Hi all,
I tend to use a BT headset with my Athena most of the time, but today I forgot it before going out! so I had to go back to using the Athena to my ear, not a huge problem with hands my size, however even with the volume down to its lowest it was still way to loud. Does anyone know of a reg hack or small program that will let you lower the volume down to a discreet volume, and not a hands free volume? its not a problem most of the time, but as a paramedic some of my calls can be a little personal. Its just in case it happens again. you can appreciate I'm not in the position to nip home for left items
Many thanks
Jay

I put my fingers over the loudspeakers.... isn't confortable but it works!
I have been thinking about this issue a bit lately myself. My thought is to glue something over both the left and right speaker to completely or almost completely seal it. I might try with different materials and see the effect. May be we can make it almost like a normal embedded earpiece.. just thinking.

hi
i already tried to put tape over the speakers, and can tell you it wont work out. it is like the hole athena will sound, the backcover acts like a speaker. when you tape the speaker holes it sounds a litle bit like it came from a cave, but is still much to loud for a 'private' conversation. i think you have to grab a soldering iron and a resistor, to come to a solution, or someone find a way to reduce the volume by software some more than the volume slider can do.
mad
Buy several cheap sets of earbuds and put them in different locatations where you might need them (car, office, briefcase). Not needing stereo for phone calls, clip off one of the earbuds for easier handling.

oops!

Well that is a good idea, and one that I have done already. One at the ambulance station, one at home, one in the car, and one in the rig. three ended back at home AHH the price of age! The one in the rig got nicked, so ive put them all back now, but thats why I need the program or hack.
Thanks for the idea's guys, any more?
take care

That is a good idea, could it be so, that there is a kinds of software, that we can adjust the volumen of left and right speaker, so that we can just use the right speaker or just use the left speaker, what ever. has anybody heard of that kind of tiny little soft ware?
Is there a regestry setting to lower the in call volume on the athena itself, so it would start at nothing?
Any solution on this "problem"? Sometimes my headset runs out of battery.
Regards
Hans
This only seems to be a problem with some of the cooked ROMS. The original WM6 ROM that came with my 7501 had a good low-volume level, but when I switched to AP4 the low-end is what used to be about mid-level before.
It must be either a registry change, or a sound driver.
Or a software that make it possible to decrease the volume more
I did a REALLY a stupid thing this weekend. I had the trunk of my wife's car up and had no pockets, so I put the phone on the edge of the trunk and put everything else in the trunk. I swung the lid down and it bounced back up.
I had no idea what was keeping the trunk from closing until I saw my phone sitting there. Thankfully, the trunk's on a Toyota Echo, so it didn't crush the phone, but it did dent the faceplate right where the speaker and email/browser button is.
Now calls are really scratchy and crackling, so I'm guessing that I have a partial connection to the speaker or crunched it well enough to kill it.
While it's useable, it makes it hard to use - is there anyone on the forums that does repairs?

How about you!!??
All the info you need is here.

I know this thread is a bit old, but I just fixed the same problem with my Hermes.
Find a good disassembly guide and pull the beast apart, when you get to the speaker, it will be caved in/crushed.
There are two clips on either of the long sides, unclip them and carefully lift the metal bit off a little way, get a small jewelers flat head screwdriver and push the dints out, being very careful of the delicate wires.
Or you could just find a new speaker
EDIT: While you're at it, bend the speaker contacts out a bit too just in case they were squashed, also to get better contact.
Why does HTC continue to put the USB connector, and especially the 3.5 headphone jack on the bottom of the phone? In this configuration you have to put the device in your pocket upside down, and to pull it out you're bound to press a button. And when you're not connected the jacks are just little more than traps. So why, when HTC does so many things well and is even innovative to some degree, fail to see the downside (no pun) to putting two extremely large holes, which are critical to the use of the phone, on the bottom of the device?
I guess so the 3rd party dealers can make them, I just got this for my office use.

Not much chance of listening to your music in that configuration, huh?

I have 1 similar, mine has 3.5 headphone jack in cradle, & output on back of cradle, also usb port. It rings through earphones & phonespeaker, Or external speakers. I love it. Don't know if this 1 does all that. Quig

personally i find it better with it on the bottom. Makes more sense. I would hate to see a wire over my screen listineing ot music.

You couldn't place the cord around the back side? With an L-shaped plug it would naturally fall the way the cord was pointed anyway, whether that was to the back or either side.
It's a lame orientation that makes little sense, imho. I have a Nokia N85 that I used between Winmo devices. Having the phone and power jacks on the top works very well (even if Symbian doesn't )
Having the audio jack on top would probably see them sued by Apple
It's just selfish to assume that HTC should pander to your specific needs. If it really irks you so much, maybe you shouldn't have bought it in the first place.
I prefer it on the bottom, out of the way, good for 3rd party cradles.
In the end, it's impossible to please everyone. Take it or leave it.
bottom works well for me too
One downside of this phone is that it struggles to make it through a day on a full charge. I drive a lot, so i can put it in a holder and plug the charger into the bottom. I also carry it in a horizontal belt holder. If it's in your pocket, does it matter if it's upside down?

