Programs; use the keyboard to move the cursor to any item that isn't a subfolder, and then go Menu/Edit/Paste Shortcut. This will place an entry in Programs pointing to your subfolder, called 'Shortcut to...' You can rename this to remove the 'Shortcut to..' bit, or call it something more representative.
Once it's in Programs, you could then assign one of the 9 program shortcut tiles on the home page to this shortcut. Executing it will open File Explorer at your subfolder, from where you can open any of the files.

wow, that's a process and a half
Ok so did exactly what you said and I get an error message saying
"The file "x" cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. IF the problem persists try reinstalling or restoring this file"
What do I do now?
Also how do I remove things from the start menu?
If you press the Windows hardware key, can you see your new 'shortcut' there? If you press it, do you get the same error message?
It might be that the HTC Sense shortcut can't open a folder- if so I'm a bit stuck for further ideas! You could look at a program called Launchpad . This installs itself as a program launcher and is opened by pressing the top left of the taskbar- it has a number of configurable shortcuts, which can include folders and subfolders. At $3.99 it is an excellent program, though I appreciate it is a bit rich to expect to have to pay for something that ought to be in the default OS
[Edit: I wrote a review of Launchpad Here ! ]

Yeah I got the same message. No worries, I'll just have to open them through file explorer. Cheers
OK- must be a limitation of the system! Works OK with Resco File Explorer rather than the built-in one!
Might be worth a look at Launchpad- it does make life easier for a lot of program or settings launches

That's strange. I've never seen a blank sheet on excel mobile. When I start excel, it goes directly to the fileopen screen, showing me a list of xls(x) files on the device.
If you are looking at a sheet, tap OK (top right) to close it. You'll go back to the fileopen screen.

If there are no existing files for that program, Pocket Office will start with a new blank document. You only see the list once there is at least one existing file.

Thanks, didn't realise that. HOwever, it still won't recognise files probably due to the subfolder system mentioned by NeilM. I will try adding the files to the business folder later and see what happens

[APP] Extract Outlook winmail.dat / TNEF attachments

Dear all,
I guess many of us have already stumbled over "winmail.dat" or "attxxxx.dat" attachments in our Android email clients.
These attachment names usually occour, when somebody who is using a Microsoft Outlook EMail client sends you an certain RTF (rich text format) email with attachments. MS Outlook then packs these attachments into a TNEF (Transport-Neutral Encapsulation Format) envelope. Other MS Outlook Clients can deal with this format, but, however, most of the other email clients cannot! They will receive instead an attachment with the above mentioned naming and can basically do nothing with it.
While this is a well known (and annoying) circumstance there are already plug-ins for many open email clients such as Mozilla Thunderbird. For Android however there seemed to be nothing (and I have been doing quite some research on it).
So I finally decided to write my own app to deal with TNEF attachments. Luckily there was already an existing Java package which could do the extraction job so that I "only" had to create the Android app around it and do some debugging on the original code. My kudos here go to Amichai Rothman for his Java TNEF package (http://www.freeutils.net/source/jtnef/)!!
I originally created this application for my own purposes but then I thought it is worth while sharing it with the community. It is already bi-lingual (english and localized to german) and should get its job done.
The app itself registers as a handler for *.dat or *.DAT files and for email attachments. When you e.g. try to open a "winmail.dat" attachment from within your Android email client or a "winmail.dat" file with your file browser the app should be launched or you see a chooser box where you can select this app. When you do so you will see an alert box. When you press "Ok" the app will try to extract the contents of "winmail.dat" to a local folder. The default for this folder is "/sdcard/winmail". After it has successfully completed the extraction the app leaves a notification. When you open the the notification it will show you the contents of the target folder in another alert box. You can then use any file manager to browser to the target directory to access the real attachments out of the "winmail.dat" envelope.
If you launch the app directly it will present you a setup screen with some explanation on it and the possibility to specify your own target directory to where the extracted files should go.
The only system privilege that the app acquires upon installation is to be able to write to the external storage (sdcard). So it does not really have the chance to do severe harm to your device
If you have any questions please feel free to ask. Likewise I'd be interested in any feedback.

There's something I forgot. Here's a winmail.dat file for testing purposes
Superb app
Superb app to view mail attachments which weren't readable on Android otherwise. Any chance to also view or even accept appointments sent from Outlook?
Rgds
Thank you very much! I am currently looking into this calendar issue. This trickier than the other stuff. Will keep you posted.

It was reported that the app was not shown as a handler for winmail.dat files by some file explorers and mail clients.
While I am investigating this the workaround is to use the OI File Manager which always worked for me.
