CWM format sd - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got my N4 today. I have a question regarding formatting the sd partition. On my previous devices (galaxy note 2, galaxy nexus) I could format the sd card in clockworkmod recovery and it would not touch my personal files (music, pictures, T Backup). However, upon experimenting with the same process, formatting the same partition on the N4 wipes away all my personal data. I am just trying to get ensure that this is the intended behavior and there is no way to circumvent this. Thanks for your responses.

CWM should have a factory reset option that doesn't touch the SDCard, I know TWRP does

Thank you for your response and yes i noticed that, but i was inquiring about the option under mount and storage, if I format sd card it formats all of my sd card and does not save my personal files like my galaxy nexus and note 2 did.

Format /data wipes all data including SDCard, factory rest wipes data aside from SD Card, so don't wipe /data >.>

Also remember the Nexus 4 has no sdcard, its all internal storage and I don't believe partitoned so personal data wouldn't be safe if you formatted it again, it wipes it all. Your other devices had actual sdcards separate from the internal storage so you can format one without affecting the other.

sd-ext???

I play a little with root explorer, and find /sd-ext/ folder in root of KF. What is that? Can I use that storage? My sd card is 5 gb, is sd-ext the rest of 3 GB? I do a full wipe, including sd card in TWRP, so did I mess something? I'mrunning CM7
No one? Please...
sdcard is usually the internal sdcard partition
sd-ext is the external (plugin) sdcard
the kf don't have a external sdcard slot
the only thing i can imagine is that something created a hardlink to the sd-ext
but it will lead to nowhere ...
about the memsize:
the kf has 8gb but there are a lot of other partitions using space
so will not get more than the 5gb with factory partitioning
allthrough there is a thread here for repartitioning i would not recommend to do so
cause the risk of bricking it is quite high if you don't know exactly what you are doing

How to format internal storage in Philz Recovery?

Hi guys,
I've got a lot of junk folders on my INTERNAL storage that have been left by old apps etc.
What is a safe way to format the internal storage?
When the internal storage is formatted, will I have to reflash recovery/ROM etc?
Cheers
Why not use the Wipe function in recovery? It securely formats your internal storage. It means all your app data will be gone, though, and you'll get a clean phone, as if you've just got it.

Go under mounts and storage in Philz, you will see option to wipe internal sd there. It's called format data as far as I know.

in recovery go to mounts and strorage and select format -data sd card- not sdcard1 (this is ext sd card)
you dont have to flash the rom again.
Into the abyss.
Also, does formatting remove all partitions that may have been made on the disk? If you are flashing roms they change what on the system, and the card(s) are left alone, correct? I'm just getting an SPH-710 the S3, but they use Philz Touch too. I came from a Transform Ultra, which was tough to manage keeping things off the Internal storage. Kinda lost on how to handle all the options on the SG3. Or, should I just leave it all alone?
??? Thanks, as always for shepherding us newbs across to the promise land.

64GB SD Card -- Unsupported File system

I got Note 3 Neo, and when I try to use my Transcend 64GB Class 10 Card, I get the following message:
"Blank SD card
SD card is blank or has unsupported filesystem"
The card work properly for sumtime and then suddenly the above message starts to appear.
I have tried formatting on Win7 PC, in the phone - But same thing.
Also, if I use 32GB class 4 card its working perfectly.
Please provide solutions folks... and is their a way to format this card in Fat32, coz in windows there is only option for Exfat & NTFS..
PS: I am on Stock 4.3 JellyBen and the 64GB card is absolutely proper as when I use it in my camera its working flawlessly.

go in recovery anf format it from there....
Don't format it using Windows, that's a really bad idea.
Use the format option under Settings > Storage > MicroSD > Format.

The only option I got in recovery is :
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache Partition
apply update from cache
There is no option to wipe the SD card (Am on stock JellyBean)
Also, I have just done complete format (not quick) and still same issue. A google search shows numerous ppl are facing same issues but with their S5.
I guess I am the first one with this problem on Note 3 Neo. The only solution is to switch to Samsung MicroSD cards - Someone should Sue Samsung for playing such a ploy.

because you're nor toot and haven't got custom recovery
Try this, put your sdcard in memory card reader and connect it to the phone using usb on the go cable, see if it can be read using usb otg. If it can be read, most probably you have sdcard port issue.

If you corrupted your SD card rooting............

Here is a YouTube video showing how to do it. Except our sd card needs to be formatted fat32.

Or you could just use SD Formatter 4 for even faster easier fixing.

After using the scan dish program several times I noticed the SD card was not recognized by teamwin recovery every time.
It could have been a fluke but I think.
The MS DOS commands in the OP are more reliable.
I'm using lenovo A7000 and recently updated marshmallow and chosen 32GB SD card as internal memory. It was worked as internal memory perfectly quite some time, all of sudden I got message that SD corrupted and doesn't show data stored in the card, it shows zero files, I lost all media files!! However USB storage option in settings SD card shows 6.5GB used out of 28GB. Since it's treated as internal memory I'm not able to read the card in other devices. I have important media files and documents in SD card and I didn't backup them. I'm bit worried!!! How to recover the data from SD card. I assume if SD card changed back to portable, it will format and lose data!!! Please support

I've heard of this problem before. Good luck
After step 9, is it possible to change it to another format type or does it need to stay on fat32?
Also, does the sdcard need to be connected directly to the pc? When I tried list disk while the sdcard was still in the phone (sdcard>phone>usb>pc), it wouldn't come up.
Had the same thing happen to both mine and my wife's SD cards in the Note 4....I think its the phone screwing things up. When it happen to me the phone rebooted and then the card was corrupt. The are like ticking time bombs..
I use the drive format tool from hiren''s boot usb. 1 click and Works like a charm.

We can just format these corrupted micro sdcards by using the Format SD card in the phone's storage settings? What do you mean by 'dont Use the note 4' though?
I wiped it on my computer, then put it back in once android was started and immediately wiped it, it's worked every time so far.

The note 4 will bootloop with the sdcard you used to root due to the fact it has your bootloader original CID stored on it as a fail safe (something messes up during the procedure ) but any device not using said CID is fine ....I used a Huawei ascend to format .worked fine and formatted card without need of pc.

Adoptable storage won't remount after a reboot

I followed the instructions to enable adoptable storage for the SD card in my S7 Edge and everything was working fine until I did a reboot. Since then I'm finding that the phone is no longer mounting the adoptable storage partition from the SD card. The normal portable storage SD card partition is mounting fine. I'm not sure why it has started and currently I don't have a /sdcard directory which is causing problems (e.g. I can't use the camera or take screenshots at the moment).
Has anyone else had this issue? If so, how did you fix it? Any suggestions what I should try would be much appreciated.
Preferably I don't want to have to format the card if possible.
Thanks,
Mark
If you format yours with two partitions it may cause problems, my suggestion is to format it with one partition adobtable or portable not both, why to format as portable if you already made some space for adobtable storage, then make it all adoptable as you won't be able to switch to another sd-card.

Having it as portable allows me to it out of my phone and easily copy stuff to and from it using my laptop. If it's all adoptable you can't do that without using something like MTP such is way slower.

I see, I don't remove mine that's why i thought you're doing the same, then try to remove and insert maybe it could mount the adoptable partition.