I agree with concreteman.
HD2 is intended to be a business phone, so you will find a lot of them charging in the cars.
I also sometimes listen to the music in the car, and it certainly looks better and more graceful when both the charger and the audio cable are connected at the bottom.
Previously, my Touch HD looked like a Borg in the cradle with all those wires
being a user oh the Touch HD for a year, when i swapped over to the hd2 i found the connections at a much more convinient place than the hd's
I actually prefer them to be on the bottom as well. When I put the phone in my pocket I like to put it in upside down so that when I pull it out it's right side up. It's just more convenient for me and I don't feel like the wires are in the way.
i prefer the plugs on the bottom, Ive always put my phone into my pocket top down, so when i reach in and grab it, it is already in my hand in the orientation that i am going to use it. having the plugs, esp the headphone plug on the bottom is better for me because when using headphones with the phone in my pocket the cord comes straight out.
tref, i dont know what weird person u are, but i need the plugs on the bottom side of the phone, i hate them on the upper side like many other phones have now..
if the plug would be on the upper side i would need to rotate the phone first, before i could use it, else not

I really don't know what you guys are doing on your hd2, but I am a power user on my hd2 and my battery will end up to about ~35+/- 10~ by the end of the day. Thats from 8AM to 9PM at night.
I heavily multitask from google maps, browsing, listening to music on lunch breaks, movie clips of my next design from CAD to clients, text, check email CONSTANTLY, take random pictures with CAMERA for my next CAD inspiration...
And the list goes on.
It must certainly be the ROM and Radio you guys are using. Until then your HD2 will suffer badly like when I first got the phone and complained like a Biotch!
I used to use Duttys HG v1.2, and things only got better flashing 2.09 radio with Clean EX roms.
Everyone's hd2 is different so ymmv.
I personally also prefer all the sockets at the bottom
I always have my phone in my pocket upside down, so when I pull it out it's already in my hand the way I use it and I don't have to flip it around to use it.....and I would HATE to have the earphone jack on top...that's just silly in my opinion....I love it the way it is...
I put my phone in my pocket top towards my feet so when I pull it out its right side up already... so having the plugs on the bottom makes sense.
My computer is under my desk, so charging my phone while it sits on my desk works, if the jacks were on top my phone would be upside down... Having the plugs on top makes no sense to me.
The verdict is clear.
In the process of claiming HTC is stupid, he has proven that he himself is the odd one out.
d4rksorrow/kenkiller,
Never said HTC was weird or stupid. Didn't say anyone else was either. But I will say you two appear to be still wet behind the ears.
It does appear that I'm in the minority here, and that's fine. I'll stick with keeping my phone in my pocket right side up, and enjoying mp3 players and other phones with a headphone jack on the top. Takes all kinds to make the world go 'round.
A couple things to point out to everyone before they start to use their phone in the shower, in the pool, in the rain, etc.
When your phone encounters a whole lot of water, or just a little bit in the right places, the following can occur:
1) loudspeaker/earspeaker volume gets cut drastically, but will get loud once again around 30 minutes later.
2) people say they can't hear you well or sound muffled over the phone, just blow into the microphone holes.
3) headphone connection thing popping up, just blow into the headphone jack.
4) water can still breach the inside of the back cover, but will never breach the rubber seal. Always make sure to dry off excess water.
There may be more on this list, but this is all that I have encountered or know can happen. Feel free to post other things you have experienced and I can add them to the list for people to easily see. We don't want people getting their phones wet and thinking it broke just because a speaker cut its volume to protect itself.

Great post please keep it updated OP if you find out more info.
I can confirm all of that, just a tiny drop off water blocks the speaker but the volume comes right back, the headphone jack issue is a BIG ONE though, that took hours to fix, blowing in the jack and hairdryer did nothing, the big part where this is an issue is that When it thinks that you plugged in headphones it starts playing the mp3 player which killed the battery, I paused the mp3 player but a few seconds later it disconnected the headphones the reconnected them, also I don't know what would happen if you got a phone call
I never use the jack, so I wouldn't mind sticking a rubber stopper in there to keep it waterproof. That's the kind of thing I wish Samsung would have bundled with the phone.
Is this a hardware or software issue? It's annoying to have my wireless earbuds not work when the phone is inside my pocket but will work perfectly when it's inside my bag or anywhere else.
I'm planning to install a custom ROM, but I'm hesitating because (1) I really don't know how to do it properly and it might ruin my device further and (2) it might not fix my Bluetooth issues at all.
Keeping phone in pocket then cover the phone with my hand in the pocket, will disrupt my connection with earbuds and headphones too. If I don't stick my hand in, it works fine. Also check which side of your earbuds/headphones is the master, right or left. If left is master, keep your phone in left pocket.

Actually tried that — putting my phone in left or right pocket didn't help. The only thing that helped was putting it in my bag, but it's highly inconvenient.
